Maresca must unleash Chelsea teen who’s never started a league game before

The progress made in such a short space of time by Chelsea Football Club this season has been phenomenal. After a few torrid seasons and billions of pounds spent, they are finally playing in a way that reflects the money they have spent.

Under new manager Enzo Maresca, the Blues are sitting comfortably in second in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Liverpool, although the Reds do have a game in hand. Momentum is on Chelsea’s side at the minute, having won their last five and not lost in their last eight in the top flight.

The young players Chelsea invested in have certainly stepped up this season more than ever, and the pieces are beginning to fall into place.

Chelsea’s best youngsters this season

The Blues’ starting lineup for the 2-1 win against Newcastle United was their second-youngest squad by average age in the Premier League era. That puts into context the inexperienced Maresca has to work with.

However, that does not define quality, and Chelsea’s young players have certainly stepped up this season. One of their stars in 2024/25 has been Nicolas Jackson. The 23-year-old striker has scored an impressive nine Premier League goals this season in 15 games, also grabbing three assists.

Another player who has stepped up and performed well is Noni Madueke. The former PSV Eindhoven winger is having a good time of things this term, reflected in the fact he is now an England international. He has scored five times and registered three assists in the top flight, having played 15 games. He also scored a hat-trick against Wolves in a 6-2 win at Molineux.

Romeo Lavia is someone else excelling this term. It has been something of a stop-start season for the Belgian, who has struggled with injuries since making the move to Stamford Bridge. However, he has played nine Premier League games at the heart of their midfield, and Jamie Redknapp has been full of praise, explaining he has “done ever so well” for the Blues.

Maresca clearly believes in the young players at Stamford Bridge. He might well give a chance to another of the Blues’ highly rated players this weekend against Everton, Josh Acheampong.

Why Acheampong could start vs. Everton

Young defender Acheampong has been fantastic when given a chance for Chelsea. He has played three games this term after making his first-team debut in the Premier League in 2023/24, although he is yet to make a top-flight appearance this term, having only been seen for five minutes in league action before today.

Highly reputable journalist David Ornstein broke some good news to Chelsea fans last week. He reported that the 18-year-old had agreed to sign a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge. That is crucial for the Blues, who have locked down a player that Real Madrid wanted to sign, at least according to a report in October.

The young defender was impressive for Maresca’s side against Shamrock Rovers in the UEFA Conference League last Thursday. As per Sofascore, he had 127 touches of the ball, completing 101 out of 107 passes and winning eight from nine duels. He oozed class on and off the ball.

Should the London-born defender get the nod to start against Everton at the weekend, he could have a big job to play in keeping Iliman Ndiaye quiet. The Toffees attacker has two goals in the Premier League this term, including one in a 2-0 win over Ipswich.

Acheampong, described as an “outstanding” player by football analyst Ben Mattinson, could be vital in keeping the talented Toffees number 10 quiet. His obvious defensive talent, showcased against Shamrock Rovers in the week, could be crucial to stopping Ndiaye. Standing at 6 foot 1, the defender is an imposing figure, and his strength in duels could make life difficult for the Everton man.

In terms of how he may fit into the side, Acheampong can slot in at centre-back or right-back. With Marc Cucurella banned, Malo Gusto could move over to left-back, meaning the 18-year-old could play at right-back and potentially go up directly against Ndiaye.

Starting Acheampong against the Toffees would be a bold move from Maresca. However, his faith in young players and the obvious talent of the defender would not make it much of a surprise if he did unleash him.

