Bangladesh gain control after Shakib's five-for

Bangladesh pushed their lead to 88, with nine wickets in hand, after bowling Australia out for 217 on the second day in Mirpur

The Report by Brydon Coverdale28-Aug-2017Bangladesh 260 and 45 for 1 (Tamim 30*, Taijul 0*) lead Australia 217 (Renshaw 45, Shakib 5-68, Mehidy 3-62) by 88 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShakib Al Hasan marked the first day of his 50th Test match by scoring a half-century; on the second day, he continued the party with a five-wicket haul. There is every reason to think that by the end of this match, he might be celebrating Bangladesh’s first ever Test win over Australia. But that is getting ahead of proceedings. For the time being, Bangladesh will be content with the strong position in which they find themselves at stumps on day two.It was a day that began brilliantly for Bangladesh. Australia walked out on 18 for 3, and within three overs they had stumbled to 33 for 4 when Steven Smith danced down the pitch, tried to flick Mehidy Hasan through the leg side and was bowled. Smith is easily Australia’s best player of spin – three centuries in four Tests in India earlier this year attest to that. To lose him in these conditions was to hand Bangladesh complete control.Pat Cummins was bowled for a patient 25•Getty Images

There was a fightback of sorts from Australia, first through a 69-run partnership between Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw, and then a 49-run stand involving Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins. But Bangladesh remained well on top. By the close of play their first-innings lead of 43 had ballooned back out to 88, with nine wickets in hand. Only Soumya Sarkar, who rashly holed out to a juggling Usman Khawaja at long-on off Ashton Agar, had fallen for 15. Tamim Iqbal was set on 30, with nightwatchman Taijul Islam yet to score. But the key man on this day, as on the first day, was Shakib, who for the eighth time in his Test career combined a half-century with a five-wicket haul. Only Ian Botham has done so on more occasions (11), though from more than twice as many Tests. Shakib also joined Muttiah Muralitharan, Rangana Herath and Dale Steyn as the only bowlers with Test five-fors against all nine possible Test opponents: next stops, Ireland and Afghanistan.Shakib finished with 5 for 68, and created a couple more chances besides. He had a fine partner in Mehidy, who collected 3 for 62, while Taijul was the only other wicket-taker: nine wickets fell to spin, and there was one run-out. Notably, while there was decent turn, there was also variable bounce – some kept low and others kicked sharply off the surface – and this too will play on Australia’s minds when they enter their second innings. Not that batting was impossible: Handscomb and Renshaw handled things well during their partnership, though in the end Handscomb’s habit of playing deep inside his crease brought him undone when on 33 he missed one from Taijul and was rapped on the pads dead in front. Renshaw likewise failed to capitalise on his solid start, caught at slip for 45 when he poked at a Shakib delivery shortly before lunch.Such was Australia’s state of mental fogginess that shortly after the resumption, Matthew Wade was needlessly lbw to Mehidy for 5. Australia had both reviews remaining and the two men in the middle – Wade and Glenn Maxwell – were the last pair before the bowlers. But Wade declined to ask for a review that would have saved him – replays showed the ball would have slid down leg side and Nigel Llong’s decision would have been overturned.Tamim Iqbal flicks one into the leg side•Getty Images

Maxwell made a confident 23 before he was lured out of his crease by Shakib, who turned the ball past the outside edge and Mushfiqur Rahim completed the stumping. Shakib might have had Agar stumped as well, but some exaggerated bounce off the pitch tricked Mushfiqur as it did the batsman. Another opportunity went begging when Cummins skied one towards cover off Shakib on 11 and Shafiul Islam dropped a straightforward chance.Cummins and Agar took those reprieves and used them to bat together for 25.2 overs, displaying impressive patience and technique that some of their top-order colleagues might learn from. For a while, it even looked like they might lift Australia close to Bangladesh’s total of 260. But on 25 from 89 balls, Cummins tried to drive Shakib through the off side and was bowled; Agar finished unbeaten on 41 off 97 when Josh Hazlewood was taken at short leg off Shakib for 5.Australia were not the only ones struggling: umpire Aleem Dar had two poor decisions overturned on review, first when he gave Renshaw lbw off a Mehidy delivery that would have sailed well over the top of the stumps, and then when he adjudged Cummins caught behind down leg off Shafiul Islam, when all the ball had touched was thigh pad. Both times, Dar self-admonished with face-palms. Australia, all out for 217, might have collectively done the same.

