Hasaranga hat-trick, Sandakan four; Zimbabwe 155

A new-look Sri Lanka spin attack hit the ground running to dismiss Zimbabwe for 155 and set up a seven-wicket win in the second ODI in Galle

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando02-Jul-2017Sri Lanka 158 for 3 (Tharanga 75*, Dickwella 35, Chatara 2-33) beat Zimbabwe 155 (Masakadza 41,Waller 38, Sandakan 4-52, Hasaranga 3-15) by seven wickets

Two days after Sri Lanka’s slow bowlers were crashed around at Galle, two fresh spinners trussed up Zimbabwe’s middle order, before Sri Lanka’s batsmen completed a largely unflustered chase of 156. The heft of this seven-wicket victory – achieved with 19.5 overs remaining in the innings – will put some confidence back to into the Sri Lanka side, following their shock defeat on Friday.Nineteen-year-old legspinner Wanidu Hasaranga made the most dramatic contribution, becoming the third debutant in ODI history to claim a hat-trick, when he wiped out Zimbabwe’s tail with the 14th, 15th and 16th deliveries of his international career. But by that stage, Sri Lanka were already in command, thanks largely to Lakshan Sandakan, who was sidelined for long periods by the selectors but was deadly upon his return here.Zimbabwe’s batsmen tried to sweep him hard, and often, as they had done to Amila Aponso and Akila Dananjaya in the last match, but Sandakan, wise to this plan, switched up his lines when he saw a premeditated shot coming. And in any case, he enacted so many revolutions on the ball that his dip and bounce prompted fatal mistakes. He had Craig Ervine caught behind, before Sikandar Raza top-edged a reverse sweep, and Ryan Burl was bowled attempting one. Peter Moor then edged the ball back onto his stumps, and Sandakan claimed a final analysis of 4 for 52. To Angelo Mathews’ credit, he allowed Sandakan to bowl out early in the game despite a shaky economy rate. All ten of his overs were delivered between the 10th and 31st of the innings.Hasaranga, meanwhile, was required to deliver only 2.4 overs, but was nerveless in that spell, persisting with an aggressive length even when batsmen had hit boundaries off him. In fact, his hat-trick came immediately after Malcolm Waller crunched him down the ground for four. Waller was bowled off the inside edge by an arm ball, before Donald Tiripano and Tendai Chatara were both dismissed by googlies. Like the men who had come to crowd the bat, the packed banks of his home ground also went into a frenzy at the hat-trick wicket. Hasaranga became the fifth Sri Lanka bowler to claim an ODI hat trick, and the third to do so on debut, after Taijul Islam and Kagiso Rabada.Wanidu Hasaranga became the third bowler, after Taijul Islam and Kagiso Rabada, to claim a hat-trick on ODI debut•AFP

Zimbabwe had their moments in the match, but unlike on Friday, could not mount pressure on Sri Lanka for sustained periods of time. Tendai Chatara claimed two wickets in his second over, but Upul Tharanga soon becalmed the innings, and very quickly, Sri Lanka were steadily sailing towards the target – Tharanga 75 not out, to follow his unbeaten 79 on Friday.Hamilton Masakadza and Craig Ervine had earlier been involved in a promising 56-run second-wicket stand in Zimbabwe’s innings, but when Masakadza was caught and bowled sharply by Asela Gunaratne, a collapse followed. Zimbabwe lost five of their top six for 52 runs, in the space of 10.3 overs. Malcolm Waller offered the only resistance, slapping six boundaries in his 29-ball 38 – all but one of those boundaries coming off the spinners. While he and Peter Moor were at the crease, Zimbabwe would still have hoped for a score of over 200, but Hasaranga would wipe out the tail faster than anyone would have imagined.Gunathilaka played on attempting to pull Chatara in the third over, and Kusal Mendis edged a leg-side ball to the keeper, but though the early overs remained tense, Zimbabwe could not make enough headway in them to push the hosts. Tharanga was poised early in his innings, pushing gentle singles and twos while Niroshan Dickwella ventured more aggressive strokes, but when Sri Lanka passed 100, he began to flow. He hit two leg-side boundaries to go to his fifth fifty-plus score in his last eight innings, and continued to attack as Sri Lanka drew near the total. At the other end was Angelo Mathews, prodding his team towards their target with characteristic care.Zimbabwe will perhaps feel that they deployed the sweep shot a little too eagerly on this occasion, after that stroke brought them Friday’s success. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, may reflect on the benefits of deploying a wicket-taking spin bowler through the middle overs.

