Leeds fans swoon over Jay-Roy Grot after goal

While Leeds United are firing on all cylinders in the Championship title race, one of their youngsters out on loan is actually doing exactly that.Marcelo Bielsa’s side made it five victories from as many matches at the weekend after defeating local rivals Huddersfield Town 2-0 in the west Yorkshire derby, meaning they overtook league leaders West Brom to regain the top spot.Meanwhile, over in the Netherlands, winger Jay-Roy Grot scored a wonderful solo goal for his temporary club Vitesse as they defeated FC Twente on Saturday afternoon. He posted the strike on social media.

And as a result, fans have been responding in their droves with many tipping the 21-year-old for big things upon his return to Elland Road.

Here’s what has been said…

Loads of the Elland Road faithful were full of praise for the out-on-loan wide man with him being described as a “beast” as well as a “king” while one supporter lauded the goal for being “unbelievable.”

It was only Grot’s second strike of the season having featured 25 times for the Dutch outfit, but it was some effort.

He has made only 22 appearances for United since joining in the summer of 2017 and with over a year to run on his current deal, there could yet be a future for him at the club.

There have been calls for him to feature in the Premier League next season – provided the Yorkshiremen gain promotion.

Others talked up Bielsa’s managerial ability and how he could be integral to the Dutchman’s possible transformation into a first-team star.

One fan suggested he needed a pre-season while another believed he would suit the Argentine’s system.

A further member of the Whites crowd claimed that Bielsa “could do wonders” with the winger if he hands him an opportunity next season.

Everton loanee Jonjoe Kenny is the heir to Seamus Coleman

Costing a reported fee of just £60k back in 2009 whilst David Moyes was manager, Seamus Coleman may go down as one of the biggest bargains of the Premier League era, let alone in Everton’s recent history.

The Republic of Ireland international has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in English football’s top-flight for a number of years, making 310 appearances for the Toffees.

He has scored 26 goals and provided a further 28 assists, but with him turning 32 later this year, his time at the top-level is no doubt dwindling.

Even this season, he has been used a bit more sparingly, playing 21 games across all competitions, but only completing the full 90 minutes in three of Everton’s last ten Premier League games.

As such, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will no doubt be looking for someone to take over the mantle, particularly with Djibril Sidibe only at the club on loan. And that is exactly where Jonjoe Kenny comes in.

The 22-year-old is spending the season on loan in the Bundesliga with Schalke, and he has not disappointed whatsoever. He has played 25 times across all competitions, and manager, David Wagner (formerly of Huddersfield), has paid glowing tributes to the full-back.

“I can tell you what, he is already close to becoming a fan favourite here in our stadium. He is, for sure, one of the best signings which we have made this summer. I think it’s one of the best moves a young British player can make in Europe if he is not able to break through in his own team in the Premiership. To go to the Bundesliga, you have to be – and luckily Jonjoe is – very brave.”

Kenny’s talents were spotted long ago however, with Everton icon David Unsworth describing him as a “terrific talent” and someone who “looks at home in the Premier League” back in 2017.

With a campaign abroad under his belt, Kenny could return to Goodison Park this summer and stake his claim for being the perfect successor to Coleman. At only 22, he has the opportunity to be Everton’s right-back for the next decade to come, just like his predecessor.

Meanwhile, Everton fans react to this news on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Max Meyer may be allowed to leave Crystal Palace

Matt Woosnam has suggested that Max Meyer may be allowed to leave Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window, on The Athletic.

What did he say?

With there being no Premier League football on at the moment, attention has turned to the next transfer window among some Palace fans.

Their side currently sits 11th in the Premier League table, just six points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, so the feeling will be that the right decisions in the market could help them progress even further as a club.

Woosnam was asked about who could be sold, and after discussing Patrick van Aanholt, he suggested another player that Roy Hodgson may let go of: “Max Meyer will most likely be allowed to leave. Despite his relative lack of games, he is sure to have suitors. It just hasn’t worked out in this system for the German, but Palace seem to have found a balance in that midfield recently.”

A bad fit

As mentioned by Woosnam, things really haven’t gone to plan for Meyer since he arrived at Selhurst Park.

Looking specifically at this season, he has made just eight starts and seven substitute appearances across all competitions, failing to register a single goal or assist in that time.

Considering he is meant to be a creative talent, it says a lot that the 24-year-old averages just 0.1 key passes and 0.4 completed dribbles per Premier League game this term.

Rated at £9m by Transfermarkt, he has worked hard, as indicated by the fact he makes 1.2 tackles on average, but things just don’t seem to have worked out for the German, with Hodgson struggling to find a way to fit him into his system.

The hope from this point will be that he is able to find another club where he can settle in and make his mark for them – something he has failed to do at Palace.

