Victoria play it safe as spinners cause some nervy moments

Queensland left a target of 236 in 45 overs but it was never in the home side’s sights

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Feb-2022Victoria came through a final session trial by spin as their clash against Queensland ended in a draw after declining to have a dip at a run chase offered by Jimmy Peirson’s declaration.A target of 236 in a minimum 45 overs was always unlikely and any chance of Victoria, who are top of the table, setting themselves up for it vanished when they lost early wickets which opened the door for Queensland to create some nervy moments.”We had every intention of trying to chase, but just got into a little bit of a hole against the new ball,” Victoria coach Chris Rogers said. “It was always going to be tough against the spin on that kind of wearing wicket with the footmarks. With one of our best players out there in Nic Maddinson, he felt that it was going to be too hard to try and chase, and we supported that decision.”Travis Dean edged to third slip in the fourth over and the in-form Peter Handscomb was given out to a top-edged hook although did not appear impressed by the decision. When Marcus Harris was beaten by one which skidded through from Matt Renshaw, Victoria were 3 for 33.Queensland crowded the bat – in the final hour everyone was in a catching position – with Mitchell Swepson, Matt Kuhnemann, Renshaw and Gurinder Sandhu, the latter bowling offspin rather than his usual seam up, rattling through the overs and they created a number of near-misses for the batters. However, Nic Maddinson, who had scored a century in the first innings and will now be on stand-by for the tour of Pakistan should there be any late issues before the squad departs, and Matt Short survived 30 overs.Mark Steketee, who has been drafted into the Pakistan tour after Michael Neser’s injury, only bowled two overs in the second innings before leaving the field nursing his side but after the match Peirson said it was a precautionary move and all indications were that Steketee would be fine.Earlier in the day it appeared that Victoria might be able to force a result themselves. Queensland had resumed just 58 ahead with three wickets down and Sam Truloff fell in the 11th over of the day. When Jack Clayton reverse swept to slip and Sandhu was caught behind, Queensland’s lead was 141 with considerable time left.Peirson and James Bazley prevented further loss and then opened their shoulders to push Victoria towards their declaration which included Jon Holland being taken for 17 in an over before removing Peirson to a catch in the deep.

The Rondo, women's soccer edition: Is there any fallout from USWNT losing SheBelieves Cup, did Emma Hayes get her squad right, and what's next for Trinity Rodman?

GOAL writers discuss USWNT's SheBelieves Cup takeaways, and whether Rodman will be next in NWSL exodus

The USWNT had their first real blip under Emma Hayes, failing to win the SheBelieves Cup on the back of a disappointing 2-1 loss to a well-drilled Japan side – the first loss of Hayes's 18-match U.S. tenure. To the outsider who is used to seeing this side win routinely, it would have been a disappointing result.

After all, the USWNT usually thrive here. But how big of a deal was this loss? Hayes left some top players at home – including Naomi Girma, Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson – and had to make do without a few others due to various injuries. Perhaps it's not as disastrous as it might seem, in context.

And with some new faces integrated into the XI, the positives might just outweigh the negatives. Ally Sentnor impressed in her pursuit to offer competition to the front line. Lily Yohannes played with quality beyond her years. A full strength team might walk this thing. Still, results are results, and, on paper, it looked poor.

But that's not the only storyline in American women's soccer. The NWSL has seen an exodus of sorts in recent months, with some top talents heading to Europe. Girma was first. Others will surely follow. Could Washington Spirit star Rodman be next?

GOAL and INDIVISA writers break it down in a women's soccer edition of… The Rondo.

Getty ImagesWas failing to win SheBelieves Cup a big deal for USWNT?

Celia Balf: Not even the slightest. It's part of the process. You would actually be more concerned if Emma didn't take any chances in the lineup. She did what she said she would and fielded two very different teams to see everybody. Japan is very good, and the USWNT were tested. Seeing the gaps in the USWNT roster and getting a sense as to how different players operate with one another was a key takeaway from the games.

Amee Ruszkai: No. That first loss was always going to come eventually, and for it to happen against a really good Japan team – one that took the full-strength USWNT to extra-time at the Olympics, let's not forget – is no disgrace. And at the end of the day, it's just that one result which cost the U.S. another SheBelieves Cup. This stuff happens, especially when most of the roster is still in pre-season.

Ryan Tolmich: Not really? Historically, this is an aberration, obviously, as the USWNT almost always wins this thing but, at this point in the cycle, winning isn't as important. This group was missing so many starters that it isn't a real reflection of where this team is. Hayes knew that from the jump, so she used this tournament as a chance to test young talent. That, by and large, worked. Because of that, it's mission accomplished, even if that mission would have felt a bit better with a trophy at the end.

