Leeds Handed Injury Boost With £35k-p/w "Beast"

Leeds United fans will have been disappointed to see key player Max Wober substituted due to an injury problem during the international break.

However, an update has now emerged on the Austrian defender, and it seems as if he should only be out of action for a short while and will be back to aid Javi Gracia's side in their fight against relegation.

What is the latest Leeds injury news?

According to The Athletic, the centre-back is a doubt for this weekend's game against Arsenal but Leeds are confident that he will be fit for the Premier League run-in.

The Yorkshire outfit have completed an assessment on the former RB Salzburg man, who pulled up with an apparent hamstring problem in Austria's European qualifier against Azerbaijan and seem confident that the injury is a minor one.

Considering Leeds' struggles defensively so far this campaign, which have seen them ship the fifth-most goals in the division with 44, it can only be good news for Gracia that Wober is set to be out for just a short period.

Since joining from Salzburg in the January transfer window in a deal worth £11m, the 24-year-old has established himself as a regular in the Whites' defence.

The versatile defender has averaged an impressive 6.77 rating from WhoScored across his ten appearances in the top flight, which ranks him as the fourth-best performer at Elland Road so far this season, emphasising the impact he has had since his arrival in the winter transfer window.

The Austria international also ranks second for interceptions, second for clearances and first for blocks in Gracia's squad which again proves how quickly he has established himself as a key man at Elland Road.

His impressive form since Gracia's arrival has helped the Whites take seven points from a possible 12, lifting them to 14th in the Premier League table, which has given them a real chance of avoiding relegation when things looked desperate only a few weeks ago.

Wober, who is paid £35k per week at Leeds, earned a lot of praise from Leeds Live writer Beren Cross ahead of his arrival at Elland Road and he has certainly lived up to that praise thus far.

Cross said: "A leader, a beast one vs one, strong in the air, digs out lazy teammates, limited pace, but a national boss in Rangnick playing him at left-back too."

If his injury does prove to be a minor one, and he can continue his strong start to life at Leeds upon his return to action, then the Yorkshire outfit have a real chance of avoiding relegation this season.

Tottenham Hotspur Had A Nightmare On 18x Trophy-Winning "Legend"

Tottenham Hotspur have overseen a host of talent come and go, often proceeding on to achieve things far greater than they ever could have had they stayed.

The club's lack of silverware has become not just a point of ridicule but also a very valid reason for players to seek an exit or avoid a move into their misery. The quality has seldom been lacking, especially in the last decade, but their mentality leaves them unprepared to challenge for the major honours that their roster often merits.

Meanwhile, all their rivals have added to their transfer cabinet tenfold, particularly the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool.

The former had been notorious for acquiring the Premier League's top players from rivals due to their stature alone, as once upon a time the Red Devils were arguably the most attractive proposition in the world for players.

Whilst that reputation has also taken a hit in recent years, it did not stop them from taking the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Carrick from north London into their trophy-laden ways.

michael-carrick-tottenham-hotspur-transfer

Whilst the Bulgarian forward was a true show-stopper, with his technical quality unparalleled, the latter of these two transfers helped to shape Sir Alex Ferguson's ultra-successful philosophy into the dynasty it remains.

Of all those who have left the Lilywhites, few have enjoyed more trophy successes than the Wallsend-born maestro.

How much did Spurs sell Michael Carrick for?

In the summer of 2006, it was reported that the Manchester outfit had taken a keen interest in a 25-year-old midfielder who had impressed at White Hart Lane.

They would finalise such a deal in late July, parting with just £18.6m for his services. This fee would prove to be an incredible bargain, as the now-Middlesbrough manager would play 464 times before retiring at the club as the "legend" that Bruno Fernandes dubbed him.

His time in the north saw him also grow a fine trophy cabinet, eclipsing anything that his former employers have garnered since the turn of the century.

Carrick would go on to win a mouth-watering 18 trophies, including five Premier Leagues and a Champions League. Daniel Levy could only dream of such a return for his club.

