Arsenal: Arteta eyeing swoop for £91k-p/w "monster" who’s outscoring Saka

Arsenal have maintained their spot at the forefront of the Premier League after falling short in the title race last season against Manchester City, who leapfrogged Mikel Arteta's men at the business end to secure their third successive title en route to a seasonal European treble.

It was a gallant, inspiring, effort from a team that had failed to qualify for Champions League football for six successive seasons, but the sense of poignancy at failing to secure the trophy stung.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Arteta has ensured that the previous woes have been used to continue the increments made since his appointment in December 2019, and after nine league matches this season, the bid for a first league triumph in over two decades is very much on.

That being said, the club are prowling the market for a new, free-scoring centre-forward, and if rumours are to be believed, Napoli revelation Victor Osimhen is among the chief candidates.

What's the latest on Victor Osimhen to Arsenal?

Before the summer transfer window closed, Football Transfers reported that Arsenal had registered a concrete interest in Osimhen, having held preliminary talks after the Nigerian ace rejected a contract extension with the Serie A champions.

While he has been valued at a staggering £150m by the Italian outfit, the 24-year-old star's contract with Napoli expires in 2025, meaning 2024 is the crucial window of opportunity; Arsenal could seek to exploit a growing acceptance that his sale must be granted.

The Serie A champions could risk him running down his contract throughout the 2024/25 campaign before leaving for nothing in 2025 if they opt against cashing in on him during one of the next two transfer windows.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer insider Dean Jones penned his thoughts on the reported interest, highlighting the fact that while the allure of signing the striker is profound, the technicalities in the way make completing a deal challenging.

Jones said: "They play it down if you try to get any official quote on Arsenal going for Osimhen, but obviously if that time does come, they've got to be smart because Osimhen is valued at a ridiculous price and rightly so by Napoli.

"But also, there's going to be a huge wage and everything that comes in turn with that. So this is really ambitious if they do go for Osimhen, but if you're an Arsenal fan, this is the dream, this is the guy that can lead you properly towards title talk and properly into the Champions League conversation."

Are Arsenal hoping to sign Ivan Toney?

Given the Gunners' £105m acquisition of Declan Rice this summer, there is a discernible willingness from the powers that be to strengthen in accordance with Arteta's vision, stemming from the fantastic strides taken under the Spanish manager's tutelage.

Rice was the tailor-made midfield signing required to upgrade on the team, and now swooping for a new, prolific forward appears to be the primary port of call on the transfer front, and while Osimhen is the coveted name, the difficulties surrounding a deal could prompt the Emirates side to further their interest in Brentford's Ivan Toney.

One of England's most impressive strikers over the past few years, Toney is currently serving a lengthy suspension following a breach of betting regulations. Enforced in May, the 27-year-old will not return to competitive football until January 16, 2024.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal – alongside Chelsea – are informed on Toney's situation as the England international targets a transfer this winter, though Thomas Frank's Bees will demand a ballpark "£60-65m" for his sale.

There would be worse ways for the Gunners to splash their cash, though, with Toney hailed for his "remarkable" qualities by his manager.

Since Brentford achieved promotion from the Championship in 2021 – with Toney leading the line and posting 33 goals and ten assists – he has scored 32 goals and supplied nine assists across 66 Premier League appearances, with his commanding presence in the final third exactly what Arsenal need as a counterweight to Gabriel Jesus' creative role.

The £20k-per-week ace would prosper supplemented by the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, and while Osimhen is likely rivalled only by Manchester City's Erling Haaland in terms of cutting edge in front of goal right now, Toney would not be a bad fallback option. Not one bit.

How good is Victor Osimhen?

Described as a "monster" for his exploits by ESPN journalist Colin Udoh, Osimhen was the centrepiece of Napoli's sensational Scudetto triumph last season, winning the Serie A title with 90 points, 16 points ahead of second-placed Lazio.

I Partenopei were positively electric in their forward efforts, with the £91k-per-week sensation plundering a whopping 31 goals and five assists from 39 matches across all competitions.