Man United: Transfer insider claims Ten Hag has "number nine" option

Manchester United were 'always confident' that they would be able to tie Marcus Rashford down to a new long-term deal at Old Trafford, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Has Marcus Rashford signed a new contract at Manchester United?

As per The Daily Mail, Rashford has signed a new five-year deal at Manchester United that will see him earn a basic wage of £300,000 per week at Old Trafford.

Bagging a wage increase of £50,000 per week from his previous deal, the England international couldn't contain his excitement when discussing his decision to commit his future to his boyhood club, stating in an interview: "I joined Manchester United as a seven-year-old boy with a dream. That same passion, pride, and determination to succeed still drives me every time I have the honour of wearing the shirt.

I've already had some amazing experiences at this incredible club, but there is still a lot more to achieve and I remain relentlessly determined to win more trophies in the years ahead."

Last term, Rashford was the catalyst for the Red Devils' improvement under boss Erik Ten Hag, as he notched 30 goals and 11 assists in 56 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

The Athletic have revealed that Rashford rejected offers from at least one Premier League rival to stay at Manchester United and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain were also believed to have been sniffing around the 25-year-old.

Rashford's contract renewal is the latest positive in a recent flurry of good news surrounding the club and follows on from Mason Mount's arrival last month from Chelsea for an initial fee of £55 million, as per Sky Sports.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones has indicated that Manchester United were always relaxed during the process of trying to get Rashford to commit his future to the club.

Jones told FFC: "They were always confident for quite a long time now that the Rashford deal was shaping up in the way they wanted it. I guess the best news to come out of this is that they've definitely got an option at number nine for the start of next season, because Marcus Rashford will be there and he is certainly somebody that Ten Hag has trusted in that role and he'll be able to fill that role if he needs to."

What next for Manchester United?

Undoubtedly, Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag will now be keen to continue his recruitment spree at Old Trafford as he gears his side up for a tilt at the Premier League title.

Journalist Samuel Luckhurst, who is the chief Manchester United writer for The Manchester Evening News, has taken to Twitter to reveal that Andre Onana's pending transfer to the Red Devils from Inter Milan is nearing completion, as he stated: "Andre Onana is at Carrington now for his medical."

Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund

Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund looks to be the next port of call for Ten Hag and Manchester United are believed to be in 'advanced talks' with the Serie A outfit to negotiate the structure of the potential transfer, having already thrashed out personal terms with the Denmark international, according to The Independent.

Respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Urawa Red Diamonds goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has emerged as another target in the goalkeeper department and the Red Devils will focus on trying to bring in the Japan international once the addition of Onana is finalised.

Southampton: TalkSPORT man drops huge prediction

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has backed Russell Martin's "delicious" football to succeed in the Championship and expects Southampton to be fighting for the title next season.

What's the latest Southampton news?

Following a season in which Southampton finished rock bottom of the Premier League, burned through three different managers and played some truly dismal football, it's understandable that there may be some caution among Saints fans.

The arrival of Russell Martin from Swansea City has been cause for optimism among sections of the fan base who are hopeful of a quick return to the English top-flight.

Martin's only game in charge so far was a 4-2 win over League One side Reading in pre-season and the 37-year-old has his work cut out to get the Saints into shape before their Championship opener against newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday on August 4th.

However, MacAnthony is a big fan of his former Peterborough player Martin, backing him to succeed with the Saints and mould them into a team capable of fighting for the title.

Speaking on talkSPORT about last season's relegated Premier League sides in the second division, MacAnthony said: "I honestly did think Leeds and Leicester would vie for the title. Southampton, now Russell's in there, and I had Russell Martin in 2021 as one of our signings at right-back, I fancy what he will do [at Southampton].

"Your two guys in here that do the news are Southampton fans and I said to them the football is going to be delicious. I honestly think Southampton and Leicester now for me for the title. Leeds need to do some business, it's a concern."

In relation to director of football Rasmus Ankersen's decision to bring Nathan Jones in last season as manager, he added: "The mistake for me was the move for obviously Nathan Jones. If Russell Martin had gone to Southampton instead of Nathan Jones at the time, Southampton would still be in the Premier League."

