Wolves transfer update on Costa

Wolves are reportedly eyeing up a move for Samu Costa in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Neves may leave

As per the Daily Express, Arsenal are reportedly considering using Ainsley Maitland-Niles as a makeweight in a deal to try and sign Ruben Neves.

If the Portugal international does end up leaving the Midlands club, then they will have to try and find a suitable replacement, and Costa seems to fit into a similar mould.

The Latest: Wolves eye Costa

According to Record (via Sport Witness), the Molineux faithful are reportedly eyeing a move to try and sign Costa, and there is a belief that they would be willing to pay the €25m (£21.4m) required fee in order to secure his services.

However, there is no indication that they are definitely going to pay that sum just yet, and that could well hinge on whether Neves ends up staying or going to the Emirates Stadium.

The Verdict: Costa not adequate Neves replacement

While Costa is a very good and promising player in his own right, having represented the Portuguese national team at youth level, and helped Almeria reach the La Liga 2 play-offs while on loan from Braga, he would not be an adequate replacement for Neves.

Neves has been a key player for the Wanderers over the past few seasons, from being part of the squad which won promotion up to the Premier League back in 2018 and then being a mainstay in the team ever since.

He averaged more tackles (2.4), interceptions (1.8), shots (1.9), passes (54.9) and long balls (5.3) a game in the top flight than both Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho in the 2020/21 term (WhoScored), further showing his importance.

Costa also showed his ability to win the ball back in La Liga 2, winning no fewer than 8.1 of his duels per match, while also averaging 2.1 clearances, 1.5 interceptions and 1.4 tackles per appearance, but perhaps lacks that extra bit of passing quality that Neves possesses, having averaged a mere 0.4 key passes a game (Sofascore).

If WWFC were looking to sign Costa, then they should do so knowing that Neves will stay as well and thus strengthen the competition in the central midfield position, rather than replacing him with the 20-year-old.

Pakistan draw first blood in close encounter

Having whitewashed England 3-0 at home, Sri Lanka was thwarted by Pakistan in the thriller of an opening game of the three-nation ARY Gold Cup

