Newcastle now ready to match "phenomenal" World Cup winner’s release clause

As they continue to look for bargain deals, Newcastle United are reportedly ready to trigger the release clause of a World Cup winner in a deal that would be worth just €12m (£10m).

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been limited by profit and sustainability concerns in the last two windows, leaving Eddie Howe to come up with internal solutions more often than not. But when the summer arrives, they could look to bring an end to that problem by selling before they can buy.

Just who heads for the exit door remains to be seen, however. Those at St James’ Park already ditched Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly in the January transfer window to free up some space in their budget, but they could yet need to do more if they want to welcome blockbuster signings.

Of course, Alexander Isak is a name who’s been linked with a move away in recent weeks amid another excellent season. Whether Newcastle sacrifice their star man when the summer arrives seems unlikely, however. Instead, the they could look towards the transfer market in pursuit of bargain deals.

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are now ready to trigger Paulo Dybala’s €12m (£10m) release clause before it expires at the end of July at AS Roma. A World Cup winner and a player who needs little introduction, the Magpies would be landing an undeniable bargain if they secured the Argentine’s signature.

At 31 years old, Dybala is far from a long-term option but the depth he would provide is no bad thing. Newcastle already suffered the consequences of failing to welcome fresh faces the last time they qualified for European football. Now, two points away from the Premier League’s top four, they won’t want to make the same mistake.

"Phenomenal" Dybala would thrive alongside Isak

Whilst keeping hold of Isak may limit Newcastle’s spending once again in the summer, it would quickly prove to be the right decision if they managed to welcome a bargain buy in Dybala, who would thrive next to the Swede. The Roma star would arrive with plenty of European experience and as a player who has earned plenty of praise wherever he has starred in Italy.

That unsurprisingly includes in Rome, where club legend Francesco Totti told reporters: “Dybala is phenomenal, he’s above the rest, he’s always proved his worth and I’m really happy that he’s come to Roma, he deserves it all.

“It’s fair that the city has a player like him, of his level. You can tell when players are a bit different from the others, and he’s showing it by scoring and by playing great. We’re happy to have him with us at Roma and we’re enjoying it.”

Praise can get no higher than that of Totti’s in Rome, but that may not prevent Dybala from heading for the exit door if Newcastle come calling. The World Cup winner could have quite the decision to make when the summer arrives as the Magpies pursue a bargain deal.

Bavuma: Pakistan defeat not a concern but 'a bit of a wake-up call'

South Africa’s captain refuses to blame slippery conditions for their fielding errors

Andrew McGlashan03-Nov-2022Temba Bavuma has admitted the “wheels probably came off” for South Africa in the field at the SCG as they suffered their first defeat of the T20 World Cup but did not see it as a major cause for alarm with progression still firmly in their hands.Pakistan had been reduced to 43 for 4 in the seventh over but managed to post 185 for 9 with 117 coming off the second ten overs which featured a significant deterioration in South Africa’s fielding, although the latter part of the innings took place under drizzle.Related

Shadab keeps Pakistan's semi-final hopes alive

Bavuma did not believe his attack had been agile enough to adjust to conditions as they changed, but with the final group game against Netherlands, they should still reach the semi-finals although will concede the top spot to India if they beat Zimbabwe.”I wouldn’t say it’s a concern,” Bavuma said. “Probably is a bit of a wake-up call. I thought the first ten overs, we were superb. We were able to get them under pressure. Then after that, the wheels probably came off.”Conditions changed a little bit with the ball going to skid [on]. I think in terms of our awareness, in terms of adapting to that, we were very slow. We allowed them to get momentum into their innings, and they were able to get a formidable score on the board.”We’re going to use our pace. We’re going to use our bounce. Unfortunately for us today, it probably wasn’t the right plan considering the conditions out there.”Like I said, I don’t think it’s a big concern. Yes, there are talking points for us, areas that we can learn from. Maybe it’s a performance that we needed to kind of bring us down back to earth.”Bavuma did not want to use a damp ball and slippery underfoot conditions as an excuse for an uncharacteristic number of fielding errors.”Maybe the intensity lowered a bit for the guys. Individually, the guys know, but it’s definitely not the standard of fielding that we pride ourselves on,” he said. “I guess we had a bit of a lifeline probably because of the way we played up until this point, but I think from now on it’s about us playing our best cricket. If we come unstuck, we come unstuck. Today we didn’t play our best cricket.”