Shane Snater keeps Essex in the game with career-best 79*

Walter, Critchley stage belligerent rearguard following on to frustrate Northamptonshire

ECB Reporters Network30-Apr-2022

Shane Snater launched an impressive rearguard•Getty Images

Paul Walter and Matt Critchley staged a belligerent rearguard action to frustrate Northamptonshire’s hopes of claiming a morale-boosting victory at Chelmsford. The fourth-wicket pair came together at 58 for 3 shortly before tea and were still there at stumps having put on 91 valuable runs as Essex fought to save the LV= Insurance County Championship match.Essex, eventually dismissed in their first innings for 193, with Ben Sanderson finishing with 4 for 32, were asked to follow-on by Northamptonshire. By the close on day three they were 149 for 3, requiring another 48 to make the visitors bat again. Walter was 40 not out, Critchley 44.That Essex are still in the game was largely down to Shane Snater, who almost single-handedly ensured the calamitous batting of the previous evening – when they were reduced to 83 for 8 – did not become even worse. However, his career-best unbeaten 79 could not prevent Essex going straight back in again, 197 runs in arrears.Snater dominated stands of 69 for the ninth wicket with Mark Steketee and 41 for the last with Sam Cook. More importantly for Essex, in their attempt to avoid back-to-back Championship defeats, his stoic resolution took a session out of the equation. The Zimbabwean-born Dutch international shone with a series of hooks, pulls and drives that were as effortless as they were exquisite. He accounted for the majority of the 98 runs scored for the loss of the last two wickets in an entertaining morning session. When Snater dabbed down to the vacant third-man boundary for the ninth of his ten fours, it carried him not only from 47 to 51 but to both his highest score for Essex (previously 48) and his highest in first-class cricket (50 not out for the Netherlands).Northamptonshire’s tactics seemed a little awry on a pitch that returned to its earlier placid state, and it was 70 minutes before front-line bowler Gareth Berg was finally introduced. To underline what his absence might have missed, with his fourth ball he had Steketee playing all around a full-pitched delivery and losing his off-stump.Still, Snater motored on regardless, capping his 94-ball knock with a towering straight six off Rob Keogh. His fun was curtailed, though, when Cook pushed forward to the off-spinner on the dot of lunch and was snaffled at slip.Without a moment’s hesitation Essex were asked to bat again. They were breifly in trouble losing three wickets in 14 overs. Sir Alastair Cook went for 19, caught at first slip off Tom Taylor, who had just been hit for three back-foot, off-side boundaries in an over by the former England captain.Tom Westley was next to go, pinned in a muddle of indecisiveness on his crease by Luke Procter, before Nick Browne wafted at Keogh and became the latest victim to a slip catch.Browne’s wicket went down in the midst of a sequence of 38 dot balls as Essex bustled along at a rate of barely two an over. There was another spell of five successive maidens that epitomised the Essex approach as Walter and Critchley effectively shut up shop after tea.

Well-drilled South Africa look to make it 2-0 against depleted India

Some swing was available in Cuttack on the eve of the match, but Parnell expects conditions to be fairly tough for bowlers

Firdose Moonda11-Jun-20222:58

Do India need to make changes to their bowling attack?

Big pictureThe series got off to a blockbuster start in Delhi with India posting their highest T20I score against South Africa, who completed their highest successful chase in response.Given that India are without even more players than they initially planned for after KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav were both ruled out on the eve of the first match, the result may not sting too much and there’s more than enough time to make up for it. India can’t ask for more from their batters, but they may want to consider how best to use Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik in the middle order and when to unleash their IPL bowling finds on a South African line-up that is quietly making a habit of winning from tough situations.Related

Rassie van der Dussen: 'When Shreyas dropped me, I knew I had to make India pay'