Meanwhile, a Palace player posted on Instagram after the Premier League’s suspension was confirmed.

Crystal Palace: Hodgson’s 2 summer priorities

When this season eventually comes to a close, Roy Hodgson has a few things he needs to address.

They are not major tasks, for his Crystal Palace side are in fairly good shape as they sit 11th in the Premier League, comfortably resting on 39 points without fear of relegation – it is much more a case of fine-tuning a squad in need of some new faces here and there rather than a complete overhaul.

Let’s take a look at one sale and one signing the former England manager must oversee this summer…

Sale

Simply put, Hodgson has to offload Max Meyer if he isn’t going to play him.

The 72-year-old has only handed the Germany international 21 Premier League starts from a possible 67 since he arrived on a free transfer from Schalke.

That is entirely down to his discretion as manager and he can choose his team as he pleases, although with Meyer picking up £125k-a-week – he is Palace’s second-highest earner – he needs to be shifted if Hodgson isn’t going to play him more regularly.

Signing

Nathan Ferguson needs to become a Palace player this summer – his arrival is a must.

The 19-year-old right-back came within a whisker of moving to Selhurst Park in January, although he failed his medical and negotiations with West Brom ultimately fell through.

Ferguson will be a free agent in the summer when his contract expires, and seeing as Joel Ward is Hodgson’s only right-back following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s exit in the summer, a fresh face in that area is certainly a priority.

Calling all Eagles fans: Can you get 90% on this quickfire Palace quiz?

Ward is now 30 years of age, so bringing the Baggies teenager to SE25 would ensure that Palace have a player who can fill that role for many years to come, and also have an experienced head to guide the youngster and show him the ropes at Selhurst Park.

In other news, this Palace man is arguably one of the shrewdest investments of the Steve Parish era…

Liverpool fans are all saying the same thing about Harry Kane

Liverpool have been mooted as a potential destination for Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

The prolific centre-forward is one of the most talented strikers in world football, with a return of 181 goals in 278 Spurs appearances illuminating the extent of his prowess in front of goal.

However, Kane recently cast doubt over his future in north London by suggesting he is open to the prospect of leaving, per Sky Sports.

“It’s one of those things, I couldn’t say yes, I couldn’t say no. I love Spurs, I’ll always love Spurs. But it’s one of those things – I’ve always said if I don’t feel we’re progressing as a team or going in the right direction, then I’m not someone to just stay there for the sake of it.”

In response to those reports, Chris Sutton suggested that the England international should consider moving to either Liverpool or Manchester City if either club submit an offer for his services, per BBC Sport.

“Spurs are a brilliant club, but at this moment in time they are way behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

“If one of those clubs came in for him, if you were Harry Kane you would be be stupid not to go.”

And those comments have stimulated discussion amongst the Reds faithful on Twitter, though the tone from an overwhelming number of supporters is rather surprising.

Despite his world class record in front of goal, plenty of fans suggested the club should avoid making a move for Spurs’ talisman.

One fan alluded to his record with injuries to justify their standpoint, while another expressed concern over his compatibility with Liverpool’s style of play.

The remainder, meanwhile, simply don’t want to see him at Anfield.

Here’s what the fans had to say about Kane…

Rafael Scheidt was robbing from Celtic

In modern football the word flop gets thrown around on an all too regular basis. Vast sums of money are flung at a footballer who doesn’t warrant it and off into the sunset they ride on a golden chariot filled with cash from merely sitting on a bench.

That was the story for one player at Celtic at the turn of the millennium, a man who will do enough to send shudders through those at Parkhead, as well as the coaching staff at the time – John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish.

The unfortunate flop in question is Rafael Scheidt, someone who earned three caps for Brazil in the cycle running up to their triumphant 2002 World Cup campaign. Those appearances were rather unwarranted as his club side handed sweeteners to the national team in order to sell the player on for a high price.

And indeed at the time, they fetched a fee that quite frankly they had no right to command – £5m. The rumour goes that Barnes had never watched Scheidt in action besides videotapes of his performances.

That may be common practise for a manager now but they have a plethora of scouts who deeply analyse a player’s qualities. However, it doesn’t appear as though that was the case for the centre-back who ultimately cost a seven-figure sum.

But why was he such a disaster? Well, he only played five games for Celtic and cost them a grand total of £20,000 per week from the wage bill. For a man who played such little football and for someone who had been rarely-seen, he was ransacking the club’s pockets.

As it happens, it rather summed up Barnes’ tenure – he was sacked after just a few months and replaced by Dalglish.

Scheidt ended up spending three years on the books of Celtic, although two of them were on loan with Corinthians. His chances of playing out the rest of his contract following that spell came to a halt following a failure to gain a work permit. Funnily enough, that was because he never played for Brazil ever again.

