80% duels lost, 6/10 rating: Liverpool dud was saved by Jones & Salah

Liverpool made it a mightily impressive seven wins from eight in the Premier League against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea, but it was anything but straightforward for Arne Slot’s men at Anfield.

The Reds had to make do with a narrow 2-1 victory on the day, with the slim win seeing them move back up to the top of the pile for the time being, as the table toppers picked up the important three points by any means necessary after Manchester City’s earlier away win at Molineux.

Chelsea might well have edged possession and bettered the hosts when it came to shots on goal, but Liverpool would come away victorious at the end in gutsy fashion, as Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah stood out for Slot’s men.

Jones & Salah's excellent performances

Not many Liverpool fans would be shocked that Salah put in another excellent showing to add to his distinguished Reds back catalogue on Sunday, but some might well have been taken aback by Jones’ stunning display centrally.

This was only his second start of the season after all in league action, but he will be demanding more starts from this point onwards, after scoring the crucial second strike for his side to send Anfield into raptures.

Evading all of his Chelsea markers to prod home the winner, after a sublime Salah ball into the area cut apart the Blues back four, Jones would rightfully bask in the glory of scoring the decisive strike, having been a standout performer all afternoon away from this golden moment.

Only misplacing four of his 41 passes during the 2-1 win, Jones was as stylish on the ball as he was gritty when Slot’s men needed him to be, with six duels also won to show off his defensive prowess away from solely being the match winner.

Salah was also unsurprisingly front and centre of most electric attacking moves Liverpool mustered up, with the tricky Egyptian opening the scoring from the penalty spot, in what was an arguably contentious call from the referee.

Liverpool would have been thankful for moments like that going in their favour at full-time, however, with the Reds also shaky in patches in the slim victory notably in defence courtesy of Ibrahima Konate.

Konate's performance vs Chelsea

It wasn’t an entirely convincing showing from the Liverpool number five, who was at fault for the only goal that went the way of Maresca’s side in the back-and-forth contest.

Konate would just about keep Nicolas Jackson onside – with his leg amazingly the difference between offside and onside – who fired home the equaliser for the visitors early into the second 45 minutes, only for that to be ripped up when Jones restored the one-goal advantage moments later.

It was an off-day from the towering Frenchman away from just this moment of action, as Konate lost 80% of his duels in an uncharacteristically weak showing, alongside only managing to register one tackle as Chelsea then grew in confidence that they could potentially nick something late on.

His poor performance was reflected in Daily Express journalist Alex Turk’s post-match ratings, with the ex-RB Leipzig defender receiving a low 6/10 rating, compared to Jones and Salah who both picked up a stellar 9/10.

With more and more fixtures now coming at a rapid pace for the Reds, as three more games in all competitions come before the close of the month, Slot could be prepared to shuffle his pack and drop Konate for his team’s latest test in the Champions League mid-week against his ex-employers.

It has worked in the Dutchman’s favour here, as Jones delivered the goods after being introduced into the XI away at Crystal Palace, and could well work out in Germany as Liverpool seek out their third win in Europe’s top competition.

Regardless of what lineup is picked, Slot will have full faith in his group moving forward, as Liverpool continue to perform like a well-oiled machine under the ex-Feyenoord boss.

Back to school for Alice Capsey but England honours beckon

Teenager targeting involvement on A tour to Australia as next step in remarkable rise

It won’t be long, you suspect, before international teams start needing to do their homework on Alice Capsey, the 17-year-old winner of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) Young Player of the Year award. Capsey’s dramatic rise to prominence was one of the stories of the summer – but for now she has homework of her own to focus on, settling back into school life and trying to balance studying for A Levels with persistent talk about her England ambitions.Capsey described winning the inaugural women’s Young Player award as a “complete surprise”, putting her among the few who didn’t see such recognition coming. With Capsey still awaiting her first professional contract she is not currently a member of the players’ union – but the PCA’s Women’s Committee voted to make non-members eligible, and she duly became the youngest recipient of a player-voted award. Her performances in the Hundred, where she scored 150 runs at a higher strike rate than any of her top-order colleagues while also bagging 10 wickets as Oval Invincibles lifted the trophy, immediately made her the most recognisable schoolgirl cricketer in the country. She followed that up with a starring role in South East Stars’ Charlotte Edwards Cup success and, despite being overlooked for England’s T20I and ODI series against New Zealand, won favourable mentions from the captain and coach.Related

