Maxwell and Cummins the difference as Australia take series

Aaron Finch fell just sort of a hat-trick of hundreds before a limp batting display from Pakistan left them facing the prospect of a whitewash

The Report by Danyal Rasool27-Mar-2019Shoaib Malik said on Sunday, and again at the toss here today, that Pakistan were using this series to test their bench strength. Well, it appears they haven’t got much.It was a grey day in Abu Dhabi, sparsely attended by the locals who’d had their fill with the recently concluded PSL. And that was just as well, because the cricket that transpired won’t have brought much joy. It was another commanding performance from Australia, who, having won just four ODIs in two years, have suddenly come up trumps in six on the bounce. They sealed their second consecutive series win in a fortnight with an 80-run win and will fancy a 5-0 scoreline.Aaron Finch’s 90 – he fell 10 short of becoming the first Australian to score three ODI hundreds on the trot – and a 55-ball 71 from Glenn Maxwell, who was given a life on 27, took Australia to 266. Pakistan, who lost their first three wickets for 19 runs, were never really in the game from that point onwards; partnerships between Imam-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik, and then Umar Akmal and Imad Wasim, merely delaying the inevitable. With five overs to spare, they had folded for 186 in what the most uncompetitive series defeat for Mickey Arthur’s men since New Zealand whitewashed them fourteen months ago.The recalled pair of Pat Cummins and Jason Behrendorff found early swing that kept Imam and Shan Masood on their toes. Masood has had a frustrating series so far, struggling to replicate the form that saw him impress so highly in the Test series in South Africa. He was the first to fall, edging Cummins to second slip, where Peter Handscomb completed a superb catch. Haris Sohail, who came in at No. 3 was deceived by the bounce, edging to first slip to leave Pakistan tottering as rain interrupted play for the second time in the day. While the rain stopped soon after, the rot didn’t. Mohammad Rizwan was undone by a pearler from a brilliant Cummins who maintained the probing off stump line, shaving the outside edge on the way to the keeper. It brought Imam and Shoaib Malik together for a consolidation that never looked like it could move to the next level. The spin bowlers had come in and showed no signs of letting up on the intensity or quality of their quick counterparts. It didn’t even take one of the specialists to break the partnership. Maxwell drifted one in to Imam, who played outside the line and found himself trapped in front of middle and leg.ESPNcricinfo LtdWith Pakistan fielding a long tail in the absence of Faheem Ashraf, Umar and Imad came together with the hosts still needing 171 for victory. They tried to take the attack to Australia, bringing up a boundary just about every over while attempting to play through the line on a slowing surface, but with an ever-increasing run rate and a vast number of runs still to get, it was a hopeless cause. Some risk had to be taken, and when a visibly tiring Umar slogged Behrendorff right down deep square-leg’s throat with 118 still to get, that was the end. Adam Zampa was good enough to rip through the lower order, the final four wickets falling in just 16 balls. For a while in the first innings, Australia did have it all their own way. Off just the sixth ball of the innings, Usman Shinwari knocked back the off stump of his namesake. Usman Khawaja needed just two runs to surpass Virat Kohli as the highest ODI runscorer this year but a fast, inswinging yorker meant he will have to wait till Dubai to achieve that landmark. Shinwari was Pakistan’s most impressive bowler overall, going at just two per over in his first spell, and the only bowler who looked in control of proceedings towards the end when Maxwell had teed off. Not long after, the other new inductee into Pakistan’s bowling line-up, Junaid Khan, needed just three balls to make his mark when Shaun Marsh got a think inside edge to square leg. That put Australia into rebuilding mode straightaway. Finch was content to nudge and nurdle his way for most of the innings, departing from that policy only when Yasir Shah pitched the ball up to deposit him into the stands behind the sightscreen. Peter Handscomb was brighter in his approach, beginning by punishing a wayward Mohammad Hasnain with four boundaries in an over. It was another tough day for the 18-year old; he had conceded 16 in that over, and it wouldn’t be his most expensive of the innings. Overall, Malik only saw fit to trust him with half his allotted quota, in which he conceded 50 runs, and still awaits his first international wicket.Progress was slow and when Marcus Stoinis was castled by Imad, Pakistan would have sniffed a chance to get the lower order in. But Finch and Maxwell held firm, even if it came at the expense of the run rate, and a revision of the total they would aim for. Yasir looked more comfortable, and finished off his spell by snaring Finch in his final over.It wasn’t until the end of the 44th over that Australia crossed 200, but a costly drop by Imam at point that gave Maxwell a reprieve on 27 meant the next four overs would be chaotic for Pakistan. As their fielding standards dipped and Maxwell finally hit his straps, Pakistan conceded 47 off the following 24 balls. It was a crucial passage of play that allowed Australia to seize the momentum – they would never let it go after that.

