Michael Keane would be the perfect replacement for Toby Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld has preferred not to discuss his future plans in public and there has been little indication as to where his future truly lies despite again being linked with a move to Manchester United.

The Belgian is out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season and he has not yet been offered a new contract by Daniel Levy to remain at the club.

But come the January transfer window then Alderweireld’s future would become a trending topic once again with clubs eyeing potential moves for him.

Should it be confirmed in the near future that the 29-year-old will be playing his football at a different club from next season onward, then Levy should negotiate a deal with Everton for the signing of Michael Keane.

The Toffees will however not be easily trapped into letting go of someone as consistent as Keane, but from Spurs’ perspective, he would be an excellent addition in the place of Alderweireld.

Keane has been in terrific form under new manager Marco Silva and has looked strong on defence, which earned him a recall to Gareth Southgate’s England team in recent weeks.

The 25-year-old is under contract at Goodison Park until 2022 but pressure from the North London club could eventually lead to Everton selling him if a good offer is made.

Apart from suffering a head injury at the end of August, Keane has started and completed every other match for the Toffees so far this season. He was particularly impressive in the club’s draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend which saw him play next to new signing Yerry Mina for the first time.

But Keane could form an even more formidable partnership with Jan Vertonghen at Spurs and would they make an excellent centre-back pairing for Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs could be set for a massive campaign next season when they’ve moved into their new stadium and the club are surely expected to have made at least a few signings by then. Having Keane as one of those signings though will certainly put Pochettino’s men in a position to finally make a proper challenge for the title.

Rangers fans loved Tavernier’s performance vs Hearts

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been giving their verdict on the weekend’s action, and they’re absolutely full of praise for captain James Tavernier.

The Gers moved to the top of the table on Sunday, as goals from Connor Goldson and Alfredo Morelos were enough to earn all three points at Tynecastle.

Hearts are in terrible form at the moment, but the hosts took a deserved early lead courtesy of an own goal from Gareth McAuley.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”337211″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus Arsenal v Tottenham”]

Steven Gerrard’s side were by far the better team after that though, and they got their just rewards when Goldson scrambled the ball in from close range before Morelos flicked home from Tavernier’s set piece.

The skipper set up both goals, and it looks like Gerrard’s decision to give him the armband wasn’t such a bad call after all.

The 27-year-old has been heavily criticised by fans this season, but he now has nine goals and 11 assists in all competitions this season, an incredible output for a defender.

Fans are now gathering in support of a player who was taking loads of stick earlier in the campaign, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Tactical Analysis: Stubborn Sarri can learn so much from Lyon’s Man City approach

[ad_pod ]

Each week, our friends over at totalfootballanalysis.com preview our Fixture in Focus from a tactical perspective. Today, TFA’s Lead Analyst Lee Scott takes inspiration from Lyon and explains how Chelsea would do well to replicate the French side’s system to stop City in their tracks.

This coming weekend sees Manchester City travel to London to face Chelsea in the Premier League. A couple of weeks ago this would have been a truly intriguing encounter but recent weeks have seen the Blues suffer defeat to Spurs and Wolves in the league, as well as dropping points against Everton.

These results have not been catastrophic for Chelsea in terms of league position as they still sit in fourth place, but they have seen a gap develop between themselves and Liverpool in second. Liverpool are now eight points clear, and there is an even larger gap to leaders Manchester City, who are ten points clear of fourth place.

With that said, there is still a sense of intrigue around this game with Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri having enjoyed a modicum of success against City and Pep Guardiola last season in the Champions League when his Napoli side came up against them in the group stages. There is no doubt that Sarri will have come away from those matches with a more detailed picture of the system that Guardiola favours and this will have been further built upon during his time in England so far.

With City still enjoying near dominance domestically, Sarri and his coaching staff will be able to turn to the recent Champions League match between Lyon and City in order to formulate a game plan that will account for the defensive strength and attacking intent of Guardiola’s side. Lyon came out of the match with a highly credible 2-2 draw but in truth, they had the better of City for large portions of the game.

It is worth looking back on that match to identify the key factors that enabled the French outfit to unbalance City and to consider whether Chelsea will be able to do the same when the two sides face each other on Saturday evening.

