Chad Bowes followed up a two-ball duck in the first innings with a match-winning 149 against Wellington to take Canterbury to the top of the table. The seven-wicket win, chasing 324 at Basin Reserve, arrived during the final session of the match. This after Matt Henry’s four wickets (match haul of 9 for 137) helped dismiss Wellington for 269 early on the last day. Bowes’ 149 (25 fours, one six) took Canterbury to 236 before he was out, following which unbeaten knocks from Henry Nicholls (71) and Cole McConchie (47) steered them home.Canterbury overcame a first-innings deficit of 54 runs in their win. After half centuries from Michael Papps (76) – who also scored his 11,000th first-class run – and Hamish Marshall (69) helped Wellington to 297 in the midst of a Henry five-for, they returned strongly to bowl out Canterbury for 243. A lone hand from Peter Fulton (79) displayed some resistance for Canterbury in the first innings even as Anurag Verma’s four wickets crippled the visitors. Wellington’s 269 – Stephen Murdoch top scored with 56 – set Canterbury the stiff target of 324 to chase on the final day, but Bowes, Nicholls and McConchie were up to the challenge.Colin Munro was told by New Zealand coach Mike Hesson to return to the Plunket Shield and regain confidence after a difficult start to the year. He responded in magnificent fashion for Auckland at Colin Maiden Park, with barnstorming twin centuries, the 11th and 12th of his career: a first innings 146 off 109 balls followed by 142 off 103 deliveries. The opening day had been abandoned due to a damp area on the pitch and although Central Districts, who are at the bottom of the points table, tried to manufacture a result by declaring behind on the third day, the match petered out to a draw. But it was a memorable few days for Munro, who had made seven single-figure scores in ten previous innings in 2017. Though there was a T20 century included against Bangladesh, his lack of consistency had been highlighted by Hesson following a first-ball duck in the T20 against South Africa. When play began on the second day, Munro scored an 84-ball hundred and added 210 for the fourth wicket with Rob Nicol (86) to take Auckland to 385 for 5 declared. Central Districts fell to 66 for 5 in reply, but Tom Bruce’s unbeaten 127 enabled them to pull out 129 behind. Munro then got going again, racing to a 60-ball century and took his match tally to 12 sixes. The declaration finally came with a lead of 389 but less than two sessions remained and a result was never on.Anaru Kitchen followed up his 143 not out in the Ford Trophy against Northern Districts three weeks ago with another unbeaten century against them to take Otago to a five-wicket win in the Plunket Shield. This was Otago’s first win in the Plunket Shield and lifted them out of bottom place.Kitchen’s unbeaten 120 came in a chase of 289 that was set up primarily by BJ Watling’s 96 and Joe Walker’s 87 at No. 9, after Northern Districts had been reduced to 0 for 3 and, subsequently, 61 for 5 in their second innings. The pair put on 91 for the eighth wicket, and Walker then added 64 for the ninth with James Baker to lift them to 286.Otago’s bowlers all chipped in with wickets, although Nathan Smith followed up his first-innings five-for with only one in the second. This after Scott Kuggeleijn’s 5 for 68 had inflicted a collapse that saw Otago fall from 242 for 4 to 276 all out and concede a lead of 2. Kitchen struck 76 in the first innings and put on 138 for the fifth wicket with Derek de Boorder (89). De Boorder fell cheaply in the chase, but his wicket was followed by partnerships of 86 and 85, and opener Brad Wilson’s 74 played the supporting act to Kitchen’s 120 off 146, as they completed the win in the 74th over.

Tottenham: Spurs Nearing Another Major Signing

Tottenham Hotspur are "not far off" completing a deal for Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven with talks suddenly progressing in the last few days, according to journalsit Graeme Bailey.

Who are Spurs signing?

New Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, despite only officially starting work on Saturday, has already watched his side complete three major deals.

Dejan Kulusevski, who has spent the last 18 months on loan from Juventus, recently completed a permanent move to Tottenham with both goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and playmaker James Maddison following the Swede.

Postecoglou, speaking after the captures of both Maddison and Vicario, professed his joy at the signings and drew particular attention to their elite mentality.

“It’s not just about the talent they bring as footballers," said Postecoglou.

"It’s what they bring as people as well because we are going to play football that requires a certain type of personality and character.

“Both those guys have got it in abundance. I could hear it in their voices when I spoke to them. I had a couple of chats with both of them before we signed them and I knew that they were the right types to bring into the dressing room."

Following on from the aforementioned trio, it is believed Spurs are also closing in on the signing of Israel international Manor Solomon as well, who is due for a medical at Hotspur Way soon.

The former Fulham loanee could soon be joined by a star centre-back, with Spurs pushing to revamp their leaky defence which conceded a poor 63 league goals last season.

Tosin Adarabioyo of Fulham, Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba and van de Ven have been most recently mentioned as top transfer targets for the role.

Reporter Bailey of 90min, sharing news on Twitter, has a promising update on the latter defender, as Spurs talks for van de Ven progress in recent days.

