Durham face relegation if ECB impose points deduction

Durham could face the prospect of a points deduction, and possible relegation, as a consequence of receiving financial support from the ECB

Durham could face the prospect of a points deduction, and possible relegation, as a consequence of receiving financial support from the ECB during the 2016 season that finished last week.In spite of a troubled summer off the field, Durham retained their Division One status thanks to a strong finish to the season, including back-to-back victories in their final two games over Surrey and Hampshire, who were relegated alongside Nottinghamshire. However, to retain their viability, the club had to call upon assistance from the ECB – including an accelerated annual fee payment, as well as the rescheduling of their £923,000 staging fee for the third Test against Sri Lanka in May – to help service debts to the local council, believed to be in the region of £5-6 million. Now, according to a report in The Times, the ECB is considering whether to impose a penalty on Durham as punishment. A points deduction would appear to be the only realistic sanction available to the board, given that a financial penalty would merely exacerbate the club’s issues. However, the situation for the ECB is made more complicated by the circumstances of this year’s County Championship, in which two teams were relegated but only one, Essex, was promoted, to pave the way for next year’s eight-team first division.Whether it should be Hampshire who earn the right to remain in the top flight, having finished 31 points clear of the bottom club, Nottinghamshire, or whether the division two runners-up, Kent, should be promoted alongside Essex (as they would have been in every other season since the two-division structure was introduced in 2000) is a point that is sure to be robustly debated in the event of any sanction. In addition, Durham may argue, with some justification, that any penalty would be unfair, given that they are being penalised, in effect, for carrying out the wishes of the governing body. Their granting of first-class status, in 1992, included the stipulation that the county should develop an international-standard venue. However, the risk of hosting international matches has since shifted from the ECB to the counties themselves, and Durham have found it hard to compete for the biggest games against the more powerful and better established venues to the south. There is no suggestion of financial impropriety at Durham, and other Test-match grounds have accrued greater debts in the course of modernising their venues. However, the club’s remote location makes it harder to diversify and generate the sort of revenues that keep their rivals solvent. The club, which won the County Championship three times in six seasons between 2008 and 2013, has proven itself to be one of the most successful counties in terms of producing England players, with Ben Stokes and Mark Wood among the most recent examples. However, in a sign of potential struggles to come, they have lost two of their most influential batsmen of recent seasons, with Scott Borthwick and Mark Stoneman choosing to move to Surrey.

Spurs Open Talks For £60m-Rated Premier League Talent

Tottenham Hotspur have now opened talks with Leicester City over the possibility of signing James Maddison this summer from the Foxes.

How much could Maddison cost Spurs?

The 26-year-old midfielder endured a tricky campaign at the King Power Stadium over the 2022/23 campaign with his side falling out of the English top flight.

However, that was not through his wrongdoing with the England midfielder shining in what was a seriously underperforming Leicester side.

Indeed, despite the Foxes being relegated, the Englishman was still able to provide 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

As Spurs look to battle to keep their main man, Harry Kane, amid his ongoing contract situation, they could look to capitalise on Maddison's situation at Leicester.

The 26-year-old is going into the summer window with just one year remaining on his current deal meaning the Foxes will likely be forced to sell over the coming weeks/months.

But it seems as if the Foxes still have a high valuation for their midfield maestro ahead of the summer with Alex Crook claiming they could ask for up to £60m.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the transfer insider provided his latest understanding of the interest coming from north London for the Englishman:

"Exclusive information reaching us this lunchtime is that Tottenham have opened talks with Leicester City over a move for England midfielder James Maddison.

"Leicester's relegation from the Premier League was only ratified at a meeting on Thursday. But already, Maddison is planning his next move. No surprise that Spurs are interested in the talented number 10. But we're being told Leicester could ask for a fee of as much as £60m."

Could Maddison finally replace Eriksen?

Spurs had a serious lack of creativity coming from their midfield over the 2022/23 campaign which saw Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg top the assists chart from midfield with just seven in 44 games.

