Though technically they would still remain alive even after their encounter with South Africa on Sunday, they would have to wait for the result of the last league game, between Sri Lanka and South Africa.Of course, if Pakistan win both their remaining matches, they would not have to go through that agonising wait. There are too many combinations and permutations to be discussed. The fact is that the issue of which two sides go to the final is likely to hang in the balance till the very last game.There are a few things going for Pakistan. They take on Sri Lanka on the pitch to the right of the main pavilion. It doesn’t offer the same prodigious spin to the Sri Lankan spinners that made them such a handful against South Africa. And then Pakistan meet South Africa on the pitch where the latter were mauled so badly – bowled out for a mere 174 as Chandana, Muralitharan and Jayasuriya ran riot in conditions helping slow bowlers.This makes both the Sri Lankans and the South Africans a bit uneasy, but it is the throw of the dice and not by design. The character of the newly-laid pitches was a surprise even for the organisers. Another absorbing twist is that by the time of the final, the pitch on the right should be worn enough to afford similar purchase to the spinners.With Sri Lanka now in front, needing just one win from their two remaining games to make it to the final, this factor has added to the worries of Pakistan coach Mudassar Nazar.Mudassar is concerned about the balance of the Pakistan team. Saqlain Mushtaq went for 80 runs in his 10 overs in the loss against South Africa, Shoaib Malik has not yet been given an outing, and Shahid Afridi has been sent down the order, where he is not the same force, to give Saeed Anwar a decent run to re-establish his credentials. This has meant that Waqar Younis has only five bowlers at his disposal, with no fallback should one of them get a beating or an injury.Mudassar admits that he has no simple answers. “In my playing days, we never played without six bowlers”, he said, reminding me that he used to finish his quota of 10 overs before the regular bowlers. But Anwar has now got the runs, and he is “our best player against the spinners.”Shahid Afridi is a misfit down the order. Muralitharan, who got him cheaply the other day, relishes bowling to him. Afridi is not sure of his feet against the spinners, while he plays the seamers well at top of the order. Since the management doesn’t want to drop Saeed Anwar, they could rest young Imran Nazir and Mohammad Sami, send Afridi up the order, and include Saqlain Mushtaq and Shoaib Malik.It would be cruel to sit Nazir and Sami out, for they are immensely talented and ones for the future. But this would give the side a three-pronged pace and seam attack (Waqar, Wasim Akram, Abdul Razzaq), and three spinners (Saqlain, Malik, Afridi). With plenty of all-rounders, it would not disturb the balance in the batting.But for the opening encounter of the double league, Mudassar would not have changed the winning combination against Sri Lanka. Against South Africa, a couple of changes would give the bowling more teeth.As far as the Sri Lankans are concerned, changes are less likely now that they have a good win behind them. They have got their eleven right, and it has gelled well to lead them to a famous comeback. With all teams feeling insecure and fighting for survival, some highly competitive cricket is on the cards.

The Lowdown: Wingers wanted

Given the signing of Andros Townsend, and what looks to be the imminent capture of Demarai Gray (BBC Sport), it is clear that the Goodison Park faithful are looking to sign wingers.

Whether the Merseyside club would stop there is another question, but Rafa Benitez clearly wants to add more width to his team ahead of the new 2021/22 season.

The Latest: Boga race

As per The Daily Mail, Atalanta have joined the Toffees in what looks like to be a long race to secure the signature of Boga from Sassuolo, having already had a £15.5m bid rejected.

Leeds United and Crystal Palace have also shown interest in signing the Ivory Coast international, who only has two years left on his current deal.

The Verdict: Avoid

Given that Townsend has already signed, and that the Blues could well be following that up by signing Gray, it would not seem a wise idea to go after Boga as well.

The 24-year-old is a promising player, but only scored a mere four goals and made just two assists in 28 games in total over all competitions in the last campaign (Transfermarkt), which are not really impressive numbers for an attacker in a side known for their fast, expansive football.

Nonetheless, EFC should now be using their transfer budget to invest in more important areas of the squad, such as another striker to lighten the goalscoring load on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Yerry Mina e Edu Dracena estão confirmados como titulares do Palmeiras para a partida de ida contra o Novorizontino, às 19h deste domingo, pelas quartas de final do Paulistão, em Novo Horizonte. Eles jogarão juntos porque Vitor Hugo recebeu o terceiro cartão amarelo contra a Ponte Preta, mas há quem diga que esta é a dupla ideal do clube neste momento.

Na média de notas LANCE! do Paulistão, por exemplo, Mina e Dracena estão um pouco à frente de Vitor Hugo. O colombiano tem média de 6,3 em quatro jogos, enquanto Dracena acumula 6,1 em oito jogos e Vitor Hugo 5,8 em dez aparições. A melhor média da posição é de Antônio Carlos, 6,7, mas com apenas duas partidas disputadas.

Curiosamente, Mina e Dracena formaram dupla pouquíssimas vezes no Palmeiras: apenas três, sendo uma em 2016 e duas em 2017. وتابع: “إذا كنت تريد تحقيق فوز كبير، يجب أن تكون مستعدًا لخسارة كبيرة، هذا ما فعلناه اليوم، الأمر كله يتعلق برد الفعل، لا يمكننا الرد في الدوري غدًا، لكن في العام المقبل يمكننا ذلك”.

وأكد: “لقد أخبرتهم بالفعل 500 مليون مرة، هذه أفضل مجموعة تعاملت معها على الإطلاق، إنه لمن دواعي سروري أن أذهب إلى العمل كل صباح، نحن بحاجة إلى أساس متين للرد على الهزائم، لقد احتجنا إلى مزيد من الاتساق في النصف الأول من الموسم”.

With a mere four goals and just four assists in 173 games for Spurs over all competitions across the last seven consecutive seasons (Transfermarkt), the signing of Winks would not really be an inspiring one for the Merseyside club, and it is also arguably a position which they do not need to prioritise.

Rafa Benitez already has the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan, Andre Gomes and Tom Davies who he can call upon in the centre of midfield, and so the Toffees should perhaps be focusing on other areas of the pitch.
