Sir Jim Ratcliffe in pole position to sign "strong" new player for Man Utd

After winning the Manager of the Month award, things were looking up for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, who had also just seen Harry Maguire win the Premier League's Player of the Month award. Any celebrations were swiftly put to an end in their last outing at Old Trafford, however, as Bournemouth dispatched of the Red Devils to win 3-0 on Saturday. In a stark reminder of just where United are currently at, the severity of Ten Hag's mounting problems was laid bare for all to see.

The January transfer window now seems crucial for any hope left in Manchester United's Premier League campaign, with reports suggesting that the Red Devils have moved into pole position for one particular target, who could help turn their fortunes around.

Man Utd transfer news

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival edges ever closer, United could be looking ahead to the January transfer window, where they may start to solve Ten Hag's problems. The Dutchman's side have endured a campaign to forget so far and sit outside of the Premier League's top four and on the brink of a Champions League exit in Group A. It's clear that they need reinforcements and one particular target could be part of those much-needed additions in January in what could be Ratcliffe's first new signing.

Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Manchester United are now in pole position to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from OGC Nice in January ahead of Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur after a development in the last 48 hours. Those at Old Trafford will reportedly look to use Ratcliffe's ownership links with the Ligue 1 club to accelerate the deal, as Ten Hag seeks a solution to his defensive woes. According to The Mirror, Nice currently value Todibo at £40m, meaning that any deal won't be cheap in the winter window if United want to land the Frenchman's signature.

"Very strong" Todibo could be Man Utd's best centre-back

After Manchester United's 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth, it's no surprise that the Red Devils are reportedly looking to accelerate a deal to sign Todibo, possibly as early as January. If they stand any chance of qualifying for a place in Europe, even if it's not the Champions League, then welcoming an upgrade on the likes of Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane could be crucial. Todibo's stats show that he could quickly become Ten Hag's best option in central defence if he made the move in January.

Those impressive numbers have resulted in high praise for Todibo, including from Nice teammate and veteran defender Dante, who said via Football Transfers:

“Of course, we would like Todibo to stay. But it can be complicated. We have to wait to see who will want to buy him and if everyone finds himself there. He is a leader, a very strong player mentally, he has improved a lot and he is ready to reach the very top level."

Tottenham handed Todibo transfer boost as they look to scupper Tuchel

Tottenham have been handed a transfer boost with one club "prepared" to entertain selling their star to Spurs, despite interest from Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich.

Postecoglou wants new centre-back at Tottenham

Lilywhites manager Ange Postecoglou is currently short of central defensive options behind his usual starting eleven, with Micky van de Ven's hamstring injury really weakening them in November.

The Dutchman was hauled off in a 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea, which ended their early-season unbeaten streak, and Cristian Romero's suspension certainly didn't help matters at the time.

The Blues could green-light his sale this winter.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 23, 2023

At one stage, Postecoglou was forced to play both Emerson Royal and Ben Davies as a makeshift centre-back pairing, but Romero's return to action has put an end to that drastic measure.

Davies has partnered the Argentine to great effect in recent weeks, for the most part, though Postecoglou has still been fairly adamant that Spurs should sign a new centre-back in January.

"We let Davinson Sanchez go after the window closed. We kind of knew we were taking a bit of a risk; we couldn't get the extra centre-back that we were trying to get in, and for the early part of the year that was fine," said Postecoglou to Sky on Tottenham's defensive conundrum.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

"But once we lost Micky [van de Ven], and Eric Dier's had some issues as well, we don't have another centre-back. Young Ash Phillips had just joined the club, so it's fair to say that we can't run the risk of that happening again, so that's obviously a priority for us in January.

"But again, we've got to get the right person. It's not just about bringing another body in, it's about getting the right one in and hopefully that'll happen."

The Lilywhites, according to reports in the last week, appear to have identified a top candidate in Nice star Jean-Clair Todibo.