And this has been an issue for Spurs since the departure of Christian Eriksen who proved a real creative spark for the north London side before leaving for Inter Milan.

harry-kane-transfer-newcastle-united-premier-league

Indeed, over his 305 appearances for Spurs, Eriksen was able to return 69 goals and 90 assists across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

The burden has been largely picked up by Kane who has proven a reliable source of creativity over recent years which even saw him pick up the Playmaker award back in 2021.

But by bringing in a player like Maddison who has provided 22 assists in his last two Premier League seasons could potentially reduce the need for Kane to drop deeper and provide the creativity himself.

And adding another attacking option to the current crop of Spurs players could potentially see Kane take his game to another level in front of goal having already netted 30 goals in a struggling Spurs side.

Rangers "Poor" £27k-p/w Dud Must Never Play Again

Glasgow Rangers face a crucial summer transfer window if they aim to become the dominant force in Scottish football yet again, with plenty of ins and outs looking likely.

In truth, the exodus has already begun, with Michael Beale not offering Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor, or Filip Helander extended contracts, freeing up a good chunk of the wage budget.

There could be more to go, with Scott Wright and Jon McLaughlin also set to be departing the Ibrox side this summer, while Glen Kamara has been recently linked with newly promoted Sheffield United, and it appears as though Beale is displaying a ruthless nature when it comes to moving out the deadwood in order to strengthen.

Another player who should be making an exit at the Light Blues is defender Ben Davies, who hasn’t quite settled since arriving from Liverpool last summer for a fee of £4m.

Does Ben Davies have a future at Rangers?

With Filip Helander leaving the club, Beale has Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Leon King and Davies as his centre-back options, however, with Souttar’s improved performances come the end of the season, averaging a stellar Sofascore rating of 7.45/10 from his final four games, it appears he and Goldson could form the main partnership at the heart of defence.

Davies made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Gers, yet missed chunks at the beginning and the end of the season due to injury issues, averaging a rating of 6.94/10 as per Sofascore.

The £27k-per-week defender ranked 16th in the squad for tackles made, seventh for interceptions per game and 14th for overall rating, suggesting his league performances weren’t exactly up to scratch.

Against Celtic in a decisive league encounter back in April, Davies endured probably his worst performance in a Gers shirt, failing to clear a simple ball in the box which eventually resulted in the Parkhead outfit scoring the second goal of the match, and he was criticised after the game by former Rangers' striker Kenny Miller.

He said: “It’s a wonderful finish. Again he’s alert, alive, ruthless when the chance drops.

“But it’s so poor from Ben Davies. He should be heading that out.”

The club appears to be open to offers for the 27-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window and with the poor season he has had, it might be time for the Gers to cut their losses and move him on ahead of 2023/24.

Karunaratne 131 pips Cornwall six-for to put Sri Lanka A ahead

Sri Lanka A’s commanding start to the innings – Test batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera put on 167 for the first wicket – ensured they finished the second day against West Indies A in a strong position. The left-handed opening pair scored at 4.57 per over, with Perera especially going after a West Indian bowling that might have looked even more pedestrian had it not been for Leeward Islands offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall, who ended the day with 6 for 87, his third five-wicket haul in a row in first-class cricket. Cornwall has taken 42 wickets in his last ten innings.Cornwall broke the opening stand and further damaged Sri Lanka A’s momentum as he picked up Lahiru Thirimanne and Roshan Silva shortly after. However, Karunaratne dug in and scored 131, setting up a fifth-wicket stand of 85 with Niroshan Dickwella, who scored 59. Cornwall then returned to take three wickets for no runs as Sri Lanka A slipped to 337 for 8.They finished on 348 for 8, 72 ahead of West Indies A.

Rangers Closing In On £3m Signing Of Dream Morelos Heir

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their efforts to land a replacement for Alfredo Morelos in the summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Sam Lammers to Rangers?

According to Rangers Review, the Light Blues are closing in on a deal to sign Atalanta centre-forward Sam Lammers ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the Gers are on the verge of bringing the Dutchman to Ibrox for a fee in the region of £3m, whilst they are also attempting to sign Cyriel Dessers from Cremonese.

