Sunderland eyeing move for "interesting" manager who could replicate Tuchel

It's been a difficult few months for Sunderland, who ended their Championship campaign with more of a whimper than anything else, but a new manager could now finally be on the horizon in what has been dubbed a shock move.

Sunderland manager news

If the Black Cats could go back, then the decision to part ways with Tony Mowbray may have never been made, especially since his replacement was Michael Beale. The former Rangers boss endured a nightmare spell to all but end Sunderland's play-off hopes, before Mike Dodds was handed the role on an interim basis.

Sunderland told £3,000-a-week star who Mowbray loved is going to leave

It could be a frustrating summer for the Black Cats…

ByTom Cunningham May 11, 2024

By the end of the Championship season, Sunderland found themselves 16th with the top six nothing more than a pipe dream and now their next appointment must be the right one. In that regard, the likes of Paul Heckingbottom and Steve Cooper have both been linked with moves to take the job, albeit without any announcement arriving.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Both managers took charge in the Premier League this season before losing their jobs at Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest respectively. Out of a job ever since, the Sunderland job represents an opportunity that may come their way, unless the Black Cats opt for a reported shock target.

According to The Sun, Sunderland are eyeing a move for Bo Svensson, who left Mainz in November last year after two years in charge. The 44-year-old is reportedly a 'shock' target and could make his first foray into English football to follow in the footsteps of both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, who also went from Mainz to an eventual move to England, albeit with stops along the way.

Having previously been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Svensson is certainly a manager who is rated highly and could now be left with the responsibility of taking Sunderland back into the Championship's top six.

"Interesting" Svensson can thrive where Beale failed

In need of a revival, turning to Svensson could be Sunderland's best bet. The former Mainz boss guided the Bundesliga side up to eighth in his best season at the club, before a drop off resulted in his exit at the end of last year.

Utilising a 3-4-2-1 formation, which is interestingly the same system that Xabi Alonso has enjoyed so much success with at Bayer Leverkusen, Svensson's style would help keep up the form of Jack Clarke all whilst adding the defensive cover that the Black Cats so desperately lack these days.

Having thrived in Germany's top flight for a period of time, the Dane should be more than capable of stepping into the Championship to do the job that Beal ultimately failed to do when handed the responsibility.

The appointment, should it take place, represents a more exciting option than the more familiar Cooper and Heckingbottom too, especially if Sunderland allow Svensson to build a project. Described as "interesting" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, the young manager is certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming months, as the Black Cats weigh up their move.

Lungi Ngidi rates himself six out of ten post-comeback

Although he is South Africa’s leading white-ball wicket-taker in 2020, he says he wants to be more economical