The 23-year-old's excellent campaign in France has attracted attention from all over Europe, including from Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern.

Nice "prepared" to sell Todibo to Spurs

As per The Evening Standard, Spurs have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Todibo as we approach January.

The outlet, and reliable journalist Dan Kilpatrick, claim Nice are "prepared" to sell Todibo to Spurs despite incoming Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratfcliffe's ties to the Ligue 1 side.

Nice defenderJean-Clair Todibo.

Ratcliffe is about to take control of football operations at Man United, who are also chasing the France international, but the billionaire's share in Nice won't stop Tottenham from making a deal if they meet his asking price.

Todibo is also a target for Tuchel's Bayern, United, Liverpool, and AC Milan next month, but it is Spurs who making the first moves and have "entered" talks.

The centre-back is a real one to watch considering he could leave for just £35 million, with former Brazil star Dante calling his teammate a "leader" and "very strong" player.

"Of course, we would like Todibo to stay," said Dante at a recent press conference.

"But it can be complicated. We have to wait to see who will want to buy him and if everyone finds himself there. He is a leader, a very strong player mentally, he has improved a lot and he is ready to reach the very top level."

Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler on England rescue mission

England recover in dramatic late session against West Indies thanks to Buttler and Stokes stand

The Report by Valkerie Baynes09-Feb-2019

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler both made fifties in a vital stand•Associated Press

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsUnbeaten half-centuries from Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler in a dramatic late session salvaged England’s first innings on the opening day of the third and final Test against West Indies at St Lucia.Their unbroken 124-run partnership – England’s highest this series – made the task of saving their team’s batting blushes look like turning into an all-out rescue mission, particularly when Stokes’ dismissal to what appeared to be a sharp caught-and-bowled by Alzarri Joseph was overturned after the batsman had returned to the changing room because the delivery was deemed a no-ball, with replays showing Joseph had overstepped.By stumps, Stokes and Buttler had steered England to 231 for 4 after they had fallen to a perilous 107 for 4 shortly before tea.In contrast to England’s struggling top order, Stokes and Buttler batted with confidence, picking up the run rate and finally questioning West Indies’ decision to put the tourists in upon winning the toss. They were brought together by Joe Root’s soft dismissal, nicking a Joseph short ball to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich.England had waited until the last possible moment to confirm Stokes’ involvement in the match after he pulled up with a bruised heel following the second Test but he showed no signs of the injury during his knock.Stokes was not without luck, however. Shortly after the tea break, on 17, he survived when West Indies reviewed a not-out decision they believed should have been given lbw to Keemo Paul, only to see the DRS uphold the umpire’s original call.Stokes and Buttler withstood a testing spell from Shannon Gabriel and Stokes brought up his half-century with a boundary off Roston Chase. Stokes had not added to his score of 52 when he tested Joseph’s reflexes, sending a pull shot back to the bowler at thigh height for what appeared to be a clever take, only to be called back in a stunning reprieve when the no-ball was discovered, according to a 2017 change in the Laws allowing the batsman to be recalled after leaving the field on the “misaprehension of being out”.England lost three wickets between lunch and tea to be 114 for 4 at the break. Root’s dismissal was his third in a row at the hands of Joseph, with the England captain having scored 4, 22, 7, 7, and 15 in this series.Rory Burns’ steady 29 off 103 balls looked promising, but then England lost 2 for 0 in six deliveries, thanks largely to some excellent bowling from young allrounder Paul, playing just his third Test. Before lunch, Paul had claimed the wicket of under-pressure opener Keaton Jennings to send England to the break on a hard-working 46 for 1. Joe Denly survived a scare, following a big appeal for caught behind off the bowling of Gabriel. When the batsman was adjudged not out, West Indies called a review, which revealed that while the ball had struck Denly on the glove, he had taken his hand off the bat.Resuming unbeaten on 4, Denly began to look as though he might settle, though not always comfortably. His fully outstretched waft at a wide Kemar Roach delivery went to the boundary but brought back memories of his dismissal on debut in Antigua, a toe-ended cut shot that was caught behind. But Denly and Burns dug in, albeit slowly, with Burns adding just two runs in the space of six overs after lunch as Denly built his innings. Then Paul struck. Replacing suspended captain Jason Holder in the West Indies’ team, 20-year-old Paul trapped Burns lbw, but it took a review to secure the dismissal. After the batsman was adjudged not out, the DRS showed the ball was clearly hitting middle stump and England were 69 for 2. Just six balls later and without a run being added, Gabriel was rewarded for some hard toil when he had Denly out lbw, England losing a review this time.Talk before the match had centred on England’s selection, with Jennings returned to the top of the order after being axed for the second Test, and Denly moving down to No.3. After a sedate opening by both sides in which the only real excitement came as Roach tempted a thick edge off Jennings, which dropped just short of John Campbell in the slips, rain stopped play for half an hour.At the resumption, Roach and Jennings were the protagonists again as the match threatened to spring to life on a pitch offering far less spice than in Antigua. Roach made a hearty appeal for lbw with Jennings on 3 but, presumably having heard two noises, his team-mates were not as enthused. Replays suggested that the ball hit the front and back pads, however, and not the bat, and would have gone on to hit leg stump. Two balls later, Jennings edged Roach straight to third slip, but Chase spilled a regulation catch and the ball raced away to the boundary.Jennings had exhausted his chances by the time Paul came into the attack immediately after drinks. With his first delivery, Paul had Jennings out to a tame catch by Darren Bravo at first slip, the batsman having scored just 8 from 43 balls in a less-than-convincing return to the team.