If the defender was playing now, he’d have become a humorous internet meme for millennials but fortunately, his exposure in Glasgow was slim during 1999 and 2000. As such, he’s a name worth forgetting despite his rather remarkable story.

Arriving aged 23, one teammate famously commented on the central defender, exclaiming: “the guy couldnae trap a bag of cement.” It’s a comical reference but it summed up his time at Celtic Park – one where he very rarely actually kicked a football.

Only real Celtic fans will get 100% on the Ultimate Hoops quiz. Test your knowledge below…

He wasn’t good enough and the coaching staff very quickly realised that. Scheidt is undoubtedly one of the strangest and worst signings in Celtic’s proud history.

Simon Hughes reveals key change behind the scenes at Liverpool

The Athletic journalist Simon Hughes said that the pathway between the academy and the first team at Liverpool is as clear as it has been since the 1990s, in an interview with The Anfield Wrap.

What did he say?

This season has seen a number of talented youngsters emerge at Liverpool and begin knocking on the door for first-team minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the obvious example and has established himself as a starter and a crucial part of the team, but Nico Williams, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott have also impressed.

Speaking to Liverpool podcast, The Anfield Wrap, Hughes said that the improvement in their academy is no mistake and is the result of more consistency and clarity at the club.

“I think at this moment in time, the pathway between the academy and the first team is, I don’t want to say clear, that is that wrong word, but there’s great accessibility and possibilities on that pathway than there has been at any point since the early 1990s,” Simon Hughes told The Anfield Wrap.

“I think the reason why is because the club has benefited from certain periods of consistency. Jurgen Klopp has been in charge for five years now but it still feels fresh, which is brilliant. I think for fans and everybody it still feels like it’s early days for them for some reason, but he’s been there for five years.

“Things are very clear about what it takes to become a Liverpool player and you know, one thing that I took from interviewing people and writing that article is if you don’t work hard and if you don’t get about the pitch you’ve got no chance, which I think is a great basis for any footballer, because they know, they can’t afford to think that they’re very good at any point.”

Building for the future

Liverpool have as promising a group of academy players as they have had in some time, with Jones, in particular, pushing for greater involvement.

As Klopp’s current side begins to age, with a number of key figures now entering their late prime years, rejuvenating the squad will be really important and the academy clearly has a role to play in that.

Rhian Brewster, Ovie Ejaria and Harry Wilson have also impressed on loan spells and might hope for more first-team action next year.

Craig Hope rubbishes Mauricio Pochettino’s Newcastle link

Newcastle United fans have been going crazy this week after Sky Sports revealed that Mauricio Pochettino was high on the prospective owners’ wishlist to replace current Magpies boss Steve Bruce.

However, Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has poured cold water on such claims, suggesting that the idea of Amana Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium even having a shortlist was absurd as their main focus was on actually completing the takeover.

He tweeted:

This news will be disappointing for some at St James’ Park given just how much they want the former Spurs manager in charge.

Hope also plays down the idea of offering a £19m salary to the Champions League runner-up, which is only £1m less than what Manchester City pay Pep Guardiola.

Nottingham Forest: Sabri Lamouchi a ‘big fan’ of Mbaye Diagne

Nottingham Forest have joined the race to sign Senegalese striker Mbaye Diagne from Galatasaray this summer.

According to Fotomac (via Sport Witness), the Reds are keen on snapping up the 28-year-old and have joined Premier League side Watford in eyeing up a potential move in the next window. The Turkish outfit are reportedly looking for bids in the area of £5m for Diagne’s signature.

Galatasaray signed Diagne from Kasimpasa in January 2019 for €13m (£11.6m) but loaned him out in September to Club Brugge. His performance in the Super Lig in the 2018/19 campaign saw him score an incredible 30 goals in 29 appearances between two different clubs (via Transfermarkt).

The 28-year-old’s time in Belgium has been less prolific but still shows his goalscoring ability. Diagne has four goals in six league appearances with Club Brugge this term.

Sabri Lamouchi is reportedly a ‘big fan’ of the striker and would like to see him make the move to the City Ground.

Despite Watford also being in the running for Diagne, Forest could be the more favourable club. The Reds are currently fifth in the Championship and, as it stands, will qualify for a place in this season’s play-offs. After an impressive run, Lamouchi’s side have a good chance of securing Premier League football and could stay in the top flight thereafter.

The Hornets have desperately struggled this campaign and could potentially be in relegation trouble, depending on how the Premier League season is decided.

With Lamouchi being especially fond of Diagne, the club should push for the deal, especially for a fee as minimal as £5m. The striker’s clinical nature will help bolster Forest’s attack and bring a whole new dynamic to the way they cut open the opposition’s defence. His international experience will also add another level of professionalism and experience to the squad.

Forest fans, should the club go for Mbaye Diagne this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