“I wouldn’t say I’m famous,” Capsey said of returning to Bede’s School in East Sussex for the start of term with plenty to discuss from her summer holidays. “But yeah, it’s been nice.”It’s great to come back to school and just to be around my friends. They keep you grounded by taking the mick a bit. But no, it’s been quite an easy transition. My teachers have been amazing. Even when I wasn’t at the beginning of term in school, they were sending me work so I was able to keep up with it, which has made it really easy to fit back into classes.”Capsey may have to get cramming, with the prospect of further time away from the classroom over the winter. England will send an A squad to Australia to coincide with their Ashes tour, ahead of the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, and Capsey has already had discussions with her teachers about what will happen if she gets selected.”We’ve got a break [from cricket] and then stuff starts back up in November,” she said. “Before Christmas, I’ll definitely be looking to get fitter, stronger and look to improve in certain areas of my game, to have one eye on that England A tour to try and get selected for that.”I’m looking to get as much [school] work done this side of Christmas, then I don’t have as much to do after. But all of my work’s done on my laptop, and all the lessons are recorded, so even when I’m out there, I can still do some schoolwork – which as much as it’s probably not what I want to be doing, it’s quite important.”Asked about Capsey after England’s 4-1 ODI series win last week, head coach Lisa Keightley described her as “a really exciting player” who was firmly on the radar. “She’s done really well in T20 cricket this year and it’s really exciting to see how she continues to develop to put pressure on England players, and that’s what we want.”Capsey also helped South East Stars to victory in the Charlotte Edwards Cup•Getty Images

England A will play three T20s and three 50-over games ahead of the Women’s Ashes, which will again be played using the multi-format points system. Capsey’s versatility, as a batter capable of opening or slotting into the middle order while also bowling some canny offbreaks, may help bump her up the lengthening queue for senior recognition, but for now she is content to focus on schoolwork and training.”I don’t know what the performances are doing that but that’s obviously what you want to hear,” she said of Keightley’s praise. “And obviously you want to perform, you have an eye on England, but you want to perform for your team and I think I’ve done that this season, and whatever happens in the future will be great. It’s nice to hear but I’m just taking my performances as they come.”So impressive was Capsey’s summer that she struggled to “pick out just one” highlight among many. But her verdict on the first edition of the Hundred – and its potential appeal to her cohort of fellow students – was unequivocal.”For me personally it’s been massive,” she said. “It’s given me a platform to really show what I can do, but also it’s grown the women’s game so much, for people who weren’t interested in women’s cricket. Because they came along to a double-header, getting involved and actually then really seeing how exciting it can be. I think it’s brought in such a new group of people.”I had friends from school who had no interest in cricket and then came to a game at The Oval and started following it. So I think it’s been really good in the sense that it is definitely bringing new people into women’s cricket. Not only my friends but also family, people like that. They’re now following cricket, and after the Hundred, they were following the Rachael Heyhoe Flint and Charlotte Edwards Cup. And so I think it’s been massive for the influence that it’s brought. I can see the impact it’s starting to make on the women’s game which is amazing to be a part of.”Alice Capsey was speaking following the 52nd cinch PCA Awards, the biggest awards ceremony in English cricket

Rodgers must drop 8/10 star & unleash Celtic brute to silence Sesko

Celtic welcome RB Leipzig to Parkhead in the Champions League this evening as they look to win for the first time since matchday one against Slovan.

The Hoops thumped the Slovakian side 5-1 in Glasgow on their opening night in the League Phase but their two matches since that have not been quite as comfortable.

Brendan Rodgers’ side followed up their win over Slovan with a devastating 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Germany, a game in which they were 5-1 down by half-time.

They then battled hard to secure a 0-0 draw away at Atalanta in their most recent outing in the Champions League, which means that they have four points in their three matches so far.

The Scottish giants had to dig in deep to land a draw in Bergamo, as the home side dominated the match – with 66% possession – and racked up 2.38 xG worth of chances without scoring.

Leipzig are currently second in the Bundesliga, with six wins and five goals conceded in nine games, and Celtic could face a similar test at Parkhead this evening, which means that they will have to contain the German side’s biggest threats.

RB Leipzig's biggest threats

They typically line up in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-2-2 system and this means that they often have two centre-forwards to occupy the defence and cause problems in the final third.

Those two strikers have, for the majority of this season, been Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko, who both offer different kinds of attributes at the top end of the pitch.

RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.

Openda is a fleet-footed, mobile, marksman who likes to make runs off the last line and has showcased his goalscoring quality this term, with five goals in eight Bundesliga starts, although he is yet to score in Europe.

Leipzig’s biggest threat in the Champions League so far, though, has been Sesko, who has scored three goals in three games in the competition – with two strikes against Juventus and one against Dortmund.

