Newcastle dealt Allan Saint-Maximin blow

A worrying update has emerged on Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of the club’s clash with Brentford.

What’s the latest?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has stated that they will make a “late call” on the forward and that the knock will not keep him out for a significant period of time.

Alistair Magowan quoted him as saying: “He’s been away getting intensive treatment. He said when he suffered the injury, it wouldn’t be long term. So we will keep our fingers crossed on him.”

This comes after he was absent for the 1-1 draw with West Ham, having picked up a blow against Aston Villa in the previous outing.

Newcastle will be gutted

Newcastle fans will surely be gutted by this news as Saint-Maximin being ruled out of this match would be a big blow to the side.

Only Callum Wilson (six) has scored more goals for the Magpies than the Frenchman (five) this season and the ex-Bournemouth striker is currently sidelined through injury. The club’s next top scorer is Jonjo Shelvey with just two Premier League strikes and this suggests that losing Saint-Maximin would be a major blow to the side’s chances of scoring.

Not only is he a goal threat himself but he is also the chief creator. His tally of three assists in the top-flight is more than any other player in the squad has managed and his 4.6 dribbles per game place him 3.2 clear of any other in the team, highlighting how impressive he has been in comparison to his teammates.

This shows that Howe would be missing out on a player with a huge attacking threat and someone who can counter quickly with the ball at his feet. Saint-Maximin’s exciting ability to take the ball past defenders on the dribble opens up so much space for himself and others and they would sorely miss that if he is unable to play today.

Therefore, the news that it will be a “late call” over his fitness is worrying for the supporters as it suggests that he could miss out on the XI and his talent in the final third will not be on show against Thomas Frank’s side. They may also be concerned that he could end up playing through pain and causing more damage, although Howe will surely not want to risk losing him for an extended period of time.

Newcastle: Jonathan David claim emerges

A big Newcastle United transfer claim has been made regarding 22-year-old striker Jonathan David…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has stated that the Lille forward is more likely to be on the club’s list than players such as Harry Kane and Thomas Muller, of Tottenham and Bayern Munich respectively.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Jonathan David’s probably a bit more realistic, but they’re going to be linked with again, 15, 20 strikers between now and the end of the season.

“Obviously, they need to stay up first, and then we’ll be able to gauge exactly where they’ll be shopping.”

A report over the winter claimed he’d cost around €55m (£46m).

Exciting

Eddie Howe will surely be excited by this claim as David would be an excellent signing for his team in the summer window.

The Canada international has been impressive in France and would bolster the ex-Bournemouth boss’ options in the final third.

He was previously dubbed a “phenomenon” by former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck and his statistics back up that tag. The attacker has scored 13 goals in 23 Ligue 1 outings this season, whilst also scoring three times in seven Champions League matches.

This comes after he found the back of the net 13 times in 37 games for Lille in the league throughout the 2020/21 campaign on their way to the title ahead of PSG. He has burst onto the scene over the past 18 months or so and these statistics show that he can score goals on a regular basis at the top level.

At the age of 22, he also has the scope to improve further as a player. He has the potential to grow and develop parts of his game and this means that he is someone who could be an excellent signing in the short and long-term for the Magpies.

Howe can, therefore, work with him on the training pitch to help him fulfil his potential. He would surely love watching David flourish over the course of a number of seasons, whilst enjoying his performances on the pitch in the immediate future.

This is another reason why the head coach will be excited by the prospect of the Canadian arriving at St. James’ Park in the summer. The £45m-rated gem is a player who has proven his quality already and has room to progress, which is why PIF must now work to get a deal over the line for him to bolster Howe’s squad heading into the 2022/23 campaign.

Villa: Cash stole the show v Southampton

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side secured a very comfortable win this afternoon, finally ending Southampton’s unbeaten run in the Premier League with a 4-0 thrashing in a fantastic attacking performance from the Villans.

Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Douglas Luiz and Philippe Coutinho all found the net over the 90 minutes against the Saints as Villa made the most of the opportunities given to them, despite only having 38% possession and making almost 200 fewer passes than the visitors throughout the game.

