The Red Dragons are readying themselves for a step up to League One, with back-to-back promotions carrying them from the National League and into the third tier of English football. Hollywood co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney have helped to make that meteoric rise possible.

More funds will be required in the next window, with Wrexham aware that they are no longer in a position to outspend EFL rivals. There is plenty of quality on their books, but movement in and out of SToK Racecourse is expected over the coming weeks.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson admits as much, telling of his hopes for the summer: “How can we go? I think League One is a bigger jump than going from National League to League Two, so we’ve got a big test in this summer, we really have. We’ve got to recruit well, we’ve got to maintain the spirit we’ve built over the last two years, but whilst always being honest – you’ve got to improve each time you go up, so that’s the challenge for us and it’s one I’m really excited about taking on.”

The Welsh outfit are about to see a number of contracts expire, with big decisions to be made there, while top targets need to be identified – with on-loan goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo said to be among those – as they look to provide even more drama for the popular ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series.

Dasgupta: Opening with Rohit could revive his Test career

Big PictureThe MCG Boxing Day Test is always an eagerly anticipated occasion, but this year it feels like there is an added edge. The series is poised at 1-1; the stump mics have been turned up; Australia are finding their voice again; Virat Kohli isn’t taking a backward step and there is grass on a Melbourne pitch. It has the makings of a Christmas cracker. If India can bounce back from their Perth defeat and register victory they will have retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy. If Australia take the honours again it will mark a significant upturn in their fortunes at the end of a year of turmoil and no little disgrace. And if it’s a draw let’s hope it’s a thriller and not like last year. The pitches in this series have provoked much discussion and Melbourne’s 22 yards has been at the forefront of everyone’s attention for days. Last year the surface was marked “poor” by the ICC after the drab Ashes stalemate and this Test, under the management of a new curator, feels like a significant moment as an iconic ground tries to repair its reputation. These two teams have shown that when there is some help on offer for the bowlers they can produce compelling cricket which makes for a wonderful spectacle. The contest between bat and ball has been excellent in Tests throughout 2018 and it would be nice to think it will end that way.The unknown qualities of the pitch – despite the evidence of this season’s Sheffield Shield matches – left both sides with thinking to do over their XIs. India won’t admit it, but fielding four quicks in Perth was a mistake – another one in a year of selection blunders – but it doesn’t have to prove terminal for their hopes in this series. They started 2018 hoping to create an overseas legacy for themselves and this match will go a long way to deciding if that happens.Form guide(last five completed matches)

Our batsmen need to step up as a unit – Kohli

In the spotlightAfter an unconvincing performance in Adelaide, Aaron Finch shaped up much better under testing conditions in Perth. However, the nasty blow he took on the finger in the second innings curtailed his knock and on return he gloved his first delivery down the leg side. He has looked comfortable in the nets leading into the third Test – which would be his first Boxing Day in the baggy green – but that dodgy digit is certainly a target for the India quick bowlers. Unless the pitch is really slow and low, and everyone hopes that isn’t the case, Finch will surely get some short deliveries early on.India’s selections away from home this year, especially in England and Australia, have been the subject of significant criticism. Ravi Shastri said all that is being ignored – on this tour because they were in a different hemisphere – but while some calls may have been 50-50 others, such as those made in Perth, were more clear errors. There are a number of issues to resolve for Melbourne and their XI will also bring much scrutiny.Team newsMitchell Marsh has been recalled at the expense of Peter Handscomb, whose technique has been worked over by the India quick bowlers, but it’s also the overs Marsh can provide which have been factored in on a surface that could yet change character.Australia 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Marcus Harris, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 Travis Head, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Tim Paine (capt. & wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodIndia have dropped both their openers – 97 runs between them in eight innings – for the Boxing Day Test. Having tried various lengths of grass in the Sheffield Shield, it appears more rather than less will be left on in an attempt to give the surface some life. Could it even be green enough to encourage a team to bowl first? The weather may play a part in how the surface develops with hot, sunny conditions forecast for at least the first four days.Stats and Trivia Mitchell Starc needs four wickets to reach 200 in Tests Nathan Lyon already holds the record for the most wickets taken by an Australian spinner in a series against India on home soil (23 in 2014) but with 16 already from two Tests this time he could go past that. Virat Kohli has scored five Test hundreds in 2018, equalling his tally from 2017 as his best year. Klopp must unleash "phenomenal" Liverpool youngster over Joe Gomez

Trent Alexander-Arnold's second-half strike against Manchester City last weekend confirmed Liverpool's credentials as genuine Premier League title challengers this season.