Agha Akbar08-Apr-2001Having whitewashed England 3-0 at home, Sri Lanka was thwarted by Pakistan in the thriller of an opening game of the three-nation ARY Gold Cup. It was a close run thing, but eventually the Lankan challenge to a modest Pakistan total of 255 fizzled out, by a mere 16 runs. The new Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis was an inspiration on the field. He led by example, bowling fast and taking wickets, four in all, but more importantly when it mattered most.Sharjah always has a rather refreshing effect on the Pakistanis, and Younis having a fresh start as captain, for the first time in his own right, couldn’t have wished for a better one. He won the toss and took crucial wickets, the most important of them being that of rival captain Sanath Jayasuriya in the very first over, to stop the Lankan run chase in its tracks. The Man of the Match award though went to Saeed Anwar, for his 90 off 117 deliveries, 10 short of what would have been his eighth hundred in the desert oasis, but still it was the highest innings of the match. It, however, was the Pakistan attack, which lived up to its reputation of defending whatever totals its batting line-up had built. And surely, it was 25 to 30 runs short of what they would have liked to put on the board considering the kind of start they had. The so-called slog-overs, the last 10 of the 50, had yielded only 56 with five wickets lost in the bargain. But a charged-up Waqar Younis made up for that, getting a wicket on his second ball, trapping the hard-hitting Jayasuriya leg before with a fast and straight one. The Lankans made a strong comeback through that pocket dynamo Romesh Kaluwitharana and a sedate Marvan Atapattu. Kaluwitharana did have his share of luck for the edges that flew off the bat, to the boundary as Younis quite inexplicably, took the slips off soon after the start. The diminutive Kaluwitharana however was quick to seize the initiative, and in association with Atapattu seemed to be taking the game out of Pakistan’s hands when the duo of off-spinners, Saqlain Mushtaq and his clone Shoaib Malik were introduced into the attack. Young Malik, who had played a little cameo with the bat, contributing a quicksilver 24 off only 20 deliveries and was nimble-footed in the field too, provided the breakthrough by getting Atapattu stumped by Humayun Farhat, the debutant `keeper’s first scalp. Bowling tidily, he accounted for Kaluwitharana as well; clean bowling him when he seemed to be destined for greater things. Three for 101 in the 23rd over, and Pakistan had partially swung it back. From then on wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with Shahid Afridi’s fastish leg-spin bowling sending back Mahela Jayawardene and Kumara Sangakkara. Russel Arnold and Indika de Saram in a 50 run stand partially swung it back in Sri Lanka’s favour, taking the score to 201 in a stand of 50 for the sixth wicket. Younis brought himself back at this stage, and his leg-cutter bowled Arnold, and his straight one on the last delivery of the 44th over proving too good for Muralitharan. Younis for good measure dealt the next vital blow by clean bowling de Saram and though Chaminda Vass tried to make a fight of it, Saqlain made sure that nothing untoward happened by taking the last two wickets in the penultimate over.Younis definitely had his say, but the three spinners – Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Malik and Shahid Afridi – definitely had a big hand in ensuring Pakistan’s triumph. It generally was good for the spinners, for the trio of the Lankan spinners too had set Pakistan back after a rather decent start once Younis had won the toss and quite predictably elected to bat on the placid batting track. The toss was not the only thing that went right for Pakistan to begin with. Soon the openers, Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi, were stroking the ball to all parts of the park.Returning from a groin injury that had ruled him out of the recent Test series against the Black Caps, Anwar seemed to be in sublime touch and started off by hitting Nuwan Zoysa for a couple of boundaries in the second over to get the innings going. Then he was dropped by Atapattu, at 18, a straightforward chance at mid-off. That drop turned out to be a costly lapse as Anwar, on his lucky ground with seven of his 19 hundreds coming here, made the Lankans pay for it.Afridi on the other end was quite visibly trying to be patient, spacing his characteristic lofted drives with singles and defensive strokes. But having made 21 off 18 deliveries, his principal strokes being two fours and a six, off Zoysa and clouted out of the ground at midwicket, he tried to clear the infield, and holed out. Young debutant Imran Farhat too didn’t last long. That brought Inzamam-ul-Haq in, and with Anwar at the other end, the two most seasoned Pakistani campaigners were at the crease. The two between them put on 88 runs for the third wicket when Inzamam went. Anwar and Younis Khan together tried to continue in the same vein but the former got bogged down in the quest for his 20th hundred. Then Anwar and Younis went in quick succession and it was a struggle for the remaining batsmen. They ultimately put on 255, quite a few less than they thought sufficient at that point, but it turned out to be otherwise in the end.

Spurs could yet target ten Hag

According to a report by the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur held a video call with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag before he signed a new contract and he could yet come back on to the club’s radar.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager chase…

Spurs have suffered repeated managerial blows over this last fortnight.

Firstly, the Athletic broke news of Tottenham and their talks with former boss Mauricio Pochettino – but his current club PSG refused to budge on their stance of letting the Argentine leave.

Afterwards, Spurs turned their focus to former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte, but those talks eventually broke down – leaving the Lilywhites back at square one.

The Latest: Spurs could turn to ten Hag…

Now, the Telegraph claim that Erik ten Hag could still come back into focus amid Fabio Paratici’s impending appointment as sporting director/general manager.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Spurs will apparently be starting fresh with a new shortlist and the Italian is said to be overseeing it.

One man who could retain his place as a Tottenham managerial target, though, is ten Hag – with journalist Matt Law stating that Spurs held a video call with the Dutchman before he signed his new deal at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Even though a new candidate list will need to be drawn up amid Paratici’s arrival, it is believed ten Hag could still come back on to Tottenham’s radar.

However, if they are to make a move for him, Spurs would now be forced to pay compensation.