AdvertisementAFPWas Hayes wise to not bring a full-strength squad?

CB: To Emma, the squad was full strength, at least for the purpose of the matches. The team represented some new faces, but also veterans in Crystal Dunn, Emily Sonnet, etc. Sure, they were missing Girma, Swanson, Wilson, Rodman and Rose Lavelle, but at the same time, the squad has two years ahead to build out their depth.

AR: It gives her the chance to properly look at other players, and that feels wise. Hayes knows full well what the likes of Wilson, Swanson and Rodman can offer, for example, and leaving them off for one camp means those are three more spots in attack that can be filled by players she hasn't seen in this environment. Those players then become more on her radar as she looks to build out the player pool for 2027. It's a long-term approach and it takes advantage of a lack of competitive fixtures that some of the USWNT's big European rivals, as well as some others, don't have.

RT: Part of it was out of her hands due to injury but, yes, rotation was key for this. The situation called for it, given the tournament schedule and timing on the calendar. Regardless, the USWNT is in the "pool expansion" part of the cycle. This was the perfect chance to take fringe players, place them in competitive environments and see how they fare. These weren't friendlies, and it was important to see players in those scenarios. So, because of that, yes, it was the perfect time to look away from the established stars.

Getty ImagesWhich USWNT players stood out across the three games?

CB: Sentnor. She was going to add something to the attack for the USWNT, but didn't know just how fast she would contribute. Her dribbling ability is rapid and she has a vision for the goal. Goalscorers like her aren't made anymore, and she proved on numerous occasions that she can find the back of the net – from many different spots on the field. Yazmeen Ryan was also superb. Her work rate on the wing is integral to the pace at which the USWNT play, and she also has an innate ability to connect passes in tight spaces.

AR: It has to be three of the youngest players on camp: Yohannes, Sentnor and Gisele Thompson. All three caught the eye in a window that always felt about looking beyond the established names. There is a ton of hype around Yohannes and yet, she consistently seems to live up to it. Sentnor was wonderfully productive across the whole tournament to really make a statement. And Thompson, still a teenager and having just played her first season of senior soccer, quietly impressed at the back, too.

RT: Sentnor was the big winner, of course, but, wow, Yohannes was good. The teenager made her big international decision late last year, choosing the U.S. over the Netherlands, but this tournament felt like her true USWNT arrival. Yohannes showed that she might actually be the best passer in the pool, one that can open up defenses in ways that her teammates don't even understand yet. Yohannes, in her appearances in this tournament, quickly made it clear just how lucky the USNWT is to have her, both near and long-term.

Brad Mills-Imagn ImagesShould Rodman go to Europe, or stay in NWSL?

CB: She doesn't to go, but she very well can. She doesn't need to go abroad to build up her brand or gain more experience, but if she has a desire to experience the game abroad, why not? What she can do for the Spirit and the NWSL is extraordinary, and she brings so much flair, strength and technical soundness. Like many of her U.S. teammates, the time is now to experience something new. So yes, we could potentially see her do a year or so overseas.

AR: She doesn't necessarily need to go to Europe, no. She's already one of the best forwards in the world and her development isn't going to be hindered by staying in the NWSL. She's far too good for that to be the case. That said, moving across the pond would expose her to a different style, different challenges in terms of the defenses she's trying to get the better of, and introduce her to different ways to beat those opponents. It would add some new strings to her bow, as well as immersing her in all the cultural differences. It always depends on the person, though, as off-pitch factors can often impact a player's ability to do well abroad if they are not suited to the whole package.

RT: Rodman needs to be where she wants to be. She's an elite talent, one that can walk into just about any team in the world. When you're that good, you can pick and choose what you want. Does she want the comfort of home or a European adventure? Does she want to be the face of the NWSL or to represent one of the biggest brands in the world overseas? Either way, it's Rodman's call, and, given her youth, she really is in no rush to make it. Europe will remain an option, as will the NWSL. Because of that, she can do what makes her happy.

Perfect for Gordon: Newcastle can replace Almiron with "insane" £51m winger

Last season, Newcastle United encountered hurdles, and some proved to be insurmountable. After failing to qualify for Europe, Eddie Howe’s side could find solace in their creativity, their cause.

The honed and concerted attacking approach bore fruits and placed the St. James’ Park squad among the most productive playmaking sides in the Premier League. That, this season, has evaporated, with goals coming at a splutter rather than a cascade.