While the dropped points allowed Arsenal to leapfrog both sides into pole position after 13 matches, Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with the fight and fervour at the core of their efforts.

The focus now shifts to the Europa League, where a victory against LASK at Anfield tonight would secure qualification to the knockout phase.

The hosts will be expected to rotate with a league match against Fulham on Sunday preceding two away fixtures in the top-flight next week.

Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota join Spanish midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic on the sidelines after the duo sustained injuries at the Etihad Stadium.

Neither player would probably have started later, with Joel Matip likely to be another star returning to the bench despite being handed an 8/10 match rating against Manchester City – courtesy of GOAL.

The 32-year-old made five clearances, blocked four shots and made a tackle against Pep Guardiola's side as he started his second Premier League fixture in succession, and it now might be time for rotation.

"Tasmanian devil" one of 10 changes in predicted Liverpool lineup vs LASK

Liverpool can confirm their passage into the Europa League knockout stages if they beat LASK and other results go their way.

ByTom Griffin Nov 29, 2023

The Cameroonian giant is out of contract at the end of the season, having established himself as a stalwart of the Klopp era after joining on a free transfer in 2016.

Why Jarell Quansah must start vs LASK

Qualification to the knockout phase is not yet secured and defeat at Anfield could even allow Toulouse – who beat the Reds last time out – to leapfrog them into first place.

Such a scenario should not materialise but it does stress the importance of returning to winning ways on Thursday, and despite the cruciality of a positive outcome, young and exciting defender Jarell Quansah must receive a starting berth.

Liverpool revamped their midfield this summer and have since restored their rank among England's finest outfits, and while some residual hints of lethargy still linger, silverware does look to be on the horizon, though it's uncertain at this stage actually how close Klopp's side will get to titles.

But this came at the cost of defensive neglect in the summer transfer window, with Quansah rising from the academy fold to impress in the first-team.

Having now chalked up nine appearances and been lauded for his "phenomenal" performances by Alexander-Arnold, the 20-year-old is on his way to cementing his stature as one of English football's most exciting defensive talents.

The 6 foot 5 titan is commanding and quick, tough and tenacious; his aerial superiority is reminiscent of Virgil van Dijk – winning 62% of his aerial duels in the Europa League, as per Sofascore.

Joe Gomez will also hope to be in line for a role from the outset but the Englishman has been utilised as a full-back just as often as centrally and will probably be unleashed in the stead of Alexander-Arnold, moved over to the right flank.

piero-hincapie-joe-gomez-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

With Quansah and his formative defensive partner Billy Koumetio described as "man-mountains" by manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, Quansah's titanic presence has long been known, but given that it is he who has ascended to the fore suggests that Klopp views him as a star in the making.

LASK beat Union Saint-Gilloise 3-0 last time out and will be hungry to spoil the Reds' pursuit of qualification, and while Van Dijk, Matip, Gomez and co are on the books, Quansah must be unleashed to continue his journey toward stardom.

Under-pressure Mauricio Pochettino has done just enough to earn a second chance at Chelsea – whatever happens in Man City FA Cup showdown

The Argentine is preparing his side for their second cup semi-final of the season, but his future as Blues boss should already be secure

There will be a sense of deja vu for Mauricio Pochettino on Saturday afternoon; walking out under the Wembley arch for the second time in as many months, he will once again face a defining match in his Chelsea tenure as the major underdog.

But while there were calls for his head after the extra-time defeat to an under-strength Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, the Argentine tactician is unlikely to face the same level of scrutiny if his side are unable to overcome Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals after overseeing something of a turnaround.

Although progress has been gruellingly slow, as he prepares his team for a second semi-final of the season, Pochettino has arguably done enough to keep his job when the Chelsea ownership come to review his position next month.

GettyCup consolation

However challenging the Premier League campaign might have been, Pochettino has used the cup competitions to his advantage and made Chelsea challengers again.