Lungi Ngidi, South Africa’s highest white-ball wicket-taker in 2020 so far, has given himself a six out of 10 for his performances over the past summer and believes there is room for improvement. Ngidi did not play any of South Africa’s four home Tests after injuring a hamstring in the Mzansi Super League (MSL) in mid-December last year but was part of all six T20Is and four of the five completed ODIs and finished with 25 wickets in total.”If I had to rate my performance over the last summer, I probably rate it at about a six. It was good, but to me it still wasn’t good enough,” Ngidi said. “There were a few games where I could have gone for a lot less runs. I picked up a few wickets and that’s my job, so I was happy with that but it’s not the finished product. I still feel I can deliver a whole lot more and a whole lot better.”The numbers show he is not wrong about being expensive. Ngidi’s T20I economy rate this year has been 10.6 while he conceded 5.67 runs an over in the ODIs. Both are his highest over the three years of his international career but need to be assessed in context. His most expensive ODI performance came in Johannesburg against England where his first five overs cost 52 runs but he returned to take 3 for 11 in four overs at the death and almost helped South Africa snatch victory. Similarly, in the three T20Is where he conceded more than 10 runs an over, Ngidi was among the wickets, and got rid of Ben Stokes in his penultimate over in Centurion, taking two wickets in his final spell against England in Durban, and playing a key part in defending 43 off the last five overs against Australia in Port Elizabeth.Ngidi finished the home summer with a career-best 6 for 58 in the ODI in Bloemfontein where he took wickets at the top and tail of the innings to cap off a superb comeback from injury and fitness concerns. He credited the CSA conditioning camp, which took place in January for Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jon-Jon Smuts and Sisanda Magala, and bowling coach Charl Langeveldt for his success. “Every person has a different formula and I was still trying to figure mine out, so going to that camp helped me do that. I figured out that I have probably got to work a lot harder than most people. It doesn’t come as naturally to me,” he said. “Having Langeveldt back has been really good for me. He is really supportive and encourages the way I think. He is very understanding with that and he has got a lot of knowledge. He is a very skillful bowler. It has really helped my cricket a lot.”He also gave a nod to South Africa’s batsmen, who improved as the summer wore on, and found new names to rely on. Centuries came from Heinrich Klaasen and Janneman Malan and the mood in the camp lifted. “I really had fun watching the guys go about their batting and the confidence that they showed. You could just see how happy the camp was when guys were performing and scoring their runs,” Ngidi said, adding that by the time South Africa got to the ODI series against Australia, their last of the season, a series-win was a non-negotiable for them.South Africa had not managed to claim the trophy in any of the four rubbers that went before (Tests, T20Is and ODIs against England and T20Is against Australia) but whitewashed Australia 3-0 in the ODIs to restore their pride. “The guys were desperate to win, so I think that made the difference at the end of the day in terms of the performances we put out. It’s not nice losing a series at home, so to come out and want to win was one of the main things that I think drove the players towards that whitewash,” Ngidi said. “Winning games like that gives you a lot of confidence and moving forward to India, you could see a different energy in the team and that was really exciting to see. But that’s probably gone now, so we are going to have to start from scratch and rebuild towards that energy that we had.”In India, South Africa did not play a game after the Dharamsala ODI was washed out and the remaining two matches called off as the coronavirus pandemic broke. Since then, Ngidi has been at home and has not seen his family in over a month. South Africa returned from India on March 18 and the squad was asked to self-isolate for two weeks. Eight days into that period, South Africa began a 21-day country-wide lockdown, which has been extended to a 35-day stay-at-home exercise due to end on April 30. “It’s always difficult being away from the family but it’s better this way. Coming from India, going through Dubai, I couldn’t risk going home,” Ngidi said. “But they seem to be doing well, so that does lower the anxiety levels a bit.”Like many of his team-mates, Ngidi has been spending his time trying to keep fit but is itching to get out on the park again. “|I live in an apartment so I can pretty much just work out and watch TV and read a bit. I am watching a lot more documentaries and brushing up on a lot of general knowledge that I didn’t have before,” he said. “What I am looking forward to most after this is probably just to go outside and have a jog. But also just a nice net session with the team and just being together on the field again, is something I am really looking forward to.”

England surge to 113-run victory as Ben Stokes turns on the style again

England square the series thanks to final-day team effort, led by star allrounder

The Report by Valkerie Baynes20-Jul-2020Ben Stokes, match winner, series saviour. That was the bottom line as England kept alive their quest for the Wisden Trophy with victory in the second Test to level their series against West Indies 1-1.The hosts’ 113-run triumph was built on a towering performance with bat and ball from Stokes and means both teams start the third and final Test, also at Emirates Old Trafford, on Friday with it all to play for.Stokes’ contrasting innings helped England into a commanding position and his ability to break up key partnerships not only helped his side take 19 wickets over the last two days, having lost the entire third day to rain, but destroyed West Indies’ chances of holding out for a draw, which would have seen them retain the trophy.Stokes left many wondering, is there anything he can’t do? But there was more than just his contribution to like about this England performance. To leave out three frontline bowlers in Jofra Archer, James Anderson and Mark Wood and replace them to great effect with Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran speaks to a strength in depth that will prove especially important this summer as six Test are shoe-horned into seven weeks.Broad’s fourth-day spell, when he took 3 for 1 in 14 balls during West Indies’ first innings, sent a clear message after he was overlooked for the first Test but, more importantly, it removed three recognised batsmen in quick succession when England needed time and wickets.Woakes also took three wickets in West Indies’ first innings and he and Broad combined brilliantly with the new ball to put the tourists in trouble early in their second.Meanwhile, Dom Sibley, a young player scoring the second century of a Test career that is only eight matches old, did little to advertise the excitement the game can offer but did everything in his power to give England control in their first innings. His 372-ball 120 showed a maturity to stick to his way and not be pressured into forcing something to happen. Then there was Stokes. His first innings of 176, which came from 356 balls, surprised even himself in terms of its longevity. It also pushed the England innings on where Sibley couldn’t.Then, when England needed quick runs to shore up their position before giving themselves enough time to bowl West Indies out, it was a case of “will the real Ben Stokes please stand up?” and there he was.Having been sent in to open for the first time in a Test on the penultimate evening and resuming on 16 the following morning, Stokes helped himself to an unbeaten 78 from 57 balls. He shared a 73-run partnership with Joe Root and was instrumental as England added 92 runs from 11 overs in the first hour before their declaration set West Indies a target of 312.Ben Stokes launches one down the ground•Getty Images