Dwaine Pretorius the batter as he gets going, one tick at a time

Where Shreyas Iyer falls short

Dating back to last year’s T20 World Cup, South Africa have developed a knack of relying less on luck (or lack thereof) and trusting their ability at the death. Their experienced batters are coming into their own but there are still questions about the make-up of the team that they will want to answer. Their all-round options on this tour are both seam bowlers, which creates more room for specialist spinners. We can expect this combination to change as the series progresses but perhaps not until the direction the contest takes is clear.South Africa are 1-0 up but were pushed to their limits in the first match. How much further can they go? India will want to see.Form guide(Last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightWhile India’s bowlers were slayed to all parts of the Arun Jaitley stadium on Thursday night, Harshal Patel initially looked the most likely to wrest back some control. He bowled pinch-hitter Dwaine Pretorius with a pin-point slower-ball yorker in a powerplay over that cost only one run but then was only brought back after the halfway stage. David Miller picked him well and Rassie van der Dussen punished his third over for 22 runs but still praised Harshal’s slower ball, which he called “very tough” to hit. Even after van der Dussen’s blitz, Harshal still managed to beat him with an offcutter that dipped under the bat. Taking pace off may be the best way to challenge a line-up that enjoys the ball coming on to the bat and Harshal will have a big role to play as the series goes on.It’s difficult to be too critical of South Africa’s batting after the first match but the contributions of Temba Bavuma could soon come under scrutiny, especially with so many top-order options in the squad. Bavuma has only played 22 T20Is, 14 of them as captain, and his strike rate is the number worth looking at. Overall, it’s 123.13, the third lowest for any South African with more than 500 runs in the format. Since taking over the leadership, it has dipped to 114.91. Given that he usually has Quinton de Kock at the other end and can play a stabilising role, that may not be much of a concern but should South Africa need more explosive starts, it may become more of a talking point.Team newsWe may have to wait a little longer to see Umran Malik or Arshdeep Singh with India likely to go in with an unchanged XI.India: (possible) 1 Ishan Kishan, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Dinesh Karthik, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Harshal Patel, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalAiden Markram, who missed the first match after testing positive for Covid-19, has remained in Delhi and will need quarantine for seven days from June 8, which rules him out of at least the first three games. That didn’t affect South Africa too much and after their success in the first match, they may not want to tinker with their combination. If conditions favour seamers, they may consider benching Keshav Maharaj for one of Lungi Ngidi or Marco Jansen.South Africa: (possible) 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 David Miller, 5 Tristan Stubbs, 6 Dwaine Pretorius, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Lungi Ngidi/Keshav Maharaj, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Tabraiz Shamsi1:11

Wayne Parnell – ‘Keeping the guys fresh mentally will be key for us’

Pitch and conditionsThe Barabati Stadium has only hosted two T20Is before and in one of them, India were bowled out for their fourth-lowest T20I total – 92 – by South Africa. In the other, Sri Lanka were dismissed for their joint second-lowest total of 87. While both attacks may be eyeing something similar with significant swing through the air available on the eve of the match, Wayne Parnell said he expects it to be fairly tough for bowlers, despite the green-tinged surface. He also anticipates another “sweaty,” encounter. Temperatures will be cooler than in Delhi, with the mercury rising to 37 degrees Celsius, but the 64% humidity may mean it won’t feel too much different.Stats and triviaDavid Miller and Kagiso Rabada are the only two South African players from the XI that beat India by six wickets at this ground seven years ago. Axar Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the two Indian players from that match.Rabada is one wicket away from 50 T20I wickets. If he gets there in this series, he will be the second-fastest South African to the milestone, after Imran Tahir, who achieved it in 31 matches.QuotesThere are two things that India does really well: one is cricket and the other one is hospitality. It’s been really awesome being here.”We discussed after the game what went wrong but it was just the first match of the series. Everyone is coming from the IPL and almost everyone who is in the team had a good IPL. So everyone knows what needs to be done in tomorrow’s match and things we can improve upon. So there wasn’t a big discussion because anyone can have an off day. As a bowling unit, we had an off day but that’s okay. We just want to come back [stronger] in the next match.”

Enquiry made: Man Utd "really interested" in signing "fantastic" defender

Manchester United are “really interested” in signing a “fantastic” defender and enquiries have already been made, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Lots of work for Ruben Amorim to do

The 2-1 victory over Manchester City could have been a real turning point for United, but they have continued their dismal form since their victory at the Etihad Stadium, having lost their last three Premier League matches. Before taking the job, Ruben Amorim would’ve been well aware of the size of the task at hand, but what he’s seen from his players so far will nonetheless be of great concern.

Amorim is tasked with rebuilding the club, and with the transfer window beginning tomorrow he will get his first opportunity to make his own mark on the squad he inherited. The Portuguese tactician is tasked with bringing in players comfortable operating in his preferred three-at-the-back system, which he is unwilling to compromise on.

