'It's going to be a bit of bodyline this series' – Tim Paine

Short-ball tactics from Neil Wagner and Mitchell Starc is ‘great theatre’ according to Australia captain

Andrew McGlashan in Perth15-Dec-2019There was a moment towards the end of the Perth Test where two of the key protagonists managed a smile. Neil Wagner knew what was coming from Mitchell Starc – it wasn’t going to be in his half of the pitch – and he somehow managed to swipe a top edge for six over third man. Next ball was an even more vicious short ball and it was edged to Tim Paine. That was the last wicket of a match to fall to a short delivery in a game dominated by them.Wagner had put his body on the line for New Zealand, bowling 60 overs in a Test – the most he has sent down – during which, according to an news report, Perth recorded three consecutive days over 40C for the first time. Starc, meanwhile, finished with 9 for 97 and had a brief moment to respond in kind to the treatment handed out by Wagner on him and the rest of the Australians.Marnus Labuschagne gets into a tangle while negotiating a Wagner bouncer•Getty Images

It felt a long time ago as the last wicket fell, but the fourth day had started with an extraordinary passage of play where Matthew Wade basically stood his ground and allowed Wagner to hit him. Though the margin of defeat was huge, taken in isolation New Zealand’s short-ball plan worked superbly in the second innings as Wagner and Tim Southee created a collapse of 7 for 58. Wagner also had the satisfaction of twice removing Steven Smith with the short ball.”It was great theatre, wasn’t it,” Tim Paine said. “We were just having a laugh before when we were bowling at their tail, we think it’s going to be a bit of bodyline for a lot of the series.”There’s been a lot of talk about it, but regardless of the pace of the two teams they are very, very skilled at executing that ball and they set great fields for it. So it’s a completely different challenge from what you get from other teams. They’re very good at it and they’re very clever.”While acknowledging that Wagner “would get a few back” for his troubles, Paine was full of respect for what the left-armer was able to do. The pitch in Melbourne will be slower than Perth, but that is unlikely to deter Wagner from trying for a repeat performance.”What I do know is our boys [the bowlers] won’t be getting any slower as the series goes on,” Paine said. “You’ve got to respect a guy who can run and bowl 50 overs and absolutely have a crack. He looks like the sort of bloke you’d love to have on your team.Colin de Grandhomme was adjudged caught off a snorter from Mitchell Starc•Getty Images

“Of course he’s going get a few back, that’s a given. I just thought it was all played in the right spirit, and our boys have got a lot of respect for the way he goes about it. This game was bloody hot, and I think he bowled about 50 overs and 200 bouncers. He’s clearly got a big heart, so hats off to him – I thought he did bloody well.”Kane Williamson’s assessment of the amount of short-pitched bowling was a mixture of Wagner’s strengths and a pitch which offered assistance throughout. Ultimately his team could not handle what Australia produced in response, bowled out for 166 and 171, and if the efforts of Wagner and the other bowlers is not to be wasted New Zealand’s batting must respond.”It was a tactic on a pitch like this when it did age and there were cracks and the bounce become a little bit more variable then it proved to be effective. It’s not for everywhere,” he said. “It’s also something that the likes of Neil Wagner have been very successful doing for us in his role for a long period of time. So I don’t know if it says any more than what we’ve had in this match but we’ll wait and see.”Now we go from here to the MCG and we’ll have to adjust to those conditions and come back to the red-ball. So the guys will look forward to a couple of days reflecting and then prepare for the next match.”Wagner and Southee should be due extra downtime given their efforts after New Zealand lost Lockie Ferguson on the first day. On a positive note for them, Trent Boult is looking likely to be fit for the Boxing Day Test after being “close” for Perth according to Williamson. He was a huge loss for the day-night Test and is now vital for their chances of fighting back.

A equipe jogou, produziu.

Nothing between them as South Africa and England prepare for decider

Two dramatic last-ball finishes have set up the T20Is perfectly and given both teams valuable pointers