These statistics show that the talented number nine proved himself to be a reliable goalscoring option for his team as part of a title success, which could make him the dream signing for Arsenal as they eye a title of their own.

This season, while Napoli have not been quite so imperious so far, Osimhen has retained his innate predatory sense and has scored six times from eight Serie A outings.

His rate of scoring is exactly what the Gunners need, with the prodigious Saka in stunning form this season but his tally of five is still bettered by Osimhen's six.

Saka, who has been praised as a "ruthless" presence in front of goal by his England manager, Gareth Southgate, is also one of the Premier League's most creative forces, ranking among the top 12% of positional peers for assists per 90.

As per FBref, the 6 foot Naples sharpshooter ranks among the top 3% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues and European competitions over the past year for non-penalty goals, the top 1% for total shots taken, and the top 1% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, making him indisputably one of the finest finishers in the business.

Should Arsenal fail to sign Osimhen at some point over the coming transfer windows remains to be seen, but the fact that the London giants are in such a good position that falling back on players such as Toney is within the realm of possibility illustrates just how emphatic the ascent to prominence once more has been.

That being said, the work is certainly not done and Arteta's renaissance will only be etched into history as an unmitigated success should one of the most coveted prizes be brought back to the Emirates.

With Osimhen serving as the arrowhead, there is every chance that the years still to come will be filled with prosperity and silver-laden success.

Therefore, the Gunners must reignite their interest in the Napoli star and ditch any plans they have to swoop for Toney ahead of the January transfer window.

Cheteshwar Pujara secures India a priceless lead as Moeen Ali claims five for England

Pujara first laid India’s foundations, then shored up the super-structure, with a superb unbeaten 132

The Report by Andrew Miller31-Aug-2018England 6 for 0 and 246 (Curran 78) trail India 273 (Pujara 132*, Moeen 5-63) by 21 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsWhen Cheteshwar Pujara was scratching around for form during his early-season stint with Yorkshire, amassing 172 runs at 14.33 in six County Championship outings, it might as well have been a down-payment for today’s moment of fufillment at the Ageas Bowl.In batting for five minutes shy of six hours to make his first Test century in England, and only his second outside of Asia in a 61-Test career, Pujara first laid the foundations, then shored up the super-structure in partnership with an unexpectedly doughty tail, to secure a priceless lead of 27 with a superb unbeaten 132.It was the innings of a true Test-match No.3 – a player with enough faith in his own game to let the match come to him, and block out all competing emotions; elation as he and Virat Kohli eased into a 92-run stand for the third wicket that, at 142 for 2, had looked set to secure a hefty first-innings advantage, and despair, as Moeen Ali reprised his feat on this very ground in 2014, with a brisk five-wicket haul that rattled through the lower middle-order either side of tea.By the close, England had inched their way to 6 for 0 in four taxing overs, with Keaton Jennings escaping his pair with a nudge for four off the hip against Jasprit Bumrah. But, as Pujara’s efforts had amply demonstrated on a pitch that retains good carry for the quicks and is showing increasing purchase for the spinners, application of the sort that England’s batsmen had so manifestly lacked first-time around will be required over the weekend if they are to turn a battling day’s work into an opportunity to arrest their alarming mid-series slump. In terms of sheer skill, England’s bowlers paled compared to India’s peerless display of swing and seam on the first day. But they lacked little in application from first ball to last. Stuart Broad bashed his way through the openers in a deck-hitting morning spell, before Sam Curran and latterly Ben Stokes – brought into the attack after even Jennings amid concerns about his knee injury – found sharp bend through the air to dislodge, respectively, Kohli for a fluent 46, then Ajinkya Rahane for 11. Rahane never got going before Stokes nailed him on the knee-roll – a plumb lbw that came excruciatingly close to being denied by the most marginal front-foot call imaginable.1:18