“Maybe it’s a performance that we needed to kind of bring us down back to earth.”Bavuma on the loss

South Africa went into the match without the in-form David Miller who suffered back spasms although Bavuma indicated it should not be a major concern for the games to come. And the captain himself was able to make his highest T20I score since the previous World Cup with 36 off 19 balls which briefly put South Africa ahead of the DLS target.”It’s been a while since I hit the ball in the middle,” he said. “I felt a lot better today…I guess I just tried to enjoy it, to be honest.”

A Qatari consortium are said to be hatching a divisive plan in their potential bid for a takeover of Tottenham Hotspur, as they eventually seek to buy the north London club.

Tottenham supporters plan Daniel Levy protest against Man United

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, amidst yet another disappointing campaign, is facing more protests from frustrated Lilywhites supporters – who are planning to voice their dissatisfaction during their clash with Man United this weekend.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is under mounting pressure, amid a crippling injury crisis and serious lack of form, with the north Londoners closer to relegation than they are to European qualification.

A large section of critics believe Tottenham’s major squad shortage ultimately comes down to a lack of good investments in players over the years, and there are calls for more funds to be reinvested into building a squad that can genuinely compete at the top end of the Premier League.

“The thing that causes a lot of the frustration, you can see there’s certain figures around the club supportive of Daniel Levy and you hear lines like ‘who do Spurs fans think they are? They’re so entitled,” said Spurs fan and Rule The Roost podcaster, Jack Hussey.

“He’s built them this good stadium and they’ve had Champions League football and they should be grateful for that’.

“On one hand you can appreciate that – but, you have to also take into consideration, Spurs fans are charged one of the highest amounts of money to watch the club, ticket prices are through the roof.

“Daniel Levy is the highest paid chairman in the Premier League, but the figures show you – Tottenham’s wage spend ratio to turnover is one of the lowest in the league – something there isn’t making sense.

“I have to default back to the fact that it’s only been the last 20 years or so that Tottenham haven’t been regularly winning things, prior to ENIC and Daniel Levy taking over, Tottenham regularly won trophies and competed at the top end of the table.”

Qatari consortium looking to buy Tottenham in "controversial" plan

Now, according to The Guardian and reliable journalist Matt Hughes, private Qatari investors could now be looking to hand Spurs a way out of the ENIC era.

Indeed, it is believed that the Qatari consortium is looking to buy Tottenham, with the potential takeover likely coming in the form of a phased buyout as they eventually seek to acquire full control of the club.

"ENICOUT" banneroutside Spurs

However, in a “controversial” plan, those prospective buyers are also thinking about keeping Levy on with a long-term management contract – regardless of whether ENIC becomes a minority shareholder.

In a further bit of crucial information, these mystery bidders from the Middle East are not thought to be the Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) or Sheikh Jassim – who were involved in a bidding war to buy Man United.

Past reports have also indicated that ENIC and Joe Lewis would be seeking a “minimum” of £4 billion to sell their majority Spurs shares.

Renshaw just has to be patient, with Test tours of India and England on the horizon.”I am ready,” Renshaw told AAP when asked about the possibility of a Test recall. “The last few years I have definitely re-thought about how I go about my cricket.”The Aussie stuff is important but you can get caught up with your mindset and trying to play for that, rather than just playing for my team and doing well for Queensland.”That is the big learning I have had, along with enjoying my cricket. Maguire put in a commanding performance in United's 3-0 first-leg win at Athletic Club on Thursday, with fans saying his display was Brazil-esque. After finding out supporters had named him "Harrydinho" on social media, the England international – who showed great wing play for Casemiro's opener – couldn't contain his delight.

He told TNT Sports after the game: "Brilliant… I'm sure there's a few nicknames out there for me. But the win was more important."

He went on to add: "The tie is not done…I'm sure Old Trafford will be like this place [for the second leg]. It was nice to do a bit of dribbling out there [that led to the first goal]. They must have trusted me to put in the cross."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have had a wretched season but it could yet, somewhat, be salvaged if they win the Europa League – which would ensure their passage into next term's Champions League. The Red Devils deservedly beat the Spanish side in their own backyard and now are on the brink of another European final. And Maguire played a big part in that.