After Watkins opened the scoring in the ninth minute, the Villa players swarmed their opponents, causing their defence and goalkeeper all sorts of problems, with nine shots on target overall. Fraser Forster was kept busy, conceding a second goals in the last moments of the first half and then letting in two more in quick succession in the early second half exchanges.

One other player who was integral to Villa’s success was Matty Cash, who made a huge impact despite not getting on the scoresheet himself.

According to SofaScore, Cash earned the second highest rating in Gerrard’s side (7.9), and it’s no surprise when you look at his statistics throughout the match. He was successful in 100% of his duels, winning six out of six, and also made three tackles, three clearances and one interception, with two key passes and the assist for the fourth goal.

It’s safe to say that the right-back – who was hailed as “exceptional” by Trevor Sinclair – was an absolute nightmare for his opponents not only in his defensive role, but by going the extra mile with the attacking threat Villa imposed on Southampton today.

Gerrard will be hoping that his side can continue their run of good form after picking up their second consecutive Premier League win, especially going into the last few months of the season.

The Villans are now level on 33 points with Crystal Palace in 10th and will surely be going into their clash against Leeds on Thursday with the intentions of breaking into the top half of the table. You can fully expect to see Cash starting once more after he stole the show with his marvellous performance today.

Wolves: Neves dazzled in Watford victory

Wolves had no issue putting their disappointing run of form in the Premier League behind them after comfortably beating relegation battlers Watford 4-0 at Molineux on Thursday night.

Raul Jimenez opened the scoring for the Old Gold after 13 minutes before two goals in the space of five minutes put the hosts 3-0 up with just 21 minutes on the clock.

As the final whistle was approaching, Neves added even more misery on Roy Hodgson’s side by getting his name on the scoresheet with a beautiful chipped goal to wrap up what was a very pleasing night for the home supporters.

While Jimenez may have scored his sixth league goal of the season, and his first since their 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month, it was the Portuguese midfielder who stole the show for Bruno Lage’s team last night.

With 110 touches of the ball, Neves – who has been praised in the past by Tim Spiers for his “sensational” eye for goal – racked up an impressive pass accuracy percentage of 96%, with 94 passes completed out of 98 attempted. He also completed 19 accurate long balls, one cross and one key pass, as per SofaScore.

Despite the hefty scoreline, Wolves only had one more shot at goal than the Hornets (9) throughout the game, but thankfully their Portuguese midfield maestro did his bit to help the Old Gold keep another clean sheet. with three tackles and one interception made, also winning five out of his eight duels.

This display ultimately earned the 24-year-old an impressive overall match rating of 8.4/10, making him the highest-rated player on the pitch last night according to SofaScore.

Birmingham Live also picked up on Neves’ solid performance by labelling him as the “best player on the pitch,” along with being “absolutely everywhere in midfield” and “a million miles too good for his Watford counterparts”.

Taking all this into account, it’s safe to say that the £36m-rated star stole the show on this occasion and played a massive part in his team’s victory.

Evans gleeful over Watkins’ England call-up

Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has voiced his delight for Ollie Watkins following the striker’s late call-up to the England squad.

The lowdown

The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed on Monday that Gareth Southgate had added Watkins to his squad for the Three Lions’ March fixtures against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast in a pair of friendlies at Wembley over the coming days.

With only two more international windows left after this one before Southgate picks his squad for the World Cup in Qatar, this development bodes well for the 26-year-old, who was notified about his call-up following the 1-0 defeat against Arsenal on Saturday and is poised to join up with his England team-mates today.

Watkins has earned five caps for his country up to this point, the last of which came in October against Hungary.

The latest

The Athletic’s Villa correspondent Evans reacted to Ornstein’s update on Monday morning, sharing a link to the latter’s article from that publication.

Evans wrote on Twitter: “Great news for Ollie Watkins” in relation to the Villa striker’s call-up to the latest England squad.

The verdict

Watkins may be somewhat disappointed with his goal return so far this season. He has only netted seven times in 26 Premier League appearances, leaving him on course to finish up on around 10 goals.

That would be considerably lower than his tally of 14 in his debut top-flight season in 2020/21, whereas he would surely have been expecting to take a step forward this term.

