Robinson urges Leeds to sign Traore

Paul Robinson has offered his thoughts on Leeds’ pursuit of Wolves forward Adama Traore.

What’s the talk?

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has admitted that he would love to see Marcelo Bielsa’s side sign Adama Traore from fellow Premier League side Wolves this summer. Leeds and Spurs are both reportedly interested in signing the forward, who is said to be valued at around £45m by his current club.

Robinson told MOTLeeds:

“That’s good money. He’s a good player, I rate him.

“He’s not the finished article yet but he’s a lot more polished than when he left Middlesbrough. He was a bit rough around the edges, his final ball wasn’t there and it was just his raw pace and power.

“Now, he’s combined that with intelligence and delivery of the ball final with goals.

“He’s a player that I’ve admired for the last couple of seasons because he’s really come on. I’d love to see him at Leeds.”

Imagine him and Raphinha

Victor Orta must work hard to secure a deal for Traore in the coming weeks, with Robinson outlining why he would be an excellent signing for the club.

He still has room for growth and development, but already has the pace, power, and quality to make an impact in the Premier League. The Leeds chief could form a terrifying attacking line-up by adding Traore to the club’s wing options alongside Raphinha.

Traore has provided six goals and 11 assists in the past two seasons for Wolves in the top-flight, showing that he has been able to add end product to his all around play. To highlight these qualities, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp previously hailed Traore as unplayable. He said: “He is unplayable in moments, it’s unbelievable. What a player – it’s not only him but he’s so good.”

He only managed two assists in the Premier League last term but averaged 1.5 key passes per game – more than the 1.3 he averaged the previous year when he registered nine assists. This could be linked to Raul Jimenez’s injury, with the Mexican scoring 17 goals in the 2019/20 season before only playing 10 times the following season due to his unfortunate head collision.

Therefore, it may have been his teammates at fault for his unimpressive assist total. He could fare better at Leeds, with the likes of Raphinha, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison alongside him – who managed 31 goals between them.

Raphinha racked up six goals and nine assists for the Whites in the Premier League, whilst averaging 2.1 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game. Traore, meanwhile, averaged 1.5 key passes and a mouth-watering 4.1 dribbles completed per game.

This shows how effective the pair are at running at defenders and creating chances for their teammates in the top-flight. So, imagine both of them in the same team, sprinting at opposition players with the ball and getting supporters off their seats in anticipation of a moment of magic. It could be terrifying for opposition teams.

Cricinfo staff26-Jun-2008Ireland will head into the third and final one-dayer looking to square the series after the second ODI in Dublin was washed out without a ball being bowled. West Indies won the rain-affected opener – their first ODI in three years – with a host of their debutantes impressing. The second one-dayer, which was to have been played back-to-back, couldn’t even get off the ground. Before the two sides meet for the third match on Sunday, the two sides meet for a Twenty20 on Friday. It will be West Indies’ first dart at the shortest form of the game and will generate much-needed practice given they had automatically qualified for the tournament through qualifying for the 50-over Women’s World Cup in Australia next year.

West Ham open talks with LFC striker Origi

West Ham have reportedly opened talks with Divock Origi regarding a potential £15m move away from Liverpool this summer.

The Lowdown: Origi a bit-part player

The Belgian has enjoyed a curious Reds career, scoring some huge goals, including one in the 2019 Champions League final win over Tottenham and being hailed as ‘unbelievably important’ by Jurgen Klopp.

However, he has been increasingly on the fringes at Anfield, playing just 182 minutes of Premier League action in the whole of last season.

That means a summer exit could be on the cards, and a fresh development has emerged regarding the 26-year-old’s future.

The Latest: West Ham open talks

According to Football Insider, West Ham have started ‘preliminary talks’ with Origi as they eye up a £15m move for the striker.

The Hammers are thought to be working on a ‘cut-price’ deal for the Belgium international, hoping that Liverpool are willing to accept that amount, with the Reds originally demanding £20m but latterly revising their asking price.

The Verdict: Right time to move on

Origi will always be appreciated by Reds supporters for the impact he has made in key moments – massive goals against Spurs, Barcelona, Everton and Newcastle all stand out – but it is time for him to move on.

Too often in recent years, he hasn’t offered nearly enough in attack, scoring just seven league goals in the last three seasons.

With the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino all undoubtedly ahead of Origi in the pecking order, it is hard to see where regular playing time will come for the Belgian moving forward.

Howey: Adam Armstrong will score goals for Southampton

Former Newcastle United star Steve Howey believes that Adam Armstrong will score goals in the Premier League for Southampton.

Armstrong completed his move to Southampton earlier this week, signing a four-year deal with the Saints.

The 24-year-old was in fine form for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship last season as he scored 64 goals and 19 assists in 160 games for the Ewood Park outfit.

Southampton finished 15th in the Premier League last season accumulating 43 points in the process. Manager Ralph Hassenhuttl has moved to strengthen his side this summer bringing in six new players, with Armando Broja, Theo Walcott, Tino Livramento, Romain Perraud, Dynel Simeu and Adam Armstrong all putting pen to paper on deals at St Mary’s.