The Verdict: Do it Paratici…

After blows involving Conte and Pochettino, you could make the argument that ten Hag is now Tottenham’s best possible managerial solution factoring in chairman Daniel Levy’s requirements.

Even though pundit Kevin Campbell has doubts over whether he would succeed in the Premier League, despite calling him ‘brilliant’ in his role at Ajax, ten Hag does have one big admirer in Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Indeed, Klopp dubbed him ‘one of the most exciting coaching talents in world football’ (Planet Football), and it’s hard to argue given his impressive career average of 2.07 points per match (Transfermarkt).

He may just be Tottenham’s best hope.

Vics bid for Pura Cup final over before it even began

Victoria’s bid to host the Pura Cup cricket final was over virtually before it had even begun here today despite a dominantopening day against Western Australia

Paul Gough15-Mar-2001Victoria’s bid to host the Pura Cup cricket final was over virtually before it had even begun here today despite a dominantopening day against Western Australia. The Bushrangers, bidding to host the final for the first time since they last lifted the trophy in 1990/91, reduced the Warriors to 8-164 at stumps on day one at theMCG to give themselves a chance of another outright win.But the Vics came into the match not only needing to win outright to host next week’s final against Queensland at the MCG but also needing the Bulls to miss out onfirst innings points in their final round match against New South Wales at the Gabba. However, that dream fell apart when a five wicket haul by Adam Dale helped the Bulls rout the Blues for 140 before Queensland racked up 4-165 by stumps onday one at the Gabba today. That means for the second successive season the Vics will travel to the Gabba for the final, where they have not won outright since 1983/84.Last season the Bushrangers drew the final at the Gabba, giving the Bulls their second successive title.Despite the disappointment of knowing a home final was out of reach, the Vics stuck to their task manfully today after Western Australian skipper Simon Katich andMarcus North combined for a 117 run third wicket stand to threaten Victoria’s dominance. The pair came together at 2-5 after Matthew Inness dismissed Warriors’ openers Scott Meuleman and Mike Hussey in his first two overs. Both came courtesy of late outswingers and catches from Matthew Elliott at second slip with Elliott’s effort to get rid of Meuleman a gem when he dived full lengthtowards his left and took a one hander just above the ground. It then took a dubious decision to break the Katich-North partnership.North was adjudged caught behind off Mick Lewis even though replays showed he had hit a full toss into the ground before it carried through to Bushrangers’keeper Peter Roach. Then after Shaun Marsh, son of former Australian coach Geoff, fell for a duck to the part-time spin of Brad Hodge, Katich was run out for 78 thanks to a brilliantpiece of fielding from Jason Arnberger.Arnberger ran from deep square leg and produced a great throw to Roach which beat a diving Katich as he attempted a second run.Katich did his chances of an Ashes berth no harm, passing the 1000 run mark for the season with today’s knock giving him 1078 runs at 69.53.The Warriors tail then offered little resistance but unfortunately for the Vics it mattered little as the Bulls had already assured themselves of home advantage for nextFriday’s final.

Why Wasim so keen to tour England?

Champion all-rounder, Wasim Akram, has managed to make it into the 20-man provisional list for next month’s tour to England using all hiscontacts