This illustrious career also brought him 34 caps for England too, although he perhaps suffered due to the emergence of some of the country's greatest ever within his position. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes all understandably took precedence.

Whilst Spurs have suffered from numerous transfer nightmares, few have proved as catastrophic as this one. The success of this dependable midfield metronome since leaving only serves to exacerbate how left behind the club have become with regard to challenging for major honours.

Celtic Could Find Abada Heir in £790-p/w Teen

A major talking point at Celtic in recent times has been the uncertainty surrounding Liel Abada's future at Parkhead, with the Israel international seemingly in line for an exit from the club at the end of the season.

According to Football Insider, there has reportedly been a falling out between the 21-year-old and manager Ange Postecoglou amid significant Premier League interest in the winger, with a summer departure said to be a real possibility.

As per the same source, the Scottish champions are said to be ready to accept around £7m-£10m if they are to cash in on the youngster in the upcoming transfer window, with the former Maccabi Petah Tikva ace having been signed for around £3.5m back in 2021.

Losing the £15k-per-week man – who has been sidelined with injury in recent games – would no doubt be something of a blow, with Abada having scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions this season.

As such, any potential exit may require Postecoglou to find a replacement or successor to the 5 foot 6 ace ahead of next season, with the Greek-Aussie seemingly already having a dream candidate for the role in the form of 18-year-old, Ben Quinn.

Who is Ben Quinn?

While the teenager is yet to feature for the Old Firm outfit at first-team level, he is clearly a player who the club have high hopes for, having only just been handed a new contract extension at the club until 2025.

As the club's official website stated, that new deal was a just reward for the Irishman's 'breakout season' for the club's 'B' team, with Quinn having had a 'big role' under Stephen McManus and Darren O'Dea of late.

Much like Abada, the Republic of Ireland youth international appears to be at his brilliant best when operating on the right flank, notably being hailed as "very impressive" by journalist Sean Markus Clifford after scoring twice in the win over Bo'ness United back in November.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou

That deadly double from the exciting youngster came amid a campaign that has seen the youth starlet score 12 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions – an identical record to that of Abada in the first-team.

Of course, it would take a big step up for the £790-per-week sensation to go on to flourish in Postecoglou's side, although his standout form this season should certainly have the 57-year-old keeping a close eye on his progress.

The hope will be that Quinn – who only recently bagged a brace against bitter rivals Rangers in the Lowland League – can go on to prove something of an heir to Abada if the latter man is to move on any time soon, having proven himself a devastating threat from the flanks in the youth set-up.

"Terrible" Leeds Player Expected To Start Vs Fulham

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is expected to keep his place in the side against Fulham this lunchtime, Adam Pope reports.

What’s the latest Leeds team news?

The Whites travel to Craven Cottage looking to bounce back after heavy home defeats to Crystal Palace and Liverpool. As a result, Javi Gracia’s side begin the weekend just two points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Defender Max Wober could be in line for a return to the starting XI today with Gracia saying he is in a better condition than last week, however, there are still question marks over Patrick Bamford’s availability.

One player who looks set to start though is Meslier, with Pope expecting him to carry on his record of starting every top-flight game this season after hearing Gracia defend him at his weekly pre-match press conference.

Illan Meslier watches on as Crystal Palace run riot against Leeds United in the Premier League.

Keep Meslier or start Robles or Klaesson?

Meslier, who recently conceded 11 consecutive shots on goal, has come in for criticism this year, with Glenn Murray labelling the shot-stopper as “terrible” after a mistake against Everton back in February. Jamie Carragher also took aim at the Frenchman after the 6-1 defeat to Liverpool on Monday, saying:

“They’ve got really poor defenders, really poor. I’ve never been convinced with the goalkeeper, I haven’t. I know he’s a young player and obviously [Marcelo] Bielsa brought him up from the Championship. He was young then, maybe 20, he was good on the ball using his feet.