It states that the ex-PSV number nine is keen on a move to Scotland, and he now appears set to become Michael Beale's fourth signing of the summer, following on from Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, and Jack Butland.

What is Sam Lammers' style of play?

The 26-year-old is a forward who has the potential to be a dream Morelos heir having shown promise as a goalscorer who can also provide his teammates with chances to score.

Former Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

Lammers has only registered five league goals combined in the last three seasons – playing in the Serie A and the Bundesliga – but his previous form in his home country suggests that there is still an excellent player to be unearthed as he enters his prime years.

The striker spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Heerenveen and enjoyed an exceptional campaign in the Eredivisie. He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.24 across 31 games and contributed with 16 goals and created 12 'big chances' for his teammates, to go along with 1.2 key passes per match.

At PSV, he caught the eye in the youth set-up with a stunning 46 goals and 21 assists in 101 matches for their U19 and U21 teams combined.

These statistics show that if Beale can get him back to his best, the marksman has the quality to deliver goals and assists on a regular basis from a centre-forward position, which is something that Morelos was able to do during his time at Ibrox.

The Colombian racked up 124 goals and 58 assists in 269 appearances for the Light Blues in all competitions. In 2021/22, the bullish attacker averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.32 across 26 Scottish Premiership outings as he plundered 11 goals and created nine 'big chances' for his teammates.

Morelos was able to regularly contribute at the top end of the box with finishes of his own and passes to set up others, which made him a double-edged threat in the final third.

Lammers, who was once described as "perfectly two-footed" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, certainly has the potential to be an excellent replacement for the now-free agent due to his goalscoring and creative talents as a centre-forward, which could make this £3m deal a possible coup for Beale.

Gabriel, Bishoo pin Pakistan down

A strong comeback in the final session has left West Indies in a good position against Pakistan in the third Test of the series in Sharjah

The Report by Sirish Raghavan30-Oct-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAlthough four Pakistani batsmen made fifties, West Indies finished on top•AFP

