The Lowdown: Mass exodus

As per Football Insider, Niall Huggins is in advanced talks to join Sunderland on a permanent deal.

It looks as if Marcelo Bielsa is looking to trim his squad first of all before bringing any more new signings in, with less than two weeks until the window shuts.

Senior players like Pablo Hernandez and Ezgjan Alioski have also departed, and it looks as though three more youngsters are set to follow in their footsteps.

The Latest: More out the door?

According to Football Insider, Poveda, Gotts and Hosannah could well follow Huggins out of the door at Elland Road, as per a club source.

They all failed to make the 20-man squad for the 5-1 away loss to Manchester United on the opening weekend of the new 2021/22 Premier League season, and so may all need moves away in order to gain more regular game time.

The Verdict: Sell sell sell

The Yorkshire club have a big enough squad now to cope with the top flight, and selling these players could help raise some funds to potentially bring one or two more top quality additions in before the window closes.

Poveda is the more senior out of the three, but only managed a mere 16 matches in total over all competitions last term (Transfermarkt).

Gotts impressed while on loan at Salford City last campaign, as manager Richie Wellens claimed that he was ‘outstanding’ in one performance in January in particular.

However, his game time at the Peacocks has also been very limited (Transfermarkt), and so should also be moved on.

Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan batsman, has been signed up by the Dolphins, the KwaZulu-Natal-based franchise, to play in the South African domestic circuit for two seasons.The Dolphins’ CEO Cassim Docrat said he was thrilled to have got Jayasuriya on board. “Sanath arrives in South Africa in the first week of November,” he told South Africa’s . “He will be playing for us when the one-day series kicks off in mid-November.”Jayasuriya confirmed he had signed a contract with the Dolphins but refused to reveal his fee. “I’m bound by my contract not to make any statements about the financial side of the deal,” Jayasuriya told South Africa’s . “All I can say is that I will play for the Dolphins and help change things around over the next two seasons.”Jayasuriya said he was joining the team for a purpose. “I’m still part of the Sri Lankan one-day and the Twenty20 squads. Chennai were kept to 123 for 9 and Hyderabad knocked off the runs in 19.3 overs thanks largely to Ambati Rayudu’s 53 and 36 from opener K Shashank Nag. Chennai’s was a disappointing batting performance for once, with only C Hemanth Kumar’s 35 standing out down the order.

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge insists that Tottenham Hotspur were looking to sell Davinson Sanchez at the beginning of the summer.

Spurs have been attempting to restructure their playing squad this summer and have seen a number of players leave the club.

The club have sold Juan Foyth to Villarreal, Toby Alderweireld to Qatari side Al-Duhail SC, and Joe Hart to Celtic, while Erik Lamela moved to Sevilla in a part-exchange deal that has seen Bryan Gil join Spurs. Danny Rose and Paulo Gazzaniga have also left on free transfers.

Bridge now reports that Sanchez was seen as an expendable asset at the beginning of the summer but there may now be some reticence to move him on after the way he has begun the season.

Indeed, he played exceptionally well in the friendly against Arsenal, while he has also played in the first two Premier League games of the season, against Manchester City and Wolves, with Spurs keeping two consecutive clean sheets in a pair of 1-0 wins.

Bridge said: “Sanchez was probably the one they were going to look at to offload. However, he played very, very well against Arsenal, he was really good against City.

“I think the problem with Davinson Sanchez, though, is that we know he’s good but he has a real rocket in him.”

Adama Traore and Ruben Neves are expected to remain at Wolves beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline, according to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers. 

The lowdown

It was reported last week that Tottenham Hotspur, now managed by former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, had made an unsuccessful loan offer for the Spanish winger, while the Portugal midfielder has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal over the course of the summer.

Neves has played every Premier League minute so far under Bruno Lage, while Traore has been on the pitch for all but three minutes.

Spiers tweeted that ‘as things stand’, he’s ‘not anticipating’ late exits for either Traore or Neves. He does accept that ‘a huge bid’ could alter the situation but there’s ‘nothing active at the moment’.

The focus appears to be on incomings, with Renato Sanches ‘plus maybe one more’ targeted on deadline day.

The verdict

If Wolves were to sell either of these players, it would have been wisest to do so in the early part of the transfer window. They wouldn’t necessarily want to be scrambling around for replacements at this late stage.

You do wonder whether cashing in on Traore would be smart given his rather paltry return of 10 goals in 135 appearances, but maybe Spurs’ loan proposal is the only concrete offer Wolves have received.