They are back at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday having reached the Carabao Cup final two months ago – two competitions they exited in the third rounds under Graham Potter last season, albeit both of those ties came against Man City.

The Blues fell short against Liverpool in February, despite taking the high-flying Reds all the way to the dying embers of extra time, and they will once again be massive underdogs when they walk out against City in north-west London.

If – and it's a big if – they can somehow overcome Pep Guardiola's men, a more favourable final lies ahead with Championship side Coventry City and fellow transition toilers Manchester United contesting the other semi.

Regardless of the result, though, Pochettino's feat of taking what was a rudderless Chelsea side back to within touching distance of the silverware the club craves and, indeed, expects should not be understated.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesEuropean chance

Relative cup success aside, there is no doubt that Chelsea are still nowhere near where they want to be in the league, with any hope that last season's nightmare was merely a blip brutally extinguished a matter of weeks into the new campaign.

It's evident that this is going to be a gruelling transition as the club tries to claw its way back to the top, and we are witnessing Pochettino oversee those baby steps – even if he is fighting a near-impossible battle against the impatience of a demanding fanbase.

Despite producing another catalogue of disappointing results in 2023-24, Chelsea are eight points better off than at the same stage last season, and since Christmas only the top three, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool, have collected more amid an eight-game league unbeaten run.

Quite remarkably, a return to European football next season is not out of the question. The Blues have two games in hand on eighth-placed West Ham, who are one point ahead of them, and one in hand on Newcastle and Man Utd, who are just three points ahead and occupy sixth and seventh respectively.

Crucially, Chelsea have a far superior goal difference to Erik ten Hag's side, although that game in hand will be a tricky one at home to fierce rivals Tottenham and there is the small matter of Arsenal away to follow the cup semi-final.

GettyWhere there's Palmer, there's hope

The late push for European football has been spearheaded almost singlehandedly by revelatory summer signing Cole Palmer, and Pochettino deserves huge credit for overseeing his meteoric rise and giving him the freedom to succeed, despite the fact he didn't necessarily want to sign him in the first place.

"I think the sporting director and the owner of course, but the sporting director it was his idea to add him to the squad," the Argentine said when Palmer's arrival was confirmed in September. "I think he’s fit for the project. Talented player, of course."

Just six months on, as we approach the season's climax, Palmer has an outrageous 36 goal contributions in all competitions – without which Chelsea would be in serious trouble. The player himself is a staunch believer in Pochettino's project, and if there's anyone we should sit up and listen to at present, it's probably him.

"There is so much talent at Chelsea," he said recently. "The fans don’t see it, but the way the manager works us on the pitch, the things he does with us, it is only going to get better. I am sure, if not next season, then the season after. It is a project, everyone is young, you will see it sooner or later."

GettySigns of change

It is notable, too, that Palmer's individual displays have been emblematic of an overall change in style that seems to have unshackled certain members of the squad.

Although they have become agents of chaos and concede goals for fun, Chelsea's own goal-shyness is a thing of the past, and while they are still inconsistent, they generally play a cohesive, possession-based, attractive brand of football. There appears to be a newfound togetherness too, with the off-field issues of last season potentially behind them.

Players like Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson are finding their feet and emerging as important figures, while the likes of Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling have made some crucial contributions, too.

The 6-0 demolition of Everton on Monday gave a glimpse of what could be possible if this project is allowed to gather steam. Indeed, this is still a team that is far, far, far from full strength.

Phil Hay: "Brilliant" Leeds player now also out injured alongside Sam Byram

Leeds United are set to be without another injured player alongside Sam Byram for this evening’s trip to Sunderland, Phil Hay reports.

Leeds injury news

The Whites head into tonight’s trip to the Stadium of Light in fine form under Daniel Farke, unbeaten in their last seven Championship fixtures – winning six of those. They have done it with a fairly settled side as well, with Archie Gray establishing himself at right-back, Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk at centre-back and Byram at left-back.

However, Byram suffered another hamstring issue on the weekend as Leeds won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers and now looks set to miss three weeks of action as a result. Junior Firpo is also currently sidelined, leaving Farke with a decision to make at left-back against the Black Cats.