Southampton fans will be hopeful that MacAnthony's glowing praise of Martin is supported by results on the pitch when the season starts up again.

Martin still has work to do in the transfer market as well, with deals for Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento and James Ward-Prowse potentially earning the club a fortune that can be reinvested across the team.

The Saints have two more pre-season friendlies on the calendar with home games against Bournemouth and AZ Alkmaar enabling Martin to fine-tune his tactical approach on the south coast.

Who are Southampton signing?

What Martin does in relation to incomings in the final month of the transfer window will prove pivotal for the Saints.

Martin has brought full-back Ryan Manning with him from Swansea already and has also added young Manchester City prodigy Shea Charles to his squad.

The likes of Mislav Orsic, Ibrahima Diallo, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Theo Walcott have all left, with many more outgoings likely.

Rumours regarding incomings have been remarkably sparse however, with Martin perhaps waiting for big sales to go through before addressing the areas of his team that require improvement.

One man that has been linked with St Mary's is Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury who has returned to the Midlands following a Championship loan with Watford last term. Martin is reportedly a big fan of the defensive midfielder but whether the Foxes would sell to a promotion rival is unclear.

Another midfielder on the club's radar could be Flynn Downes of West Ham United, who could be offered as part of a deal for Ward-Prowse, although reports have suggested the Saints are not interested in the 24-year-old.

Australia target 300 total in World Cup opener

Australia’s captain Meg Lanning is targeting a total beyond 300 as the World Cup favourites commence their campaign against a familiar finals foe – West Indies

Australia’s captain Meg Lanning is targeting a total beyond 300 as the World Cup favourites commence their campaign against a familiar finals foe – West Indies. While Australia – then known as the Southern Stars – were victorious over the Caribbean side in the final of 2013 tournament in Mumbai, West Indies returned the favour in Kolkata last year to lift the World T20 title for the first time.Ahead of their tournament opener in the picturesque surrounds of Taunton in Somerset, Lanning eyed the county ground’s short boundaries and fast outfield and hoped for sustained aggression from her batting line-up over 50 overs.”It’d be nice to get there,” she said of 300. “The ground looks like it runs pretty quick and obviously with the square all the way across as well it picks up a bit of pace off there, so we’ll just have to assess the conditions to start off with and make sure we get a good base with the bat and then launch towards the end.”Generally the scores here in one-day county games have been very good, and the practice wickets today came onto the bat pretty well as well. There was a bit of drizzle around today which made them a bit skiddy, but we’re expecting the wicket to be pretty good for batting and plenty of runs [in it], so hopefully our batters can cash in.”The loss to West Indies last year has not been a point of major discussion among Australia’s players, but Lanning did not shy away from the fact that it had hurt her team a great deal. For that reason as much as any, it means she is not looking too closely at the slow start they have made in warm-up fixtures.”There’s no doubt that loss really hurt our group and I think we’ve improved a lot since that loss and we’re playing the 50-over format rather than T20, so we’re confident going in,” Lanning said. “We feel like our preparation has been really good and hopefully, come [match day], we’re ready to execute really well.”We’re not reading too much into the warm-up results, we’re expecting a very good West Indies side to come out and we’re expecting them to play at their best. We’re looking forward to the challenge, we really enjoy playing against them and they’re usually very good games. So we know we need to play really well to beat them and hopefully we can come out and start off well.”It has been a long time coming, the preparation has been long but it has been great and we feel like we’ve had enough time to get used to the conditions in the UK. Now everyone else is playing, we’re just itching to get out there and get started.”Australia’s XI remains a matter for conjecture, with the likes of Rachael Haynes pushing for inclusion in the top six and a trio of spin options also in the mix.

Ashwin, Jadeja wrap up 304-run win

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each as India secured their biggest away win in terms of runs, an hour after tea on the fourth day