Playing county cricket gave me confidence – Moeen

James Anderson, however, found none of the magic that Bumrah in particular had produced for India, and for much of the day his lack of penetration appeared symptomatic of an England side who had relinquished the right to dictate terms with their flaccid first-innings batting. And yet, he gave nothing away as usual, not least against the strokeless Rishabh Pant, whose 29-ball duck was India’s joint-third-slowest in Test history, and marked the moment at which the innings began to tilt back in England’s favour. It was Moeen who ended Pant’s miserable stay, pinning him on the pad as he returned to the attack in the final over before tea, and extracting a leg-stump lbw from umpire Oxenford. Twenty minutes, and six deliveries later, Moeen struck again as Hardik Pandya was beaten in flight as he clipped airily to short midwicket for 4, and all of a sudden Moeen had four for eight in 16 balls when Ashwin – dragging a reverse-sweep onto his timbers – and Mohammad Shami – pinged through the gate first ball – fell to consecutive deliveries. But throughout it all, Pujara simply leant on his bat at the non-striker’s end and trusted himself to steady the innings in his own good time. He had brought up his first fifty in 98 balls, taking 36 deliveries to drill his first boundary through the covers off Curran when Kohli, at the other end, had needed just two to do likewise against Broad, and he promptly marked the achievement by wearing a fierce bouncer from Stokes on the forehead.Anderson too, rattled Pujara’s lid on 78 – moments after the fall of India’s eighth wicket – but he continued undaunted, changing his tone subtly to shield the No.10 Ishant Sharma from pace and spin alike, while stepping out of his crease to dump Moeen for a brace of boundaries through backward point and cow corner. England opted for a twin-spin response, with Rashid returning to the fray after twice dismissing Ishant in the opening Test at Edgbaston. This time, however, his long levers proved sufficient to eke out a vital 14 from 27 balls, which was finally ended as Moeen tweaked one into his inside-edge for Alastair Cook at short leg to swallow a looping chance. At 227 for 9, England were back on course for a slender lead. But Bumrah, uncomfortable against the quicks at Trent Bridge, seemed emboldened by the challenge of guiding his senior partner to a priceless century and beyond. Pujara’s moment finally arrived from his 210th delivery, an uncharacteristic but utterly effective wipe into no-man’s land at long-on off Moeen, and as the India balcony rose in acclaim, he set himself to restore the advantage that ought to have been pre-ordained given the discipline he had put into his stay.India’s 46-run stand for the tenth wicket would prove to be second only to the Kohli-Pujara alliance, and like all the best tail-end partnerships, it sucked the wind clean out of England’s sails. Pujara combined a judicious management of the strike with a determined pillaging of runs where the opportunity arose, the best of which were a brace of cleanly flogged fours off Stuart Broad through the covers and long-on.Broad, however, eventually ended the fun with his third scalp of the innings, as Bumrah fenced a lifter to Cook at first slip for 6, but the backslaps that greeted Pujara as he crossed the boundary rope told a tale. India believe they are right back in this series, and though they face the prospect of batting last on a pitch that won’t get any easier for batting, particularly if England’s twin spinners find increasing assistance as the weekend wears on, they also have in their ranks a player who has mastered the conditions like no-one else on either side.

Ten Hag must now bench Man Utd’s 2/10 flop

There are a number of major factors behind Manchester United's fall in recent seasons that are outside of Erik ten Hag's control, such as the noise around Sir Jim Ratcliffe's proposed purchase of a 25% stake in the club as well as the ill-fated number of injuries in the squad.

However, one area that Ten Hag can be criticised for is his recruitment at Old Trafford, having spent over £400m since the 2022 summer transfer window to bring 16 new players to the club, averaging £35m per deal, according to Transfermarkt.

These expensive acquisitions are hardly setting the world alight and one recent arrival in particular is struggling to adapt to life in English football, having become the club's second most expensive purchase of all time.

Antony over Sancho

Ten Hag knew Antony from his time in Amsterdam coaching Ajax. The duo won two Eredivisie titles together before the Dutch coach headed for Old Trafford in 2022. One of his first signings as manager of the Red Devils was to bring his Brazilian star with him to the Theatre of Dreams for a reported £82m, the most expensive sale in the history of football in The Netherlands.

Antony hit the ground running on his debut, scoring against Arsenal as the Red Devils picked up a valuable 3-1 win. This was the start of a solid individual campaign for the winger who managed to score eight goals and register three assists in all competitions in his first season with United.