Nonetheless, there are only two English centre-forwards – Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy – who have scored more non-penalty goals than Watkins in the top flight this season, and the latter has retired from international football.

On that basis, you could argue that the £31.5m-rated Villa frontman is still worthy of selection for England.

Wolves missed out on Zambo-Anguissa in 2018

Wolves’ midfield could look completely different next season, with both Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho possibly leaving the club at the end of the season.

Youngster Luke Cundle is expected to feature more for the first team next season after impressing in the limited appearances he has made so far, while fans will be hoping Morgan Gibbs-White is given a chance next campaign after impressing on-loan at Sheffield United in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Leander Dendoncker could be the club’s most senior midfielder – having been a regular at the club since 2018, when he initially joined on-loan from Anderlecht, before signing permanently for £12.42m the summer afterwards.

However, Bruno Lage might be nervous about deploying the Belgian in place of Ruben Neves, given he has averaged just a 6.79 match rating this season, compared to the 7.20 match rating that the Portuguese star has averaged in the Premier League this season.

If the West Midlands club went down an alternate route back in 2018, they could have had Cameroon international Andre-Franck Zambo-Anguissa already in place to step up and replace Neves – and have had him to start alongside the Barcelona target.

According to French news outlet Espoirs du Foot, via Get French Football News, Wolves were interested in bringing  Zambo-Anguissa to Molineux for their first season back in the Premier League, back in 2018. However, he joined Fulham instead for £22.3m.

The Cottagers star, currently on-loan with Serie A giants Napoli, was labelled “first-class” by former manager Scott Parker during the club’s Premier League campaign back in the 2018/19 season, and he has gone from strength-to-strength in Italy – with his value increasing to £27m according to Transfermarkt.

His manager in Italy, Luciano Spalletti, has admitted he is a huge fan of the former Stade Reims and Marseille youngster, saying earlier in the season: “He always comes into the locker room and talks about what happened in the first half, what was going on around his position, paying close attention to the movements that the opposition do. He is very tactically intelligent.”

The 26-year-old has proven himself as not just a physical brute in the defensive third to get past, but also a progressive midfielder like Neves, ranking among players in his position across Europe’s top five leagues and continental competitions in the top 3% for both dribbles completed per 90 (1.77) and tackles in the attacking third per 90 (0.56), as well as ranking in the top 8% for carries into the final third per 90 (2.42).

Described as a “machine” by Joachim Andersen, his development since first arriving in England four years ago has been significant, having spent time on loan at La Liga giants Villarreal too – and he is now proving Wolves wrong for not taking a chance on him.

Chairman Jeff Shi will likely rue that decision in the summer if they do lose Moutinho and Neves.

Leeds keen on Ben Brereton-Diaz

Leeds United are keen on a move for Blackburn Rovers forward Ben Brereton-Diaz, Sky Sports report.

The Lowdown: Brereton-Diaz’s 2021/22

Brereton-Diaz, who can play anywhere across the frontline, has enjoyed a prolific campaign in front of goal in the Championship.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The 22-year-old has scored 20 times in 30 second-tier appearances but has missed the last seven games with ankle ligament damage.

The Chile international has turned out as a left-winger and as a centre-forward under Tony Mowbray, who has dubbed the versatile forward as a ‘wonderful talent’.

The Latest: Leeds interest

Sky Sports shared a story on Tuesday evening, looking at 50 players who could be on the move over the coming months.

When it came to Brereton-Diaz, Leeds were the only side name-checked with an interest. His Ewood Park contract expires in the summer, although Blackburn have an option to extend that by a further 12 months, and could then decide to cash in over the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-40/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Makes sense?

Leeds are short of central attacking options at this moment in time, especially with star striker Patrick Bamford missing the majority of the season through injury.

Therefore, making a move for Brereton-Diaz, who can also play on the wing when required, could be a shrewd call.

He is also represented by Wasserman, the same agency as Crysencio Summerville, Adam Forshaw, Sam Greenwood, Charlie Cresswell, Jack Jenkins and Mateo Fernandez, so that could make a transfer easier when it comes to discussions.

