Having joined the Addicks on a free in the summer, the 5-cap Montserrat international will surely be considered one of the best signings of the season; there isn’t an award for that unfortunately, but he will undoubtedly receive recognition at club level if not from the EFL, who he clearly feels a tad bitter towards now.

Rangers are reportedly eyeing a move for Andre Gray, but is he the right man to possibly replace Alfredo Morelos?

What’s the story?

According to The Evening Times, Steven Gerrard is considering a loan approach for Gray, who has scored nine times for Watford this season.

The report continues that Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Greg Stewart are all expected to become Rangers players this summer, and that Gray is now a target as well.

The 27 year-old cost Watford £18m two years ago but has struggled to hit the back of the net consistently, which begs the question; why on Earth would Rangers want to sign him?

A dreadful signing

A recent report in The Express said Morelos is on “thin ice” after his red card in the Old Firm, so one would have to assume Gray is being targeted as a possible replacement for the Colombian.

However, the problem is that there is nothing in Gray’s past to suggest he can come anywhere close to the 29 goals Morelos has bagged this campaign.

Gray has struck 30 goals in a season once in his career, in the fifth tier of English football in 2013/14, and he did break the 20-goal barrier with 23 Championship strikes in the 2015/16 season, per Transfermarkt.

Since entering the top flight though, he has mustered ten, five and nine goals in the last three seasons, a truly woeful scoring record of just 24 league goals in three whole years..

There seems to be an assumption that any striker capable of scoring a few goals down south will be unstoppable in the SPFL, and Jermain Defoe has certainly looked comfortably since his move to Ibrox, but the difference is Defoe actually scored goals in the Premier League.

Gray has struggled to be anything more than an average top flight player, and given that he would likely want to become the highest-paid payer at Ibrox – he currently makes £70,000-a-week, per Sportrac – this is a move Gerrard and the Gers should steer well clear of.

Leeds’ visit to Portman Road should have been one of the most routine performances of the season.

The result didn’t matter as both teams’ fates were already sealed, but it granted an opportunity for the Whites to regain confidence ahead of the playoffs against the worst team in the division.

Confidence killer

Not only did the Yorkshire club lose to Ipswich on Sunday, they did so in a fashion that would dampen the confidence of every player on the pitch.

The Tractor Boys played the last 10 minutes with 10 men after Luke Chambers’ red card, but they still managed to find a last-minute winner to harm the spirits of their opposition.

Bielsa didn’t opt to rotate his squad in this game ahead of the playoffs. Leeds were at full strength and still failed to overcome the team rooted to the bottom of the table even after their red card.

Both ends will suffer

Two players, in particular, will have had their confidence destroyed by Leeds’ visit to Portman Road.

Kemar Roofe and Kiko Casilla both had awful games on Sunday, and this may affect the club’s playoff chances.

Both are positions where confidence plays a huge part in individual performances on the pitch, and the duo will be bereft of faith in their abilities after the weekend.

The striker skied a penalty, whilst the Spaniard had two significant errors which led to opposition goals.

This has come at the worst possible point of the season as the Whites head into the playoffs. The Ipswich game should’ve been a chance for Bielsa and co to take stock and figure out their plan against Derby next week.

Instead, they watched the worst possible outcome unfold, enduring another defeat while two important players at either end suffered huge mental knock-backs.

With the added pressure of the playoffs, it remains to be seen if Roofe and Casilla will recover from their mistakes. Hopefully, they can take solace in the fact that the errors didn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Athletic Bilbao are set to give up on signing Fernando Llorente this summer after Tottenham Hotspur’s run to the Champions League final, per Fichajes.

What’s the word?

Llorente has played a key role in helping Spurs to the showpiece, scoring the decisive goal in the aggregate quarter-final victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and changing the game when introduced as a substitute against Ajax in the last four.

His contract expires this summer and it remains to be seen if the club will look to extend his deal.

But Fichajes claim that Bilbao, with whom Llorente spent eight years between 2005 and 2013, are set to shelve their plans for a reunion with the 34-year-old this summer.

In January earlier this year, Bilbao’s chairman told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser (via Daily Mail) that he wanted to sign Llorente, but the latest report from Fichajes suggests that the La Liga side have now made a u-turn.

That may be down to their belief that the forward will be offered a new contract in north London, though The Sun claim that he will be released on a free transfer upon the expiration of his current deal.

Reward his heroics

This is the perfect time for Spurs to reward Llorente’s heroics.

No, he is not the most complete striker, nor is he anywhere near as good as Harry Kane but very few strikers on the planet are.

And his performances in the Champions League this season should surely be enough to earn him a new deal.

The lure of a return to the Basque Country will surely have appealed to Llorente but, with Bilbao seemingly pulling out of the race, there is no competition for Spurs to fight off.

Handing him a new contract, even if it is just a pay-as-you-play deal is the right thing to do; if they didn’t have Llorente, Spurs would not be playing in the Champions League final, after all, as they’d have been eliminated at the Etihad Stadium.

Crystal Palace secured a 12th-placed finish with their thrilling 5-3 victory over Bournemouth on the final day and, having ended their term on a solid run of form once again, will be targeting a much stronger start to the 2019/20 campaign in the hope that they can make the top ten next time around.

With Michy Batshuayi returning to Chelsea, it’s clear that the Eagles need a new striker this summer if they’re to realise their ambition of competing with the likes of Leicester and West Ham, although club legend Clinton Morrison has indicated that the key to such an achievement is already at the club.

What did he say?

Well, speaking to Football London, the former striker said:

“I feel we are good enough to finish in the top half of the table, but I think we have got to try and keep hold of Wilf (Zaha).

“He is the key to everything. I know people put a lot of onus on him, but he is a special player.

“The fans love him, the young kids love him and he is a role model and everyone looks up to him. He is a nice guy too.”

Keeping the ‘key’

The culmination of the season at Selhurst Park a week-and-a-half ago means Zaha exit rumours have begun to rear their ugly heads again, although this time the player has added fuel to the fire by expressing his desire to play Champions League football.

Currently in his prime, the 26-year-old will undoubtedly have no shortage of suitors in the coming months having had another excellent campaign in red and blue, but the Eagles won’t let him fly the nest that easily.

المدرب الألماني قاد ليفربول للتويج باللقب في الموسم الماضي، بعد 30 عامًا لم يتوج خلالها الريدز بالبريميرليج.

كلوب أجرى مقابلة مطولة مع نجم الريدز السابق جيمي ريدناب، في صحيفة “ديلي ميل البريطانية.

ريدناب: “ما مدى صعوبة العمل على التكتيكات مع فريقك الآن يورجن؟ هل لديك حتى الوقت للقيام بذلك؟ في مانشستر سيتي، استخدمت خطة 4-2-4”.
