West Ham make contact to sign new January target in rising star striker

West Ham United's search for a new striker has taken another twist as they now make a January move for Besiktas "rising star" Semih Kilicsoy.

Moyes working hard to sign new striker for West Ham

Injuries to Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta have left manager David Moyes with a serious lack of creative attacking options, with star summer signing Mohammed Kudus also at the Africa Cup of Nations.

While West Ham are hopeful that Bowen could be back from injury very soon, Moyes will still be minus an in-form natural striker, with the out-of-favour Danny Ings not exactly pulling up trees since his arrival from Aston Villa.

Recent reports claim that Moyes is personally working overtime to sign a striker for West Ham before the deadline, with talks apparently held for both Santiago Gimenez of Feyenoord and Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy (Pete O'Rourke).

“I don't think David has had an out-and-out number nine, with Antonio used wide left and wide, right, while Bowen has cut inside from that wide right position,” said former West Ham boss Alan Curblishley, who urged the club to bring in a new centre-forward this month.

“They are yet to have an out-and-out centre forward that has come in and taken the mantle, so I think that’s their big priority, but that’s also where you spend the big money.

“They are stocked up very well in all the other positions, that just seems to be the main one which is lacking.”

Bowen has thrived as a makeshift centre-forward option, with Kudus also able to play the role, but both of their recent absences are exposing Moyes' serious lack of alternatives. Just one or two injuries can cripple West Ham's squad going forward, and if they're to qualify for Europe yet again, that is something Moyes and technical director Tim Steidten seriously need to rectify. If there is one thing elite sides must possess, it is strength in depth.

West Ham make contact to sign Kilicsoy

Supporters will be eager to hear who West Ham can bring in to shore up their attacking numbers, and alongside the aforementioned stars, a slightly lesser-known target has emerged.

According to Turkish football.com, West Ham have now made an approach to sign "rising star" striker Kilicsoy. The 18-year-old has burst onto the scene in Turkey this season, netting five goals in his last eight league appearances for Besiktas.

David Moyes for West Ham.

This has caught the eye of Steidten and co, with an enquiry being made over Kilicsoy's availability. The Irons have been extensively scouting Besiktas' teenage sensation, but are yet to make a formal offer despite expressing their real interest.

Kilicsoy, as per this report, is being tipped for Vincenzo Montella's Turkey national team squad if he can keep this hot streak of form going. There is no mention of how much Besiktas could charge for their starlet, but you can't imagine they'll let him go on the cheap.

Reporter shares Leeds transfer update as 49ers work on three defender deals

Leeds haven't signed any new players so far this month, but Daniel Farke will need a full-back through the door at Elland Road by the time the transfer window shuts on 1 February. He's already lost two from his squad this month, having sent Djed Spence back to Tottenham halfway through what was supposed to be a season-long loan spell and then allowed Luke Ayling to join Middlesbrough on a temporary deal.

The Championship promotion-chasers have subsequently been assessing multiple targets, with Tottenham's Ben Davies among those admired. Elsewhere, there's interest in West Ham's Ben Johnson, and another candidate in Burnley's Connor Roberts is apparently open to joining.

Leeds now "working on" three deals at once

Speaking to GiveMeSport at the weekend, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Leeds are actively working on a deal for Davies, but still investing time into trying to sign Johnson and Roberts. Farke feels that the Spurs man could be a "two-for-one" addition due to his versatility, but is keeping his options open by pursuing two more defenders in tandem. There could, then, be a surge of activity in West Yorkshire before the window is out.

"I think that Leeds are keeping across Ben Davies because, if Tottenham are to make some changes in their squad, he might be the one that becomes available.

"The beauty of Davies is that he can play at left-back and centre-back. Given the need to strengthen, and how little time there is left in the window, Daniel Farke would like versatile players. He feels like Davies – or equivalents to Davies – could almost be seen as a two-for-one signing. Versatile players are going to be given preference.

"Davies, Ben Johnson and Connor Roberts are the names that Leeds are working on at the moment. It really wouldn't surprise me if they are active and they get some joy over the course of the next two weeks."

Davies would be a standout coup

Of the three players mentioned, it's surely Davies who would generate the most excitement among the fanbase if he landed at Leeds before the end of the month. With nearly 300 Premier League games (293 to be precise) and 327 appearances for Spurs under his belt, this is a player with real pedigree.

And it's not like he's a fading force either. Davies has started ten of Tottenham's 21 Premier League matches so far this season, but the hope will be that he's made available for transfer following the arrival of Radu Dragusin from Genoa.

