England hire team chef amid concerns about Test tour catering

Move follows concerns about food preparation on T20 leg of Pakistan tour

The England Test side has been shedding support staff during the early stages of Brendon McCullum’s tenure as head coach. However a new addition has been made for their upcoming tour of Pakistan – a chef. The appointment comes following a debrief of the limited-overs side’s experiences in the country during their seven-match T20I series. The feedback from players and support staff was that the food on offer, particularly at match venues, was not quite up to scratch, with a handful suffering from upset stomachs at certain parts of the tour. The issues encountered were far from drastic: no-one was ill for an extended period of time, and England went on to win 4-3 in an exciting series. However, given the demands of a Test match, not least the back-to-back nature of the three-match series across 21 days in three different locations (Rawalpindi, Multan and Karachi), having someone to oversee food preparation and tailor menus according to specific requirements and tastes throughout felt a necessary controllable to control. Indeed one of Cricket Australia’s few regrets from their successful tour of Pakistan earlier this year was not taking a chef with them. The topic of local cuisine came up during the T20 tour when Moeen Ali, as stand-in captain, waded into the food culture war between Lahore and Karachi, tongue very much in cheek: “Food-wise, I have been a little bit disappointed in Lahore. Karachi was really nice.” With Lahore not on the agenda this time around and Karachi hosting the third Test, those who wish to sample the local delicacies can rest easy.ESPNcricinfo understands Omar Meziane, who worked with the England men’s football team in a similar role during the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, will assume the role. While the Test team’s move will cater for fussy eaters, it will also make Jack Leach feel more at ease. The left-arm spinner suffers from Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, and takes immunosuppressant medication to manage the illness while being strict about what he eats.Related

On a tour of New Zealand in November 2019, Leach was struck down so severely by food poisoning he ended up being hospitalised and contracted sepsis. Though he was able to make it onto the subsequent Test tour to South Africa, the effects of the previous illness meant he was unable to play any part in proceedings and ended up leaving the tour early.Though this is perhaps the first time the ECB has specifically employed a chef for a tour, they have previous when it comes to food away from home. Ahead of their disastrous 2013-14 Ashes, the Sydney Morning Herald got hold of a dossier entitled “Test catering requirements” which was distributed to all hosting venues. The 82 pages contained 194 recipes ranging from “Moroccan spiced griddled chicken fillets with lime and coriander mayo” to protein-based “banana and peanut bars”, and was described by the as “modern pretentious”. It did England no favours in a crushing 5-0 whitewash.Expect pasta dishes to be a prominent part of the Pakistan menus.

Sheffield United made a bigger mistake than Bogle by selling £6m "mountain"

Sheffield United would have been watching on with awe on Monday night as automatic promotion rivals Leeds United dramatically beat Sunderland 2-1 to return to the top of the competitive Championship table.

Chris Wilder’s Blades do have an opportunity to return to the summit when the Whites come to town next up in what could be the second tier’s most tantalising contest to date this campaign.

Jayden Bogle will also be relishing the prospect of getting one over on his former employers here, with the 24-year-old defecting over to West Yorkshire in the summer to pursue promotion glory with Daniel Farke’s men, instead of sticking it out at Bramall Lane after relegation.

Jayden Bogle's numbers this season

There would have been some anger in the air when Bogle was allowed to move to Leeds, with the right-back still having a positive campaign for the most part last season even as the Blades finished bottom of the top-flight pile.

In total in South Yorkshire, Bogle would pick up 12 goals and four assists from his familiar right-hand side, with his presence in the Leeds team last time out helping Farke’s men beat Regis Le Bris’ tricky side.

Amassing 91 touches across the course of the high-energy 2-1 win, Bogle was committed throughout to the cause, with tackles and duels won aplenty as 11 tackles and duels were successfully won, alongside also completing two successful dribbles to push his team further up the field to mount a spectacular comeback.

Whilst he didn’t score or assist in this one, Bogle’s numbers in the Championship this season still stand at an impressive six goal contributions regardless, before analysing further his obvious strengths as a defender when collecting a hefty 16 clean sheets.

Wilder has bemoaned the lack of depth available to him in the right-back spot, hence the loan signing of Harry Clarke in the recently closed transfer window, but he will be equally displeased – if not more enraged – at the fact that one centre-back star was moved on when Bogle exited.

United's centre-back situation

After all, if it hadn’t been for the deadline day loan signing of Rob Holding, the promotion chasers would have been entering into a crunch few months in the division with just two available centre-backs.

That’s where Auston Trusty could have eased some nerves, with the American defender sold to Celtic in the wake of United’s demoralising drop down to the second tier.

Trusty was thrown straight into the deep end donning a United strip, considering his only full campaign at Bramall Lane was when the Blades leaked an atrocious 104 goals, but he still managed to win himself a big £6m move to Scotland.

Indeed, the ex-Arsenal man would walk away from that pitiful relegation campaign with his head held high still, with his numbers in Glasgow to date proving that he would have done a competent job in the chaotic Championship, instead of Wilder and Co having to take a punt on the forgotten Holding.

Looking at the table above, Trusty has effortlessly slotted into the Celtic team as a stylish but staunch operator at the back, with his hefty seven duels won on average in league action this season even seeing him be heralded as a “man mountain” by football journalist Ryan McGinlay.