“But he’s got no presence. It looks like you’ve got a kid in goal. I’ve always felt that but I thought, ‘Okay, he’s a young goalkeeper learning his way’. But I’ve never been convinced with him at all.”

Gracia’s other options should he wish to change things up are Joel Robles, who has made just two cup appearances for the Whites, and Kristoffer Klaesson, who has just one senior appearance in Yorkshire.

Therefore, sticking by Meslier, who was being linked with a big-money move to Chelsea not long ago, seems to be a wise move.

The 23-year-old has shown his shot-stopping qualities in the past and currently ranks 38th in the all-time Premier League saves list with 369. Hopefully, the Frenchman will have Wober in front of him this afternoon, with the January signing seemingly a big miss in recent weeks with the Whites conceding 16 times in four league games following the international break without the Austrian.

Ruben Amorim Won’t Become New Chelsea Manager

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim won't become Chelsea's next permanent manager, according to an update from reliable journalist David Ornstein.

Who will become next Chelsea boss?

It is a busy period at Stamford Bridge currently, with those high up at the club looking for the Blues next boss come the end of the season. Frank Lampard is currently in temporary charge until the campaign reaches its conclusion, but it is highly unlikely that his services will be retained beyond that point, especially having lost his first three matches in charge.

Instead, Chelsea will look to bring in a proven manager at the top level – someone who can come in and guide the Blues in a positive direction over a sustained length of time, which is something that both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter failed to do.

Various individuals have been linked with taking over from Lampard this summer, including Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino and Luis Enrique, but another name who has also been thrown into the hat is Amorim, who continues to shine at Sporting. He has won four trophies during his time there, including one Primeira Liga title, and at 38, is seen as one of the best young coaches in the game.

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim

Is Amorim out of the running?

According to The Athletic's Ornstein, however, Amorim won't be Chelsea's next boss, instead preferring to stay put at his current club:

"One possibility not expected to figure in the final reckoning is Ruben Amorim. Exploratory talks did take place – Chelsea hold Sporting Lisbon and their manager in high regard – but he is happy at the Portuguese club and the Premier League side are focusing their attention elsewhere.

"Chelsea also spoke with Amorim when Tuchel left, underlining their long-term admiration for the 38-year-old as he continues to develop his career and build a strong reputation across the game."

While Amorim may have been an inspired appointment, this news shouldn't be seen as a massive blow for Chelsea, considering the calibre of the other candidates, such as Nagelsmann and Enrique.

Bringing him in would arguably have a little too much like Potter again, in terms of being a young manager who may not necessarily be experienced enough to handle big characters at Stamford Bridge yet, as well as not having many years under his belt in the dugout.

At this point, Chelsea would arguably be wiser to bring in a more established head – Nagelsmann is younger than Amorim, but he does at least have experience of managing a club of Bayern Munich's stature – who can steady the ship and get the best out of a talented squad.

Spurs Must Unleash £14.5m Gem vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur are currently gearing up for what could potentially be a crucial encounter in their bid for Champions League qualification, with the Lilywhites set to take on top-four rivals Newcastle United later today.

That mouthwatering meeting at St James' Park comes with just three points separating the north London outfit from the Magpies in the third, albeit with the hosts also having the advantage of a game in hand.

While a defeat would not end Tottenham's hopes of finishing in those coveted and lucrative positions, it would certainly be a real setback for Cristian Stellini and co if they were to walk away from Tyneside empty-handed.

Ahead of this afternoon's crunch clash, the interim Italian may have a handful of selection decisions to make following the defeat at home to relegation strugglers Bournemouth last time out, with Spurs unable to afford a repeat showing this time around.

One man who could make way following that last-gasp loss to the Cherries is academy graduate, Oliver Skipp, with the 22-year-old having been 'outmuscled' in the midfield battle last weekend, as per 90min's Sean Walsh.

The young Englishman was rather ineffective in his 77-minute outing as he made just 36 touches and won just two of his seven total duels, with it perhaps time that Stellini hands a rare opportunity to Pape Matar Sarr in his place.