In addition to his domestic experience, Davies has played 27 games in the Champions League, including six starts on Spurs' run to the 2018/19 final, and also been capped 85 times for Wales, which ranks him inside the top 10 all time. The table below shows the advantage he over holds Johnson and Roberts when it comes to experience.

A player like this could make a huge difference in Leeds' push for promotion, with the Whites still in with a real chance of going up automatically after closing the gap on 2nd to just four points with a run of three straight wins.

Of course, even if Spurs greenlight a move, Davies would still have to be persuaded to drop a level to the second tier, but perhaps his international teammates Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Dan James can play a big part in that.

Cool West Indies come calling amid South Africa's perfect storm

The dreaded World Cup knockouts have come early for injury-hit South Africa who might need to win their remaining six matches to keep their semi-final hopes alive

The Preview by Liam Brickhill09-Jun-2019Big PictureWhat else could possibly go wrong for South Africa? A month ago, they were hiking up Table Mountain together as part of their pre-tournament team building, the sun on their backs in one of the most beautiful corners of the world, the World Cup a glittering dream ahead of them. Full of excitement and potential. The reality has been somewhat more harsh and the pointy end of the tournament has come right at the beginning for them. Losing three matches in a row is bad enough, but they’ve also said a tearful goodbye to Dale Steyn, and seen Lungi Ngidi sidelined by injury. They are dealing with the disruptive complexities of AB de Villiers’ 11th hour comeback attempt, in the full glare of the public, in the middle of a World Cup. And now a team that hates must-win knockout games has, essentially, six of them in a row. It’s a perfect storm.West Indies, meanwhile, are not fussed. You might even say they were a little too blasé in their efforts after they let Australia off the hook at Trent Bridge. But they at least have points on the board, and a healthy dollop of confidence, after the demolition of Pakistan that kick-started their campaign. The biggest story out of their camp in the last week – apart from the absorbing theatre of Chris Gayle’s battle against Starc, Gaffaney and the DRS – has been their opening bowler’s salute celebration going viral IRL. What fun! The most chilled-out team at this tournament is about to meet a side that would be forgiven for freaking out right about now, and whatever the result, this contest is likely to make for compelling viewing.”Score more runs,” was the succinctly obvious remedy offered by Chris Morris after the defeat to India on Wednesday, and South Africa have indeed been let down by their batting in all three games so far. That much is suggested by the fact that Kagiso Rabada currently tops their tournament batting averages, and it’s in the middle order that de Villiers was attempting to waltz back into that South Africa have the most room for improvement.MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma appeal for an LBW dismissal against JP Duminy•IDI via Getty Images

JP Duminy has failed two times out of three, while David Miller keeps getting himself in and then immediately getting out. A turnaround for Duminy would be particularly timeous as he is in the last stretch as an ODI cricketer and will retire from the format after this tournament.West Indies have a few vulnerabilities of their own. They have been two down inside the Powerplay in both their innings so far, and against Australia their early blitz with the ball was let down by missed chances in the field and, later on, soft dismissals with the bat.The situation for South Africa is precarious. Victory against one of cricket’s most slippery teams is an absolute necessity if their campaign is not to go up in flames. West Indies’ biggest challenge could be to overcome their own inconsistencies.Form guideSouth Africa: LLLWW (Last five completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies: LWLLWIn the spotlightImran Tahir is South Africa’s second-highest wicket-taker in World Cups, but after striking dramatically with the second ball of the tournament, his trip to England hasn’t been particularly successful. He has only taken three more wickets across three innings subsequently, and his average (44) and economy rate (5.86) are comfortably his worst at any World Cup. South Africa desperately need a turnaround, and it could start with Tahir, who has enjoyed himself against West Indies in the past. He made his ODI debut against them at the Feroz Shah Kotla at the 2011 World Cup, claiming 4 for 41 in that game, and has continued in much the same vein in subsequent battles. He has now taken 26 wickets against West Indies in eight matches, while his average of 12.69 against them is his best against a top 10 ranked team in ODIs.Chris Gayle hits a pull shot•Getty Images