The compliments don’t end there, with ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton lauding Trusty as “phenomenal” when the 26-year-old helped the Bhoys overcome RB Leipzig 3-1 on a famous Champions League night in November, which is a far cry from his troubles at the bottom of the Premier League in South Yorkshire.

Whilst Wilder will be pleased with what he has at his disposal at the back after some last-ditch buys, both Bogle and Trusty would have undoubtedly been in and around the first-team picture if they remained in Sheffield to this day.

Former Railways spinner Syed Hyder Ali dies at 79

He played 113 first-class matches during the course of a 25-year first-class career, taking 366 wickets

Shashank Kishore06-Nov-2022Syed Hyder Ali, the former Railways left-arm spinner, has died after battling a prolonged illness. He was 79.”He was suffering from chest congestion for some time now. After a routine check-up with his doctor, we were returning home when he suddenly collapsed. He passed away around 1.30 pm on Saturday,” his son Raza Ali, also a former first-class cricketer, told PTI.Having begun his career as a tearaway left-arm quick, Hyder turned to left-arm spin on the insistence of former Railways captain William Ghosh. He would hone his skills on docile tracks around India in the 1960s and 1970s.Hyder played 113 first-class matches during the course of a 25-year first-class career. These brought him 366 wickets at an impressive average of 19.71. He was also a valuable lower order batter, who made 3125 first-class runs, including three centuries and 10 half-centuries.After retirement in 1987, Hyder continued to play a key role at Railways, overlooking the cricket structure. He also served as selector when Railways won the Ranji Trophy in 2001-02 and 2004-05.Sanjay Bangar, the former India and Railways allrounder, remembered Hyder as a “stalwart” and a “well-respected” individual.”Very unfortunate to hear the tragic news,” he said. “I never got a chance to play alongside him, but I played when he was the chief selector of the Railways team. He was a stalwart. A soft-spoken and a well-respected individual.”Vinod Sharma, also a former Railways player and coach, termed Hyder’s passing as a “huge loss” while terming him the “godfather” of Railways cricket.Hyder’s best years came at a time when India’s spin stocks were at an all-time high. That it coincided with the likes of Bishen Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Shrinivas Venkataraghavan and BS Chandrashekar in their pomp meant a national call-up remained elusive.Members of the Railways team, who were playing a warm-up fixture against Jammu & Kashmir at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi observed a two-minute silence before the game on Sunday, in Haider’s honour.

Arsenal told they can get "incredible" ace for £9m less than Calafiori cost

Setting their sights on much-needed attacking additions, Arsenal have now reportedly been told the asking price in pursuit of a reinforcement who has been clinical against the Gunners in the past.

Arsenal transfer news

When Arsenal came away from The Etihad with a point and the news that Manchester City would be without key man Rodri for the remainder of the season emerged, their season looked destined to end in greatness. They simply failed to check their rear-view mirror, however, and Arne Slot’s stunning debut campaign has since seen Liverpool leave Arsenal in the dust.

Now, it’s back to the drawing board for those in North London. Mikel Arteta claimed that he would only give up on the Premier League title over his dead body, but there’s no doubt that he and his side are already in desperate need of a revival ahead of the summer transfer window.

Whilst injuries have far from helped their chances, the Gunners’ attacking problems are far from new. All those injuries have done is bring those problems to the front and centre of the headlines. The fact is, with or without absentees, Arteta’s side needs an attacking overhaul which could start with one La Liga star.

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal have now been told that Ferran Torres will cost them €40m (£33m) to sign this summer as they look to beat rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to secure the Barcelona winger’s signature.

As the summer approaches, the Spaniard looks more and more destined to leave the Nou Camp, having fallen down the pecking order amid the rise of Lamine Yamal and sensational form of Raphinha. With Barca needing to raise funds due to financial troubles, the Gunners have the chance to land some serious firepower after investing mainly in defence last summer with the likes of Riccardo Calafiori costing £42m.

The Gunners could land an impressive double swoop…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 28, 2025

Still just 24 years old, Torres could get his career back on track with a return to the Premier League and an Arsenal side in desperate need of an added attacking spark.

"Incredible" Torres could commence Arsenal overhaul

If Arsenal are to rebuild their frontline then starting with Torres may well be the way forward. The former Manchester City man would certainly need no introduction to those in North London, having netted twice in three games against the Gunners for the Citizens during his time in Manchester.

That goalscoring ability hasn’t exactly dwindled at Barcelona, either, even as his game time has. Despite starting just seven La Liga games throughout the current campaign, Torres has found the back of the net five times whilst creating a further two goals.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

It’s an ability which drew praise from Pep Guardiola during his time at The Etihad. The Spaniard previously told reporters: “He was fantastic all season and an incredible signing for us. He’s a young player and can play in three positions up front.

“He can make incredible runs in behind but maybe we have to start to think about if he can play as a striker because every time he plays in that position he has a sense for goal, a real sense for goal.”

Now, three years on from his City departure, Torres could get the chance to come back and haunt his former club by handing Arsenal a much-needed boost.

He eventually departed for 79 off 48 deliveries, his innings including six fours and four sixes.Max Bryant was the next-best batter for the Heat, with his 46 including eight fours.