TVNZ becomes NZC's exclusive domestic broadcaster for next three seasons

The deal is for all of New Zealand men’s and women’s international matches as well as the Super Smash games

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Dec-2022TVNZ is set to become the exclusive domestic broadcaster for all of New Zealand men’s and women’s international matches as well as the Super Smash from the beginning of 2023-24 home summer until the end of 2025-26 season. The move, according to an NZC media release, has come following Spark’s decision to exit the sports streaming market. The new deal with New Zealand’s largest free-to-air broadcaster will officially begin in July 2023, with the current home summer programme to be screened on Spark Sport and TVNZ. In addition to over 300 international and domestic cricket matches being screened live on a combination of TVNZ1 and Duke over the agreed three-year period, these fixtures will also be streamed on TVNZ+. Whisper, the production company, will continue to produce the matches for broadcast. The release also stated that the value of NZC’s media rights package has not changed.”Spark Sport has contributed significantly to the New Zealand sports environment, by introducing competition to the market, increasing the volume of cricket produced for broadcast, and implementing cutting-edge technology,” NZC chief executive David White said.”Notwithstanding the disappointment for Spark Sport, this is a very good outcome for the game of cricket in New Zealand. It safeguards the professional game; it safeguards the community game, and it provides unprecedented access for Kiwi cricket fans.”We’re delighted New Zealanders can look forward to this level of free-to-air coverage – it’s a game-changer for the sport in this country.”NZC had entered into a six-year deal with Spark Sport in 2019 to show all home cricket, ending a relationship with Sky that dates back to 1995, with a small amount of cricket broadcast on TVNZ.

Ipswich have a star out on loan who’s outscoring all of the squad bar Delap

Ipswich Town would really cement themselves as a modern feel-good story if the Tractor Boys can pull off Premier League survival come the close of the ongoing campaign.

But, if the Tractor Boys were to taste the disappointment of an instant return to the Championship, they should be well equipped enough to make a push straight back up to the top-flight.

Whatever reality does slap the Suffolk side in the face, it would appear that Liam Delap will leave the Premier League underdogs for pastures new come the end of the campaign, especially if the latter outcome of falling back into the EFL occurs.

Delap's future at Ipswich

Reports are even suggesting now that Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are very keen on landing the ex-Manchester City ace, with Caught Offside further elaborating that the transfer-heavy Blues are in ‘pole position’ to land the now £40m-rated striker.

Ipswich managed to land Delap for £20m less just last summer, which has proven to be a very smart move on the end of the Tractor Boys, with the relegation candidates perhaps deeper in their relegation anxiety if the lethal number 19 wasn’t around.

The above table makes for some damning reading when it comes to Ipswich’s over-reliance on their breakout “monster” – as new signing Alex Palmer labelled him after his opener versus Aston Villa – with Sammie Szmodics the relegation-threatened side’s second top scorer in league action with a meagre four strikes.

Therefore, if the underdogs are to stand any chance at staying up, they will need Delap to continue to be at his unbelievable best.

But, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom at Portman Road if the double whammy of relegation and Delap leaving happens, with stars such as one loan talent – who is outscoring every Tractor Boys player bar the 22-year-old this season – presumably given more senior chances subsequently.

The Ipswich star who's shining on loan

He could even be lucky enough to be gifted opportunities if McKenna’s side stay put in the top flight, based on his stunning showings down in League One.

Cameron Humphreys has already been given a fair few chances in the senior ranks by the Northern Irishman, with 17 league appearances coming his way during the 2022/23 season under the popular boss, but the Colchester-born midfielder’s loan stint to date away at promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers is doing him the world of good.

The promising 21-year-old hasn’t looked back since bagging this stylish solo strike on his Chairboys debut, with a further five league goals picked up from 29 third-tier contests boosting his loan side’s chances of automatic promotion glory.

He has, of course, been there and done that with Ipswich in the past when back-to-back promotions were on the menu, with now ex-Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield heralding Humphreys and the rest of his determined teammates as “brilliant” after that goal hit the back of the net against Rotherham United.

Humphreys will just aim to see out the season with Wycombe by continuing to pick up more and more goal contributions, before perhaps being given more opportunities back in Suffolk, with the Premier League side arguably light on options centrally considering both Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste are only in the building on loan.

Moreover, there is only really Conor Chaplin and Omari Hutchinson that can play in the number ten spot, with Humphreys – who new Chairboys boss Mike Dodds lauded as a “clever footballer” – keen to make a lasting impact back at his parent employers if everything goes to plan.

The Rondo: Assessing Lionel Messi's frustrations, Luis Suarez's apparent decline, sluggish starts by LA Galaxy, Atlanta United

GOAL writers analyze Luis Suarez's goal-scoring issues, Messi's apparent frustrations, and what's troubling Atlanta and Galaxy

Nearly three months into the MLS season, there are a few surprises. Inter Miami have been good at times, but fairly woeful at others. And as a result, manager Javier Mascherano has endured his fair share of criticism.