The loss of early wickets hasn’t hurt West Indies irreparably just yet, but being one or two down early could send their campaign skittering off the rails later on down the line. They’ve tried two different opening pairings in two games, thanks to Evin Lewis’ hand injury, but does it really matter who is at the other end when Chris Gayle is batting? There will be no Steyn to trouble him with the new ball, and if Gayle can survive Kagiso Rabada’s early onslaught he could be very hard to rein in. “Chris is Chris, he will know what he needs to do,” said assistant coach Roddy Estwick on the eve of the match. If he does what he needs to, all else will follow much more easily for West Indies.Team newsThere are a few different ways South Africa might look to re-shuffle their playing XI, and they will have to decide whether to play an extra batsman, an allrounder, a fresh seamer, or a second spinner. Tabraiz Shamsi went wicketless against India, while Dwaine Pretorius might find it hard to get into the side ahead of either Andile Phehlukwayo or Morris. Aiden Markram, who also offers a little with the ball, could slot back into the top three, and the decision could come down to whether South Africa believe Markram will score more runs than a specialist bowler – Beuran Hendricks – would save with the ball.South Africa (probable): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Faf du Plessis (capt), 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 David Miller, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Chris Morris, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Beuran Hendricks, 11 Imran TahirAndre Russell didn’t train the day before the match, but the team management insisted he was fit and would be available to play against South Africa. If Russell is fit, there seems little reason for West Indies to tinker too much.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Shai Hope (wk), 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Jason Holder (capt), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Carlos Brathwaite, 9 Ashley Nurse, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Oshane ThomasPitch and conditionsThe pitch is expected to be a belter – something more akin to the track upon which England and Pakistan scored 734 runs a month ago , rather than the one South Africa and India scrapped 457 runs on last Wednesday. There are, however, showers anticipated, so it could be an on-off sort of day in Southampton.Strategy punts Legspin is West Indies’ kryptonite. Five of the West Indies top eight average under 25 against legspin and Tahir might be most effectively deployed as a counter-measure to the big hitters in their lower middle order. Andre Russell has been dismissed twice in the 11 balls he has faced from Tahir in ODIs, while Carlos Brathwaite has also been out twice in the space of 17 deliveries he’s faced from him. Neither has managed a boundary off Tahir in this format. Perhaps an unhappy South African top order needs a reshuffle? An underperforming JP Duminy could move up to No. 4, the position at which he has scored two of his four hundreds and averages 46.7 across 33 innings. This would mean Miller slipping down to No. 6 – a position where he has much better numbers than Duminy, generally scoring much more quickly, especially at the start of his innings. Another option might be to shunt Markram up to open the innings, a position in which he averages 40.8, with Amla coming in at No. 3. That would also allow Amla to escape the ravages of the new ball, against which he has struggled in 2019.Stats and trivia No West the Indies batsman has made an ODI hundred at this ground, but Gayle came mighty close, scoring 99 against Bangladesh during the Champions Trophy almost 15 years ago. Not since 2003 have West Indies beaten South Africa in a World Cup match. Chris Gayle needs 15 runs to reach 1,000 against South Africa in ODIs South Africa and West Indies have played only three ODIs against each other since the last World Cup.Quotes”Andre will be fine… he is a warrior, he is a soldier, he is a strong man mentally and he has been for us – we didn’t expect him to bowl as much as he is doing.”
“Unfortunately we’ve had quite a few problems in this tournament regarding injury. We have to deal with what we have. There’s no point in complaining about it.”

Gareth Batty tops the bill as Surrey play the bad guys with style

This was the antithesis of Festival cricket. It was Division One cricket, it mattered and everybody knew it

