It’s not often you hear about an up and coming Irish footballer. That’s not to disrespect the football that hails from that part of the world but it seems increasingly rare.

However, in Conor Grant, the Republic of Ireland and Sheffield Wednesday have a rising star on their hands that we may start to hear a lot more about very soon.

Grant signed for the club back in 2017, arriving from Shamrock Rovers as a largely unknown prodigy. He’s still not really known to many but his performances for Wednesday’s U23’s this season suggest he’ll be ready to make an impact at a higher level in the near future.

The creative midfielder has enjoyed a breakthrough season, signing a professional deal with the club in December before being handed a squad number ahead of the Owls’ game with Bolton earlier this year. He didn’t make the squad on that occasion, but it shows he’s very much in Steve Bruce’s thoughts.

It’s clear to see why too. Grant is one of those players teams strive to have, he’s got quick feet and his ability to pick a pass is a key feature of his game. He’s also got goals in him, finding the net often in 2018/19.

Two of his best displays came against city rivals Sheffield United and Crystal Palace in the Development League. He claimed a goal and an assist in both matches, with his willingness to drive at the defence in evidence, particularly against the Blades.

Speaking to The Sheffield Star, the club’s development manager Neil Thompson spoke highly of the 17-year-old: “Conor is a good, level-headed lad. He loves his football. He is a good player and he has good awareness and we just have to keep working with him.”

His awareness of the play around him is one of the things that stood out when Wednesday’s U23’s beat their rivals 2-0, putting the ball on a plate for Rolando Aarons to score. It’s something that should excite Owls supporters in the years to come.

Grant may find a first senior team appearance difficult to come by considering the club finds itself in a promotion race, but while he may not be ready for that just yet he’s certainly a player they must continue to invest plenty of time in.

It would not be unfair to say that Leeds United’s transfer business in the loan market this season has been far from great. All the players that Marcelo Bielsa signed on a temporary basis appear to have fallen disappointing flat – with Jack Harrison potentially the only one to have worked out.

The likes of Lewis Baker, Jamal Blackman and Izzy Brown (who all arrived from Chelsea) have/had failed to make an impression at Elland Road and have/had struggled to even get into the first-team under the Argentine.

And, it appears they may have dodged a bullet when it comes down to a player who snubbed them in the January transfer market in their quest to add a winger to their ranks.

Rajiv van la Parra revealed to ELF Voetbal that he had turned down the chance to head to Elland Road in favour of a switch to Middlesbrough.

“The reason for me is a big question mark,” he told EFL Voetbal. “It really came as a surprise. The trainer makes the decisions. As a player, you respect those choices. I then indicated that I wanted to go to a club where I could go for minutes. Then everything went fast.

“Middlesbrough and Leeds United immediately reported to my agent. Middlesbrough (interest) was more concrete than Leeds. They did everything to get me in. I immediately got a good feeling about it. I also wanted to stay in England. I did not hear anything from the Premier League but I actually like to fight for the prizes again.”

However, things did not go to plan for the Huddersfield Town winger during his time at the Riverside Stadium with Tony Pulis.

The 27-year-old had managed to make just three Championship appearances for the club whilst he was with them and is yet to play a full 90 minutes of football, having accumulated just 68 minutes of action so far.

Valued at £3.6million by Transfermarkt, he has since returned to his parent club amid injury concerns and is unlikely to play first-team football again this season and, as such, you could say Leeds truly dodged a bullet with this one.

Crystal Palace’s defensive record is a mystery in itself.

At times, the Eagles form this impenetrable shield around them to grind out victories and earn crucial clean-sheets. Everything we’ve come to expect from a Roy Hodgson team.

On other days, however, they fall apart like a house of cards.

Frustratingly, much like their attack, their defence is still not completely set, missing some bite or composure which could make them even more difficult to score past. With that in mind, the Eagles are reportedly looking to fix this problem and according to reports (via The Sun), they’re tracking the development of young centre-back Ezri Konsa at Brentford.

The 21-year-old’s impressed for the West London side, helping them keep seven clean-sheets by putting in some strong performances in a physically demanding league. He’s really helped steer the Bees away from trouble, with his mobility, commendable game-reading skills and assertiveness at the back helping him keep some bullying strikers at bay, so Steve Parish simply must sign him this summer.

Konsa’s averaged at 1.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 3.3 clearances per game (stats via WhoScored), showing glimpses of a confident defender primed for big things in the near future. If the Eagles truly want to solidify their defence for the long-term, the 21-year-old’s their man to go-to.

Not only can he help strengthen their backline, but help in improving other aspects as well.

The young star’s fantastic distribution ability can make the transition from defence to attack easier and restrict Palace’s problems playing out of defence. If he can help improve the way Palace build from the back, fans at Selhurst Park might be in for some better football.

At long last, right?

Indeed, Konsa can benefit from learning under the strong James Tomkins while adding speed and spirit to Crystal Palace’s defence towards making the Eagles a mean opposition to score past.

Leeds United supporters have reacted with bemusement to one statistic from the club’s 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Friday.

The Whites were beaten 2-1 by the Latics as they sustained a serious blow in their bid to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Indeed, the club are now third, level on points with Sheffield United in second but behind the Blades on goal difference.

Phil Hay, the Leeds correspondent for the Yorkshire Evening Post, pointed out after the final whistle that Leeds’ attempted 59 crosses across the 90 minutes.

One led to the sending off of Cedric Kipre, who handled a Patrick Bamford effort on the line, resulting in a penalty that was missed by Pablo Hernandez.

Bamford scored the first goal of the game just a minute later but Marcelo Bielsa’s side were pegged back by a brace from Gavin Massey.

And fans have been left dejected by Hay’s revelation, with Leeds having 36 shots on goal, though only 10 were on target.

Plenty of Leeds fans have disagreed with Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to let Aston Villa score on Sunday, and those fans will absolutely love something Paul Robinson spotted during all the chaos.

Leeds and Aston Villa seem destined to meet in the play-off final at Wembley. The pair are currently set to face Derby County and West Brom respectively.

Leeds’ potential opponents, the Rams, have a knack of falling at the play-off hurdle, while the Baggies are shrouded in uncertainty after the sacking of Darren Moore.

And if Sunday’s 1-1 draw between the Whites and Villans is anything to go by, then their possible showdown at Wembley could be one for the ages.

Robinson, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports, picked up on something that has barely been mentioned amongst all the debate over whether the ball should have been kicked out or not in the build-up to the opening goal – Mateusz Klich was offside.

“When you see it in the replay, I don’t think it is a foul (on Kodjia). And then they (Leeds) are in a real predicament here. He (Roberts) looks as though he’s going to put it out and then he sees the balls on. I think the linesman gets it wrong because I actually think he’s offside (Klich),” he told Sky Sports Football (28/04/2019).

It does appear that Klich was marginally offside, and those Leeds fans who were against the decision to let Villa score will surely only love the fact that this is yet another aspect of the memorable incident that will annoy Villa fans.

كلوب أشاد بالثنائي ديوجو جوتا وشيردان شاكيري، بعد تألقهما بمجرد دخولهما في مواجهة وست هام الماضية، بعدما صنع السويسري هدف الفوز للبرتغالي.

وقال: “جوتا في أفضل عمر، 23 عامًا ولديه خبر وثقة بالنفس، نحن لا نعيق أي لاعب في البداية، هم يحتاجون فقط إلى وقت للتكيف والانسجام، لكن جوتا كنت أعلم أنه لن يستغرق وقتًا طويلًا، بسبب طريقة لعب ولفرهامبتون ومعرفته بالدوري الإنجليزي”.