The first over of the day, from Kemar Roach, went for 14 runs, 13 of them to Stokes, including a four followed immediately by a towering six over long-off. Stokes was dropped on 29 by John Campbell at deep extra cover off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel in one of the more damaging West Indies fielding blunders, of which there were a handful. The declaration also gave England 85 overs in which to bowl West Indies out and time to access the second new ball, available after 80 overs. In the end, it wasn’t needed as West Indies were bowled out inside 71 overs.By lunch on the final day, Broad and Woakes had West Indies 25 for 3. The first wicket, Campbell caught behind off Broad in the first over of the innings, almost wasn’t recorded. Beaten outside off stump, Campbell attempted a loose drive which was collected by Jos Buttler, who showed no reaction whatsoever. As Broad appealed, Root looked as un-moved as the umpire, but he signalled for a review with barely half a second to spare and Ultra-Edge showed a clear spike to overturn the not-out decision.Broad had suggested the night before that Kraigg Brathwaite’s would be a vital wicket and Woakes delivered it, lbw. Broad then cut down Shai Hope with a beauty that jagged in off the seam between bat and pad to clatter into the top of off stump.Broad struck again in the fourth over after lunch when he had Roston Chase out lbw and it looked as though Woakes could have had the threatening Shamarh Brooks caught behind for 17 when the batsman fended to Buttler but was given not out and England opted not to review with replays later suggesting the batsman may have gloved the ball.Brooks and Jermaine Blackwood set to work, building a 100-run partnership that had the potential for subborn-ness, albeit with a lot of overs to see out, until that man Stokes reappeared.ALSO READ: As it happened – Live Report from the final day at Old TraffordStokes even tried to chase down a Blackwood four struck off his own bowling when the batsman found a gaping hole at mid-off. And while Stokes’ effort was in vain that time, he had more to offer with when his short ball, aimed at Blackwood’s ribs, struck the glove and ballooned to Buttler, who took a good diving catch.Blackwood was gone for 55 and Stokes had ended another solid union, just as he had done in West Indies’ first innings when he removed Brathwaite with a caught-and-bowled that broke a 76-run partnership with Brooks.Brooks backed up his first-innings 68 with 62 in the second as Woakes dismissed Shane Dowrich, who made a pair. But when Curran had Brooks out lbw, it fell to Jason Holder, the West Indies captain and star allrounder, to save his side from defeat. But when the offspin of Dom Bess came to the fore, a gem smashing into middle stump from outside off with Holder on 35 and West Indies still needing 129 runs versus England’s requirement of two wickets, it was only a matter of time – and the hosts had plenty of that – before they claimed victory.Of course, Stokes was in the action almost until the end, dismissing tailender Alzarri Joseph, before Ollie Pope’s spectacular juggled catch at short leg off the bowling of Bess accounted for Roach, the last man out.The only worry for England was the fact that Stokes stopped bowling in the middle of an over in apparent discomfort. Given his star turn in this match, England will be keen to have him fit for the series decider.

Ferdinand: £200k-p/w Chelsea man will follow Thiago Silva out the door

Chelsea could be set for more high earner departures this summer following Thiago Silva, with one pundit making a massive claim as the season came to a close on Sunday.

Blues secure European football

A Premier League final day win over Bournemouth ensured that Chelsea will definitely be playing European football next season. Which competition that will be in remains to be seen. As it stands, sixth place (where they finished) is set to take part in the UEFA Conference League, but that will be boosted up to Europa League football should Manchester City beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final next week, something that they are strong favourites to do.

Chelsea are now one detail away from sealing "huge" £50m+ signing for Poch

The Blues are close to getting their summer business underway…

ByTom Cunningham May 19, 2024

It is reward for a major turnaround at Chelsea, who won their final five Premier League games in a row to bolt up the table and leapfrog both Newcastle United and Manchester United, a scenario that seemed unlikely, bordering on impossible, just two months ago.

There is certain to be more upheaval this summer, and Thiago Silva has already confirmed he will be leaving the club, sharing a teary address after the final whistle at the Stamford Bridge, later saying:

"I’m not a superhero, but in those moments the fans chant my name, I felt like one. No matter if I was tired or if I was feeling a little bit down in the game, as soon as I heard the chants I felt re-energised.

"That sensation, that emotion, I don’t really know how to explain it. It’s amazing and made me feel like I could save the team, like nothing bad was going to happen in the game.

"In this sense, Chelsea is special. That’s why even though I was here for four years, it has felt like a lifetime. Not bad for someone who was only coming for a season!"