Yorkshire 327 (Fraine 106, Clark 5-77) and 303 for 9 (Lyth 68) lead Surrey 362 (Stoneman 100) by 268 runsSurrey are back at Scarborough for the second successive season and those Yorkshire spectators who like their Championship cricket hard-bitten might be in the mood to book them in for the next decade. This was the antithesis of the Festival cricket that was once the soul of the town. It was Division One cricket, it mattered and everybody knew it. And a compelling finale could be in prospect as Yorkshire resume with a lead of 268 with the last pair at the crease. This match has felt too close to call from the outset, but at no time was the contest keener than in a wary fifth-wicket stand of 57 in 26 overs between Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Johnny Tattersall on either side of tea. Yorkshire’s lead when they came together was 133, Rikki Clarke having removed Adam Lyth, driving at one angled across him on 68, and Jack Leaning in successive overs.Spectators dwelt upon Leaning’s pair in the match – lbw this time to Clarke as he got too far across to one that swung back a shade – and wondered with good reason if his middle-order place might be vulnerable to Harry Brook. But while they chatted they watched intently, as they always watch. A Scarborough spectator on the popular banking can surreptitiously check their change at the bar and criticise a bowling change at the same moment. It while attention was at its height that Gareth Batty added his own personal brand of spice; he should come in a little jar with refills available. Batty is Bradford born, educated at Bingley Grammar, but that is no protection from occasional barracking and every time the crowd did so they sharpened him. They would have been better yawning with a faked lack of interest.Batty is so stingy at giving away the slightest advantage that if he managed one of the amusement arcades on North Bay you would be best advised to visit the one next door where you would lose your money more slowly. His return of 1 for 75 in 30 overs suggest that Yorkshire dealt with him competently enough, but it was a close-run thing. He possessed two warm-up acts in medium-pacers Ryan Patel and Rikki Clarke. Patel appealed for a catch at the wicket when there was daylight between the ball and Tattersall’s outside edge; the crowd’s derision was sparked. Clarke followed up with a series of oohs and aahs against the same batsman as he defended determinedly, the slips taking their cue and hamming it up in turn; the derision level went up a further notch. When the cricket is consequential, Batty comes alive. His face creases with exasperation, making use of every one of his 41 years, he puffs out his cheeks meaningfully in disbelief at a rejected appeal and he considers the minutiae of every delivery as if the world might suddenly end if he moved square leg in the wrong direction. The unsupportive umpire, Ian Blackwell, the same age as Batty, also a former spinner, but a considerably bigger figure than when he retired seven years ago, moved slowly to square leg at the end of the over as if in search of a bit of peace.”Tek ‘im off,” came the cry as the new ball loomed. But Batty wasn’t takken off. He negotiated two more overs and got his wicket, switching around the wicket to have Kohler-Cadmore stumped for 42 as his back foot strayed momentarily, a rapid reaction from Surrey’s stand-in captain and keeper Ben Foakes. The new ball came after 83 overs, at 242 for 5, and Tattersall fell three overs later, his 38 spanning 103 deliveries, as he fenced at Sam Curran and was caught at first slip. Yorkshire looked vulnerable, their lead 216, four wickets standing, but a foray from David Willey – 43 from 35 balls with eight fours against the new ball – swung the match again.Throughout it all, a low murmur could be heard around North Marine Road. The cricket is never incidental at Scarborough, but it is an excuse for conversation, including for some who are not by nature conversational. That conversation would extend into the evening in a town that mixes natural grandeur with the downbeat consequences of human failure, and which often appears to survive hand to mouth, but which for all that with the simple addition of a dual carraigeway the length of the A64 and a faster train route remains a place of huge potential, the prince of England’s seaside towns.

West Ham offered last-gasp chance to sign £47k-p/w Coufal upgrade

The transfer window slams shut tonight and West Ham United have been offered a chance to bolster their defensive options before the deadline passes.

Latest West Ham transfer news

David Moyes has already added England international Kalvin Phillips to his side on loan from Premier League champions Manchester City, and could now bring in an experienced full-back from Ligue 1.

According to L’Équipe, the Hammers have been offered Marseille right-back Jonathan Clauss in what would be a last-gasp deal before the window shuts.

West Ham boss David Moyes.

The report claims that the French side have begun to question his commitment to their cause after he went off injured against AS Monaco, despite the subsequent medical tests showing no signs of a serious problem.

This has opened the door for West Ham, and Turkish giants Galatasaray, and Moyes could land an upgrade on current right-back Vladimir Coufal by taking this opportunity.

Coufal's performances this season

The Czech Republic international has been a decent performer at the back for the Scottish boss in the Premier League throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Coufal, who produced zero goals and one assist in 27 top-flight outings last term, has provided creativity and solid defensive work for the Hammers.

As you can see in the table above, the 31-year-old battler has come out on top in roughly half of his physical contests, which suggests that he has been fairly average in 50/50 duels.

Meanwhile, Coufal has pushed up the pitch in possession in an attempt to make things happen at the top end of the pitch with his passing and crossing.

The stats that show why Clauss would improve West Ham's team

The current West Ham defender has not been a liability for Moyes but the manager could improve his side by bringing in Clauss, due to his attacking quality at right-back.

He has made 18 appearances in Ligue 1 so far this season and contributed with three 'big chances' created, 0.6 dribbles completed per game, and 1.6 key passes per match.

His best form, however, came throughout the 2022/23 campaign for Marseille as he showcased his creative genius on a regular basis, as you can see in the table below.

Since the start of last season, Clauss has racked up 17 'big chances' created for the French side in 52 Ligue 1 outings. Whereas, Coufal has produced seven 'big chances' for his teammates in 47 Premier League matches during the same period.

The £47k-per-week Marseille gem, who was once hailed as "incredible" by ex-boss Igor Tudor, has also won 55% of his duels in the French top-flight this season.