Lyon

That Lyon were so effective as a unit against Manchester City in their Champions League group is no mean feat, but they utilised two key concepts, both in the defensive phase;

Man to man marking in the defensive phase

High pressing with a three-man forward line

Let us start with the first point. Lyon coach Bruno Genesio is not thought to be amongst the most tactically variable coaches in world football, so the decision to switch from their more standard 4-2-3-1 to a 3-4-3 came as something of a surprise.

When Lyon were in their defensive phase we saw both wing-backs drop back to form a line of five across the back. This back line essentially covered the width of the field in such a way that City found themselves unable to create passing angles and lanes through the defensive line, in the way that they do so often regardless of their opponents.

With the wing-backs dropping into the defensive line they were able to mark the two wide forwards for City. This left the three Lyon central defenders against lone striker Sergio Aguero. Normally having 3v1 in this area would cause your opponent to enjoy numerical superiority elsewhere but City play their central midfielders in such a high line that it allowed Lyon to man mark, and allow their two remaining central midfielders to overload and press Fernandinho, who played as the deeper controlling midfielder.

While City were still able to dominate possession they were doing so in areas that did not hurt Lyon and they found it harder to force a pass through the last line into the penalty area.

The second point is related to the first, given that it specifically relates to the defensive phase of the game. Normally logic dictates that you build your tactical system from back to front and when you have a back three that becomes a back five out of possession you will use three or four midfielders and then two or one forwards, depending on the shape of the midfield. In this match, Lyon retained three forwards on a high line with two central midfielders expected to prevent comfortable possession from Fernandinho.

The three forwards were all mobile and willing to run and press in order to intercept the ball high up the field and attack quickly in transition. Throughout the match City struggled to retain comfortable possession from the back line, which is usually a strength of Guardiola’s system and Lyon were smart to take it away.

Chelsea

It is easy to look back on the match plan utilised by Lyon after the fact to identify whether their tactical concepts were successful against City or not. What lessons, though, can Chelsea take and apply to their own plan for this match, given the players that Maurizio Sarri will have at his disposal?

Let’s look specifically at the two points identified from the Lyon vs Manchester City match to identify whether these will also apply for Chelsea.

First of all, the back line. A back three is not the unknown for this Chelsea side and under Antonio Conte they used a similar 3-4-3 structure that proved so successful for Lyon. They have the quality in depth in the defensive line for Chelsea to be able to adopt this system and with Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta, they have the players to perform the wing-back/full-back roles admirably. The issue, though, comes with the fact that Sarri is firmly wedded to the 4-3-3 system that he used at Napoli and now at Chelsea.

If Chelsea were to adopt the 5-2-3 defensive shape then there would be no space for Jorginho at the base of the midfield. Given that Sarri considers the Italy international to be integral to the style of play that he is looking to adopt at Chelsea, it is highly unlikely that they would come into a match of this magnitude without Jorginho anchoring the midfield.

Well, if Chelsea cannot adopt the same structure in the defensive line then at least they still utilise the same three-man attack, right? Not exactly.

Lyon used three players in Memphis Depay, Nabil Fekir, and Maxwel Cornet in their front line. All three are quick, versatile players who are able to interchange position with one another in order to press the opposition quickly when they are out of possession. Chelsea, on the other hand, are likely to start against City with Eden Hazard and Willian as wide forwards and one of Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud as the central striker. Hazard is capable of pressing high but Willian has regressed massively in a defensive sense this season and in attack neither Giroud nor Morata have the versatility to press effectively across the front line.

Instead, we will continue to see the defensive pressing instigated and maintained by N’Golo Kante from the midfield line with the three forwards acting as blocks that prevent the opposition from creating and utilising passing lanes to access the central areas of the field.

Conclusion

Whilst there are lessons to be taken by Sarri from Lyon’s approach against Man City it is unlikely that he will take the concepts used by the French outfit and adopt them whole into his own tactical approach for this upcoming match.

Sarri is a coach that is proactive in his approach, trusting in his own tactical identity to bring success to his club, That is not to say that he is tactically inflexible, as he used a four-diamond-two system with Empoli prior to being offered the Napoli job, but now his favoured 4-3-3 is very much in place.

Leeds fans lavish praise on Pablo Hernandez

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United attacker Pablo Hernandez registered his sixth Championship assist of the season at the weekend in his team’s 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Indeed, Hernandez set up Patrick Bamford for the only goal of the match against Bolton, with the victory moving Leeds to the top of the Championship table.

Hernandez has also contributed seven goals in the Championship this season, with the 33-year-old showing his class once again.