One player who could have filled in at full-back is Jamie Shackleton, labelled as “brilliant” by former Millwall boss Gary Rowett, however, another injury update has emerged which isn’t good news for Farke and Leeds.

Hay took to X on Monday to relay comments from Farke’s pre-Sunderland press conference. When it came to injuries, the German said that Byram is out for three weeks and that Shackleton has a “glute injury” and also “won't be involved”.

Djed Spence at left-back

By the looks of things, summer arrival Djed Spence, naturally a right-back could be the man to fill in at left-back. The Spurs loanee was the man who replaced Byram at Ewood Park in the second half and featured at left-back as Crysencio Summerville scored a second in front of him to secure another three points for Leeds. It is a position that is unfamiliar for the 23-year-old, though, as can be seen below throughout his career.

Another option could be moving Struijk out to left-back and bringing Liam Cooper in at centre-back, but with Rodon and Struijk seemingly settled and finding solid form, Spence could be set or a run of games in the starting line-up at left-back, making this one to watch for tonight’s meeting.

With the January transfer window just around the corner as well, Leeds may need to just get to the New Year in good shape before targeting a left-back, with Hay relaying a hint from Farke on a new left-back addition.

"Farke indicating that he's giving through to recruiting at left-back in January – and was thinking about that even before Byram/Firpo got injured. Farke says Firpo is close to returning to training."

Injury scare for Steyn, Olivier says he is "perfectly fine"

Steyn walked off in the first hour of play, clutching the same shoulder he’s had surgery on

Liam Brickhill12-Jan-2019South Africa ended the second day of the Wanderers Test with a 212-run lead, but it wasn’t without its fair share of drama. The hosts were given an injury scare when Dale Steyn left the field inside the first hour clutching his shoulder.Although Duanne Olivier, who did a little extra bowling in Steyn’s absence and was rewarded with 5 for 51, insisted that Steyn was “perfectly fine”, but the sight of him leaving the field will have caused some palpitations in the South African camp.If fully fit, Steyn is a key member of South Africa’s pace arsenal as they look to wrap up a 3-0 win. However, with Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock at the crease and three more days remaining, Olivier suggested South Africa had not yet decided as to how much bowling Steyn might do in Pakistan’s second innings.”I don’t think we’ve thought about it, too far ahead,” said Olivier. “He went off to get a bit of treatment, and he’s perfectly fine.”Steyn, 35, had left the field around 40 minutes after the start of play, having bowled five overs first up. He worked up good rhythm in those overs, topping 146kph, but appeared to show some discomfort in his right shoulder during his fifth over, and left the field immediately after completing it.His frustration was readily apparent as he punched the advertising boards in the Wanderers tunnel as he left the field, but he was back on before lunch, and even bowled two more overs. That would suggest the injury is not too serious, but that it has occurred on the same shoulder that underwent surgery in November 2016, is cause for concern. While Steyn went wicketless in Pakistan’s first innings, Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada both struck and Olivier starred with his third five-wicket haul of the series. His latest five-for took his tally for the series to 21, which is a record for South Africa against Pakistan, surpassing the previous record of 20 set by Steyn.”I’d take it any day,” Olivier said of the record. “I just try to enjoy every moment, commit every ball and just have fun. To be leading wicket-taker, I’m very happy about that. It’s awesome to bowl at the Wanderers. Any fast bowler would be happy to bowl here.”Olivier has settled into the ‘enforcer’ role laid out for him by coach Ottis Gibson and captain Faf du Plessis, once again putting his short ball to good use. It was even his go-to delivery after he had removed Babar Azam and Faheem Ashraf with consecutive deliveries to find himself on a hat-trick. The plan didn’t work, but Olivier nevertheless went on to claim his fifth wicket and helped to wrap up the innings. “I was trying to go with a bouncer, but it obviously didn’t go to plan,” he said. “It was too wide. It happens.”I don’t mind it,” Olivier said of the enforcer role. “Every bowler is different. I don’t mind bowling short, and it’s been going well so far. On a different wicket, I wouldn’t bowl like that. At the Wanderers, you don’t really need to bowl that short. There’s enough bounce in this wicket. At Cape Town, you had to go a little shorter, and at SuperSport Park it was a little up and down which made it difficult for the batsmen.”His performance helped South Africa to recover from an uncharacteristically sloppy start in the field, with ive catches, a stumping and two run-out being missed. “It is frustrating from a team point of view, but it happens, it’s cricket,” said Olivier. “We just needed to re-group and move on as quickly as possible, not dwell or think too much about it. The drinks break came, a bit of a break for us, and just tried to do the same as we’ve done before.”