Milan met with Sesko's agentsRelease clause set to increase furtherEuro 2024 opportunity beckonsWHAT HAPPENED?

The Rossoneri are said to be offering a bid of €50 million (£43m/$54m) – his previous release clause – and may now have the edge over the Gunners after meeting with the Slovenia international's agents. According to , the meeting went very well and Sesko's team could be in the stands for Milan's Serie A game against Cagliari at San Siro on Saturday.

But while relations between the two parties are reportedly good, Milan will likely have to up their bid as Sesko's performances have seen his release clause increase to €65m (£56m/$70m) – and it could go as high as €73m (£63m/$79m) before the window opens. Milan may have to cough up even more if Arsenal hang on in race as the Italian club look to find a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who will join Los Angeles FC as a free agent on July 1.

WHAT'S BEEN SAID ABOUT SESKO?

Despite the fact the fees being quoted are fairly large, Slovenia manager Matjaz Kek believes Sesko would be a bargain for any top European club. When asked whether the striker would be a good fit at Milan, he told : “It’s not a question for me. Let me explain: I am happy with how he is growing at Leipzig and in general, his evolution as a footballer. This is why he is becoming increasingly important to Slovenia as well. The point is whether he will change club. All I can say is that whoever signs him will make a bargain. Sesko does not disappoint.”

Sesko, still just 20, has scored 11 goals in 27 appearances for Slovenia and has been in fine form for Leipzig this term. The ex-Red Bull Salzburg poacher boasts 13 goals from 30 Bundesliga appearances – including six in his last six – and also netted twice in the Champions League before the German outfit were eliminated by Real Madrid in the last 16.

Arteta can repeat Arsenal’s Rice masterclass with £90m January deal

Arsenal begin their hunt for a record-extending 15th FA Cup victory as they prepare to face Liverpool this evening.

Mikel Arteta won't be resting on his laurels as he aims to secure his second trophy as manager of the club – four years after winning the same competition against Chelsea.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Over the previous few weeks, however, the Gunners have suffered two defeats in the Premier League, and they have only won one fixture since a 4-3 victory over Luton Town at the start of December.

This signifies that despite the club sitting fourth in the table and just five points behind the Anfield side, Arteta needs to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.

small

They have naturally been linked with a few names so far, yet it is a potential swoop for a current Premier League midfielder which could be one of his most important moves.

Arsenal transfer news – Amadou Onana

It is no secret that Arteta is after some midfield reinforcements – either this month or in the summer – and according to a report from TEAMtalk earlier this week, Arsenal have shown interest in Everton gem Amadou Onana ahead of making a swoop for the player.

Indeed, the report indicates that the Gunners have in fact made an approach for the Belgian as they look to add some more talent into their midfield area.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

The club have been linked with a move for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz in recent months following his impressive start to the season for the Midlands outfit, scoring seven times as Unai Emery’s side have lit up the top flight.

It appears as though Arteta is looking to move on to other targets, with Onana now being targeted.

Any prospective move could come at a huge cost, however, as the Goodison Park outfit are reportedly valuing the midfielder between £70m-£90m and this could prove to be a big stumbling block for Arsenal.

2023

2023

2023

2022

2021

During the summer, the Spaniard splashed out a club record £105m transfer fee to lure Declan Rice from West Ham United and despite the lavish sum, he is certainly shown his worth.

This suggests that a move for Onana could perhaps allow Arteta to replicate his Rice masterclass and sign another midfielder from a fellow Premier League side and give them a platform to continue their development.

Declan Rice’s Arsenal statistics

The Englishman swiftly emerged as one of the most gifted midfielders in the country during his spell at West Ham, progressing from the academy to club captain within just a few years.

He eventually made 245 appearances for the Irons since making his debut during the 2016/17 campaign, and he departed as a hero, leading the club to their first major trophy since the 1980 FA Cup by winning the Europa Conference League in June 2023.