Unfortunately for the player and manager, Antony has been unable to get going this season and has come under fire for some of his performances.

Club legend Gary Neville even labelled Antony as "embarrassing" during the team's dismal derby defeat against Manchester City over a week ago.

Antony

There were even reports that Jadon Sancho grew frustrated with Antony being picked in the starting lineup in the build-up to his recent falling out with ten Hag. But has Antony been as bad as has been made out?

Antony's stats this season

Manchester United came away with a huge 1-0 win over Fulham at the weekend to stay in the race for top four. The goal came late in the game through a cracking Bruno Fernandes strike after some hard work from Facundo Pellistri to force Joao Palhinha to scuff his clearance, handing the ball straight to the United skipper at the edge of the penalty area.

It was Pellistri who had come on for Antony with a half-hour to go after the Brazil international failed to have a single shot on goal or create any chances at Craven Cottage. Furthermore, the 23-year-old lost possession ten times in 63 minutes, according to Sofascore. In the Manchester Evening News' player ratings after the game, Samuel Luckhurst even put Antony down as having a 2/10 display. Damning indeed.

In 32 minutes, Pellistri managed to get an assist, register a shot on target and not lose the ball once, as per FotMob, playing an integral part in the side's late victory. In the Premier League this season, Pellistri is averaging an xG of 0.38 per 90 compared to Alejandro Garnacho's 0.19 xG per 90 and Antony's lowly 0.15 xG per 90.

Of the three right-wingers, Antony boasts the highest expected assists (xA) per 90 with 0.13 per 90 while Pellistri and Garnacho are both locked on 0.08 xA per 90. However, Pellistri is the only one with an assist to his name despite making three fewer appearances, according to FBref.

Bruno Fernandes and Facundo Pellistri

Garnacho is far more efficient at carrying the ball up the pitch than his counterparts and is averaging 7.84 progressive carries per 90 this season to Antony's 3.65 per 90 and Pellistri's 3.08 per 90. Meanwhile, Pellistri receives the ball in the most advanced positions, averaging 16.2 progressive passes received per 90 to Antony's 13.3 per 90 and Garnacho's 12.2 per 90.

The only area that Antony stands out from Pellistri and Garnacho is in his tackling, given that he is quite a tenacious character on the pitch if nothing else. However, it may be time for Pellistri or Garnacho to claim their starting spot in the team over the struggling star who is on £200k-per-week.

Heavy rain, wet outfield forces abandonment

Sri Lanka’s monsoon season was the only winner in Dambulla as the first ODI was abandoned after just 15 overs of play

The Report by Alan Gardner10-Oct-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSri Lanka’s monsoon season was the only winner in Dambulla as the first ODI was abandoned after just 15 overs of play. England had reached 92 for 2 after being asked to bat, but a heavy storm swept in and despite the entire playing surface being covered, the umpires eventually deemed a wet outfield unsuitable for a shortened game. The groundstaff worked hard to mop up, with persistent rainfall having left several inches of standing water on the covers. However, after a delay of more than four-and-a-half hours, the captain shook hands on the decision to call things off.”It was frustrating, especially as the umpires did call for the covers before the rain arrived, because when it rains here it rains for hours,” England captain, Eoin Morgan said. “They did their best in that regard. Unfortunately when they were taking the covers off there was some overflow, and so there were three or four areas of concern that were very muddy. I think when it gets to that stage, player safety is paramount.”The abandonment meant Olly Stone’s England debut amounted to little more than going through the warm-up and watching his team-mates bat. Stone was picked in the squad as cover for Liam Plunkett, whose wedding clashed with the first part of the tour, and he went straight into the side – but will now have to wait to make an impact.Of Stone’s inclusion, Morgan said: “The thinking behind that was Olly offers something different. He bowls with a bit more pace than the guys we have currently. He’s a like-for-like replacement in the squad for Liam Plunkett. If Liam was here today he would have played the very same role. To change a game, if it’s not mystery spin in the middle overs, it’s with extra pace.”After Sri Lanka had won the toss and chosen to bowl in the first ODI of five, newly instated captain Dinesh Chandimal said he was hoping for a “little bit of moisture in the wicket” to help his bowlers – but rather a lot of moisture was the eventual problem. Both teams will hope for better weather in Dambulla for the second game on Saturday.Joe Root heads off as the covers come on•AFP