Tottenham: Spurs May Sell "Sensational" Player With Kane

BBC pundit Alan Hutton can't believe Tottenham Hotspur could also sell midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after some news this week.

Who will leave Spurs?

The most headline-grabbing exit of this summer window, and by some way, is the departure of star striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich – with renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano giving his famous "here we go" to the deal.

Tottenham reached an agreement with Bayern to sell their talismanic star for a fee around €100 million (£86m) plus an extra €20 million (£17.2m) in possible add-ons – leaving manager Ange Postecoglou with a gaping hole to fill up front in a worry for the new manager.

Kane had entered the final 12 months of his Spurs deal, giving chairman Daniel Levy and co a major decision to make in regard to his future, as he could have left for nothing next summer.

The 30-year-old joins Harry Winks and Lucas Moura as players out of the door at Tottenham, as the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga, Hugo Lloris and Hojbjerg remain linked with other clubs.

In the last week, there have been reports of the latter closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid, with Hojbjerg apparently set to leave despite being a regular starter under Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Denmark international could very well be next up after Kane if all goes to plan, and BBC pundit Hutton has suggested letting Hojbjerg go would be a mistake.

I think he has been one of the better players in recent seasons for Tottenham," said the former Spurs defender to Football Insider.

"There is a lot surrounding him at this moment in time about moving on.

I think they have got decent depth in the middle of the pitch but Ange [Postecoglou] would maybe look to bring somebody in. I think defensively is more where the problems lie.

I would like them to keep Hojbjerg and work out the defence. But if the player wants to leave Ange will not stand in his way and hopefully then they can get some money to reinvest into the squad.

How good is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg?

pierre-emile-hojbjerg

The 28-year-old was a mainstay for Spurs last season. Indeed, only Kane featured over more league minutes than Hojbjerg, with the midfielder also ranking among their best-performers per 90 according to WhoScored.

The former Southampton star chipped in with nine goal contributions from midfield, scoring four goals and assisting five others (WhoScored).

Members of the media called him "sensational" last campaign, while former Tottenham shot-stopper Paul Robinson heaped praise on Hojbjerg for his form at the end of 2022.

"I’ve been surprised by how much he has stepped up this year," said Robinson to Football Insider.

“I thought he was the one who would make way for Yves Bissouma. The club spent a lot of money on Bissouma. I think Hojbjerg recognised that and stepped up.

“He is playing to a level that we have never seen before. He is playing his best football in a Spurs shirt."

Alongside Kane, it appears Spurs would also lose a very capable player if a move to Atletico does go through.

Defending champions Gujarat start with nervy win

Jharkhand, meanwhile, battled it out to save their match against Rajasthan after following on

Parthiv Patel, the captain, and Chirag Gandhi – key to Gujarat’s Ranji Trophy triumph last season – held their composure to complete a nervy four-wicket win over Kerala in Nadiad. Chasing 105, Gujarat slumped to 80 for 5 before Parthiv, who walked in at No. 6, allayed fears of a shock loss by remaining unbeaten on 18. The spin pair of Akshay Chandran and Jalaj Saxena picked up two wickets each for Kerala. That Kerala couldn’t defend much more was due to the efforts of Siddarth Desai, who picked six wickets to dismantle them for 203 in the second innings. Piyush Chawla, turning out as a professional for Gujarat this season, took three wickets to take his match haul to 8 for 135. Priyank Panchal, the highest run-getter last season, started the new season with scores of 18 and 30.Kerala, who beat Jharkhand in their opener, now have one win in two matches. They next play Rajasthan at home. Gujarat, meanwhile, will clash against Jammu & Kashmir in the third round starting October 24.On his 23rd birthday, in just his second first-class match, Nazim Siddiqui scored his maiden first-class ton as Jharkhand put in a spirited showing to save the game following on. After Siddiqui’s effort, the baton was picked up by the more experienced Ishank Jaggi, who hit a 16th first-class ton – an unbeaten effort – to see his side through to safety. Rajasthan tried everything possible to take the game away – everyone except the keeper bowled in the innings – but could claim only five wickets in the 76.5 overs played on the day before a draw was declared.Siddiqui, the opener, was batting on 71 overnight and went on to score exactly 100 as his team battled. Briefly around the time when he was out – Jharkhand lost a wicket quickly on either side of his – Rajasthan must have maintained hope of taking full points from the game, but then they ran into Jaggi. He was well supported by the lower-middle order of Ishan Kishan and Kaushal Singh, both of whom batted out a sizeable chunk of balls for their 30-somethings to help carry their team to the finish. They got a point for their efforts, while Rajasthan got three for the first-innings lead they had secured.