He had been admired by a host of clubs, yet it was a move across London to Arsenal which was the logical option, and he hasn’t disappointed during his first six months at the Emirates.

Indeed, the midfielder currently ranks second among the squad for accurate passes per game in the top flight (62.8) along with ranking second for tackles (2.1) and first for interceptions (1.5), indicating that he has been a positive influence in the Arsenal side, especially from a defensive viewpoint.

The 24-year-old can also contribute in an attacking sense too, as he has scored some vital goals this season.

His first goal for the Gunners came against Manchester United in a thrilling 3-1 victory in September, while the former West Ham starlet netted a wonderful last-minute header against Luton to claim all three points, and he has adapted well to Arteta’s methods and demands.

Onana is in a similar mould to the Arsenal midfielder and there is no doubt he could settle in well at the club should he make a move to the Gunners in the near future.

Amadou Onana’s season in numbers

Frank Lampard may have struggled in his role as Everton manager, but his signing of Onana was among one of his finest pieces of transfer business.

The 22-year-old cost the club £33m from French side Lille in August 2022 and he enjoyed a decent first season for the Toffees, making 35 appearances across all competitions and scoring once.

This has given him a platform to become one of Everton’s best performers this season under Sean Dyche.

His displays this term have seen him garner praise from a wide range of sources. Under 23 scout Antonio Mango was one such admirer, saying: “He’s such a physical specimen, he has all attributes to become a real Midfield Powerhouse.”

Talent scout Jacek Kulig went even further in his praise for the talented Belgian, claiming he was a “complete package” following another excellent performance for the Toffees last month.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Across the whole Everton squad in the top flight this season, Onana ranks first for accurate passes per game (32.7) while also ranking third for big chances created (four) and third for tackles per game (2.6) which demonstrates how effective he is in various performance metrics.

He is without doubt, one of Dyche’s most important players this season, and he could thrive at the heart of the Arsenal midfield, enabling the likes of Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz to utilise their attacking abilities.

The Belgian’s defensive acumen sees him rank in the top 5% in Europe’s big five leagues for aerial duels won per 90 (2.47) along with ranking in the top 25% for tackles won per 90 (2.47) and if there is one player Arteta should target this month, it must be Onana.

Amadou Onana

Much will depend on how much the Spaniard has to spend in the current transfer window, and he may have to move on some deadwood in order to raise the required funds to sign the Everton gem.

Rice has proved that £105m can go a long way and with the Toffees wanting around £90m for their star man, Arteta could repeat his stroke of genius by luring Onana to the Emirates in the summer.

Tottenham want to sign £50m midfielder alongside Conor Gallagher

Tottenham have been told the "mega money" price tag needed to sign a midfielder they really want, alongside the heavily linked Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

Postecoglou chasing new midfielder after Dragusin

After securing the arrivals of Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, and defender Radu Dragusin from Genoa in a part-exchange deal worth around £26 million (Fabrizio Romano), attention turns to the possible addition of a new midfielder.

Tottenham immediately pushing for next signing after Dragusin and Werner

The Lilywhites are wasting not time.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 11, 2024

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou reportedly wants a new number eight in the engine room, and one who can alternate with playmaker James Maddison when required.

Reports in the last few weeks have suggested this could come down to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's future, and whether the Dane can seal a move away from north London before January 31.

However, The Independent and journalist Miguel Delaney shared an update on this after Spurs sealed a deal for Dragusin – indicating that may not be the case as Tottenham "press ahead" with plans to sign another midfielder.

The most heavily linked option by far has been Gallagher of Chelsea. The Englishman has been excellent under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge this season, starting 19 league games as a key player.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Gallagher is currently level with Cole Palmer for top-flight assists at Chelsea, and his stellar form has apparently turned Postecoglou's head in his search for a new midfield running man at Spurs.

However, that isn't to say he's their only option, as it is also believed the Lilywhites hold a keen interest in signing Royal Antwerp sensation Arthur Vermeeren. The Belgian has enjoyed somewhat of a breakthrough campaign in the Jupiler Pro League this season, and has even drawn comparisons with legendary Barcelona stars like Andreas Iniesta.

Vermeeren has started 20 league matches and featured in all of Antwerp's Champions League games earlier this term. The 18-year-old has been described by Spurs scouts as the "next Christian Eriksen", according to Tottenham News, who have another line on the club's interest in Vermeeren this week.