25-Apr-2001Champion all-rounder, Wasim Akram, has managed to make it into the 20-man provisional list for next month’s tour to England using all hiscontacts. But the question is why Wasim is so keen to tour England?Wasim has made four successful tours to England twice as captain. In1987, he was a member of Imran Khan’s tigers who won 1-0 in a five-Test series. He was the leading wicket-taker for Javed Miandad’s partyin 1992.In 1996, Wasim captained Pakistan to 2-0 victory over England theninspired his team to reach the final of the 1999 World Cup where histeam lost a lopsided final to Australia by eight wickets. In England, he has taken 53 wickets for Pakistan at 26.58, animpressive performance by all means. If there was anything left, Wasim achieved that with distinction withhis more than a decade-old association with Lancashire.Overall, Wasim has captured 409 Test and 440 one-day wickets besidesleading Pakistan in 25 Tests while winning 12 and losing eight. He hasalso been a member of the 1992 World Cup winning party. There is nothing left for the demon pace bowler to achieve. But he isstill keen to tour England without realizing that he is not welcome inthe team dressing room presently being captained by his once greatfriend who later turned foe Waqar Younis. And it is certainly notbecause of his all round and match-winning abilities that hisinclusion is being resisted but because he was not sincere to hiscolleagues during his reign as captain. It was his attitude which forced Waqar to led a successful nineplayers rebellion against him in 1994. Not only Waqar, but othersenior players had problems with Wasim and that’s precisely why theyjoined the revolt. When Wasim took over the charge again in 1998, intentionally orunintentionally under bowled the great pace bowler. In the second Testat Hobart against Australia, Wasim tried every bowler except Waqar asAustralia achieved more than 350 in the fourth innings to win the Testby four wickets. Then in the 1999 World Cup, Waqar was played in just one match whichforced the paceman to accuse Wasim of deliberately destroying hiscareer.Although the prospects of Wasim making the team look bleak, he willcertainly face isolation and probably humiliation if Waqar surrendersbefore the `strong recommendations’ and agrees to take him to England.Wasim has learnt all the tricks in the trade from his maestro ImranKhan. But what he has forgotten is that Imran was wise enough to callit a day after the World Cup when he realized the harsh reality thathe was not wanted for the 1992 tour to England. If Wasim is intelligent, he should follow in the footsteps of Imranand quit with honour, grace and dignity.

Ashley Preece drops Villa update on Guilbert

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has dropped a major update on Frederic Guilbert’s future at Aston Villa this summer.

What’s the story?

After falling behind Matty Cash in the pecking order following the right-back’s arrival from Championship side Nottingham Forest last summer, Guilbert eventually ended up joining Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg on loan until the end of the season.

Now, Preece has claimed that while the Frenchman will return to Villa Park, and is “expected to stay”, he could be someone who actually ends up leaving if a team can offer him genuine first-team football.

He said: “The full-back situation is an intriguing one knowing Matt Targett doesn’t have competition at left-back while, over on the opposite flank, Frederic Guilbert will return to Villa to rival Cash. Guilbert, although expected to stay, could viably move on should an interested club guarantee him first-team football after his impressive four-month stint on-loan at Strasbourg.”

Villa must sell him

With just two Villa appearances to his name last season, it’s fair to say Guilbert has been a bit of a disaster at Villa Park over these past 12 to 18 months, so much so that he made the loan move to Strasbourg.

There, the 26-year-old became a regular, and put in some decent performances, scoring once and providing four assists in 13 Ligue 1 games.

But while Guilbert showed some impressive signs of a return to form, it appears Dean Smith has already made his mind up about the Frenchman’s quality.

In fact, The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans, even said just last year: “I expect the thinking behind trying to move on Guilbert is that, (Ahmed) Elmohamady can cover any injuries at full-back, and also can’t really be moved on for any money, so Villa could get something back on Guilbert at least. I agree, there’s potential, but it seems like Smith has seen enough and favours others.”

Earning around £40k-a-week at Villa, Guilbert is earning a decent sum of money for someone who is just going to play back-up to Cash, and the Midlands club would surely be better off getting rid of his wages and bringing in a much younger right-back to compete – or, simply promote someone like Kaine Kesler from the academy ranks.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/aston-villa-dean-smith-transfer-window-premier-league-villa-park-emi-buendia-gregg-evans-gossip-rumours-update-news” title=”Read the latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news!”]

Guilbert simply picked up a pay-cheque for either sitting on the bench or not even being named in the match-day squad for the first-half of the season that he spent with Villa, and NSWE simply can’t afford to let that happen again.

It might seem harsh to sell a player without taking another look at him on loan, but that’s exactly what the club should do.

Villa should make the ruthless call and let him go.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has dropped an exciting transfer update…