With just 19 big chances created this season, the Magpies are failing to take flight. Bottom-placed Southampton, for contextualisation, have created the fewest big chances with 16.

Newcastle are struggling to hit that fluent stride of 2022/23. There were flashes last year, but injuries precluded the same lofty heights from being scaled. Now, players need to step up, rise to that level once again. Anthony Gordon, certainly, needs to quickly recapture his giddy form.

Why Newcastle need to replace Anthony Gordon

Obviously, Newcastle shouldn’t get rid of their 2023/24 Player of the Season. Their £45m starboy from Everton, poster of 12 goals and 11 assists last season.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

But he’s “regressed” this season and that’s the truth, with reporter Charlie Bennett saying as such. Against West Ham most recently, for example, Gordon was hooked before 70 minutes were clocked after earlier missing a great chance and altogether failing to inspire his side’s attacking success.

Two goals and an assist from 11 matches isn’t terrible, especially with some neat underlying data suggesting that the fine form will return at some stage, but he’s struggling, especially when playing out on the right.

Gordon is much better on his left, much more confident in his movements, his passing, his striking. His tactical flexibility is a fantastic asset, but he’s regularly shoehorned on the alternate flank due to a lack of options.

Greater regularity in his favoured deployment can only be a good thing for this talent and the overall fluency of Howe’s set-up. With January approaching, Newcastle need to act.

Newcastle looking at attacking recruit

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is right at the top of Newcastle’s Christmas wishlist, although it won’t be easy to sign one of the Premier League’s finest forwards this season, with a fee upward of £50m sure to be required.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo

United are curious to explore options from overseas, and appear to be intrigued by the prospect of signing Johan Bakayoko, with Belgian outlet Footnews confirming the Magpies’ interest over the weekend.

Having considered a move for some time, Newcastle are now ready to strengthen and will target the winger this January, though PSV Eindhoven would expect to find an offer reaching €60m (£51m) at their doorstep.

What Johan Bakayoko would bring to Newcastle

Bakayoko, aged 21, has emerged as one of the Netherlands’ finest talents in recent years, winning the Dutch top-flight title last term and posting 14 goals and 14 assists apiece across all competitions.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has hailed the winger for his “insane” quality and the stars appear to be aligning for this one, whose performances speak of a successful future in a top division such as the Premier League. With Miguel Almiron struggling to earn minutes, this is surely a deal to forge ahead with.

The Paraguayan winger’s long-gone purple patch doesn’t look like it will be recovered on English soil, a sentiment that Howe seems to agree with, for the 30-year-old has played just 103 minutes of Premier League football this season across five matches, starting once.

That starting berth, during the 2-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, prompted the Chronicle Live to chalk Almiron off with a 4/10 match rating, criticising the ‘disappointing outing.’

Almiron’s paucity of minutes and steady decline mean that he will be sold for a fee below £10m, according to reporter Craig Hope. This must be accepted by the Toon bosses, who need to recoup what they can this winter and turn their transfer cannon toward Holland.

Interestingly, Bakayoko slightly outperformed Yankuba Minteh while he was on loan at Feyenoord last season. Newcastle sold the Gambian talent to Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth £30m this summer to placate PSR, and he has shown promise on the South Coast.

You’d think Bakayoko, though inexperienced, would bring more to the table than Almiron, who can’t even find a seat. After all, PSV’s wunderkind has continued to impress in the Eredivisie and the Champions League this season, and a move to a top suitors feels a matter simply of time.

Liverpool appeared to hold an interest in the Belgium international this summer but opted against a move, instead bolstering their stocked frontline with Federico Chiesa. Even so, the scouting reports spoke loudly: this is a rising star with a ceiling fit for a cathedral.

Just look at the data. As per FBref, Bakayoko ranks among the top 8% of positional peers in the Dutch Eredivisie for goals scored and shot-creating actions, the top 1% for progressive carries and passes attempted and the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90.

Raw athleticism meets fast-developing technical quality. Bakayoko would surely dovetail right into the Newcastle system, allowing Gordon to feature in his favoured role and Almiron to complete a move away.

It’s for the good of the squad. Howe just needs to ensure it happens.

AFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The game between PSG and Liverpool might have ended 1-0 in favour of the visitors, but it was the hosts who dominated the proceedings. Luis Enrique's side had 71 per cent of the possession and recorded 27 shots, of which 10 were on target. The Reds had Alisson to thank for his superhuman performance between the posts, as Harvey Elliott came away with the winner with Liverpool's only shot on target in the 87th minute.