Gary Neville accuses Mark Clattenburg of acting 'like a Navy SEAL' for Nottingham Forest after 'mafia gang' comment led club to consider legal action

Neville continues his scathing attack on CalltenburgWill not be commentating during Forest vs Man CitySky Sports puts him on Tottenham match dutyWHAT HAPPENED?

Forest's insinuation that VAR official Stuart Attwell, whom they referred to as a "Luton fan," had been biased while officiating their defeat to Everton prompted Neville to liken their behaviour to that of a "mafia gang". The public condemnation by Neville reportedly led Forest to consider legal action against him for his comments.

However, Neville has refused to back down and has now attacked their referee analyst Mark Clattenburg over his role at the club. He called for Clattenburg's resignation at the weekend, citing concerns over his involvement in the controversial tweet and the team's poor performance since he was appointed in his new role.

WHAT NEVILLE SAID

Speaking on thepodcast, Neville said: "You’ve got Clattenburg almost like a Navy Seal in the director’s box crawling along to the CEO [whispering]. The reason I asked him to resign was because if he actually saw that Luton tweet that went out, he actually has to distance himself from it or he’s part of it. If he’s part of that, I’m like ‘wow’. The second part of it is it’s football, right. If you’re the leader of that football club, since Mark Clattenburg came in, in the last 10 games they’ve won one match. In the 10 games before, they won four."

Neville suggested that Forest should get over their obsession with referees and focus on their performances on the pitch.

“You never give football players or employees a get-out excuse ever," he added.

"He’s given them an excuse to not win. Now that might sound crazy, but when you put that negativity in, Neco Williams, he’s probably a really good player, he’s coming out on Sunday and he’s talking about referees. They’re all consumed about referees, and they’ve given themselves an excuse, everyone’s against us. It’s not working for them this strategy of the way in which it’s going. What they need to do is switch their mentality completely and forget about referees. Get Clattenburg out the director’s box so the camera stops going on him and concentrate on football, because they’re going to go down if they’re not careful.”

Neville will not be working as a pundit during Forest's clash against Manchester City on Sunday and has instead been allocated to the north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham. Neville revealed that he had been sent a text by a Forest fan that read: "I’m just asking whether you’re at the Nottingham Forest and Man City game. I’m asking for 27,000 friends.”

The former defender then went on to confirm: "I rang Sky up and said I need the North London derby on Sunday! No. I am at the North London derby, by the way.”

The Los Blancos captain will look to finish the campaign with Real Madrid up before deciding his future. He's set to life the La Liga trophy with his club as they're 11 points clear of second place Barcelona in La Liga, and Madrid is still alive in the UCL, as well.

Crystal Palace leading race for Osayi-Samuel ahead of Premier League rivals

Sitting six points clear of the relegation zone as we approach the halfway mark in the Premier League, Crystal Palace's status in the top flight is on course to remain intact for another season. As the campaign progresses, however, those at Selhurst Park will be hoping to see their side not only stay up but add some excitement to things under Roy Hodgson. And the January transfer window could help do exactly that.

Reports suggest that the Eagles are leading the way ahead of Premier League rivals to land one particular talent, who could help Hodgson's side take a crucial step towards the Premier League's top half.

Crystal Palace transfer news

Speaking on the potential of January arrivals, Hodgson told the official Crystal Palace website:

“In the situation, we find ourselves in, in the wrong end of the table – we’re not in the top half, we are that in that bottom half of the table – I don’t think there’d be many teams who are not looking at the January transfer window and saying it would be good if we could bring in a couple of players who will strengthen us, either as a player to go directly in the team or as a player to help us in the squad.

“We’re in that group, but it is easier said than done. I think when you are assessing it, one does have to always bear in mind what bringing in a senior player in a certain position will do to one or two of the younger ones that you are actually now quite keen to see given a chance and weigh up how much these people are going to play a part and help you.”

