Michael Neser launches season with five but Beau Webster lifts Tasmania

Tasmania’s lower order hauled them to a respectable total after they suffered an afternoon collapse

Andrew McGlashan10-Oct-2020Michael Neser enjoyed a fine opening day to the season as he claimed 5 for 32 to help dismiss Tasmania for 250. However, that was more than what Tasmania looked likely to get at tea with Beau Webster anchoring a lower-order rally to complement Ben McDermott’s earlier half-century.Tasmania’s last three wickets added 101, the innings ending when Webster was brilliantly caught on the deep midwicket rope by Marnus Labuschagne. He sprinted to take the catch and then flicked it back to Mitchell Swepson as he slid near the rope. The umpires conferred, without the benefit of replays, before giving it out as Xavier Bartlett picked up his fourth wicket of the innings.Neser, who has been a regular member of Australia Test squads without yet making a debut, removed Queensland’s first three wickets during the morning session – including his first two scalps in the space of four balls as Jordan Silk was lbw and Charlie Wakim spooned a catch to point – before completing his haul in the final session. In the middle session, Bartlett did most of the damage with a three-wicket burst that included removing Australia Test captain Tim Paine to a catch at first slip as Tasmania slipped from 3 for 138 to 7 for 149. McDermott, who added 68 for the fourth wicket with Jake Doran to lead a recovery from 3 for 70, had been the best of Tasmania’s early batting as he compiled a steady 74 before driving Bartlett to cover.Michael Neser claimed the first two wickets of the season in the space of four balls•Getty ImagesThe final wicket of the afternoon came through a brilliant rebound catch at slip by Usman Khawaja when Nathan Ellis cut a quicker delivery from legspinner Swepson, who bowled a 23-over spell, with the edge initially parried before Khawaja flung himself to his left to take a brilliant grab.Tasmania fought back in the final session as Webster and Peter Siddle, who joined in the off-season from Victoria, added 57 for the eighth wicket in a stand that Siddle dominated before he was pinned lbw on the back foot by Neser who quickly accounted for Jackson Bird. However, the end did not come quickly for Queensland and the efforts of the first day in the field started to show on the quicks. Webster smartly farmed the strike – although Meredith more than did his part – then brought up his fifty by swinging Bartlett over deep midwicket. An attempted repeat next ball was the end of the innings.Queensland’s openers, Bryce Street and Joe Burns, managed to survive eight very challenging overs from Bird and Siddle to stumps.

Rooney was well versed in dismissals by the time that he reached senior level, with passion being an important part of his game from a young age. He was never one to back down from a challenge, with frustration boiling over at regular intervals from the moment that he first began to make a name for himself in Everton’s academy system.

WHAT HEATON SAID

Veteran goalkeeper Heaton, who spent time in the youth ranks with Wrexham and the Red Devils, has told United’s of his early dealings with Rooney: "I played against him a number of times when he was at Everton. We were obviously the same age and he was even more wild when he was younger, I think!

"I can remember now, we played away, I think we were U14s or U15s, and him and our centre half were fighting on the pitch – and I literally mean fighting! Both got red cards, so I sort of knew of him at the time. He was obviously an incredible player with incredible ability, but he also had that fiery temperament, so yeah, [I've got] some real interesting memories of him."

WHAT HANSI FLICK SAID

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Flick said, "[Szczesny] is in very good shape, but unfortunately he won’t travel to Vitoria because I think he needs more time to be with us and after the break, he’ll be ready and an option.

"For his experience, for his character and for his quality, having Szczesny is very good for the club. When I spoke to him I thought he was a very friendly person, he said that he would contribute in any way he could to the team and I was impressed. He will contribute a lot of things."

Liverpool eye £30 million move for "top defender" starring at Euro 2024

As the Arne Slot era begins on Merseyside, Liverpool are looking to back their new manager and build him the squad that could help them lift the Premier League title next season.

Liverpool prepare for the Slot era at Anfield

The latest transfer news out of Merseyside suggests that FSG are set to give their new manager significant backing in the transfer market this summer.

The Reds are eyeing up improvements all over the pitch with Liverpool currently linked with moves for young talents Kenan Yildiz and Leny Yoro. The former is a Turkish teenager who has excelled with Juventus and could now be making a £25 million move to Merseyside. Yoro has also earned plaudits overseas with his exploits with LOSC Lille last season, earning him a £50 million price tag.

Slot's side are also looking at more established players with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi reportedly on the radar of the Merseyside outfit. Joining Guehi on Liverpool's shopping list is Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio, who has a £51 million release clause that the Reds may look to exercise this summer.

With a central defender clearly high on Liverpool's list of priorities, it appears that the Reds are now looking towards a highly rated defender that Slot knows very well.

Reds keen on move for Feyenoord defender

As first reported by HITC, the Spanish press are stating that Liverpool are interested in a move for Feyenoord defender David Hancko. The outlet reports that the Reds are in competition with Atlético Madrid to secure the services of the £30 million rated Slovakia international, who produced a stunning goal line clearance as his side upset Belgium 1-0 in their Euro 2024 opener.