Before the rain arrived, at around 3.40pm local time, England had made a steady start to their innings. The opening stand reached 49 at just over a run a ball when Jonny Bairstow got a thin edge behind off Nuwan Pradeep, and Jason Roy fell in the following over, skewing an ugly heave at Akila Dananjaya high towards mid-off.The third-wicket pairing of Joe Root and Morgan did not take too much time over consolidating, pushing the score on to 92 for 2 at the drinks break, but with dark clouds beginning to hove into view, the groundstaff made their move.England had been short of match practice in the lead-up to the series, with their first warm-up match affected by rain and bad light and the second washed out entirely. After a second consecutive abandonment, only the top four of Roy, Bairstow, Morgan and Root have had any competitive time in the middle.”I remember coming here in 2014 a little bit later [during November-December], but I do remember the forecast being the same every day, and we managed to miss the rain last time,” Morgan said.”It was quite competitive in the first 15 overs. The game was just starting to unfold. They took two wickets, and me and Root had just started to get something going, but I don’t think I could predict what would have happened from there.”

Spurs now weighing January bid for "really fast" van de Ven alternative

Tottenham Hotspur are weighing a winter move for one "really fast" Premier League defender amid injury concerns surrounding Micky van de Ven.

Van de Ven's hamstring woes

Spurs' 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday was the source of bitter disappointment, but not because of the result.

While manager Ange Postecoglou's early-season unbeaten streak came to an unceremonious end, star centre-back van de Ven handed the Australian his biggest worry by far after being forced off with a hamstring injury.

The Dutchman barely managed to limp off the field, needing assistance by Spurs medical staff in a real concern. Tottenham's summer signing has been imperious so far this season, forming a fantastic partnership with Cristian Romero at the heart of Postecoglou's defence.

Reports in the last two days have now suggested that van de Ven won't need surgery on the issue, which will come as a much-needed boost for Spurs, but it is still unclear exactly how long he'll be out for.

cristian-romero-micky-van-de-ven-spurs-opinion

We'll know more tomorrow when Postecoglou addresses the media before Tottenham's Premier League encounter against Wolves this weekend, but in the mean time, new sporting director Johan Lange has reportedly been considering solutions in the transfer market.

Tottenham considering Godfrey move

The Lilywhites are now looking at alternative options for January, with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly and Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah among the names linked recently.

According to 90min, sharing a transfer update this week, Spurs could now move for Everton ace Ben Godfrey, who has found game time difficult to come by at Goodison Park.

The Englishman was once becoming a regular under Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, even being included in England's provisional squad for Euro 2021.

Everton's Ben Godfrey

However, he has since fallen down the pecking order, and it is believed he wishes to reignite his faltering career. Everton, for their part, are open to doing business with interested sides as the January window looms.

Alongside Spurs, Newcastle and other Premier League sides are showing an interest in the 25-year-old, who has been revered for his speed by former teammates.

Godfrey's "rapid" speed can replace van de Ven

Jonjoe Kenny, who now plies his trade for Hertha Berlin in Germany, once called Godfrey a "really fast" and "rapid" player.

“Ben Godfrey catches pigeons, simple as," said the former Everton defender in 2021.

“But when Ben gets going he’s rapid so I don’t know if they have a race or would have a race but yeah, it’s close between them two. Dominic is really quick too but I’d say Ben.”

Alongside Kenny, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has previously heralded Godfrey as a player, having called him "really good" in 2020 during the defender's Norwich City days.

“I said in the past that we are looking for a centre-back because we are short there," said Ancelotti on Godfrey to talkSPORT.

"He is a really good centre-back, but he is at this moment playing for Norwich, so I can’t say more."

Given Godfrey's pace, which is crucial for a centre-back in Postecoglou's high line, he could actually be an excellent candidate to come as a van de Ven alternative.