Will Sarr start against Newcastle?

The Senegalese international has endured a frustrating time of it at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to date, having been restricted to just 11 first-team appearances across all fronts so far this season.

Having been signed from Ligue 1 side Metz on a £14.5m deal in 2021 – before returning to France on loan for the following campaign – the 20-year-old has largely been on the periphery since coming back to his parent club in the summer.

When the youngster has featured, however, he has clearly caught the eye having been hailed as a player who "can do everything" by Stellini earlier in the campaign, while also being praised as a "top player" by former boss, Antonio Conte.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr

The 6 foot 1 gem was particularly impressive during the Champions League defeat to AC Milan back in February, having produced a 'standout display' in that 1-0, first-leg loss, as per the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick, due to his 'composure and crisp passes'.

Even despite the loss of Rodrigo Bentancur to a season-ending injury, however, Sarr has still been unable to dislodge the starting pair of Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with both Stellini and Conte showing a real reluctance to rotate in the centre of the park.

While it would be a bold move to thrust the 14-cap starlet back into the fold for such a high-profile fixture, the midfield maestro's previous display at San Siro should showcase that he would not be overawed by the big occasion.

Chelsea £88m Ace Can Be Reborn Under Pochettino

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk could find a new lease of life under expected new Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Mykhailo Mudryk and Mauricio Pochettino?

90min report that Pochettino is close to being officially installed as Chelsea's permanent successor to Graham Potter, with only 'minor details' left to be settled in negotiations before his announcement.

As per journalist Rob Pratley on Twitter, Pochettino has reportedly identified Mudryk and youngster Levi Colwill as two players who could play a significant role in his project at Stamford Bridge if he does take over.

Pratley suggested: "I understand 2 of the main points Pochettino has impressed the club on is his roadmap for Levi Colwill and Mykhailo Mudryk. The former is viewed as an integral core of the defence, whilst Pochettino has expressed his belief the latter can become an extremely effective goalscorer."

Since arriving at Chelsea for £88.5 million in January, Mudryk has made 14 appearances in all competitions, registering two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Caretaker Blues boss Frank Lampard has defended Mudryk despite his inconsistent form at Chelsea so far, as per Football London, stating: "Every game is an opportunity for young players that have come here, and we also shouldn’t expect too much of players that have just got here. Maybe that is part of the story this year of young players coming in and, because of the performance of the team, being expected to make a difference."

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones has speculated that Pochettino could harness Mudryk's talent at Chelsea and transform him into a wideman capable of getting the same sort of numbers Son Heung-min racked up under his stewardship at Tottenham Hotspur.

Jones told FFC: "The work-rate and goal contributions made Son one of the world’s most dangerous forwards when Poch was at Spurs.

"Pochettino loved the fact he was always switched on. He would work tirelessly for the team in both defensive and attacking situations but more than that he developed a desire to find positions that allowed the entire team performance to level-up.

"In this team it could be Mykhailo Mudryk that clicks up a gear, takes on Poch’s orders, and announces himself as a Son-style headache for Premier League defenders.

"His speed and skill gives him an edge that is unlike any other player and while he has started slowly in England, there are high hopes that every season will bring progress."

Does Mykhailo Mudryk have the attributes to be a success at Chelsea?

Mudryk is definitely someone who can be an essential player at Stamford Bridge in the coming years and he has plenty of time on his side to properly find his feet, given his contract at Chelsea runs until the summer of 2031.

It's important to remember that one big reason why he was brought in was due to his impressive performances for Shakhtar Donetsk, where he regularly came up with vital goal contributions.

In his time at the Ukrainian giants, the 22-year-old netted 12 strikes and laid on a further 19 assists in 44 outings, showing he can be a reliable creator and goalscorer, as per Transfermarkt.

FBRef also show that Mudryk is in the top 2% of his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions for progressive ball carries, averaging 3.70 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days.

Mudryk has all the qualities to be a star for Chelsea and Pochettino could be the man to get the best out of him in west London come 2023/24.