After impressive seasons in the Championship, Howey reckons Armstrong will be successful in front of goal in the Premier League.

He told the Transfer Tavern: “I think the lad will score goals and I really wish him the best of luck.  People like him and Ivan Toney, it just goes to show they weren’t given an opportunity at Newcastle and they’ve worked so hard to get back and you’ve get to say fair play to them, ‘you deserve your chance’, and I think both of them will score goals.”

Both Toney and Armstrong were the two top scorers in the Championship last season, with Toney netting 33 goals and Armstrong getting 28.

Pietersen shows promise in first impression

The sense of destiny that Kevin Pietersen somehow brings to his batting translated seamlessly into his first day as England captain

The sense of destiny that Kevin Pietersen somehow brings to his batting translated seamlessly into his first day as England captain, as he enjoyed the most blissful coronation that any new leader could hope for. With the glaring exception of Graeme Smith’s first-ball reprieve at gully, everything that could go right for his side did go right, as South Africa contributed to their own downfall on a day that revealed just how fine the line is between success and failure in this most fickle of sports. As first challenges go, a dead-rubber contest at the scene of your greatest batting triumph is a fairly pleasant way to begin, and Pietersen nestled into his job with the enthusiasm and confidence of a man who knows that The Oval will forever be his fiefdom. Not even he will be kidding himself that it will be this easy forever – Ahmedabad in December will be a vastly different prospect, for starters. And yet, the first impressions were impressive. He led his side with a smile, and for a heady afternoon, the gloom that has enveloped English cricket this past month was lifted.Sportsmen like to claim that they make their own luck, and in Pietersen’s case, that has generally involved hours and hours in the nets, perfecting the sort of outrageous strokes that thrilled Edgbaston during his 94 last week. As far as the captaincy is concerned, however, it’s all been a little bit more seat-of-the-pants. He’s admitted to knowing next to nothing about reading pitches, and until he’s had more experience in the job, his tactical acumen is sure to be found wanting when the going gets tougher. But today Pietersen nonetheless revealed himself to be a lucky captain, and as Michael Vaughan will acknowledge after his contrasting emotions at Edgbaston in 2005 and 2008, that is not an aspect of the job that can be downplayed in any way. “I don’t think he got challenged that much, but a lot of things went right for him and us,” said the main man of England’s day, Steve Harmison. That Harmison was fit and firing was perhaps Pietersen’s biggest stroke of luck of all, and yet, without careful handling from a man whose inter-personal skills have often been called into question, his presence could easily have backfired – as it so frequently did for Vaughan in his second incarnation as England captain.Instead Pietersen backed his man to the hilt, insisting Harmison took the new ball for the first time since his delinquent performance against West Indies at Old Trafford last June. His response was positive, just as Andrew Flintoff’s had been when he was asked to bat at No. 6, and in a trice, two of the most crucial members of England’s dressing-room had been won over. A timely text message on the eve of the game ramped up Harmison’s sense of belonging, and left him feeling, in his own words, as excited as if it were Christmas Eve.Those are the little details that can make or break the unity of a team. In his most symbolic display of a new beginning, Pietersen did away with the mid-pitch huddle that had become a trademark of Vaughan’s reign. Rather than get his bonding out of the way in one fell swoop, Pietersen opted instead for regular contact with as many members of his team as he could reach. Today he was not called upon to make many grand gesticulations from mid-on, but arms around the shoulder and taps on the backside were in abundance. He seems determined to spread the love in his new-look and new-feel England.”He’s up for it!” said Harmison. “He’s enjoying his challenge as captain. Obviously he’s only done it for one day, but it’s his enthusiasm for cricket, rather than the job itself, that is going to make him a good captain. He’s going to bounce around the field, and he’s always got ideas and he’s always behind you. You can’t ask for more than that.”Contrary to expectations, especially given one or two less-than-enthusiastic remarks from some of England’s senior batsmen, Pietersen’s first day as leader was their most united in the field since, arguably, Andrew Flintoff carried his men to victory in Mumbai in 2005-06 on a wing, a prayer and a chorus of Johnny Cash. That match in itself should serve as a cautionary tale, given the disasters that befell England soon afterwards, but today’s sense of enjoyment and renewal could yet prove to be contagious.”He’s not done it before so we needed to help him,” said Harmison. “There were 11 captains out there, and a lot of us helped him, not so much because he needed it, but because he’s still learning. We need to lift our own game to make sure we stand by him, and not let him die in a hole when things don’t go right.””Eleven captains”, funnily enough, was the demand that Vaughan made during his own captaincy debut five years ago. Though his own first day in the job was perhaps as far removed from Pietersen’s as is sportingly possible, the desire to raise their game for their skipper was precisely what hauled England back into contention in that memorable series. This time, of course, the deal has already been sealed, and nothing that England achieve in this contest can compensate for the losses at Headingley and Edgbaston. But, if the first impressions are anything to go by, Pietersen is putting himself out there for his team, and they are responding.