After losing another toss and having to bowl again, West Indies rocked Pakistan with Shannon Gabriel’s two wickets in the first over, and had a productive final session to leave Pakistan at 255 for 8 by the end of the first day in Sharjah. Sami Aslam, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfraz Ahmed all made fifties, but Pakistan were pegged back by untimely setbacks, partly of their own making.Resuming at 148 for 3 after tea, Pakistan lost five wickets to concede the advantage to West Indies. Aslam, who had looked increasingly assured for his 74 off 172, was the first to depart. In the first over of the session, he gloved a reverse sweep over the wicketkeeper but Jason Holder ran around from first slip to take a simple catch. Misbah and Sarfraz then added 80 at more than four runs an over, before the Pakistan captain also perished to a reverse sweep that went wrong. Legspiner Devendra Bishoo was the bowler on both occasions and he finished with 4 for 74.That was the start of Pakistan’s silly season. Mohammad Nawaz charged at Bishoo, did not get anywhere near the pitch of the ball and was comprehensively beaten to set up a straightforward stumping. Sarfraz, having brought up an enterprising fifty, drove away from his body, off Gabriel, to drag the ball back onto his stumps. When Bishoo beat Wahab Riaz’s limp forward prod to trap him lbw, Pakistan had lost their last four wickets for 18 runs. They added seven more, before bad light brought proceedings to a premature end, leaving Pakistan to rue the way they had relinquished a good position. It could have been worse. Misbah began his 49th Test in charge – a Pakistan record – by winning his third toss of the series and opting to bat yet again. But that was where the sense of déjà vu ended.Gabriel dismissed Azhar for a first-ball duck off just the second delivery of the match. Banging the ball in short of a length, he got it to rise awkwardly and swing away a touch, to hit the shoulder of the bat and provide a comfortable catch to Kraigg Brathwaite at second slip. It was the third time Gabriel had dismissed Azhar in the series. Then, Gabriel nipped one back into Shafiq to beat his bat and hit his pad. It looked like the ball may have been going down leg, but West Indies reviewed Paul Reiffel’s not-out decision and Hawk-Eye showed it hitting enough of leg stump to send the batsman on his way. Pakistan were 1 for 2.A good start for West Indies could have been even better had Marlon Samuels, fielding at cover, hit the stumps at the keeper’s end after Younis set off for a risky single in the second over. Sami Aslam would have been run-out by a distance. But as both batsmen settled in, they played some lovely shots. Younis timed a half-volley through midwicket for a boundary and followed that up with a gorgeous cover drive a few overs later. Aslam played a beautiful drive through mid-off and unleashed a number of sweeps and slog sweeps. The two put on 106 runs for the third wicket.Younis had a couple of lucky escapes in the 22nd over. He flicked a full ball from offspinner Roston Chase towards midwicket, where Leon Johnson, still wearing a helmet from his stint at a close-in position, dropped a tough catch. Two balls later, Younis charged out but missed a leg-side delivery; wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich fumbled the ball in his haste to effect the stumping and the batsman dived back in to safety.Chase eventually had his man when Younis, on 51, top-edged an attempted sweep to square leg, where Johnson made amends for his earlier drop.Pakistan’s biggest reprieve of the day came halfway through the second session. In the 43rd over, with Misbah batting on 6, Gabriel went up for a big lbw appeal and reviewed the not-out decision. It was a full ball that pitched on off and seemed to miss Misbah’s bat before hitting the pad. Then it hit the back pad, creating two noises and therefore doubt in the on-field umpire’s mind. Without snicko or HotSpot to eliminate the possibility of an inside edge, third umpire Richard Illingworth felt there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the on-field call. Though the ball would have gone on to hit middle, Misbah survived and added another 47 to his score. But Pakistan frittered away their advantage after tea, allowing West Indies to work through their middle and lower orders and have the better of the opening day.

Aston Villa Can Find Grealish 2.0 In ‘Frightening’ £60m Magician

Aston Villa recently confirmed the appointment of Monchi as their new president of football operations and the Spaniard is now tasked with working with Unai Emery to build a competitive squad for next season.

The former Sevilla chief should be looking to improve the team in the coming weeks and months as the club prepare to play Premier League and Europa Conference League football in 2023/24.

One area in which Monchi may look to strengthen is the forward positions. It was recently reported that Villa are interested in a deal to sign Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho, who is available for a fee of €70m (£60m).

The club are not willing to meet the Red Devils' demands at this moment in time but it is said that a compromise could be reached between the two parties.

Would Jadon Sancho be a good signing?

Sancho has the potential to be an exceptional addition to the squad and Monchi could finally uncover Villa's next Jack Grealish by bringing him in this summer.

No Villans player has hit double figures for assists in the Premier League since the now-Manchester City dynamo racked up ten during the 2020/21 campaign and this suggests that Emery's team could do with an injection of creativity.

Former Aston Villa forward Jack Grealish.

Grealish registered 16 assists in his last two league seasons with the club and displayed his finishing quality by finding the back of the net 14 times, which made him the star of the team out on the left flank before his £100m move to The Etihad.

Sancho has only produced nine goals and six assists in two Premier League campaigns since joining United but the left winger's incredible form for Borussia Dortmund earlier in his career suggests that the England international has the ability to be a Grealish-esque figure for Villa.

The 23-year-old scored 38 goals and assisted 51 in just 108 Bundesliga matches for the German giants, which included 12 or more assists in each of his three league seasons. This shows that the skilful wizard excels at creating opportunities for his teammates on a regular basis as a right-footed player on the left.

Jude Bellingham previously described his international colleague's ability as "frightening" and his statistics for Dortmund back that up as the exciting winger proved himself capable of making a huge impact on a regular basis.

Therefore, the potential is there for Sancho to come in at Villa and be the Grealish-like figurehead of their attack if he can rediscover his touch in the final third.