As bad as Walker: Pep must ruthlessly drop 5/10 Man City star

Manchester City’s miserable run of form continued on Saturday afternoon, with Crystal Palace claiming a point against the four-in-a-row Premier League champions.

It means that Pep Guardiola’s typically imperious outfit have secured just one win from nine matches in all competitions, and hands first-placed Liverpool an eight-point lead – with Arne Slot’s side holding a game in hand.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola

It’s patent that the Cityzens need to complete a rebuild across the coming transfer windows, and there’s one man above all else who is facing a pile of detractors after a spate of wretched performances.

Kyle Walker struggles once again

One of the greatest right-backs in Premier League history, it would appear that Father Time is starting to catch up with Kyle Walker, whose pace has deserted him as he continues to move toward his 35th birthday.

Manchester City players vs Crystal Palace

He’s been singled out for criticism on numerous occasions across the past few months, and rightly so. The Manchester Evening News could only provide the veteran with a 4/10 match rating, correspondent Simon Bajkowski noting that ‘the miserable season continues.’

Though the Three Lions star managed to make three tackles and win three of his four ground duels, as per Sofascore, his positional sense, or lack of it, played Daniel Munoz onside for the opening goal of the game. Moreover, he was easily beaten for the Eagles’ second.

You’d imagine that when Guardiola turns to address his side’s need for incomings, signing a new right-back will be the first port of call.

Honestly, though, the entire right flank failed to produce against a voluble Selhurst Park that proved well worth the point gained. Savinho is a talented young winger with plenty of room for growth, but it’s hard to argue that he’s at the requisite level for Guardiola’s project as things stand.

Why Pep must brutally drop Savinho

Savinho is electric-paced and creative too, but he’s yet to find his feet in Manchester. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of wingers in the English top flight this season for shot-creating actions and the top 2% for progressive carries per 90, so there’s clearly some wonderful quality there.

The 20-year-old Brazilian joined the Sky Blues from French club Troyes this summer for about £31m, but he’s struggling to get to grips with the rigorous Premier League and lacks bite in key moments.

This was certainly the case against Palace, for he was hooked after 79 minutes having failed to stamp his authority on the match, taking just 34 touches – less than shot-stopper Stefan Ortega (42) – losing four duels and registering only one key pass.

It’s hardly surprising that MEN gave him a 5/10 match rating and rebuked his ‘anonymous’ showing. Given that he’d been reduced to cameos across City’s previous two top-flight clashes, it’s done him no favours as Guardiola desperately plots for a revival.

Timm van der Gugten shines with bat and ball to keep Glamorgan hopes alive

Ben Duckett falls five runs shy of second straight ton as Nottinghamshire’s lead looks fragile

ECB Reporters Network16-Apr-2022Glamorgan will enter the final day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Nottinghamshire feeling that they are in a strong position to complete their first victory in a red-ball match at Trent Bridge since 1998.Building on a lead of 77 on first innings, in which Timm van der Gugten’s 62 helped the last two wickets add 131 runs, they had Nottinghamshire 224 for for 8 at the close, the Netherlands international seam bowler having also starred with the ball by taking four wickets for 51.All four came after tea, starting with that of key man Ben Duckett, who fell five runs short of posting a second century in the match. No other Nottinghamshire batsman has made more than 30 and a lead of 147 looks a fragile one.Nottinghamshire, pre-season favourites to win promotion from Division Two, pulled off an improbable win over Sussex at Hove last week. Another would seem unlikely, although ninth-wicket pair Brett Hutton and Joey Evison – batting with a runner because of a sore toe – added 37 in the last 14 overs and a few more on the final morning could still set up an intriguing finish.Related

Having let a good position slip on Friday, Nottinghamshire needed another seven overs on the third morning to take the last Glamorgan wicket, van der Gugten’s measured contribution with the bat ending when he miscued Liam Patterson-White’s left-arm spin and was caught at long-off.Michael Hogan, 19 not out, then demonstrated that his prowess with the ball does not wane even in his 41st year by removing both Nottinghamshire openers without scoring. He surprised Haseeb Hameed in his second over with a ball that climbed and looped to gully off the shoulder of the bat and, in his next over, banged another in short that Ben Slater went to pull but could only glove through to the wicketkeeper.Duckett and Joe Clarke were briefly on top as Nottinghamshire recovered from two down for one run to 45 for 2 at lunch. But Hogan and van der Gugten were able to dry up the runs immediately after lunch and Michael Neser returned to have Clarke caught behind, pushing at one that found a thin edge.Having survived a half-chance to midwicket on 32, Duckett went on the attack, going to his half-century with a lovely shot through the offside for four off Neser, following up with three legside boundaries against Andrew Salter’s off-spin.He lost another partner as skipper Steven Mullaney fell to a dab outside off stump that lacked conviction and turned into another catch for Chris Cooke.By tea, Duckett had moved into the 90s, but with Nottinghamshire still only 81 in front, Glamorgan knew that his early removal in the third session could be decisive. In the event, it came only four overs in, as the left-hander, with rare indecisiveness, pushed tentatively at a ball from van der Gugten only for it to leave him just enough to take the edge. David Lloyd took the catch at slip.Van der Gugten, finding some swing with the old ball, claimed his second wicket as Liam Patterson-White was adjudged leg before seeking to work one off his pads, a third as Sam Northeast dived full length to his left to snare Moores at second slip and a fourth as Northeast held one just over the ground to remove James Pattinson. But Hutton and Evison could yet turn the target into a tricky one, although there is a question mark over whether Evison will be able to bowl.

