Agbonlahor drops claim on ‘strange’ Moyes call

Speaking to Football Insider, talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has made a claim on manager David Moyes and his ‘strange, strange’ call for West Ham United.

The Lowdown: Moyes opts for big in-game decision…

During West Ham’s narrow loss to Manchester United at the weekend, putting a slight dampener on their solid start to the 2021/2022 season, Moyes of course made a big decision.

The Irons were awarded a last gasp penalty for Luke Shaw’s handball – with Moyes then bringing on Mark Noble to take the spot kick over star midfielder Declan Rice.

The club legend then missed his penalty and ultimately squandered a chance to rescue something for West Ham during a thrilling encounter.

The Latest: Agbonlahor drops ‘strange’ claim…

Reacting to this call by Moyes, former Premier League striker Agbonlahor has claimed that it was certainly a ‘strange’ one but it won’t affect the morale in West Ham’s dressing room.

“I think they’ve got good team spirit at the club so they won’t be annoyed,” the talkSPORT pundit explained to FI.

“But there were enough players on the pitch who could have scored it. I found it quite strange when I saw it because Noble is a great set-piece taker but you’re not up to speed of the game. You’re not aware.

“It’s probably something only footballers can explain. When you come on as a sub, it might take you five minutes to get into the game.

“It was just a strange, strange decision. I can understand if it was a last-minute free-kick and you’ve got David Beckham on the bench because he’s the best set-piece taker ever known.

“But for a penalty…Anyone can take a penalty, let’s be honest.”

The Verdict: Bizarre by Moyes…

Bringing on a substitute to take a last second penalty in that pressurised environment is certainly an interesting, if not questionable, move by Moyes.

West Ham will be looking to exact revenge on the Red Devils when they face off again tonight in the Carabao Cup, but for the sake of health for Hammers supporters, let’s hope there’s not more last gasp penalty drama this time.

Australia have suffered a major blow ahead of next month’s tour of South Africa with the fast bowler Stuart Clark ruled out due to an ongoing elbow problem. Clark had surgery six weeks ago to remove bone spurs from his right elbow and was set to return for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match starting on Friday. However, after making what seemed to be a successful comeback in grade cricket on the weekend, Clark suffered swelling in the elbow and was forced to pull out of the state match. It means he will have no opportunity to play for New South Wales before the squad for South Africa is chosen and he is now aiming to return via a Sheffield Shield match starting on February 26.Australia’s chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch confirmed Clark would not be considered for the South Africa tour. “Given the schedule of the Australian team over the next 12 months, including an Ashes series,” Hilditch said, “the national selection panel will be taking a conservative approach in regards to the management of Stuart’s recovery and his return to cricket is prudent.”Stuart has outlined he hopes to play again for New South Wales at the end of February, a decision that will be made in close consultation with Australian and New South Wales medical staff. Unfortunately due to this Stuart will not be considered for selection in the Test squad for South Africa which will be announced next week and leaves for South Africa on 16 February.”The loss of Clark puts a big dent in Australia’s attack, which is already missing Brett Lee due to his foot and ankle surgery, and it is likely Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Doug Bollinger will form the basis of the fast-bowling group. It was in South Africa three years ago that Clark made his Test debut and finished the trip as the Player of the Series having collected 20 wickets at 15.85.He missed the entire home series against South Africa this season, which Australia lost 2-1, and would have added much-needed experience to the side. Clark said he was confident the elbow injury was not a long-term problem and he just needed a little extra time to fully recover.”It was swollen after the [grade] game but that was just what we thought was going to happen, but the swelling just keeps reoccurring every time that I bowl which happened again on Wednesday,” Clark told . “That has them a little concerned, that is not what I need.”Clark said he would consider nominating for the Indian Premier League to help him get some game time under his belt in the lead-up to Australia’s Ashes tour. The first Test against South Africa begins in Johannesburg on February 26.