The Herons are a different team to the one that won the Supporters' Shield last year. There have been personnel changes, but also radical dips in form. Luis Suarez found the net for just the third time this season last weekend, while Lionel Messi has cut a frustrated figure of late, showing it on the pitch and with reactions to losses (cue the body language experts!)

But a big result against the Red Bulls showed it might not all be doom and gloom – especially if they can put a run together.

Elsewhere, the LA Galaxy continue to struggle immensely. A rough start was perhaps inevitable given that Riqui Puig is out for most of the season, but going winless in 11 is almost unfathomable. There are faint calls for a coaching change, and the detractors might just have a point this time.

Meanwhile, Atlanta United have sputtered, and are yet to find their mojo after spending more than $40 million to rebuild their squad this offseason. Is it just a slow start, or have the front office gotten it all wrong?

GOAL US writers discuss all of these MLS topics in the latest edition of… The Rondo.

GettyIs Messi's apparent frustration justified?

Tom Hindle: Don't you just love body language experts? It is entirely possible that we're reading way too much into everything here. Still, the man has won eight Ballons d'Or, a World Cup, and everything else a billion times. He's probably pretty angry that his team are struggling in MLS. Not usually a fan of superstars giving the "you guys all suck" vibes, but you can understand Leo's frustrations. Still, it's probably better to motivate than sulk.

Jacob Schneider: Absolutely, but that should be aimed at Javier Mascherano. Some of his personnel selections have been baffling. In his last two MLS starts, Benja Cremaschi has a goal and an assist. He came off the bench twice – against Vancouver, and against RBNY on Matchday 11. Playing him as a second striker alongside Suarez, or at the 10 with two other wingers opposite, is not where he needs to be. Play Messi on the right side of the pitch, play Cremaschi central, and then choose your LW. Stop trying to be cute and innovative.

Alex Labidou: This is par for the course for world-class players who have come into MLS. David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic – it's a rite of passage at this stage. Playing in MLS is unlike any other league in the world. You have players who could still start for Champions League clubs, making 20-times more than a teammate they start with who might be EFL League One quality. Then you have the travel aspect. It can be grueling, especially for star players who are the face of a franchise in a way they aren't expected to in other leagues. For example, no one blames Lamine Yamal for losing to Inter in the Champions League. Fans and media blame the tactics or the collective effort of the team. In MLS, when Inter Miami lose, the magnifying glass goes directly to Messi. All of that is to say, the frustration is understandable, but it is what he signed up for.

AdvertisementGettyIs Suarez's goal finally a sign of better things to come?

TH: You'd certainly hope so! Suarez was class last season, but has spent much of this looking like an old man with bad legs – while his form inside the box has been pretty miserable. Then again, the stats suggest he's doing everything right. His xG is higher than his actual goals scored, and he's still getting into the right spots. So, for all of his struggles in the final-third – he has just three goals – he is providing assists. Maybe this is just a funky new version of Suarez, who might assist 10-15, and only provide 10 goals. As long as everyone else finds the back of the net a bit, Miami will likely take that.

JS: He won't reach 20 goals in MLS as he did last year – but he'll come close to 12-15 by the end of the season. Where Suarez will be more efficient around net is with hold-up play and awareness in drawing defenders out of position, thus allowing other attackers to move into goal-scoring spots. His knees are tired, and he can't move like he did before – but he still has a role to play. "Better things" is subjective. Don't think he will be more efficient in terms of scoring, but he'll continue contributing and building on the six assists he has.

AL: Going to put this as simple as possible: Class might be permanent, but Father Time is undefeated. The reality is Suarez's technical ability is still world-class and still among the elite of MLS. But his athleticism, whatever was left of it, left last season. He simply can't beat defenders anymore, no matter how nice the dribble or skill he tries to use to do so. He'll still finish chances like he did against the Red Bulls, a chance that was very much force-fed into a finish. His quality also means he likely can find teammates with intelligent passes, which explains his assist tally this season. But he shouldn't be counted on to be a goal-scorer at a high level consistently game after game. One could make an argument that on an elite MLS team, he would be better suited as a backup who can be counted on for 20 strong minutes. Inter Miami should strongly consider doing the same.

Getty Images SportDo the LA Galaxy need a coaching change after a winless start?

TH: No. The results have been disastrous, but the performances haven't necessarily been terrible. They were a team that really relied on a star, and then lost a collection of very good footballers around him. At some point, it's fair to question the coach, but it's still a bit early in the season to be talking seriously about moving on from him. Also, who else can they get who can make this team better? If there were an obvious, REALISTIC(!!!)hire out there, then, sure, consider it. Harsh truth: there isn't.