That said, according to TeamTalk, Crystal Palace are leading the race to Fenerbahce right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel ahead of both Championship side Leeds United and Premier League relegation rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers. The full-back, who has impressed Selhurst Park chiefs, left Queens Park Rangers in 2021 and has improved more and more ever since to attract the interest of those in the Premier League. Palace chiefs reportedly hope to get him for a cut-price next year, given that his current contract expires in 2025.

"Outstanding" Osayi-Samuel could be ready for England return

After picking up experience on the European stage and in Turkey's top flight at Fenerbahce, Osayi-Samuel could be more than ready to step into a Premier League side. Osayi-Samuel's stats this season, compared to Nathaniel Clyne's, for example, show the upgrade that Palace could be getting.

Before Fenerbahce, however, the right-back earned plenty of praise at QPR, including from former manager Mark Warburton, who said:

"Bright came off because we've got to look after the young players. I've never been booed at 6-0 before I've got to say. These demands, you can't be playing 21st, 26th, 29th, 1st, 4th or 5th whatever it might be without injury and fatigue. If you lose those boys for four to six-week injuries, you can't afford to do that. Today he was outstanding and deserved the applause."

When the January transfer window opens, Palace could make their move and add a much-needed improvement to a side aiming to move away from the threat of relegation even further, making this one to keep an eye on.

Sam Billings rescues England, Chris Jordan destroys West Indies for 2-0 win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentarySam Billings rescued England before Chris Jordan’s four-wicket haul demolished West Indies for a paltry 45, handing the tourists a 137-run victory in the second T20I and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.Man of the Match Billings’ career-best knock of 87 off 47 balls and a return to T20I form for Joe Root, who made 55 off 40, resurrected England’s innings from a dire 32 for 4 after 5.2 overs. Then Jordan’s remarkable 4 for 6 off two overs meant West Indies were never in the contest and they fell for the second-lowest T20I total, behind Netherlands’ 39 against Sri Lanka at the World T20 in 2014. It was the lowest total by a Full-Member nation, worse than the 60 posted by New Zealand against Sri Lanka at the same tournament and West Indies’ 60 against Pakistan in Karachi last year. With the top order tumbling around him, Root produced a composed innings, sharing an 82-run partnership with Billings to reach his half-century. It was the first time Root had reached double figures in four T20I innings and his tenth knock since he last reached fifty, in the 2016 World T20 final won by West Indies in Kolkata. When Root was run-out, scrambling to the danger end for a second with the fleet-footed Billings as Fabian Allen threw the ball in to wicketkeeper Shai Hope, the rescue mission fell to Billings and he chose to accept it willingly. Billings racked up 17 runs in one Sheldon Cottrell over, including a six to bring up his 50.Carlos Brathwaite had been economical through his first three overs, claiming 1 for 11, but he conceded 22 off his last over, including three fours to Billings and a six to David Willey. The pair put on a 68-run stand for the sixth wicket, before Billings was dismissed on the last ball of the innings, but not before he had scored 22 off the over, bowled by debutant quick Obed McCoy. Billings was dropped by Shimron Hetmyer on the third ball of the over and then picked up six thanks to a fumble by Brathwaite, who was trying to palm the ball back into play. Billings punished the next one for four before attempting another big hit and edging to the keeper.By then, he had led England to a respectable total, especially given their early position. West Indies had won the toss and sent England in on a pitch that was expected to improve as the match went on. Unfortunately for them, they were not in long enough for that to play out.Willey, who had questioned the noise around Jofra Archer’s World Cup prospects in the lead-up to the match, continued to press his own claims for a berth when he snared the wicket of Chris Gayle for just 5, caught simply by Root at mid-on. Willey had West Indies’ other opener, Hope, out cheaply too with Eoin Morgan holding the catch despite colliding heavily with Tom Curran as he took the ball. Then Jordan went on the rampage. He claimed the wickets of Darren Bravo, one of only two West Indies batsmen to reach double-figures, and Jason Holder with consecutive balls, and then dismissed Nicholas Pooran and Allen in his second over. The damage done, Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett cleaned up the West Indies tail, with England’s largest T20I victory secured inside 12 overs.