It is believed the Lilywhites are "not far off" agreeing a deal for the 22-year-old who dazzled in the Bundesliga over 2022/2023.

"Tottenham's talks with Wolfsburg over Dutch defender Micky van de Ven have progressed well in last few days. Deal is not far off from being finalised and personal terms not an issue."

What's been said about Micky van de Ven?

The Dutchman has been a pivotal figure under Niko Kovac, especially last campaign, with no other Wolfsburg player making more blocks per 90 than him (WhoScored).

Standing out as a brilliant ball-playing defender, van de Ven averaged the highest pass accuracy percentage (88.3%) of any Wolfsburg regular with more than one start (WhoScored).

The Bundesliga's offical website have also described van de Ven as a lightning quick defender with huge potential, even likening him to Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.

They wrote:

"Much like Liverpool’s Dutch centre-back, Van de Ven can be a nightmare for attacking players with his immense strength, determination and precision tackling scuppering the most promising of forward moves. With incredible pace and passing ability among his many assets, the Netherlands U21 international – who captained his country at the 2023 UEFA Europan Under-21 Championship – is on course to become a regular for the senior Oranje in the near future."

Run out rule change in focus, again

For the second time in three days, a batsman has been given out despite the bulk of his body having crossed the plane of the crease

For the second time in three days, a batsman has been given out despite the bulk of his body having crossed the plane of the crease.Dinesh Chandimal did initially ground his bat behind the crease as he sauntered in to complete a second run, in the 26th over, but he briefly raised it again as his body passed the line. His feet, however, did not touch the ground before the bails were dislodged.Collecting a good throw from deep point, wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim snapped the bails off and appealed – if without much conviction. The Bangladesh fielders had actually returned to their fielding positions while third umpire S Ravi reviewed the footage, but were ecstatic at having wangled an important wicket when the decision came through. It was only on Thursday that Evin Lewis was run out in similar circumstances in at T20 against Pakistan in the Port-of-Spain. On that occasion, however, a collision had seen Lewis lose grip of his bat, and had contributed to his inability to ground some part of his body. And the Chandimal run out was also the second such dismissal Bangladesh have effected this year, with Neil Wagner having been dismissed this way in a Test match in January. Wagner had also grounded his bat, then raised it before the stumps were broken. The run out rule is about to change, however. From October, a batsman who has grounded his bat behind the crease before the bails are broken, cannot be given out even if the bat is later raised (provided it is clear the batsman is not attempting another run). Neither Wagner or Chandimal would have been out under that rule.

Everton Have Enquired Over Signing Of £20k-A-Week Attacker

Everton are reportedly in the mix to sign Leeds United youngster Wilfried Gnonto in the summer transfer window, having enquired about his availability.

What does Wilfried Gnonto earn per week?

The 19-year-old, who currently earns £20,000 per week, was one of the rare bright sparks for the Whites last season in a campaign that ultimately saw them relegated from the Premier League and sent back to the Championship for the first time since 2020.

Leeds simply never got going throughout the campaign, but Gnonto did his best to make things happen in the final third. The youngster provided attacking substance by registering six goal contributions in the league (two goals and four assists), and he couldn't be blamed too much for his side's poor form.

With the Whites now preparing for life in the second tier again, they have to accept that a number of key players will move on in order to remain in the top flight. Gnonto is one of them despite his tender years, considering he is already a 12-cap Italy international.

Everton have been linked with a move for the teenage winger who once clashed with Seamus Coleman during a game, as they look to bring in some exciting attacking signings in the current window – and a fresh update has now emerged.

Could Everton sign Wilfried Gnonto?

According to Football Insider, Everton are one of numerous Premier League clubs in the race to sign Gnonto this summer, with Leeds all but accepting that he will move on:

"Leeds are expecting Wilfried Gnonto to depart from the club in this transfer window. There is a lot of interest in the winger, with Aston Villa, Everton and Crystal Palace all having made enquires for the Italian international.

"Gnonto, 19, is also attracting interest abroad as clubs in Italy and other clubs around Europe have also expressed interest in the youngster."

This is an encouraging update for Everton, suggesting that their interest in Gnonto hasn't gone away and that they are willing to battle their rivals for his signature. The Leeds ace could be a really exciting addition at Goodison Park, possessing the rare ability to get fans off their seat with his quality and fearlessness in the final third.

Indeed, Leeds coach Michael Skubala previously summed up how highly he thinks of him as a player, saying:

"He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

Gnonto will surely like the idea of returning to the Premier League, even though a move back to his homeland could also appeal, and the hope is that Sean Dyche can sell him a move to Everton, talking up why it would be an ideal next destination for him.

The Blues lacked firepower in attacking areas all season long in 2022/23, with Dwight McNeil their top scorer in the league with just seven goals, but the Italian starlet could aid that situation, immediately making them more of a force from the off next year.

Carlos Alcaraz Names Amazing Dream Football Starting 11

Even whilst Carlos Alcaraz was busy cementing himself among the best tennis players around right now, defeating Novak Djokovic to take the Wimbledon crown, the 20-year-old still had time to name his dream football XI.