The 26-year-old made 34 league appearances for Feyenoord as they finished second in the Eredivisie last season, mostly as a central defender, but he can also play on the left. Hancko also featured six times in the Champions League as the Dutch side finished third in a group that contained Lazio, Celtic and the aforementioned Atlético Madrid.

David Hancko for Feyenoord.

Having played under new Reds' boss Slot during his time at Feyenoord, the Slovakian would be a logical signing for Liverpool to make. With Joel Matip set to leave the club this summer and uncertainty around the future of Virgil van Dijk, Hancko would be a quality asset for Slot's new look outfit, adding depth in two positions at once.

In the wake of rumours around his future, former Feyenoord defender Tim de Cler has backed Hancko to excel no matter where he ends up telling the Dutch press (via Sport Witness): “He is so stable and can basically do anything. I just think he is a top defender all-round.

“If he makes it to the next round, and that chance is quite high, his market value will also increase again. More and more clubs are becoming interested. And they were already there.

“I think he can easily handle a club just below the top six in Europe. Then I’m talking about a club like Atlético Madrid or Liverpool. He can certainly handle that.”

With Slot already facing a tough task in filling the shoes of the iconic Jurgen Klopp, it would certainly help his cause to bring in a player who he knows well but also has the quality to succeed at Anfield.

West Brom must now sell forgotten ace who is worth more than Mowatt

West Bromwich Albion supporters would have breathed a major sense of relief after finding out Alex Mowatt had put pen on paper on a new contract to finally commit this future to the Hawthorns, signing a new two-year deal with the Championship outfit.

The good news didn't just stop there, however, with the club also revealing that Kyle Bartley had agreed to stay after fears he'd walk away for nothing had become very real too.

Mowatt staying put could signal the end for one West Brom player though, who has faded into the background owing to recurring injury problems, and has seen his stock take a hit consequently.

Jayson Molumby's time at West Brom

Jayson Molumby hasn't featured in a game for the Baggies since New Year's Day, sidelined with a troubling injury that has even required surgery, with the Irish midfielder's West Brom career hanging in the balance as a result.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion man had made 24 appearances under Corberan last season before pulling up, only picking up one assist from those matches though, with 105 games under his belt in total when he was previously excelling at the second-tier outfit.

jayson-molumby-west-bromwich-albion-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-farke-tyler-adams

With five goals and five assists amassed along the way, it's been an unfortunate and swift decline for the 24-year-old, which could now result in him being pushed towards the exit door soon, especially if he can't wriggle free of being a permanent fixture in the Hawthorns treatment room this forthcoming campaign.

Once on the radar of Leeds United at his prime in the West Midlands, with Carlos Corberan even referring to the Baggies number eight as an "animal" when using him week in week out, West Brom could still sell on Molumby for profit if a suitor was willing to gamble on his services, having purchased him for just £900k from the Seagulls.

Molumby's transfer value at West Brom

Even with setback after setback being thrown his way, Molumby's transfer value, according to Football Transfers, is still higher than that of Mowatt's, despite the former Leeds United man only missing three Championship games all season long.

The Irishman's transfer valuation hasn't taken a significant dent despite his lack of minutes, with his price tag standing at a hefty £2.2m, which makes him a more valuable asset than Mowatt in the current West Brom camp.

In contrast, Molumby's 29-year-old counterpart is worth a lesser £1.5m, despite being a crucial player for Corberan's men last season in their hunt for promotion, with the former Whites man impressively misplacing zero passes in his side's play-off semi-final first-leg stalemate against Southampton.

2024

Picking up four goals and four assists during the 23/24 campaign once saw Molumby come in as having a worth of £3.6m, as can be seen looking at the table above, with a real concern now that his valuation could continue to plummet, if he finds himself way down the pecking order, even when back at full sharpness.

The 24-year-old could be sold on soon, therefore, particularly when you consider his contract also expires in 2025, meaning they could end up losing him for nothing if they're not careful.

Away from Molumby, Mowatt will no doubt be expected to be a calming and influential presence again next season from a holding role, as the Baggies address their wounds from their play-off disappointment and push for promotion once more.

Perth Scorchers sign up Colin Munro for 2020-21 BBL season

They have also roped in Joe Clarke as an early-season replacement for Jason Roy

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2020The Perth Scorchers have signed New Zealand batsman Colin Munro for the 2020-21 Big Bash League season. Munro recently missed out on an NZC contract, but remains a highly sought-after T20 cricketer. He is fifth on the ICC’s T20I rankings for batsmen, and his T20I strike rate of 156.44 is the fourth-highest among batsmen with at least 500 runs. He was a key member of the Trinbago Knight Riders team that won the Caribbean Premier League in September, scoring 207 runs, including two fifties, at a strike rate of 133.54.”To jump on board with such a successful, established club that has been playing great cricket since the BBL started was really what appealed to me… it’s going to be pretty special to be part of it,” Munro said.”The Scorchers have some world-class players in their list, so to rub shoulders with them this summer is going to be really exciting.”Munro joins the England pair of Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone in the Scorchers’ overseas contingent. While Munro will be available through the entire BBL season, Roy and Livingstone will miss the first three matches of the Scorchers’ campaign while touring South Africa with England’s white-ball squads.Until Roy arrives, the Scorchers will have the services of the 24-year-old Nottinghamshire batsman Joe Clarke, who has been signed up as a replacement player. Clarke boasts a career T20 strike rate of 149.05, and finished fifth on the run charts in the 2020 season of the T20 Blast, scoring 371 runs at a strike rate of 175.00.