Of course, the Whites will need to agree on a fee with Blackburn if they trigger that 12-month extension, but this could be one to keep a close eye on.

Celtic backed to sign Christopher Scott

The lure of guaranteed playing time is expected to see Celtic win the race to sign Bayern Munich youngster Christopher Scott this summer, according to Alex McLeish.

The Lowdown: Celtic linked with move

The 19-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to Parkhead in recent days, with Sky Germany reporting talks with the player’s representatives even though Bayern are keen on extending his stay beyond 2022 – when his current deal expires.

It is believed that Brentford are also interested in acquiring Scott’s services, as the potential battle to sign him in the summer hots up.

The youngster has won four caps for Germany’s Under-20 side and is valued at £1.08million by Transfermarkt.

The Latest: McCleish backs Hoops for signing

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish, a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, backed Scott, a ‘glorious talent’ to trade Bayern for Celtic, with the promise of more minutes giving them the edge over Brentford:

“That would be a cracker. I suspect he will only come if he is promised he will be playing. I’m not saying he’ll be in the nucleus of the team.

“But he will need to be assured he will be getting games. It’s rare to see young teenagers making a breakthrough but teenagers in their late teens have a chance.

“If you’ve got a glorious talent, there’s absolutely no stopping you. But it seems that a lot of them are thinking about, not bigger clubs but the bigger leagues, to get them over that kind of foundation hurdle.

“The aim is to catch the eye of the seniors at Bayern Munich or whatever. They clearly want to get the experience of a tougher league.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One for the future

While Scott wouldn’t necessarily come in as a key man immediately, he is someone who would be viewed as a long-term signing with great potential.

That’s not to say he wouldn’t play regularly, though, as McLeish alludes to, and he has been described as ‘one of the biggest talents in Germany’ in the past, surely earning himself plenty of playing time when the Bhoys compete on multiple fronts.

Semenyo alternative: “Incredible” £50k-p/w star now a serious target for Tottenham

An “incredible” Premier League forward is now an attainable target for Tottenham Hotspur in 2026, following a new update on their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo.

Spurs set to miss out on Semenyo

It now appears as though Tottenham are set to miss out on the signing of AFC Bournemouth star Semenyo, despite being willing to offer him a big contract, with the forward more keen to join rival Premier League clubs.

As such, Spurs have subsequently started to scour the market for other new attackers, and they are exploring a move for Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush, who scored in Egypt’s 2-1 victory against Zimbabwe at AFCON on Monday evening.

Marmoush is not the only Man City forward of interest to the north Londoners, however, with transfer insider Dean Jones telling TEAMtalk that Savinho is an attainable target for the Lilywhites in 2026, despite missing out in the summer transfer window.

City blocked the Brazilian’s departure at that point, as they didn’t believe they would be able to bring in a top replacement, but a move could be possible next year, and he is a more viable target for Thomas Frank than Semenyo, Maghnes Akliouche and Yan Diomande.

Speaking about Tottenham’s transfer plans, Jones added: “I like the fact that Spurs want to raise the ceiling of what is possible but obviously they are not helped by the fact this season has not started well,

“They want new attacking edge but they know they also need a back-up list of options. Savinho is one player who is part of that.”

"Incredible" Savinho may need to leave Man City

Despite being lauded as “incredible” by Pep Guardiola, the 21-year-old has found game time hard to come by in the Premier League this season, predominantly being used as a substitute, with Jeremy Doku getting the nod at left-wing.

However, the £50k-a-week winger has impressed when given the opportunity, recently grabbing an assist in a five-minute cameo against Crystal Palace, while also scoring and making several key contributions in a 2-0 EFL Cup triumph against Brentford.

With Man City also in the race for Semenyo, however, the 13-time Brazil international is at risk of falling down the pecking order even further, so he may need to leave his current club, in order to avoid his development being hampered.

Tottenham officials sent to club as Spurs eye Hazard-like 'magician' after Semenyo snub

Spurs are craving a new left-winger.

ByEmilio Galantini

Savinho, who provided ten Premier League assists last season, could be an exciting long-term addition to Tottenham’s squad, so it is promising news that a deal could be possible next year.