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy29-Jul-20171:43

Agarkar: The gulf between both sides stood exposed

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each as India wrapped up a 304-run win – their biggest runs margin away – halfway through the final session of day four. With finger injuries leaving Rangana Herath and Asela Gunaratne unavailable to bat, India only needed to take eight second-innings wickets. They completed the task in 76.5 overs, with Dimuth Karunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella proving their only real roadblocks.Karunaratne enhanced his reputation as a specialist in the second innings – where he now averages 42.14 as against 27.32 in the first – with 97, while Dickwella contributed a skittish 67 to a fifth-wicket stand of 101.Otherwise, India didn’t have to work too hard for wickets on a firmer-than-usual Galle pitch that offered consistent bounce and only occasionally sharp turn, after setting Sri Lanka the task of surviving the best part of two full days or chasing an improbable 550.The fifth-wicket partnership looked unlikely to last too long when it began, with Dickwella playing a series of risky shots – sweeps off the stumps, inside-out drives, dabs with an open face – while new to the crease. But he survived and eventually settled, and Sri Lanka could breathe a little easier, particularly with Karunaratne looking calm and secure at the other end, taking the singles afforded him by Virat Kohli’s puzzlingly defensive fields and picking up the odd boundary with the square-cut or flick. But danger was never too far away. As tea approached, Hardik Pandya found both batsmen’s outside edges in a seven-over spell of reverse-swing. Karunaratne’s uncertain jab flew through a mostly vacant cordon – one wide slip and no gully – and Dickwella’s was shelled by Ajinkya Rahane, who flew to his left from gully for a difficult one-hander.Eventually, both batsmen were out sweeping Ashwin. Dickwella fell in the fifth over after tea, undone by bounce and sending a thin edge to the keeper, and Karunaratne followed him 11.3 overs later, dragging a bottom-edge onto his stumps when he was in sight of a sixth Test hundred. Nuwan Pradeep then fell for a two-ball duck, stretching out and failing to get to the pitch of an Ashwin offbreak that grabbed inside-edge on its way to a diving catch at leg slip. Lahiru Kumara was last to go, top-edging a slog-sweep off Jadeja and holing out to mid-off.The new-ball bowlers took an early wicket each after India declared early in the morning. Mohammed Shami struck the first blow, going around the wicket, hitting the seam, and getting the ball to bounce disconcertingly at Upul Tharanga. First, the ball seamed away just a touch after angling in, and Tharanga, poking away from his body, edged to second slip, where Kohli shelled a sitter. No worries for Shami. One ball later, he produced another peach, this one coming back in, lifting, and cramping the left-hander for room. All he could do was chop the ball on to his stumps. Then, in the sixth over of Sri Lanka’s innings, Danushka Gunathilaka fell to a loose shot for the second time on Test debut. Umesh Yadav had Cheteshwar Pujara stationed at square leg, just in front of square. It was either a routine field placement or India had sussed out a tendency to flick in the air. In either case, he failed to keep that shot down against a full ball that swung into his pads, and Pujara took a simple, low catch.Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis took Sri Lanka to lunch with a half-century stand for the third wicket. They weren’t especially tight with their defence, every now and then playing and missing when they could have left alone. One loose drive from Mendis, off Umesh, resulted in an edge that didn’t quite carry to second slip. That apart, though, both batsmen looked comfortable, Karunaratne strong off his pads and Mendis fluent while driving and cutting. The spinners, who hadn’t yet settled in their 10 overs before lunch, began finding more turn and bounce after the break. In the seventh over after the break, a tendency to play away from his body at Jadeja consumed Mendis. Having just punched Jadeja to cover off the back foot, he tried the same shot off the next ball. This one, though, was fired in quicker, and bounced higher to take the edge.Three-and-a-half-overs later, Angelo Mathews fell to an ill-advised shot, jumping out and looking to hit over mid-on. To give the bowler credit, though, Jadeja beat the batsman in the air, and found sharp turn. Nowhere near the pitch, Mathews sent a leading edge ballooning to backward point.India declared 6.3 overs into the morning, having clattered 51 in that time, with Virat Kohli, who resumed on 76, bringing up his 17th Test hundred and 10th as captain. Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane hit only two fours and a six in that time, but scored off all but seven balls they faced, against Sri Lanka’s deep-set fields.

Man United: Transfer insider thinks huge "story" has been "planted"

Manchester United completing an 'unbelievable' deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this window would require 'a bit of a miracle' at present, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Where could Harry Kane end up this summer?

According to The Guardian, Manchester United could revive their interest in Spurs marksman Kane this summer after it emerged that Tottenham majority owner Joe Lewis has spoken to chairman Daniel Levy and told him that the England international can't run his £200k-a-week contract down in north London.

It is thought that Kane would fetch a fee of around £100 million; however, he also has an offer for a new deal on the table from Tottenham which he is yet to sign.

Football Insider report that Manchester United are said to be Kane's preferred option if he has to depart Tottenham, though Bayern Munich will submit a third bid worth near £100 million after seeing two opening proposals booted out by the Lilywhites.