Tottenham want "mega money" Vermeeren

According to the outlet, Vermeeren is of real interest to Tottenham, but the club will have to pay what sources describe as a "mega money" fee to prise him away from Belgium. Indeed, the package required would be £25 million initial payment and an extra £25 million in performance-related add-ons.

This is how highly rated Vermeeren is at Antwerp, but it remains to be seen if Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and the club's recruitment team think he's worth that marquee figure.

Spurs transfer target Arthur Vermeeren in Champions League action for Antwerp.

What's abundantly clear, though, is that the teenager is a player of sky-high potential and one to watch over the coming weeks.

"Do I sometimes watch with my mouth open? Certainly," said former Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld on Vermeeren.

"Everyone knows perfectly what to do when in possession of the ball and when losing the ball. Then the qualities of such a boy come to the fore. What he shows at his age is fantastic. I have rarely seen that."

Instability of PCB hampering efforts to attract former players

The PCB’s history of unpredictability and internal strife has made it difficult for the new setup to attract recently retired players to work in the organisation

Umar Farooq17-May-2019A plan to involve modern cricketers in the working structure of the Pakistan Cricket Board seems to be have hit a snag. ESPNcricinfo understands one of the major reasons former players are reluctant to join the PCB is the organisation’s inherent instability and the PCB’s internal working culture.Over the last two decades, the PCB has effectively been run as a one-man show, with the chairman enjoying executive power and calling all the shots. The structure and hierarchy within the PCB has been inconsistent, with general elections and changes of power in Pakistan’s political setup meaning radical overhaul for the cricket board. Historically, the ruling party in Islamabad has nominated (effectively, appointed) a person at the helm, and all the power lies with that chairman, given the PCB’s culture of allowing the executive almost absolute power. The most recent episode that highlighted the uncertainty was the mutiny against newly appointed Managing Director Wasim Khan last month, which for a time cast serious doubts on the PCB functioning properly. The major bone of contention is the domestic cricketing structure, which has been revamped frequently for the past decade, but is resistant to the sort of change the current Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to see.A new set-up in the PCB began with an intent to rope in Younis Khan as the country’s Under-19 coach, but that fell through after the former captain and the PCB failed to reach an agreement. The PCB moved on and turned to other former players, but failed to attract them for various reasons. One former fast bowler turned down the offer over the scope of the role, while another ex-batsman batsman wasn’t comfortable with the internal working culture in PCB.”We want to bring a change by inducting players from the present era to work into the system,” Wasim Khan told ESPNcricinfo. “Naturally, you want a new generation to take over and in the modern game we need people who are relevant, hungry and are committed to making a difference. It’s a new era with a new Chairman and me as MD, and we have exciting plans for future and we won’t be derailed in doing what’s right for Pakistan cricket.”We have created an ambitious strategy for the next five years. My philosophy is that the past should be a point of reference and not a point of residence. What has gone on before needs to remain there, we are now about taking the right people with us who want to buy into a new future. The status quo isn’t acceptable. We have a lot of work to do, make no mistake, our systems and importantly the culture has to foster high values.”We want to base the system on meritocracy and not on entitlement. If people can bring a real value in taking us forward then they will have a role to play in Pakistan cricket.”Wasim Khan, who has been appointed PCB managing director•Getty ImagesOne of the significant problems in the system is the trust deficit between local players and the PCB management. It is one of the key reasons why the PCB has never able to pull players from the 90s to work within the PCB for any length of time; Waqar Younis was the exception, serving as head coach twice, but both times his departure proved ignominious. Former players from the 70 to 80s continue to occupy prominent positions within the setup, having comfortably surpassed regular retirement age. Haroon Rasheed (66), Shafiq Ahmed (70), Ali Zia (62), Mudassar Nazar (63), and Agha Zahid (66) all hold senior positions at the PCB, and had their contracts extended after the PCB failed to find any suitable replacement.Pakistan’s national coaching staff is foreign, with the exception of bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, as the PCB has failed to develop home grown coaches, forcing them to rely on foreigners. “We want to quash the perception about the over-reliance on foreigners and we want to bring in our own people on top,” Wasim added . “But they have to work their way upward, and take over various segments in the PCB. After all, these recently retired players are assets for the country, and they have a future with Pakistan cricket even if they have retried from playing cricket.”It’s not just about selling the role but it’s also a matter of availability. Younis is a good man and so there is a disappointment that it didn’t work out. But it happens and we all need to move on. But we will continue with our mission; in this regard the role has been discussed with another individual but existing commitments have ruled him out.In contrast to the previous set up, the present one revolves more around the Managing Director, a post created by Ehsan Mani to bring a competent figure to lead the cricket board. Unlike previous chairmen, Mani intends to dilute his executive powers in the system, and bring the PCB in line with modern corporate structure. Mani distributed his power to the MD to implement policies, while he holds the reviewing power to avoid conflict of interest.