The 53-year-old Italian, who previously spent over a decade shaping Atletico Madrid’s squad, has reportedly agreed to join the Gunners and is expected to start work as soon as his contract is finalised. With no concerns over breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations, Arsenal are ready to invest heavily, as reported by . Berta is believed to be targeting reinforcements across multiple positions, including a back-up goalkeeper, left-back, defensive midfielder, left-winger, striker, and cover for Bukayo Saka. Additionally, an all-round central midfielder could also be brought in to further strengthen the squad.

One of Arsenal’s key targets this summer is Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with the club reportedly looking to activate the £51m ($66m) release clause in his contract. The Spain international has long been on Arsenal’s radar, and Berta sees him as a key component in Mikel Arteta’s midfield plans. The club is also monitoring Athletic Club winger Nico Williams and Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, with sources indicating that both players could be part of Arsenal's summer spending spree.

Newcastle United duo Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak have also been identified as priority signings. Berta is particularly keen on Guimaraes, believing the Brazilian midfielder could add dynamism and control to Arteta’s system alongside Zubimendi.

While signing Isak from Newcastle could be a challenge, Arsenal have also held discussions regarding RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. The young Slovenian striker is said to be interested in a move to north London, making him a viable alternative if negotiations for Isak stall. The Gunners have also kept tabs on Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who was linked with a move to the Emirates earlier this season.

Penalty heartbreak in the Scottish League Cup final at the hands of bitter rivals Celtic over the weekend was the latest problematic result for Clement’s side in a season that has not gone to plan.

After battling back gamely to level at 3-3 and take the tie to extra time and penalties, the Ibrox side lost out as Kasper Schmeichel saved Ridvan Yilmaz’s penalty in what was the only miss of the shootout, to help ensure Celtic claimed the trophy.

Rangers have undoubtedly improved since their slow start to the season, but remain a mammoth 11 points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership after losing three times in the opening weeks of the season.

With that title dream likely over, and the League Cup also no longer on the table, the Scottish Cup and Europa League are arguably all that the Gers have left to play for this season, and it is in Europe that they have impressed.

Currently sitting eighth with two games left to play, they have lost just once and held Tottenham to a credible 1-1 draw in their most recent outing, leaving them in a strong spot to qualify for the knockout rounds. Now though, attention is seemingly turning towards future transfers in 2025.

Rangers enquire about signing new defender

That is according to a report coming out of Morocco, which claims that Rangers have lodged an enquiry to sign 24-year-old defender Hatim Essaouabi ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

A 6ft 1 centre-back, Essaouabi currently plies his trade for Moroccan champions FAR Rabat, the same side that Rangers plucked Hamza Igamane from in the most recent summer transfer window.

Now, their scouts have been “impressed” by his former teammate and compatriot Essaouabi, and the report claims that the Scottish giants are now “seriously considering recruiting him during the next summer transfer window”.

Rangers have an "unbelievable" star who could now be their next big sale

Rangers could strike gold with this Ibrox star after some fine displays in 2024/25.

Though the club signed Robin Propper over the summer, Rangers are still light at centre-back, with Leon King and Clinton Nsiala both young and inexperienced, while Leon Balogun will turn 37 years old at the end of the season and is due to see his contract at Ibrox expire, meaning that Rangers may need to add another option in the heart of defence.

Essaouabi could prove a logical replacement, with the defender unlikely to be an expensive signing and, given that he is just 24 years old, approaching the peak of his career but with over a decade likely still ahead of him.

No mention of price tag or Essaouabi’s own desires are made in the report, but Rangers already have a link through Igamane and could return next summer to use the same formula once more to upgrade their defence.