Duanne Olivier 'turned down two-year contract' to go Kolpak, say CSA

Fast bowler attracts board’s ire after becoming 43rd South Africa cricketer to take the Kolpak route

Duanne Olivier was offered a two-year contract as an incentive to stay in South Africa ahead of his decision to take up a Kolpak deal with Yorkshire, Cricket South Africa has revealed after news broke of Olivier’s decision to effectively end his international career.Olivier was upgraded to a national contract during the current home season, in which he played all five home Tests against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and was also trialled in the ODI side, and was offered a contract that would have kept him in the national frame until the end of the 2020-21 season. In a post on Instagram, Olivier wrote that the decision to turn his back on South Africa was “possibly the most difficult … I’ll ever have to make”, adding that he was aware that CSA “might not understand or agree” with his decision.Sure enough, CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe was strongly critical of the decision. “We find it extremely disappointing that Duanne has taken this step after all the opportunities we have given him, particularly over the past season and going forward, to live his dream of being an international cricketer,” Moroe said.”He was upgraded to a national contract during the current season on the strength of his outstanding performances in our Test squad and we offered him a two-year contract which would have given him financial security through to the end of the 2020-21 season.”Moroe also suggested that the trend of cricketers putting domestic leagues and franchise cricket ahead of national duty was “not good news for the global game”. Forty-two South African cricketers have now opted for Kolpak deals since left-arm spinner Claude Henderson became the first to take that route back in 2004.”If one looks at the bigger picture this is not good news for the global game either that a player who has just broken into the top 20 on the ICC Test match bowling rankings for the first time should opt effectively to bring down the curtain on his international career in favour of playing only in domestic leagues,” said Moroe, adding that Olivier was “not short of opportunity” after the cricket he played this summer.South Africa head coach Ottis Gibson echoed Moroe’s disappointment. “We are naturally disappointed with Duanne’s decision to sign a Kolpak contract,” he said. “He has been a key feature for us this summer and was without a doubt one of our standout performers.”We held several meetings with him regarding his future with the Proteas throughout the summer and even offered him a two-year contract. To see him cut short a promising international career is disappointing. Ultimately, it was a decision we could not control despite our best efforts.”CSA expects to announce the contracted South Africa men’s and women’s squads for the next 12 months later this week.