Can Mumbai Indians take down Chennai Super Kings' Chepauk fortress?

Super Kings haven’t lost a home game this season, but they have lost five of their last seven meetings with their biggest rivals

The Preview by Sruthi Ravindranath25-Apr-2019Big pictureThis is arguably the biggest rivalry in the history of the tournament – the IPL’s . Mumbai Indians ended Chennai Super Kings’ three-match winning streak earlier this month. And while Super Kings are yet to lose a home game this season, the last team to beat them at Chepauk were Mumbai, in IPL 2015, breaking a two-year streak. Super Kings have a 44% win record against Mumbai, while it’s 60% or above against every other team. Since 2015, Mumbai have won five of the seven meetings between the two teams. All this sets up a mouth-watering contest, as Mumbai face table-toppers Super Kings at a crucial stage in the tournament.Form guide

Chennai Super Kings: Beat Sunrisers by six wickets, lost to RCB by one run, lost to Sunrisers by six wickets
Mumbai Indians: Lost to Royals by five wickets, beat Capitals by 40 runs, beat RCB by five wickets

While Super Kings have all but sealed their spot in the playoffs, Mumbai are looking to cement their position with the race heating up. They’re coming into the game following a five-day break after their loss to Rajasthan Royals. A win here will lift them to second, while a loss might land them in trouble, leaving their playoff hopes dependent on other closely-competing teams’ results.Super Kings went into their last game, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, facing questions over whether their batting was too dependent on MS Dhoni. They answered some of them, with Shane Watson and Suresh Raina stepping up to lead the chase of 175, and Dhoni didn’t even come out to bat. There are, however, concerns surrounding Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav, who have been in middling form this season.

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, has struggled to convert starts, but his form does not seem to be that big a concern yet for Mumbai, who have enviable batting depth. After producing slow turners in the first half of the tournament, a batting-friendly track was laid out at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, which is good news for the visiting team. Hardik Pandya’s late assault ended Super Kings’ last major unbeaten home streak in 2015. He’s coming into this match with four consecutive 30-plus scores, including two fifties. But this year, he has managed only 114 off 99 balls against spin while being dismissed four times in eight innings. In the IPL since 2015, de Kock has lost his wicket 13 times in 25 innings to spinners. Super Kings could introduce spin early to counter the de Kock threat. Harbhajan Singh, who has had plenty of Powerplay success against left-handers, will be the obvious choice for this match-up. Suryakumar Yadav might be one of Mumbai’s biggest assets, but this season he hasn’t really taken off, particularly struggling in the middle overs against spin. In nine innings, he’s lost his wicket three times to spinners and has scored just 107 off the 91 balls he’s faced from them. A possible fix for this could be Mumbai sending in Ishan Kishan or Kieron Pollard earlier. Kishan has been aggressive against spinners, striking at 163.1 since 2018 in the IPL, while Pollard’s best scores (83 v Kings XI and 46 not out v Sunrisers) this season have come when he’s walked out within the first 12 overs of the innings. Stats that matter Hardik has an average of 42 in the death overs and has been striking at 207.9 in this phase in nine innings. Raina needs one more fifty to bring up 50 fifties in T20s and one more catch to get to 100 catches in the IPL. Dhoni is one big hit away from 200 sixes for Chennai Super Kings.

Time's up for Erik ten Hag at Man Utd – even a miraculous FA Cup final win shouldn't change that

The Dutchman could yet end this harrowing season on a high, but an unlikely win over Manchester City will not mask the team's dire state

The FA Cup's history is steeped in shock results, but the last real upset in a final came in 2013 when Manchester City were stunned by soon-to-be-relegated Wigan Athletic. If City are beaten by Machester United in Saturday's showpiece at Wembley, it will be the greatest final shock to take place since then.