Flamenguista vira sócio emérito do Vasco; confira detalhes do caso

West Ham receive Jarrod Bowen boost

West Ham’s chances of keeping hold of Jarrod Bowen have received a boost as a major behind-the-scenes claim has emerged this week…

What’s the word?

Earlier in the week, the Independent reported that the Irons’ Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur were one of several clubs monitoring the 24-year-old winger ahead of a possible transfer in the future.

Meanwhile, a move away from the London Stadium for Bowen is something which has been touted by former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, who told Football Insider:

“No disrespect to West Ham but I’m sure another move, if he carries on going the way he’s going, to a bigger club could come.”

However, the chances of that being Spurs are rather slim.

According to Lilywhites insider John Wenham, the Irons would not entertain a single bid from their local rivals for a player of Bowen’s quality.

“Tottenham and West Ham don’t do business. There is no love lost between the two clubs at boardroom level,” he revealed to Football Insider.

“I don’t see West Ham entertaining any bids for Bowen from Tottenham, that one is a non-starter. Tottenham may be interested in him but some clubs just don’t do business.

“I would categorically rule that one out now. Even if West Ham said he was available they would turn down an approach from Tottenham.

“From what I’ve heard from people I know in the industry, I just can’t see that one happening.”

Zero chance

This should come as a massive boost to David Moyes and West Ham as it means they have a greater chance of keeping one of their standout performers in east London.

Bowen may not have gotten off the mark so far this campaign but the former Hull City dynamo, whose former boss Grant McCann dubbed “unplayable”, currently rates as the Hammers’ second-best performer in the Premier League (7.52) behind Michail Antonio (7.84), via WhoScored.

He is also one of their most creative options, averaging a squad-high 2.4 key passes and three dribbles per outing.

Since his £22m move from the Tigers in January 2020, the uncapped Englishman has delivered nine goals and 11 assists across 60 appearances, averaging a direct contribution every 205 minutes – a little over once every two matches, which is rather respectable for a right winger.

On the above evidence, he’s crucial to Moyes and West Ham.

Wenham’s claim that there appears to be absolutely no chance he becomes a Spurs player is certainly going to delight many supporters around the London Stadium.

AND in other news, Moyes could find West Ham’s next Tevez in Jan swoop for “magical” £18m-rated marksman…

'We will aim for World Cup semi-final' – Ekanayake

Thanuga Ekanayake, the chairman of the Sri Lanka women’s selection committee, is confident the tri-nation series in Bangladesh will be the ideal warm-up ahead of the World Cup, where she said Sri Lanka would aim to reach the semi-finals

Cricinfo staff27-Jan-2009Thanuga Ekanayake, the chairman of the Sri Lanka women’s selection committee, is confident the tri-nation series in Bangladesh will be the ideal warm-up ahead of the World Cup, where she said Sri Lanka would aim to reach the semi-finals.”Only one change has been made from the last squad for the West Indies series and all players are in good form and are confident as they did well against West Indies and also were runners-up to India in the Asian series,” Ekanayake told Sri Lanka’s .Sri Lanka won four out of their six matches in the Asia Cup in May last year and beat West Indies 3-2 in November. The tri-nation tournament, which includes the hosts Bangladesh and Pakistan, will be Sri Lanka’s first away series in more than two years.Ekanayake said Sri Lanka will have to well against Pakistan, England and India in the World Cup’s first-round matches to go to the Super Six. In order to perform well in the two World Cups this year, it was important for the players’ to maintain fitness. “Our new trainer Dinendra Jayasinghe, a Sri Lankan-born lady who is Australian qualified, has done her best to keep our players fit during the past six months,” said Ekanayake. “The team’s coach Chitral Mendis and manager Indrani are a great combination and work tirelessly for the team. We also deeply appreciate the support given to women’s cricket by the sport ministry and Sri Lanka Cricket.”We are also hoping to form a pool for a Sri Lanka Women’s ‘A’ team. The SLC-conducted women’s inter-provincial tournament was most helpful in finding talented players.”