Part of the motivation behind Kane's preference to move to Old Trafford is said to be the opportunity to continue to play in the Premier League as he chases down Alan Shearer's all-time goalscoring record.

Last term, Kane produced some incredible form despite Tottenham's unsuccessful campaign, registering 32 goals and five assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that it would take something out of the ordinary for Kane to become a Manchester United player this summer.

Jones told FFC: "I’m just very, very sceptical about this one. It really does have the feel of a story that has been planted to raise a narrative and at the end of the day – even if Kane is available – his price to United is higher than it is for anyone else in the world. Spurs will not want him going there, no way. I totally understand the feeling that losing a £100million asset for nothing in a year does not make much sense, but I can also see why Spurs feel that having Kane in their team for one more season is priceless.

"How much would someone pay to have Kane for one year, guaranteeing them 25-30 goals? That’s basically what Spurs have right now and the value on something like that is massive. So you have to use that to counter the fact they will lose the tangible cash on Kane. It would be an unbelievable story if Kane was to join United, but it is going to take a bit of a miracle at this stage."

What now for Manchester United?

Manchester United already have turned their attention towards another striker target in the form of Atalanta rising star Rasmus Hojlund as Erik Ten Hag looks to strengthen his frontline.

Telegraph Sport claim that despite their interest, the Red Devils are insistent that they won't cross the £60 million mark due to 'tight financial restrictions'.

Fiorentina midfielderSofyan Amrabat.

Gazzetta dello Sport via The Daily Mail claim that Manchester United are also closing in on a £22 million deal for Fiorentina defensive midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

talkSPORT understand that veteran defender Jonny Evans could also be handed a longer deal after initially signing a short-term contract to participate in the Red Devils' pre-season.

Leeds: Farke In Talks To Sign Bargain "Top-Class" 5 ft 11 Defender

An update has emerged on Leeds United and their plans to possibly add a new defender to their ranks ahead of the 2023/24 Championship campaign this weekend…

What's the latest Leeds transfer news?

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites are in talks with full-back Sam Byram over a possible deal to sign for Daniel Farke's team this season.

The report claims that the former Norwich City defender, who departed Carrow Road on a free transfer this summer, has impressed the club on and off the pitch throughout his trial period.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

He has played three pre-season matches and could now earn himself a permanent contract at Elland Road, where he began his professional career, as Farke and his staff continue to consider a swoop for his services.

However, there is no immediate need for a decision to be made as the 5 foot 11 ace is a free agent and could be signed after the summer transfer window slams shut, which means that the club have time on their hands to assess his fitness and suitability before committing to a deal.

How good is Sam Byram?

The versatile defender is a solid Championship full-back who could be an excellent option for Farke to call upon at left-back, which is where the German tactician largely deployed him during their time together in the 2019/20 campaign with Norwich.

Byram could be a dream partner for Whites forward Luis Sinisterra on the left flank as the English enforcer could provide the Colombia international with a platform to go and attack opposition teams with freedom.

Leeds forward Luis Sinisterra.

The former West Ham dynamo, who Farke recently praised as a "top-class" character, showcased his ability to win possession back for the team on a regular basis last term with 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game across 15 Championship appearances for the Canaries.

He also displayed his strength with a ground duel success rate of 65%, which shows that the experienced campaigner rarely allowed his opponent to get the better of him, and was only dribbled past 0.3 times per match.

Whereas, Junior Firpo lost 51% of his ground battles and was dribbled past 1.2 times per outing in the Premier League for the Whites last term, as per Sofascore.

This suggests that Byram could be an upgrade on the former Barcelona man at left-back in terms of their work out of possession by stopping the opposition more efficiently, without allowing wingers to take the ball past him as easily.

Therefore, the 29-year-old warrior could be perfect for Sinisterra as he could be a solid option behind the exciting winger who would allow the former Feyenoord man to express himself going forward without needing to worry about covering for Firpo.

The Colombian dynamo, who scored seven goals in all competitions for Leeds last term, racked up an outstanding 23 goals and 14 assists across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign in the Netherlands.

This shows that the potential is there for the 24-year-old wizard to be a sensational player for Farke this season if he is able to rediscover his best form at the top end of the pitch, which could be helped by the signing of free-agent gem Byram to partner him on the left flank.