It would be fair to say that the Leeds supporters have a fairly high opinion of Hernandez, and that has again been shown on social media.

The Spaniard spent the first half of the 2016-17 season on loan at Leeds from Al-Arabi before signing on a permanent deal in January 2017.

It has been almost two years since Hernandez officially became a Leeds player, and he has proved to be an absolute revelation for the club.

The Chalkboard: Does Mourinho exit spell the end for Matic at Man United

[ad_pod ]

Nemanja Matic’s Manchester United career may be over following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to make his mark at Old Trafford.

One the chalkboard

Now that Mourinho is gone, Matic may mourn the death of his Red Devils career, having been one of just four players to back the Portuguese manager right until the end.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Matic, along with Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Romelu Lukaku, still believed Mourinho could guide the most successful club in English history back to the top.

The same report suggests that Mourinho had lost 90 per cent of the squad’s support following the 2-2 draw away to Southampton, with his pre-match meeting corrosive amongst the dressing room.

A possible cause of the £40m signing’s continued backing is that he followed Mourinho to Old Trafford when Chelsea sacked the Portuguese manager, even though the defensive midfielder was not believed to be his ideal candidate.

Watch the video below to find out who the Playmaker FC squad are tipping to be the next Man Utd manager…

Looking for an attacking threat

What Matic brings to United is an out-and-out defensive midfielder, who could have been ideal in getting the most out of Paul Pogba by allowing the French ace to push forward.

The 30-year-old’s to the point style of play was ideal under the defensively-focused mind of Mourinho, but under the leadership of someone new he may struggle to remain in the starting XI.

Should Solskjaer prefer an attacking threat from midfield, he may look to play Fred and Ander Herrera alongside Pogba, giving more energy and another forward threat to the central roles.

Building for the next guy

At the end of the day, Solskjaer is on loan as a manager to build for the next head coach through the door.

In order to generate the most harmonious atmosphere and a cohesive unit for whoever comes in next summer, it would be worthwhile for the former United forward to work with younger players rather than the 30-year-old Matic.

It is unlikely the Serbian will be able to play a pivotal role at Old Trafford for years to come, and some fans turned on the midfielder a long time ago as his form continued to decline.

Do you think Matic has a future at Manchester United? Let us know in the poll below…

The Chalkboard: Klopp can exploit Wolves weak spot by playing Milner at right-back

[ad_pod ]

According to The Independent, Wolves winger Diogo Jota will miss the game with Liverpool thanks to a hamstring injury he suffered in last weekend’s win over Bournemouth, and Jurgen Klopp can use this to his advantage.

On the chalkboard

Jota’s injury is a big blow for Wolves, but it is equally good news for Liverpool. In his last three games, the Portuguese winger has netted two goals and provided one assist as the Premier League newcomers won all three on the bounce.

Without this attacking threat Wolves will be weakened down the left-hand side of their favoured front three. However, Jota also works hard defensively and his absence will hamper Nuno Espirito Santo’s team as they look to nullify the threat of the current league leaders.

For this reason, Liverpool boss Klopp can feel more comfortable playing James Milner as an attacking right-back, as opposed to Nathaniel Clyne who started in the 3-1 win over Manchester United at Anfield. With Matt Doherty in excellent form down the Wolves right, their left-hand side could be a weak spot where Liverpool find the most joy on Friday evening.

FFC’s James Jones has identified the one thing that could cost Liverpool the title. Find out what it is in the video below…

Versatility

Throughout his career Milner has proved himself to be an incredibly versatile footballer. Having spent nearly a full season at left-back under Jurgen Klopp, he made his 500th Premier League appearance at right-back in the recent 4-0 win over Bournemouth.

Klopp likes his full-backs to get forward and be an outlet for the midfield, and Milner’s crossing makes him dangerous when in those attacking positions on the right-hand side, which may be easier to find given Jota’s injury.

Given that Trent Alexander-Arnold is out with injury, Milner at right-back seems the obvious choice for Klopp as the Reds look to get the three points that will see them top the table at Christmas.

Opinion: Man City could be about to make huge mistake by refusing to sign Fernandinho replacement

As Manchester City prepare to host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium this evening one thing has become glaringly apparent: Pep Guardiola is one player short in his quest to achieve back-to-back titles.