'Generally obstructive' Omphile Ramela axed from CSA interim board

“He does not have the discipline to accept majority decisions,” interim board chair Yacoob says

Firdose Moonda15-Dec-2020Omphile Ramela, the former South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) president, has been removed from Cricket South Africa’s interim board while Xolani Vonya, the former president of Easterns, has been recused. This means the board has shrunk from its original allocation of nine members to seven and will continue in that capacity to clean up CSA.Ramela, who resigned from the SACA presidency in November and has since been replaced by Khaya Zondo, was seen to be “generally obstructive,” in the interim board and was given notice of allegations against him via email on Monday. He was called to a meeting on Tuesday, in which he could respond to those allegations in person or through an attorney. Neither Ramela nor any legal representative of his attended Tuesday’s meeting and Ramela was then removed by the directors present, with all but one member – who abstained – voting him off the board. On Thursday last week, interim board chair Zak Yacoob, confirmed the recusal of the two members – Ramela has since been removed – and detailed the issues the board was having with Ramela.”He has been generally obstructive in relation to board matters, generally defending the indefensible, basically refusing to accept the majority,” Yacoob said. “He seems to make a distinction between what is right and majority decisions, and if he feels that majority decisions are wrong that he can continue to fight about them for hours and hours. He does not have the discipline to accept majority decisions. He has been obstructive in relation to every difficult decision we have had to take, and it has been virtually impossible to deal with him.”Because of the limited time the interim board has to do its work – they were initially appointed for three months but that could be extended to six – Yacoob said their actions needed to be swift and decisive, which Ramela was not supporting. “In a three-month period, if meetings last for hours and hours, to deal with obstructive people who keep saying they don’t understand this and they don’t understand that when things are completely explained, then the board is not going to be able to finish its work,” he said. “We judged that the chance of finishing our work was lessened considerably by these obstructive tactics.”Vonya is obtaining legal advice on his future participation on the board after his participation was suspended because of allegations against him from his time at Easterns.Ramela and Vonya’s non-participation in the board means that the only people on the board with cricketing experience are former CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat and former Western Province CEO and cricket historian Andre Odendaal.

Wolves eye move for £20m ace with a "big future" to replace current player

Whilst the transfer window is still in its early days, the big news out of Molineux centres around the first team players that look set to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers and the efforts already going on to replace them.

O'Neil set to lose players this summer

Max Kilman's £40million move to West Ham United has occupied many of the recent headlines in the West Midlands as Wolves will now enter next season without their captain. In an attempt to replace the outgoing Englishman, Wolves are already said to be making a move for Borussia Mönchengladbach's Nico Elvedi.

Recent reports have also suggested that current back-up keeper Daniel Bentley could be on his way out of Molineux with Arsenal interested in a move for the 30-year-old. Bentley could be joined in North London by Pedro Neto, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

With a number of Gary O'Neil's first choice stars attracting interest from the Premier League's top six, Wolves have already started work on finding replacements.

Wolves eye reinforcements between the sticks

As first reported by Give Me Sport, Wolves are weighing up a move for Sunderland shot-stopper Anthony Patterson. The outlet claims that O'Neil is eager to replace the outgoing Bentley and views the Black Cats' number one as the perfect option.

It is clear that the Wolves manager wants a strong back-up to Jose Sa and after Patterson's performances on Wearside last season, there is no doubt that he could fulfill this duty with ease.

Patterson appeared in all but one of Sunderland's league games last season as the 24-year-old stood out as a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign. Despite his side finishing 16th in the Championship last time out, Patterson managed to keep the joint fourth most clean sheets in the division, showing that the Black Cats' struggles were not down to his actions.

The 24-year-old's performances on Wearside saw him earn significant praise from former Black Cats' boss Tony Mowbray who said of the player's future: "It's amazing to think of what he's going to be like when he's 30 and has still got six to eight years still to play when he's so young now and so good at what he does. He obviously has a big future."

Sunderland's former manager Tony Mowbray.

Whilst Wolves will clearly be eager to pursue a deal for Patterson, it is likely that Sunderland will not make negotiations easy for the West Midlands outfit.

The report from Give Me Sport states that the Black Cats have slapped a £20million price tag on the goalkeeper. Additionally, Patterson's current contract will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2028, meaning that there is no pressure on the club to sell this summer.

Whilst Bentley's move away from Molineux has yet to be confirmed by the club, Wolves will be eager to not be caught short this summer and agreeing an early deal for Patterson would be a wise move from O'Neil's side.