The Preview by Alan Gardner15-Feb-2020

Big pictureTwo games, three runs between the teams, and one more clash to come. The T20Is have served up a buffet of belligerent boundary-hitting, as well as some nerveless death bowling and two of the closest finishes possible this side of a Super Over. Given England’s recent form in white-ball deciders, you wouldn’t rule out one of those being required in Centurion, either…Having seen the tourists stutter at the last in the opening encounter, South Africa seemed set to show them how to do it in style at Kingsmead, as Rassie van der Dussen revived a flagging chase and then Dwaine Pretorius tipped the odds in Tom Curran’s final over by smiting six and four from the second and third balls. A requirement of 15 off six suddenly shrank to five off three and then three off two – only for Curran to ice South Africa’s hopes of claiming the series with a toe-crushing yorker to Pretorius, followed by his trademark back-of-than-hand slower ball with the pressure on.Just as Lungi Ngidi had done a couple of nights before, Curran’s chutzpah had produced a grandstand finish – and England captain Eoin Morgan described the experience as “completely invaluable”, with future high-stakes encounters likely at the T20 World Cup later this year.South Africa’s disappointment was compounded by the fact van der Dussen was kept off strike for the final 10 balls of the innings, as the chase fluctuated back and forth. Quinton de Kock’s 17-ball fifty had signalled they were in the mood to pull off what would have been their second-highest successful T20I chase, before wickets from Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and Chris Jordan had put England on top.Punches were met by counter combos throughout the game. England shook off their East London failure with a fast start – despite Jos Buttler again falling cheaply in the Powerplay – but were beginning to get bogged down by the time Moeen Ali arrived at the crease in the 16th over. Moeen proceeded to hit seven of the most insouciant boundaries from his next 10 balls to pep up England’s chances. There was also some joy for Ben Stokes, despite a laboured start, as he made his highest T20I score of 47 not out, nearly nine years after his debut. The format is often played in fits and starts, leading to such anomalies, but with a World Cup on the horizon, this is the perfect time to build up a run of form. Both teams will be looking to grasp their opportunity again on Sunday.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)South Africa LWWLW
England WLTWLIn the spotlightDavid Miller is now one of the senior men in South Africa’s line-up and the most-experienced member of a reshaped middle order – but despite showing destructive form in the final ODI against England, he has struggled to hit his straps in T20 recently. Twice he has been part of mid-innings slowdowns, after South Africa were given good starts by de Kock and Temba Bavuma; in Durban, the stage seemed to have been set, as Miller came in at No. 3 in the eighth over, only to hole out for 21 off 16 with the asking rate beginning to rise. It seems he is still trying to shake off the effects of a poor Big Bash, having only made one score above 25 in his last 14 T20 innings.Much of the talk around England’s XI has centred on the ideal batting line-up – not so much as who is in it, but where they come in. Jos Buttler is a guaranteed World Cup starter, but should his extraordinary skills be deployed against the new ball, with the field up, or at the death, when a cool temperament is prerequisite? Two innings at opener against South Africa have so far yielded 17 runs from 14 balls – and England’s meltdown in East London left plenty highlighting the loss of Buttler’s finishing skills. Perhaps the real issue is that, after a tough Test tour, he looks to be down on confidence. But one freewheeling innings might be all it takes for things to click back into place.Team newsDale Steyn was rested in Durban, a precautionary move considering his injury history, but seems likely to return at seam-friendly SuperSport Park. Bjorn Fortuin, who only bowled two overs and was then the unlucky man tasked with trying to hit three to win off his first ball in international cricket, could miss out.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (capt, wk), 2 Temba Bavuma, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Jon-Jon Smuts, 5 David Miller, 6 Andile Phehlukwayo, 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Beuran Hendricks, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi NgidiMorgan has reiterated that England view Buttler as part of their strongest top three, so that may mean more time running drinks for Dawid Malan. Sam Curran and Saqib Mahmood are the fast-bowling options in the squad, though Tom Curran, Jordan and Wood all made good cases for keeping their spots. Protecting Wood from wear and tear could come into England’s thinking.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Jonny Bairstow, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Joe Denly, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark Wood/Saqib MahmoodPitch and conditionsAmong South Africa’s regular T20 venues in recent years, SuperSport Park is second only to the Wanderers for high-scoring, with the ball liable to disappear at altitude. A warm afternoon in prospect should set things up nicely for the series decider.Stats and trivia England have only played one previous T20I in Centurion, a game in which they were captained by Alastair Cook and lost by 84 runs. The opening stand in that match of 170 between Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman was at the time the highest in T20Is. It was ended by Joe Denly, taking a wicket with his first ball in international cricket. Three of the last four encounters between these two have come down to single-figure margins, with South Africa winning two and England one.Quotes”I wish it was a dead rubber on Sunday. But both teams have played really well. They won one or two small battles in key moments that helped them get over the line. It’s great to see both teams are playing good cricket and keeping it competitive out there.”
“Probably with two balls to go, it was South Africa’s game to lose, they were in an unbelievably commanding position… I thought Tom Curran did an unbelievable job.”

Update from "internal" source on rumoured Arsenal bid for Santiago Gimenez

A fresh update has emerged from the camp of Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez after reports that Arsenal had bid for his services over the weekend.