Liverpool: Reds Given Major Update On Endo Pursuit

Liverpool could finally solve their midfield dilemma, according to reports, as Jurgen Klopp potentially welcomes a new defensive midfielder.

The Reds missed out on Moises Caicedo in incredibly public fashion after initially reportedly reaching an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion, before the new Chelsea man rejected them.

What's the latest on Wataru Endo to Liverpool?

As per Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are set to sign Stuttgart captain Wataru Endo for €18m (£15m) after a fast breakthrough in negotiations, with the midfielder's medical even booked already for this coming Thursday.

Endo's arrival follows the Premier League giants' failed pursuit of Caicedo, and potentially Romeo Lavia, who is also reportedly set to complete a move to Chelsea this summer, with the Japan star agreeing personal terms in a matter of hours.

Whether or not Endo is available for Jurgen Klopp's side in their clash against Bournemouth on Saturday remains to be seen, but they have, at least, got themselves an option in defensive midfield going forward.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Last time out against Chelsea, of course, it was Alexis Mac Allister who covered the role, playing out of position in the process. With Endo arriving, however, the Argentine can return to his far more natural advanced position.

Should Liverpool sign Wataru Endo?

On paper, going from Caicedo, a 21-year-old defensive midfielder who helped Brighton into the Europa League last season, to Endo, Stuttgart's 30-year-old captain, can seem a tad underwhelming. But, the Japan international is potentially one to keep an eye on.

Following the news of his reportedly imminent Reds move, Bundesliga experts were quick to praise the midfielder, including The Athletic's Seb Stafford-Boor, who said: "Endo is a good player. Great competitor and professional, too. He might not be the player Liverpool fans want, but he’s worth a chance. I’d actually be excited to see what he can achieve among that group of players."

Going onto describe the Stuttgart captain's strengths, Stafford-Boor said: "He is a ball-winner, but he’ll do a fine job protecting the defence. He can play too, though."

Meanwhile, Romano was also quick to have a positive opinion, saying after reporting the news: "And he’s an extremely underrated player, ask Stuttgart fans."

So, everything is pointing in a positive direction when it comes to the Japan midfielder, giving Liverpool fans plenty of hope that this arrival will play a major part in fixing their issues in the middle of the park.

The statistics only make for more encouraging reading, too. When compared to former Liverpool defensive midfielder Fabinho last season, according to FBref, Endo made more progressive carries, more blocks, and more clearances, whilst also making just 0.16 fewer progressive passes. For a reported €18m (£15m), numbers like that are a bargain.

Even better news for Klopp is the fact that the Stuttgart star can also play centre-back, therefore providing cover in that area of the German's squad, as well as in midfield.

After the difficulties of their Caicedo pursuit, Liverpool have emerged to sign an unlikely, but perhaps suitable, midfield option. The Reds will hope to get the deal wrapped up in time for the Bournemouth game, where Anfield could see its first glimpse of Endo in a Liverpool shirt.