Both sides have just recorded historic seasons, but for very different reasons. City became the first team in 135 years of English football to win four consecutive league titles. United, meanwhile, have just posted their lowest finish in the Premier League while also ending with a negative goal difference.

The Red Devils also lost 14 matches, another unwanted club record in the Premier League era. In all competitions, they have lost 19. By way of contrast, City lost just four, excluding penalty shootouts. They last tasted defeat more than five months ago on December 6. And with Rodri in their side, as he will be at Wembley, they have not been beaten since February 2023.

The difference between the two teams, which Erik ten Hag had the cheek to describe as "small margins" after the last Manchester derby, is colossal. City finished with 31 more points than United while scoring an extra 39 goals and conceding 24 goals fewer.

GettyVictory unlikely but not impossible

While United are ravaged by injuries, sweating on the fitness of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw before Saturday, City have a clean bill of health aside from the injured Ederson, who would have played back-up to Stefan Ortega regardless.

Many United fans will be dreading a bloodbath at Wembley, a repeat of the 6-1 hammering City dished out to them in 2011 at Old Trafford or the 6-3 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium early last season. But finals are often tight and nerves always set in. A United win, while unlikely, is not entirely out of the question.

Ten Hag's side were unbeaten in all three of their games with Liverpool this season, toppling them in the unforgettable FA Cup quarter-final. They could frustrate City, Erling Haaland could miss a few sitters, and United have match-winners in Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford who could snatch victory.

But even if United can pull off the seemingly impossible and lift the FA Cup at City's expense, it should not be Ten Hag's golden ticket to another season in the dugout.

AdvertisementGetty Too many false dawns

While a hypothetical victory over City would be one of Ten Hag's greatest feats as United manager, it would be the exception that proves the rule. Anyone who thinks it could be a turning point for him, a platform from which his side could achieve great things, has not been paying much attention this season.

United fans have heard the words 'turning point' quite a few times this season after the occasional big win. But more often than not, those few enjoyable moments have been mere false dawns. Ten Hag first used the dreaded phrase after Scott McTominay's late show against Brentford. “It has to be a turning point and also a restart. These games give fuel to the dressing room," he said.

United did indeed win their next two matches against the 'giants' of Sheffield United and Copenhagen, both by small margins. But then they were embarrassed by City, losing 3-0 at Old Trafford, before being destroyed by a hugely inexperienced Newcastle team in the Carabao Cup.

GettyNo turning point after all

The manager talked in the same terms after the cup win over Liverpool. He said: "This could be the moment that gives the team energy and the belief that they can do amazing things. When you can beat Liverpool like this you can beat any opponent."

Yet in their next five games after stunning Jurgen Klopp's side, United failed to win once, shipping 12 goals in the process. Their next win, the hard-fought victory at home to basement club Sheffield United, was also no turning point, preceding the draw against Burnley, humiliation at Crystal Palace and defeat at home to Arsenal.

The same is true of the other big wins United have enjoyed. The 3-0 success at Everton, their joint-biggest victory of the campaign, was followed by the mad 3-3 draw at Galatasaray and then a grim 1-0 defeat at Newcastle. The 2-1 victory over Chelsea in December was followed by the shock 3-0 thrashing at home to Bournemouth. And the thrilling comeback from two goals down against Aston Villa on Boxing Day was followed by defeat at Nottingham Forest.

It is naive to expect that anything different would happen in the unlikely event the FA Cup is draped in red white and black ribbons on Saturday.

GettyExcuses, not solutions

The only spell of the season in which United showed any real consistency came between January and February, when the team strung together four Premier League wins, five in all competitions. Their second-longest winning streak was three games.

Ten Hag has often hid behind United's injury record and, in fairness to him, that five-game streak came when he had the majority of his best players available. But once Rasmus Hojlund got injured in late February and Fernandes had to play up front against Fulham, everything fell apart again.

Injuries are a reality of modern football and it is unrealistic to expect your best players to always be available. The top coaches find solutions amid player shortages. Too often, however, Ten Hag has reached for excuses. The manager has not taken any responsibility for the litany of injury setbacks his team have suffered either.

Ten Hag has also cursed the team's luck on the pitch, repeatedly bringing up the defeat at Arsenal in September as a sliding doors moment, pointing to a penalty that never was given to Hojlund and Garnacho's marginally-offside disallowed goal.