JS: Absolutely. It's crazy to say out loud, but it's absolutely something that should be considered. Losing Riqui Puig is a massive blow, we all know that – but ZERO wins in 11 matches, including a game in which the opposition won by not taking a SINGLE shot on goal (shout-out own-goal)? It's just absurd.

AL: Don't want to pile on managers today, and Vanney has shown – with the right pieces – that he can win titles. It's a trait that isn't recognized enough, being able to win in the biggest games. Yet, if there is an area in which Vanney has been challenged, it's being able to handle significant changes. In 2018, the year after Toronto FC won its historic treble, Toronto FC struggled mightly – finishing ninth in the East. It appears as if the same thing is going on now, though Vanney has fewer excuses. In Toronto, he had a core that was coming to the end with stars such as Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore past their peak. In LAFC, he has a largely young core with Gabriel Pec and Joseph Pantsil leading the way. Yes, losing Puig was a significant blow, and sure, trading Dejan Joveljic was a tough decision. But three points in 11 matches is bad. There's no way around it. If things don't turn around by the summer, expect wholesale changes, including the manager. The Galaxy can't afford to fall into irrelevance again, especially in just one season.

Getty Images SportWhat is going on with Atlanta United?

TH: It seems like there's been loads of change with a manager who still can't quite figure out how to piece it all together. They are victims of their own expectations here. They spent exorbitantly last summer, brought in a new coach, and promised big things. The issue is, this is still a team that scraped into the playoffs and spent most of 2024 being not very good at soccer – other than the upset of Inter Miami in the playoffs. There's enough talent for them to turn things around, but they still need time to piece things together. Patience.

JS: It's a really baffling development, right? It doesn't make a ton of sense that Atlanta have spent more than $40M on three Designated Players since August 2024, but not bolstered their defense or added a ball-winning midfielder to match the caliber of their attack. They focused SO much on their attack, they forgot to consider other areas of development – and they've fallen behind as a result. Ronny Deila hasn't done well on the touchline, but the transfer business from the club over the offseason isn't a winner by any means.

AL: Not entirely convinced Deila is a strong manager. Yes, he won the MLS Cup with NYCFC, but other than 2021 – when he won – it always seemed as if The Pigeons were underachievers despite their talent. The year they won, it was a flash-in-the-pan moment for the franchise. And there's a reason why things didn't work for him at both Club Brugge and Al Wahda prior to his return to MLS. Did Atlanta get it wrong to overlook Rob Valentino, who had done a good job with the team in his interim spell with the Five Stripes? This team is too talented to have won just over 18 percent of its games since Deila's arrival.

Champions Liverpool have five players in our all-star selection after romping to the title – but who else has earned inclusion?

The end of the Premier League season is upon us, with the final round of games set to be played on Sunday. There are, of course, still precious Champions League places up for grabs, but Liverpool have long since been confirmed as champions after surging away from the chasing pack over the winter break and never really looking back.

It won't come as a surprise, then, to learn that the Reds have more representatives in GOAL's Premier League Team of the Season than any other club (five) – or that not a single Manchester City player has made the cut after a dreadful title defence from Pep Guardiola's men.

However, there is well-deserved recognition for players from some of the 2024-25 campaign's surprise packages, including Fulham, Brentford and Nottingham Forest…

AFPGK: Matz Sels

The big Belgian's first spell in England with Newcastle didn't go well at all, with Sels sold after just one season in the Championship, but he's been brilliant for Nottingham Forest since arriving at the City Ground last year.

Indeed, Nuno Espirito Santos' side wouldn't have even got close to a top-five finish had it not been for the 33-year-old. No goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets in this season's Premier League (13), while Sels also boasts a very impressive 72.39 save percentage.

It's a shame that Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool career is ending in such acrimony, given he was so integral to their success under Jurgen Klopp – and this season's title triumph under Arne Slot.

The right-back with the David Beckham-esque range of passing weighed in with six assists, while he also scored three goals himself, including the vital winner against Leicester City at the tail end of April.

What little hope Arsenal had left of catching Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table arguably died the moment Gabriel picked up a season-ending injury at the start of April.

The Gunners struggled badly to keep clean sheets without their brilliant Brazilian centre-back, who once again showed that he's not just a fearsome man-marker, but also a serious threat at set-pieces.

If this season has proven nothing else, it's that Virgil van Dijk remains the most dominant defender in the Premier League.

Liverpool's inspirational and imposing captain continues to cope so comfortably with world-class forwards such as Erling Haaland that it beggars belief, while he's still a colossus in the air, as he so memorably proved with his crucial late winner against West Ham.