New Zealand seek to banish decider jitters

India may have to rethink their six-bowler plan, and perhaps also the role of MS Dhoni, while New Zealand will hope they can deal with the heat and humidity of Thiruvananthapuram

The Preview by Shashank Kishore06-Nov-20171:43

Agarkar: India should pick Kuldeep Yadav

Big pictureRavi Shastri captained India the last time international cricket came to Thiruvananthapuram. It was a forgettable evening for India fans in football country as Phil Simmons and Gordon Greenidge orchestrated a nine-wicket West Indies win. Virat Kohli, who turned 29 on Sunday, wasn’t even born then. Now the Shastri-Kohli combine will have to plot hard, particularly on the batting front, to prevent New Zealand from winning their first-ever proper series, across formats, on Indian shores.New Zealand could claim the 2012 T20I series was theirs, but that was reduced to a one-off contest in Chennai because a cyclonic depression washed out the first game in Visakhapatnam. Now, there’s the small matter of hoping the receding monsoons, which have caused intermittent showers around Kerala, don’t cast a spell on Tuesday evening. In that 2012 Chennai game, MS Dhoni, faced with having to get 13 off the last over, couldn’t pull India past the mark. He was at his peak then. Perhaps not so now, as his struggle to bring out the big shots on demand has opened up debate over his batting position, and even his place in the side. Does he belong, or is it time to make way? A definitive answer is elusive just yet, but could be in the making, maybe even as early as Tuesday provided there’s a full game.In Delhi, New Zealand dropped three catches. It cost them the match and their No. 1 ranking. In Rajkot, India were the generous hosts, reprieving Colin Munro four times and watching him wallop his second T20I century of the year, which set the game up for spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner. In Thiruvananthapuram, where the weather is entirely different to the dry heat of Rajkot or the early winter chill of Delhi, New Zealand’s fitness will be tested by near-100% humidity. Are they hydrated enough to go one better after failing in successive deciders in India?Form guideIndia: LWLWW (completed matches, most recent first)
New Zealand: WLLWWIn the spotlightMS Dhoni scored 49 off 37 balls in Rajkot, and while the bare numbers look impressive, they don’t tell the whole story. Coming in at No. 6 with India needing 130 off 65 balls, he pushed and prodded his way to 26 off 26 before heaving a couple of big blows when the match was out of bounds. VVS Laxman, for one, believes it is time to look beyond Dhoni and groom a younger wicketkeeper-batsman in the shortest format. While his position isn’t under immediate threat yet, it remains to be seen if he will continue to bat at No. 6.Colin de Grandhomme came to India with the reputation of being a useful medium-pacer who can provide plenty of lower-order muscle. On this tour, save for one game in Pune where he made 41, he hasn’t managed to showcase his talent in either area. In the first T20I, he was out for a golden duck and conceded 34 off three wicketless overs. In Rajkot, Williamson preferred Munro’s medium-pace to de Grandhomme’s, which meant he only got the one over.BCCI

Team newsMohammed Siraj’s international initiation didn’t quite go to plan in Rajkot, where he conceded 53 in his four overs. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah conceding only 52 off their eight overs and with Hardik Pandya as a third seam option, India could look at replacing Siraj with Kuldeep Yadav, who hasn’t featured since the first ODI in Mumbai.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 MS Dhoni (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalTom Latham was left out of the Rajkot game despite having been one of New Zealand’s finds of the tour, despite having been given a new role in the middle order. While there may not be a reason to make a change to a winning XI, barring injury, they could consider bringing Latham back.New Zealand (probable): 1 Colin Munro, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Tom Bruce, 5 Glenn Phillips (wk), 6 Henry Nicholls, 7 Colin de Grandhomme, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Ish Sodhi, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Adam MilnePitch and conditionsA brand-new venue and a brand-new surface. The organisers claim scores of 180-plus were made in both innings of a warm-up game a fortnight ago. What teams will be mindful of, though, is the sapping heat and humidity, and the possibility of rain and a truncated game. The Kerala Cricket Association has invested in a modern drainage system and has three Super Soppers should it get to that.Stats and trivia New Zealand haven’t lost a bilateral T20I series of two or more matches in their last eight series. Sodhi has an economy of 5.66 against India, the best ever in T20Is among spinners who have bowled at least 10 overs against them. Three of India’s four failed T20I chases at home have come against New Zealand Greenfield Stadium becomes the 19th venue to host a T20I in IndiaQuotes”I never felt that kind of a pressure that we play five batsmen and Hardik Pandya. Whatever the situation or combination we are given, we have to go according to that.”
“It’s one exciting thing for us that we’ve taken them to the decider for the last two series now. They played well in Kanpur under a little bit of pressure as well so we still have to turn up tomorrow and play the best we can and perform our roles.”