These statistics suggest that Clauss could offer slightly more in physical duels than Coufal, due to his greater success rate in individual battles, whilst having the attacking quality to create high-quality chances for his teammates far more regularly, which is why Moyes should take this opportunity to sign the France international.

This homegrown Rangers wizard could be the dream Lawrence replacement

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement has enjoyed a terrific start to life with the Scottish giants since he replaced Michael Beale in the dugout in October.

The English tactician, who has since joined and then departed English side Sunderland, was relieved of his duties whilst the Gers were seven points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

Clement has overseen a phenomenal turnaround at Ibrox that has left his team top of the table and two points ahead of their closest rivals after 26 league matches.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

The Belgian boss has only had one transfer window to shape his squad – in January – and brought in Mohammed Diomande, Oscar Cortes, and Fabio Silva to bolster his options.

It will be interesting to see what Clement is able to do in the summer with regards to the playing group, as it has been reported that he wants to lower the age of the squad.

Rangers star who could be allowed to depart

A recent report from Football Insider claimed that Gers star Tom Lawrence could be ditched at the end of the season, due to the manager's desire to piece together a younger side.

The outlet stated that Clement wants to bring in high-potential youngsters with the potential to develop as part of an exciting team at Rangers moving forward, which appears to spell bad news for the older contingent of Light Blues players.

Football Insider name Lawrence as one player who could be sold during the summer transfer window as any sale would be pure profit for the club, who signed him on a free transfer from Derby County in the summer of 2022.

Borna Barisic is also said to be on his way out of Ibrox on a free transfer at the end of the current season, as his contract with the Scottish giants is due to expire.

Whilst Rangers and the Belgian tactician could look to dip into the market to find high-potential players to replace the likes of Lawrence, Barisic, and others, they could also look to the academy to bring through and develop their own homegrown stars.

Ross McCausland has made 25 first-team appearances in all competitions so far this season, and contributed with three goals and four assists from the right flank.

18-year-old whiz Zak Lovelace also played twice in the Premiership earlier this term before suffering an injury, which shows that there are talented prospects coming through the B team.

With this in mind, Clement could unearth a dream homegrown replacement for Lawrence, should the midfielder depart on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window, by bringing Alex Lowry into the first-team set-up.

Alex Lowry's time with Hearts

The 20-year-old maestro spent the first half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Hearts in the Premiership and gained valuable minutes in the top-flight.

He started ten of his 12 appearances in the division as Steven Naismith provided him with plenty of opportunities to catch the eye in the middle of the park or out wide.

Lowry failed to score in those 12 matches but did contribute with two assists for the team, to go along with his one goal and two assists in two League Cup outings for the Jam Tarts.

As you can see in the table above, the Gers academy graduate showed glimpses of the quality he can provide in midfield with his ability to create chances and glide past opposition players with the ball.

However, the young gem was not a regular starter, possibly due to his lack of regular goals and assists, heading into the January transfer window and Naismith decided to send him back to the Light Blues.

Goals and assists may come for Lowry as he continues his development, though, as his record for Rangers at youth level has been particularly eye-catching.

Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry.

The talented wizard, who was once described as "dangerous" by ex-boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, racked up 12 goals and three assists in 16 appearances for Rangers B.

Lowry, who has produced two goals and two assists in 14 first-team matches for the club, has the potential to be a big goalscoring threat from midfield and could go on to emerge as a key player for Clement if he can translate that to senior level.

Tom Lawrence's form this season

The Wales international has made 13 appearances in the Premiership so far this season and, like Lowry, has caught the eye with his creative quality.

Lawrence, however, has not scored a single goal for the Light Blues in the top-flight this term, which means that they will not be losing a big goal threat if they decide to cash in on him.

The former Leicester City gem has, though, created four 'big chances' and assisted two goals for his teammates in those 13 league outings.

As you can see in the table above, both players have performed to a similar level in the Premiership this season, as they are both creative midfielders who have failed to find the back of the net.

At the age of 30, Lawrence is not a long-term option for Rangers and may have already reached the peak of his development, which is why Clement could cash in on him in the summer.

Tom Lawrence

The Gers should not plan to have the experienced whiz as a regular starter moving forward, due to his age, whereas Lowry is at the opposite end of his career at the age of 20.

He has the majority of his career, injury permitting, to look forward to and is a player the head coach can work with and develop over the years to come.

Even if Lowry does not establish himself as a regular starter next season, the academy prospect could learn from a player like Todd Cantwell and then look to break into the side consistently in the future.

Therefore, Clement could unearth a dream Lawrence replacement, and save the club millions, by bringing the youngster up into the first-team instead of swooping for a multi-million pound new signing.