Pundit predicts major departure to follow

TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand has since claimed that Mauricio Pochettino will not remain as Chelsea coach beyond this summer. After a tough start, the Argentine has turned things round in west London and finished the season strongly. However, he went down the tunnel before the lap of honour took place on Sunday, prompting more speculation about his future.

Now, Ferdinand has claimed it is unlikely he stays: “From what I’m hearing about Mauricio Pochettino, I’m not sure he’s going to be there at Chelsea. The mutterings I’m hearing coming out, I don’t know if it’s going to end well there."

It would be an expensive decision to sack the Argentine, with Pochettino believed to earn around £10.4m a year, or £200,000 per week at Stamford Bridge and still having a year left to run, with the club holding an option for a further year.

Just as he seems to be getting a tune out of the players signed by the owners, potentially getting rid now seems a strange choice as well as an expensive one.

Steve Bucknor: My 'mistake' in 2008 Sydney Test 'might have cost India the game'

The former umpire recalled two contentious decisions in particular from the infamous Test

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jul-2020

AFP

Steve Bucknor, in speaking about his career, has said that he made “two mistakes” during the controversial Australia-India Sydney Test in 2008, which made headlines for the “monkeygate” spat between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh and the contentious umpiring decisions. In an interview with , Bucknor said: “I made two mistakes in the Sydney Test in 2008. Mistake one, which happened when India were doing well, allowed an Australian batsman to get a hundred. Mistake two, on day five, might have cost India the game. But still, they are two mistakes over five days. Was I the first umpire to make two mistakes in a Test? Still, those two mistakes seem to have haunted me.”India had reduced the hosts to 134 for 6 on the first day before an unbeaten 162 from Symonds and half-centuries from Brad Hogg and Brett Lee propelled Australia to a commanding 463. The first decision Bucknor refers to was when Symonds, on 30, edged a delivery from Ishant Sharma to MS Dhoni but Bucknor remained unmoved. Replays later showed Snicko had picked up the edge but there was no DRS at the time. The other decision Bucknor recalls probably refers to Rahul Dravid’s dismissal on the last day when India were set 333 to chase from a possible 72 overs. In the 34th over of the chase, with India fighting for a draw on 115 for 3, Bucknor ruled Dravid caught behind. Dravid’s bat was tucked behind his pad, and replays confirmed the ball had flicked Dravid’s front knee roll on the way. Michael Clarke later picked up the last three India wickets in five balls with about six minutes to spare, and Australia won the match and took a 2-0 series lead.”You need to know why mistakes are made,” Bucknor said. “You don’t want to make similar mistakes again. I am not giving excuses but there are times when the wind is blowing down the pitch and the sound travels with the wind. The commentators hear the nick from the stump mic but the umpires may not be sure. These are things spectators won’t know.”The episode became a blot on Bucknor’s otherwise celebrated record, as he was removed by the ICC from officiating in the third Australia-India Test in Perth.Looking back at happier times from his career, Bucknor recalled two World Cups, starting with 1992 when he had officiated only in a handful international matches but got to stand in the final. He would go on to officiate in four more consecutive finals until the 2007 edition.”I stood in only four Tests and three ODIs before that [1992 World Cup],” Bucknor recalled. “And I was the only umpire from the Caribbean at that World Cup. So I didn’t know if I was good enough to be there. During the tournament, I was told I was doing very well. The captains had good things to say. My aim was to be among the six umpires for the semi-finals. I would have been happy to even be a reserve umpire. I stood in the New Zealand versus Pakistan semi-final in Auckland. And after the match I was told, ‘Bucknor, you’re doing the final.'”I remember in 1996, West Indies versus Australia in the semi-final. I was in Delhi and I left my hotel room when Australia were 15 for 4. I went down to the lobby and told them to book my tickets to Jamaica. I then packed my bags and got ready to leave the next morning. That night, West Indies lost. I was sad because I wanted West Indies in the final. But personally, I was happy. Once the game was over, I was told, ‘Bucknor, first flight out to Pakistan for the final.'”The former umpire also explained his signature style of taking a long pause before declaring a batsman out. “I created replays in my mind,” he said. “Did the ball pitch outside leg? Was it high? Is it missing off? These are the questions I asked myself. I was criticised in my own country when I started out. One commentator said that if there is an appeal in the last over of the day, Bucknor’s finger will go up the next morning.”Bucknor retired in 2009 after officiating in 128 Tests and 181 ODIs; his Test record of umpiring in most matches was broken by Aleem Dar in December 2019.

O feito aproximaria time do G4, hoje distante por seis pontos.