As you can see in the table above, the Slovenia international has scored six goals from just 4.82 xG across the Bundesliga and the Champions League this term.

The 6 foot 5 titan has also won the majority of his aerial battles, winning 2.3 per game on average, and scored two headers across both competitions, which illustrates how much of a challenge it will be to keep him quiet tonight.

Sesko is a centre-forward who offers quality in front of goal, as shown by his xG overperformance, as well as a physical presence for the centre-backs to deal with, which is why Rodgers must brutally ditch Auston Trusty from his starting XI.

Why Auston Trusty should be dropped

The USA international, who was signed from Sheffield United on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window, was selected to start alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers in the 6-0 win over Aberdeen in the League Cup at Hampden Park on Saturday.

His performance was rewarded with a player rating of 8/10 from The Scotsman, who wrote that the centre-back was rarely troubled by the Dons and kept things neat and tidy in possession.

Auston Trusty

Despite a strong showing, and a clean sheet, against Aberdeen, Rodgers must take the former Arsenal man out of the starting line-up as Sesko could take advantage of his struggles with aerial duels.

In the Premier League last term, Trusty barely won the majority of his battles in the air, winning 55% overall, as the Blades were relegated and conceded a staggering 104 times in 38 outings.

As you can see in the table above, the central defender has struggled badly in the air in the Champions League this season, losing a whopping 75% of his contests.

These statistics suggest that Sesko, given his aerial dominance, could take advantage of the summer signing in those situations to cause Celtic huge problems, which is why Rodgers must take Trusty out of the team to avoid that issue. T

The Celtic titan who should replace Auston Trusty

The Hoops head coach must unleash Liam Scales in his place in order to give the Scottish giants the best possible chance of silencing the former RB Salzburg sensation.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Unlike Trusty, the Republic of Ireland international is a towering central defender who has the presence and physicality to consistently dominate opposition forwards in the air, in the Premiership and in the Champions League.

In the 0-0 draw with Atalanta last time out in Europe, the former Aberdeen loanee won five of his seven aerial contests and made nine clearances to help his side keep a clean sheet.

Meanwhile, Trusty got away with losing five of his six aerial duels in that game because Mario Pasalic failed to score from any of his six headed attempts, which generated an xG of 1.0.

Sesko’s form for Leipzig this season, particularly aerially, suggests that he would not be as forgiving as the Atalanta midfielder was in front of goal, which is why the Hoops cannot afford to have a centre-back who is a liability in those situations tonight.

As you can see in the table above, Scales has dominated players in the Premiership and in the Champions League in aerial contests this season.

The left-footed brute, who was lauded as “fantastic” for the team by Rodgers, has proven that he has the physical and defensive qualities that will be needed to keep a player of Sesko’s quality quiet this evening.

That is why the manager must bring him back into the starting XI to play on the left side of the defence, with Cameron Carter-Vickers on the right.

NCL Round-up: Salman Hossain carries Barisal to convincing win; Sunzamul bags ten in Rajshahi victory

Two rain-affected draws meant unbeaten Rangpur Division continue to remain atop the Tier-1 table