In such a formation, it is vital to have wing-backs capable of contributing not only defensively but also going forward, and Amorim may have now identified a left-wing back who fits the bill. Romano has dropped an update about the Red Devils’ potential transfer business in January and beyond on his YouTube channel, revealing that Milos Kerkez is set to be targeted.

Bournemouth'sMilosKerkezin action with Crystal Palace's Will Hughes

The transfer expert said: “One of the players they appreciate, I told you several times, for the left-wing back position, is Milos Kerkez. I keep saying that both Man United and Liverpool have been monitoring the player, but at the moment my information is that Liverpool always prefer to go for a different profile, different kind of player.

“At the moment, Man United have been more constant in terms of enquiring, trying to understand the situation of the player, so I see Man United as a club really interested in Milos Kerkez.”

Romano also went on to say that Kerkez has recently switched agents, which is normally a clear sign that a player is looking to move to a new club in the near future.

Man Utd now have "serious interest" in injury-prone Barcelona squad player

He’s barely played all season…

ByBarney Lane Dec 30, 2024 Kerkez impressing for Bournemouth

The Hungarian has looked impressive in an AFC Bournemouth shirt from the very start, drawing praise from the media for his performance on his debut in August last year.

Last season, the 21-year-old averaged 9.85 defensive actions per 90, the highest amount of any U23 left-back in the Premier League, displaying that he is very competent defensively.

Not only that, but he has been described as “really comfy going forward” by former Middlesbrough man Robbie Mustoe, indicating that he could be the perfect option for Amorim at left-wing back.

With Luke Shaw’s injury struggles, it is obvious that Amorim needs to bring in a new left-back either in January or the summer, and Kerkez could be an excellent addition to the squad.

Steven Croft, Dane Vilas prove too strong as Lancashire surge past Essex

Seven-wicket win seals record ninth Finals Day berth as 161 target is hunted down

