The idea mirrors another promotion a few years ago in which New Zealand fans were encouraged to “black out” in support of their team, nicknamed the Black Caps.However, the concept has angered people in New Zealand and abroad, forcing an apology from Otago Cricket’s chief executive Ross Dykes. “We just wanted a catchy phrase to help sell the game,” Dykes said. “It was all based around the association of the colour with cricket.”The former commentator, Billy Ibadulla, said the idea was ill-concevied. “The connection between the phrase and white clothing is stupid at best, and grievous at worst,” Ibadulla said.Despite the apologies, WIPA has vehemently condemned the phrase. “This slogan which, in our view, may be reasonably perceived to be loaded with racial innuendoes has quite naturally raised eyebrows in many places, including New Zealand itself,” WIPA said in a statement.”It comes at a time when the spectre of racial intolerance is insidiously and, at times, openly appearing in major sporting events. We at WIPA and its members wish to disassociate ourselves from any perceived contributing factor.”Whatever may be the reasons advanced by the bodies in New Zealand for this promotional approach, innocently as some may claim, it appears to be totally insensitive and myopic as to the ramifications. We request that the West Indies Cricket Board take up this issue as amatter of urgency with New Zealand Cricket, conveying our deep concern aboutparticipating in an event with such a ‘perceived’ racial slogan.”Sam Guillen, the former wicketkeeper who played Test cricket for both West Indies and New Zealand and now lives in Christchurch, said regardless of Otago Cricket’s intentions, the slogan would raise eyebrows among the West Indies players. “I know exactly how the players will feel,” Guillen told the .”The first thing that will go through their mind is it’s white against black which should never come into sport. Whoever did it will have to go to them and say ‘we didn’t mean it like that’, but it should never have happened.”Not all observers were so strongly against the idea, however. New Zealand’s former batsman Glenn Turner said people could be “too politically correct”. “It’s about the tone. I don’t think anyone had negative intention here,” Turner said. “But whether it’s a bit loose or sloppy is open to comment.”

The Verdict: Overpriced?

While O’Brien is a young player who has shone in the Championship, winning Huddersfield’s Player of the Year award in 2019/20, £13million seems a lot of money to spend on a player who will ultimately be arriving as back-up, rather than a first XI option.

The 22-year-old remains unproven at the top level and he would likely have come in as a squad player, providing opportunities to rest Phillips now that the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ is featuring regularly through international breaks.

It may be that Leeds come back in for O’Brien in the January transfer window or next summer, but there is a feeling that he could be overpriced if they are willing to spend that amount again.

Sunil Joshi picked up his 28th five-for in first-class cricket before openers Robin Uthappa and KB Pawan rattled off the 60-run target in 6.2 overs, shortly before tea on the final day, to hand Karnataka a bonus point. Karnataka are on 13 points from four games but Tamil Nadu, on 12 points, have a game in hand.Baroda’s hopes of saving the game on the final day rested on Connor Williams, who played an uncharacteristic shot to give it away after fighting for 459 minutes. Despite a long-on in place, he charged down to heave Joshi – the eight wicket to fall. Uthappa flicked one through midwicket to bring up the winning runs even as a light drizzle drenched the ground ever so slowly.Baroda, on four points, have three home games coming up and hope to have the services of Irfan and Yusuf Pathan for two of those and Sri Lanka’s Dilhara Fernando, their overseas signing, for the tough clash against Tamil Nadu. As things stand, Tamil Nadu should qualify for the quarter-finals without much fuss and it remains to be seen whether Baroda can push Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh for a spot in the knock-out phase.

An update has emerged on Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips, regarding Manchester City’s interest in his services.

According to Fichajes, Manchester City are lining up a swoop for Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips at the end of the season as a potential Fernandinho replacement.

“To play one season in the Premier League and then build up your international experience while you’re doing that… it’s hard enough adapting just to play in the Premier League.

“I was probably two years at Liverpool before I started even becoming used to and started playing regularly and actually thinking I’m worthy. He’s gone into the Premier League comfortable and confident, he’s just adjusted so easily.

“He’s just taken it all in his stride: unbelievable. Temperament, fitness, quality.

“And I actually think although Leeds play him in that holding role, I like him a bit further ahead with the insurance with someone behind him.”

This highlights the quality the £36m-rated beast has, as he has been able to adapt to playing regular international football for England alongside delivering excellent performances for Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.

He played seven games at the European Championships and averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.82, making 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game.

Therefore, City fans would be delighted with his arrival. He has shown that he can compete in the Premier League and at a major international tournament, suggesting that he has the potential to make the step up to City.

ذكرت تقارير صحفية إيطالية أن أحد أندية الدوري الإيطالي يرغب في التعاقد مع مارسيلو ظهير ريال مدريد السابق.

وفي 30 يونيو الماضي، وضع مارسيلو حدًا لـ16 موسمًا مع ريال مدريد، وأعلن رحيله عن اللوس بلانكوس مع نهاية عقده، ويحق للبرازيلي التوقيع لأي نادٍ بالمجان.

وحسب صحيفة “لا جازيتا ديلو سبورت” الإيطالية، فإن نادي لاتسيو في محادثات بالفعل مع مقربين من مارسيلو.