Arsenal back on track against Wolves

After a pair of damaging results saw Arsenal lose control of the Premier League title race and drop out of Europe at the quarter-final stages, Mikel Arteta's side got back to winning ways courtesy of a 2-0 win over Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

It is a result that lifts them back to the top of the Premier League as things stand, with Liverpool behind them on goal difference and Manchester City trailing by a point but with a game in hand on both clubs.

Arsenal could fetch a £173m fee by selling their "monster" talent

The Gunners face Chelsea next at the Emirates Stadium before a trip across north London to take on Tottenham over the weekend, with the Gunners likely needing to take three points from both London derbies to still be in consideration for the title come the end of the weekend.

There are still areas of improvement needed though, with Arteta's side clearly still lacking a spark in central midfield and also a reliable goalscoring striker. As it stands, only Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard have reached double figures this season for goals, with no one breaching the 20 goal mark yet.

Despite being the highest scorers in the competition, there is a feeling that Arsenal need more, and they have been credited with an interest in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The Mexican has enjoyed a fine campaign to date, scoring 24 times and grabbing 7 assists in 40 outings for his side in all competitions. On Friday, it was reported that Arsenal were one of many sides pushing to sign the 23-year-old, and there were even rumours that Arsenal had made a bid for his services.

Gimenez to Arsenal update

Now, a fresh update has emerged on the status of Arsenal's interest in the £29k-a-week Gimenez, and it appears to be just that for now. As per Mexican outlet Azteca Deportes [Via Sport Witness], an "internal Feyenoord source" has relayed to them that no bid has been forthcoming from any party, with the Gunners part of a trio of sides keen on signing Gimenez.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also keeping a close eye, but again have not made an offer and there has been "no formal approach" for the striker from any of the three clubs in question.

It remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal's interest firms up into something more serious in the coming weeks and months, but he would certainly solve a problem the Gunners seem to have in central areas, and is reportedly available at a bargain price of just £40m this summer, which would allow plenty of scope to rebuild the squad elsewhere too.

Spurs and Arsenal target’s agent spotted in North London – report

The agent of a transfer target for both Arsenal and Tottenham has been spotted in North London, according to a recent report.

Spurs and Arsenal battling on and off the pitch

The rivalry between Arsenal and Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side remains as strong as ever, and with added incentive for both sides heading into the latest instalment.

After drawing 2-2 at the Emirates Stadium back in September, it was Tottenham's turn to play host to Arsenal on Sunday, knowing that a win over their fiercest rivals would be a major boost in their own Champions League aspirations for next season, as well as effectively ending Mikel Arteta's side's hopes of first Premier League title since 2004, where they clinched the Premier League title at White Hart Lane in front of the Spurs faithful.

The match started just about perfectly for the Gunners, whose near unstoppable set piece dominance was helped this time by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg heading in at his own near post, with Kai Havertz then nodding home a similar finish to make it three after Bukayo Saka brilliantly slotted in a second on the break.

Cristian Romero tucked home what looked like a consolation after a mistake from David Raya, and while Son Heung-min's well-taken late penalty set up a nervous finish, Arsenal continue their march towards title glory.

Agent of transfer target spotted in north London

With the battle on the pitch now over for another season, attentions turn to matters off it, and the agent of a player wanted by both halves of North London has been touting his client's services.

The player in question? Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Georgiy Sudakov, who Tottenham are believed to hold a strong interest in this summer. However, recent reports have placed Arsenal at the front of the queue for his signature, with the 21-year-old thought to be available for around £60m this summer, far below his £128m release clause.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Ukraine.

It has already been confirmed that Sudakov will leave this summer, by no other than Shakhtar's own president Sergei Palkin: “This summer window, he has a big chance to move to some big clubs. We have had some contacts with big clubs and some are not negotiating with us directly but are getting a feel for the summer environment.

“He will definitely move to a top European club this summer. When I was at Chelsea versus Everton on Monday, many people asked me about Sudakov.”

Now, Sudakov's agent has been spotted at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, taking to Instagram to show off his time in N17, where he likely met with Spurs representatives to discuss a potential move.

However, The Mirror claim that Spurs are not interested in getting into a bidding war, which Shakhtar managed to spark to good effect over Mykhaylo Mudryk before eventually selling him to London rivals Chelsea, where he has since flattered to deceive.

The image will only serve to further fuel the fire around Sudakov, and will leave Spurs fans hopeful that they can get one over their rivals by agreeing a deal to sign the midfielder ahead of the new season.