Lancashire 162 for 3 (Croft 76*, Vilas 51) beat Essex 161 for 5 (Pepper 36) by seven wicketsI suppose it had to happen sometime. Perhaps it was written in the stars above Todmorden that it would be this year of all years. In little more than six days’ time Lancashire will play Yorkshire in the semi-final of the Vitality Blast at Edgbaston. They will do so partly thanks to the efforts of two cricketers who are divided by a county border yet share more than they might acknowledge. On Wednesday Jordan Thompson bellowed defiance and took Yorkshire to a victory over Surrey that made feeding the five thousand look no more miraculous than a trip to Sainsbury’s. Just two evenings later, Steven Croft strode to the wicket at Emirates Old Trafford when his side were 6 for 1 and left the great ground an hour or so later after his 48-ball 76 not out had helped Lancashire thrash Essex by seven wickets, the victory being achieved with 26 balls to spare.Croft is in some of the form of his life, a point Lancashire should note given that the 37-year-old is in the final year of his current contract. With Lancashire needing 162 to reach Finals Day – it looked six to five and pick ’em at half-time – Croft drove Dan Sams for a thunderous six and then top-edged him for an altogether jammier one. It set the tone for the rest of an innings in which the Essex bowlers got no rest. Indeed, they looked back fondly to the sixth ball of Lancashire’s reply when Sam Cook got a cuticle to a fierce drive from Salt and ran out Keaton Jennings for nought. That was as good as it got for Simon Harmer’s team, a fact the visiting skipper acknowledged later.Salt and Croft put on 73 runs in less than eight overs. Sams conceded 19 runs in his first over, Cook 14 in his second. Lancashire had 61 runs on the board when the Powerplay ended and not even the Essex spinners, Harmer and Matt Critchley could staunch the flow. True, Salt fell for 27 to a superb relay catch when a leaping Michael Pepper threw the ball back infield to Ben Allison but that only brought Dane Vilas to the wicket and he seemed in an even more violent mood than Croft, with whom he added 78.Lancashire’s skipper struggled for runs in the Blast last year but his return to form in 2022 has been clear. This evening it was plain in his 22-ball fifty and epitomised by the slog-swept six that went through the temporary wall separating the outfield from Lancashire’s latest building site. Vilas fell to Harmer for 51 when his side needed five to win but it was a footnote at best. Whereas Yorkshire needed to dig very deep to get past a Surrey side who were thinking about Edgbaston hotels, Lancashire motored home, Havana cigar in hand. But let us pause a moment and consider the poor bloody bowlers. Firstly, we should note that Richard Gleeson, Liam Livingstone and Matt Parkinson are all on white-ball duty for England and were unavailable for this game, although Salt was made available for the quarter-final this morning. Given the absence of this trio, the efforts of the seamers, Tom Bailey, Luke Wood and Danny Lamb, each of whom conceded 28 runs in their four overs, were particularly valuable. Lamb also had Critchley caught by Luke Wells at cover for 12 and Wood removed Adam Rossington and Dan Lawrence, both courtesy of catches by Tim David. The second of them, a two-handed job above his head at mid-on to a bullet of a drive, delighted the crowd and astonished the batter.Essex ended the Powerplay with 53 runs on the board and continued to score at eight runs an over throughout the innings. Yet their total seemed respectable on a used pitch that we thought might suit Harmer and Critchley. It did not turn out that way partly because Croft is enjoying his best-ever season in T20 cricket and now needs just 46 runs to beat Lancashire’s short-form record, which is held by Tom Smith, the Yorkshire coach. The veteran’s batting will surely have delighted Cartmel Cricket Club’s Barmy Army, who draped their banner over the balcony outside one of the rooms at the Hilton Garden Hotel. The catering at Emirates Old Trafford might not match that at L’Enclume, the restaurant in their Cumbrian village that boasts three Michelin stars, but they will have had a great night, too.And if a word of caution is needed, Lancashire might note that while they have reached their ninth Finals Day, a record matched only by their fellow semi-finalists Hampshire, they now need to improve their poor record on the big day in Birmingham, where they have prevailed in just three semi-finals and won the trophy only once. Steven Croft of Lancashire will note such things but he will probably observe that trends are meant to be bucked just as age is only a number. It is difficult not to be delighted for him, although Jordan Thompson of Yorkshire might manage it.

There are also some doubts surrounding the long-term future of striker Gabriel Jesus, despite the Brazilian’s resurgence in form lately, with Belgian forward Leandro Trossard also potentially available for hire if the right offer comes along after talks over a new contract stalled recently (Football Transfers).

Taking all of this into account, Arsenal have been linked with both a new striker and a winger this month. Arteta is a real fan of Nico Williams, and would personally love to secure a deal for the Spaniard this month. However, according to The Athletic, a January swoop is unlikely due to the mammoth finances involved and whether the 22-year-old would decide to quit Bilbao mid-season.

In terms of centre-forwards, Arsenal are believed to be contenders for Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson. The Seagulls could let their young striker depart on loan towards the end of the month, but are yet to make a firm decision on his future (GiveMeSport).

There are a few options for the Premier League title hopefuls, as they look to potentially bring in a quality extra body and boost Arteta’s chances of clinching a first domestic crown for the club in over two decades.

As per CaughtOffside, it is now believed that Aston Villa star Jhon Duran is being considered by Ayto and co. The Colombian started 2024/2025 in absolutely electric fashion, prompting Villa to tie him down with a brand-new contract.

Despite a brief damp patch, Duran’s form picked back up towards the end of last year, and the 21-year-old “monster in the making”, as dubbed by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, is being eyed by a host of top sides.

The Gunners are among them, with CO claiming that Arsenal have approached Aston Villa over a January deal for Duran. Their asking price for the South American starlet stands at around £60 million, but Arteta’s men will have to act quickly, as Ligue 1 champions PSG are considering a bid in the region of that fee.

Duran has scored 12 goals in all competitions so far, with some of them coming against the likes of Bayern Munich and Man City.