January has come at an ideal time for Aston Villa as they look to maintain their strong domestic form, and Emery and company will be aware that the right changes this month could go a long way to deciding their eventual fate this term.

Rumours will of course be doing the rounds as to who could potentially give the Villans some additional squad depth, and one man who continues to be mentioned in connection with the club is Hellas Verona wideman Cyril Ngonge.

Tuttomercatoweb claim that the Villans are keen on the 23-year-old; nevertheless, Napoli, Fiorentina, AC Milan and Nottingham Forest will try to beat them to his signature. Hellas Verona are looking to hold out for between €12-13 million for the attacker in part of an effort to raise €25 million this window.

Previous reports also intimated that Aston Villa are keen on Girona forward Artem Dovbyk, with a fee of around £39 million quoted as a figure that could tempt the La Liga high-flyers into parting ways with the Ukraine international.

More or less every top club in Europe has registered an interest in Copenhagen sensation Roony Bardghji and the Villans have joined his illustrious list of suitors. His current employers will look to recoup a figure in the region of £20 million for the Sweden international.

Crook told the outlet: "Yeah, but it's been fairly quiet so far. They were big in the summer and they're probably in a better position than they could have hoped. The owners have got deep pockets and they're ambitious.

Bayer LeverkusenJeremie Frimpong.

"So yeah, I think towards the end of the window that might well ramp up. Jeremie Frimpong is the one that I think is the most genuine from what I'm told. Leverkusen aren't particularly keen to sell him in this window. But if that was to change, I think that they would certainly be part of the conversation."

Labelled "brilliant" by former boss Neil Lennon, the 22-year-old has been in fantastic form this campaign, registering seven goals and ten assists in 22 appearances across all competitions (Frimpong statistics – Transfermarkt).

Frimpong is one of the most talented full-backs in Europe and would be a massive coup for Aston Villa as Emery looks to keep the good times rolling in the West Midlands.

Australia net bowler in hospital after hit to the head

The medium-pacer, Jai Kishan, was bowling to David Warner and was struck by a shot that came back at him before he could react

Melinda Farrell at The Oval08-Jun-2019A net bowler working with the Australian team at The Oval has been given the all-clear after a precautionary scan, after he was struck on the head during training. The medium-pacer, Jai Kishan, was bowling to David Warner and was hit by a shot that came back at him before he could react.Kishan was treated immediately on the field by the medical staff present at the ground before being strapped onto a medivac and transferred to hospital. He was reportedly conscious and smiling before he left.A CT scan showed no damage, though he is still being monitored for delayed concussion and other after-effects. He has since spoken to the Australian doctor and said he is feeling much betterThe Australian players, clearly shaken by the incident, suspended their training for around 20 minutes and gathered at the side of the nets. Aaron Finch, speaking to the media just after the incident, said Warner had been particularly affected.David Warner in a sombre mood as Mitchell Starc looks on during Australia’s training session•Getty Images”Dave was obviously pretty shaken up,” Finch said. “The young guy seems to be in pretty good spirits at the moment. He’s obviously been taken off to hospital and will continue to be assessed just to make sure that everything is okay. But yeah, Dave was pretty shaken up, no doubt. It was a decent hit to the head. Hopefully everything keeps going well for the youngster and he’s back up and running shortly. It was tough to watch.”While it is not a common occurrence for net bowlers to be hit during training, there have been a number of incidents that have raised concerns in the past. England Test bowler James Anderson has previously suggested that net bowlers could wear protective equipment, such as helmets.”Yeah, that could be a decent idea, Finch said. “Again, it’s a bit like everything; it’s such a personal preference for net bowlers, and we’re very lucky to have so many of them come in and want to bowl to us and help us prepare as best we can for the game. But I think it’s going to be a personal preference. It’s lucky that there were so many good medical team on standby.”It’s quite rare that somebody gets hit, and it’s obviously very unfortunate. The medical staff that were on hand, obviously our own medical staff, doctor and physio and also the medical staff, paramedics at the ground, did a great job in being there very quickly to assess and make sure that all the right protocols and right processes were put in place.”Yeah, maybe [bowlers could wear helmets] – it is a difficult one because you get some guys that are coming in and who probably aren’t as well-equipped with their game to be able to deal with that.”