The elusive piece in the jigsaw is, of course, a quality back-up for Fernandinho. City’s bid to sign a long-term replacement has formed a core part of the club’s efforts to strengthen the side in the past twelve months, and yet a solution to the defensive midfield conundrum feels some distance away.

Discussion over potential January transfer targets has persisted during City’s season thus far, with the likes of Tanguy NDombele, Ruben Neves and Frenkie de Jong all linked with moves to the Etihad Stadium since the season got underway.

But a recent report from ESPN has served to pour cold water over discussion linking City with a January transfer for a new central midfielder, as sources close to the media outlet have revealed the club will rely on the players currently available rather than sign a new midfielder this month.

After watching both Ilkay Gundogan and John Stones struggle in their auditions for the role of Fernandinho’s understudy, there can be little doubt that City are lacking the presence of a player who genuinely understands and can thrive within the role the Brazilian plays.

With Liverpool storming ahead at the top of the Premier League table City simply have to record three points this evening, but even a priceless win over the Reds could be in vain if they fail to strengthen in midfield.

Regardless of the result, one would presume that Txiki Begiristian, Pep Guardiola and Khaldoon Al Mubarak will sit down in the aftermath of the Liverpool game to discuss plans for the remainder of the reason, and if they fail to alter their stance on the signing of a new midfielder there’s no doubt it will come back to bite them as the season develops.

Barrios signing may get fans back on Everton’s side

According to Argentinian outlet AS, Everton are closing in on the signing of Boca Juniors midfielder Wílmar Barrios.

Fellow Premier League rivals Tottenham were interested in the confrontational midfielder in the summer, but it looks as though The Toffees are going to win the race for the 25-year-old this January.

The defensive midfield position is one that Everton have targeted this January, with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin not making the grade under manager Marco Silva at Goodison Park. Barrios will add depth there to go alongside Idriss Gueye and André Gomes. While this transfer goes a long way in helping the team, it actually means a whole lot more.

Everton are currently under a fair bit of pressure, as results have not gone their way lately. Their victory over minnows Lincoln City in the FA Cup at the weekend was only their second win in their past nine matches in all competitions, something that is simply not good enough for many Everton fans. However, another big signing sends out a statement similar to the signings that they made in the summer. The addition of the likes of Richarlison, Bernard and Yerry Mina in the summer created a positive atmosphere at Everton, and their performances seemed to reflect that attitude at the beginning of the season.

The addition of Barrios could once again inject that feel-good feeling into the Everton camp, and could signal a turnaround in fortunes this season. This could be the statement that the club need to make to get the fans back on their side.

Newcastle fans are angry at Cardiff’s club-record £18m move for Emiliano Sala

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter in frustrated fashion after they heard that Cardiff were set to smash their transfer record to bring Nantes striker Emiliano Sala to the club, in a deal said to be worth around £18m.

Understandably, seeing as the Magpies’ club-record transfer is the £16m spent on Michael Owen, which happened well over a decade ago, fans of the Tynesiders are livid that Cardiff have bettered that figure whilst Mike Ashley refuses to spend yet again.

Additionally, they will also be furious that another relegation rival has strengthened their attack significantly, which could prove vital in the battle for survival.

However, it is a huge risk for the Bluebirds to splash out such a fee on a 28-year-old with one good Ligue 1 season under his belt – Sala has hit 12 goals in 16 league starts this season.

Let’s take a look at how Magpies’ supporters reacted to the huge transfer news…

Klopp must force Lovren out of Anfield quickly

Liverpool will feel confident that they can secure the Premier League title in the current campaign, after putting in a rather promising performance against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Reds have defied expectations under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp so far this season, with their main aim of securing the Premier League title getting closer by the day.

Although, the January transfer window could prove crucial for a number of different reasons, but one of them is potential departures, as one particular first-team memberhas struggled to impress at times.

Sadly, Dejan Lovren is slowly slipping down the pecking order at Liverpool after a number of rather shaky performances in recent times. The Croatian made a number of mistakes against Wolves in the FA Cup and he was at fault for Manchester City’s first goal at the Etihad.

Liverpool have even resorted to drop Fabinho into the heart of the defence in Joe Gomez’s absence, as Lovren is seen as too much of a liability in the race for the Premier League title.

The Reds are currently light on numbers at the heart of the defence but the January transfer window is now well underway, so there’s plenty of opportunity for Klopp to either secure a replacement.

Liverpool fans – thoughts on a potential Dejan Lovren exit?