Should he simply avoid Tottenham and Levy all together?

After seven years away from title glory, Frank de Boer has returned Ajax to the top of the mountain and maintained a level of success that has been hard to match anywhere in Europe. A 2-2 draw two weeks ago against Heracles helped to secure the Amsterdam side their fourth Eredivisie title in four years.

De Boer’s has been diligent since arriving at Ajax in December 2010. He’s taken in youth games, he’s promoted from within and helped to strengthen that aura which surrounds the club’s famed youth academy.

De Boer has also had time and comfort. We can adjudge that the success of the club over the past four seasons has been because the manager has had the freedom to work, the resources to succeed and the right personnel alongside him who understood what was required from the club and how to work to its ethos.

The fact that Ajax have spent so little in first re-acquiring the Dutch league title and then going on to retain it three times means de Boer is a favourite for clubs who work to lesser budgets and who want to maximise the output of what they already have.

The admiration for the Dutchman is widespread in England. Tottenham aren’t the only club to sound out de Boer for a future managerial role. Liverpool enquired after him before turning to Brendan Rodgers, and Manchester United kicked the tires on the possibility of landing de Boer not too long ago before turning their attention elsewhere.

De Boer, however, must understand that the life he knows at Ajax is vastly different from what managers have experienced in the past at Tottenham.

Under Daniel Levy, the shelf life of a manager is short. He’s moved on coaches who have a history of success with clubs in cup competitions (Juande Ramos), and he’s booted the polar opposite in managerial style, yet one who still gave Tottenham what they’d long sought to achieve (Harry Redknapp).

After each managerial sacking at Tottenham, we’ve gone over the mistakes that led to the final action of dismissal; for Andre Villas-Boas, there were plenty. Yet we’ve hardly ever gone over the problems and mistakes that exist in the boardroom.

Let’s call a spade a space: Tottenham aren’t a club who have a modern identity in the way Ajax do. They’re not trying to uphold one set of values. They’ve bought good to great players over the years – Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale – but they’ve been a stepping stone for each of them. Each time the club land on something good that could help to shape their future, whether it’s Villas-Boas or Redknapp, Levy is quick off the draw following any kind of setback.

Levy is a chairman who doesn’t really know what he wants – at least that’s what we can infer from his erratic behaviour on the managerial front.

Will de Boer be comfortable with life at Spurs, will he be given the freedom to carry out his work? Probably not. Franco Baldini is still floating about, and his isn’t a position which requires little to no work. Tottenham have been one of the clubs in the Premier League to embrace the idea of a director of football. Whether they’ve done it the right way is another matter.

We shouldn’t assume that de Boer will be a success wherever he goes. Tottenham, above all, shouldn’t assume he will either. The Dutchman has the right people in place who have helped him get Ajax where they are now. They’re on the same page, just as Ramos and Sevilla’s Director of Football Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo (Monchi) were.

What kind of relationship can de Boer expect with Baldini at Spurs? Probably a confusing one, if we’re going by what we saw during the first few months of this season with Villas-Boas in the dugout. The trio, Levy included, looked to be on the same page during the summer, seemingly spending the Gareth Bale money wisely. What we saw in on the pitch was a group of players who didn’t fit into the manager’s tactical setup. He couldn’t bring out the best in Roberto Soldado; when was the last time someone saw record signing Erik Lamela?

These uncertainties and inconsistencies eventually help to spell the end for managers, regardless of where they came from and what their history of success is.

De Boer has stability at Ajax. He’s alluded many times in the past to unfinished business with the club. It should be remembered that this is one of Europe’s great clubs, a four-time winner of the European Cup. They may be dominating domestically, but they’re surely not happy to settle for their Champions League campaigns ending in December.

Tottenham may offer de Boer more in the way of resources to build a stronger team; the club would also offer the Ajax coach the excitement of something different, and no one is of the opinion that he’ll stay in Amsterdam for the rest of his career.

But is the structure at Tottenham right? Its history doesn’t provide confidence. Daniel Levy may not be the right man to offer de Boer the time he needs to be a success.