Still at such a young age, the Spaniard's football knowledge extends to years before he could have really experienced the beautiful game. On top of that, he had the privilege of growing up watching football in an era full of stars. We're talking Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andreas Iniesta, and Thierry Henry. It's no wonder he was keen to name his dream team.

With that said, we've taken a look at who was included in his line-up.

Who won Wimbledon 2023?

Impressing the tennis world by defeating Djokovic on grass, Alcaraz placed his name among the best in the world by winning Wimbledon.

Getting past Jeremy Chardy in the First Round, the Spaniard went on to defeat Alexandre Muller, Nicolas Jarry, Matteo Berrettini, Holger Rune, and Danni Medvedev to set up the final against Djokovic.

In picking up the win, Alcaraz became the first player not named Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, or Andy Murray to win Wimbledon since 2002 – when the Spaniard wasn't even born yet.

Speaking on the win, the 20-year-old said: "Beating Novak, winning Wimbledon, is something that I dreamed about since I started playing tennis.

"It's the happiest moment of my life. I think it's not going to change for a long time."

Who was included in Carlos Alcaraz's dream football XI?

Starting in goal, the tennis star named Iker Casillas as his number one, which comes as no surprise given Alcaraz's Spanish nationality. He stuck with the Spanish theme throughout the backline, too, naming both Sergio Ramos and Carles Puyol, before going down the Brazilian route with his full-backs by naming Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

It gets even more impressive as it goes on. The midfield is aesthetically as good as it gets, and not many would stand a chance at getting the ball off them. Alcaraz named Luka Modric, Zinedine Zidane, and Iniesta.

Can we just take a second to imagine that trio together? It would simply be unfair on anyone who dared to commence a battle of technique in the middle of the park.

The team peaks in the frontline, though, with Messi combining with Ronaldo, and the legendary Brazilian Ronaldo. It simply wouldn't be a dream team without those three.

You can see the full line-up below:

Looking at the team as a whole, Alcaraz has arguably done a perfect job, combining the best players across different eras to make what would undoubtedly be an unstoppable side. For the sake of European football, it's a good job that it's a mere fantasy, and only that.

If we could find one criticism, it would be certain players who were unlucky to miss out. There could be a shout for Sergio Busquets, for example, who remains one of the most underrated players of all time. The Barcelona man would add the perfect defensive balance to allow the likes of Iniesta and Zidane to do what they do best.

No doubt, many of you will also be able to think of others who were also deserving of a spot – but, of course, football is a game of differing opinions after all.

Worcestershire unbeaten record falls at Hove

Sussex handed Worcestershire their first Specsavers County Championship defeat of the season after wrapping up an innings victory at Hove

ECB Reporters Network05-Jun-2017
ScorecardSussex handed Worcestershire their first Specsavers County Championship defeat of the season after wrapping up an innings victory at Hove. The Sussex seam attack took advantage of a pitch offering plenty of uneven bounce on the final day to dismiss Worcestershire for 260 50 minutes after lunch and complete their second win of the season by an innings and seven runs.Sussex looked like winning a lot earlier after taking two wickets in the first five overs after Worcestershire resumed on 124 for 4, still needing 143 runs to make their hosts bat again.Vernon Philander produced a brute of a ball that climbed and left Ben Cox which the batsman touched to second slip.’We can match anyone’ – Nash

“Worcestershire are a good side but I think when we get it together we are a match for anyone in this division,” said Sussex’s captain Chris Nash after their victory.
“It was a really good team performance. We know that if we can get runs on the board we have a bowling attack who are going to make life hard for any side.
“We just need to find that consistency now. We’ve won two games and if we can win a couple more before the T20 starts we’ll be in a good position. There is still a lot of Championship cricket to be played.”

Worcestershire had added just four runs to their overnight score when they lost their sixth wicket as Jofra Archer, generating good pace from the Sea End, nipped one back onto nightwatchman Josh Tongue’s off stump.Worcestershire were 128 for 6 at that stage but seventh-wicket pair Ross Whiteley and Ed Barnard frustrated Sussex for the rest of the morning session as they added 79 in 25 overs.Whiteley was twice reprieved by Sussex skipper Chris Nash at second slip, first off Philander and then Archer, and both batsmen were struck on the body by short-of-a-length deliveries which rose sharply. With rain forecast, Worcestershire began the afternoon session confident of saving the game but in the first over after the resumption Stiaan van Zyl drew Barnard forward and a thin edge was taken by wicketkeeper Michael Burgess.Whiteley went to 50, from 102 balls with eight fours, but after adding three more runs his brave resistance ended when David Wiese, armed with the new ball, cut one back off the seam to find the edge.Philander cleverly held one back and Joe Leach drove to mid-on and the South African secured victory when he had Jack Shantry held at second slip.Sussex take 23 points and Worcestershire 4 and it was a much-needed win for the hosts as they look to claw back the early advantage established by Nottinghamshire and Kent at the top of the second division.Chris Nash’s term as Sussex captain began with victory [file picture]•Getty Images