Salman Hossain celebrates his second first-class century•Walton

The focus shifted to the Tier-2 matches in the National Cricket League this week after Barisal Division beat Dhaka Metropolis by seven wickets to get within less than two points of table-toppers Chattogram Division. Barisal were also helped in their hope for promotion as Rajshahi Division were victorious against Chattogram by 166 runs. With both Tier-1 matches ending in draws after rain ruined the first day’s play at the two BKSP grounds, Rangpur Division held their lead in the points table following the game against Dhaka Division, which keeps them unbeaten in the league, while Khulna Division and Sylhet Division stood at No. 3 and 4, respectively, following their own draw.Best batters
Barisal’s Salman Hossain celebrated his 50th first-class match by hitting his second century in the format, an innings worth 152 off 344 balls that included 15 fours and a six. That ton helped Barisal take a 261-run first-innings lead after Dhaka Metropolis were bowled out for just 87.Rajshahi’s young wicketkeeper Pritom Kumar struck his maiden first-class hundred as he made 117 against Chattogram. He struck 11 fours and a six in a 163-ball knock that helped revive Rajshahi in the second innings. He added 198 for the sixth wicket with the veteran Farhad Reza, who blasted five sixes and seven fours in his innings of 111 from 113 balls. For Chattogram, left-hand opener Pinak Ghosh made 102 with eight fours and two sixes to reach his fourth first-class hundred.Best bowlers
Left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam was adjudged Player of the Match for his ten-wicket haul in Rajshahi’s big win over Chattogram. Sunzamul finished with figures of 10 for 132 on his way to a sixth ten-for, which got him to joint-second position for most ten-fors in first-class cricket in Bangladesh. Abdur Razzak remains on top with ten such hauls. In the same match, offspinner Nayeem Hasan also took a five-for, and finished with nine in the match, while left-arm spinner Hasan Murad grabbed 5 for 96 in the second innings. For Khulna, pacer Al-Amin Hossain finished with figures of 9 for 116 against Sylhet.Best match
Rajshahi were bowled out for 194 in the first innings but retrieved the advantage quickly when they bowled Chattogram out for 119. However, Rajshahi slipped to trouble again in the second innings when they were 133 for 5 at one stage, before Pritom and Farhad combined to add 198 runs. They declared shortly after the pair was separated, but it was enough to bat Chattogram out of the game. Rangpur (28.89) and Dhaka Division (25.40), who are separated by 3.49 points, will be battling for the Tier-1 title in the final round starting Wednesday. The promotion battle should also be close, with Barisal (26.64) less than two points behind Chattogram, who are leading the Tier-2 table with 28.10 points.Players to watch
Pritom’s century bodes well for Rajshahi’s future as the once-mighty first-class team now languishes in the second tier. Meanwhile, Soumya Sarkar, who was recently dropped from the Bangladesh T20I team, made 57 for Khulna against Sylhet. Liton Das, however, managed only 24 for Rangpur against Dhaka Division.

Not Gordon or Isak: Newcastle have another £100m star in the making

Despite the constraints of FFP and PSR, Newcastle spent a sizeable £124m in the 2023/24 season, signing four players on permanent deals, and one player on a season-long loan.

The Magpies also let go of Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood to recoup some of their money, bringing in around £23m for Saint-Maximin and around £15m for Wood, who is now smashing it at Nottingham Forest with eight goals in 11 games this season.

Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, and Yankuba Minteh were three of the permanent signings, but the biggest signing of the summer was Sandro Tonali, who signed from AC Milan for around £55m.

Sandro Tonali's time at Newcastle

Before joining Newcastle, Tonali racked up 130 appearances for AC Milan in Italy, scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists in 9,158 minutes played.

Sandro Tonali

Tonali is a highly-rated midfielder, who specialises in ball carrying in central areas, has a long passing range, and can win his duels going box to box in the middle of the park.

The Italian was out for the majority of last season through a betting suspension but has returned to the Newcastle starting XI as of late, making 11 appearances and, providing two assists in 562 minutes.

Tonali scored this week for Italy in their 1-0 victory over Belgium in the Nations League, keeping them top of Group 2 in League A.

But, Newcastle may have a midfielder even better than Tonali coming through their own ranks, and he also made his Newcastle debut in 2023, like the Italian.

Newcastle's £100m man in the making

Lewis Miley came through Newcastle’s academy system, making his Premier League debut in May 2023. The 18-year-old has gone on to make 28 appearances in his short career thus far, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 1,744 minutes.

The young English midfielder is already valued at around £18m at just 18-years-old, and that has risen from a value of just £2m in the past 12 months, according to Transfermarkt. If Miley continues on this meteoric rise, there is no reason he cannot reach the same value as some of the finest English midfielders around.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Take Declan Rice, for instance. Like Miley, he made his first-team bow at West Ham at a young age before being purchased for over £100m by Arsenal. The reason? Well, he’s a damn fine player but being English certainly helped his cause too.

Miley, whose tall 6 foot 2 frame makes him a strong duel winner, which is shown by his defensive metrics. Last term, he actually made 2.35 tackles per 90, and 1.63 blocks per 90, which was more than both Rice and Tonali managed.

The youngster has a good engine, allowing him to go box-to-box efficiently in a similar manner to Rice, impacting all phases for his side, a key trait for midfielders in the modern era.

Lewis Miley scores for Newcastle

Whilst the 18-year-old’s progression metrics are slightly worse than Rice and Tonali, he still shows an air of calm on the ball, looking to play through the lines, take the ball in tight spaces, and help in the attacking zones, as shown by his 2.16 shot-creating actions per 90.

With Arsenal’s club-record man eventually commanding a £105m fee by the time he was 24, Miley could well reach that same level, as we have already seen exponential growth from the teenager in the past 12 months.

If those progression numbers begin to improve, and the Toon teenager snatches the spot of Tonali, his value could be set to soar once again. Newcastle are already hoping for £100m for Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon has also been touted at a similar price tag. Next could well be Miley.