WHU prepared to sell Rice

According to Football Insider, West Ham United and GSB are prepared to sell Declan Rice for a fee of £90m as they line up a bid for his replacement.

The Lowdown: Rice in demand

After becoming one of West Ham’s star performers and playing a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, Rice is a player in demand.

Both Manchester United (ESPN) and Chelsea (The Sun) were linked with his services during the summer, but the 22-year-old stayed put at the London Stadium.

The Latest: Hammers open to Rice sale

As per this latest report, the Hammers are contemplating the possibility of selling the midfielder.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider that GSB would sell Rice for £90m and are already looking at potential replacements.

The Verdict: Sell at the right time

Rice has become a superstar with the Hammers over the past few years. Despite his young age, he has made 152 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt), and he has been vital to the rise up the Premier League table.

Unfortunately for the London outfit, he has turned down their approaches in regards to a new contract, indicating he is looking to make the next step in his career eventually.

As it stands though, he has two years left on his contract, and the Irons have an option to extend his deal for an extra 12 months. Currently valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, his potential future transfer must be timed to perfection – wait too long and the Irons could lose out on a massive deal if he does not extend his terms.

As they long as they can replace with him with a quality alternative, losing Rice for a huge fee in the near future may not be quite the gut punch it would feel like for the fans.

In other news, West Ham are interested in signing this Premier League striker.

Karthik takes his chance

Kris Srikkanth told Dinesh Karthik bluntly what he needed to do to get back into the national reckoning: Score a lot of runs and keep well

Even before Dinesh Karthik got a chance to set a goal for the Ranji season this year Kris Srikkanth stepped in and did the job for him. The chairman of selectors told Karthik bluntly what the Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman needed to do to get back into the national reckoning: Score a lot of runs and keep well. “I knew what was expected right away,” Karthik said on Friday, minutes after he was named in the Indian squad for the New Zealand series. After disappointing in the first two Tests in Sri Lanka last year, Karthik was replaced by Parthiv Patel for the final match. Both were there because Mahendra Singh Dhoni had opted out but neither made an impression; nonetheless, they remained the front-runners for the second keeper’s slot.It was a close race but Karthik seems to have tipped the balance with the big runs he managed in the domestic game, even if the chinks in his glovework remained. He was No. 10 on the Ranji Trophy run-makers’ list and the highest scorer in the Duleep Trophy; he had five centuries in all – three in the Ranji, including a double, and two in three Duleep games for South Zone. It’s been quite a turnaround from the Sri Lanka debacle but Karthik, who at 23 has dealt with adversity before, wasn’t about to march off into the shadows. “I have been dropped before but it was tough when I returned from Sri Lanka. But you need to go through it and understand what you need to do to get back into the team.”He had lots of help. First, prompted by coach WV Raman, the Tamil Nadu selectors made him captain. “He has a restless mind and it would have rankled him after being dropped. And I wanted someone who would be constant through the season since [Subramaniam] Badrinath was going to be with the national squad,” Raman said.Karthik agrees. “To be part of the team as a player and to lead it are two different things. If I was just a player I wouldn’t have been part of a lot of decision-making and I probably wouldn’t have played as responsibly as I did as a captain. The captaincy meant that I had to lead a group of people who were looking to win the Ranji Trophy, and I had a coach who was backing me, and a set of selectors who believed in my thoughts. These things gave me the belief that if I did well on the domestic circuit my performance would be recognised and I might get another chance.”He worked hard on his batting with his personal coaches, focusing primarily on two aspects: strokeplay and defensive technique, and batted with far more application and purpose than before. And the results came. A fine example was his cavalier innings against Central Zone during the Duleep game when the other specialist batsmen had departed. At 86 for 6 Karthik felt the only thing he could do was go for broke. South ended up making a respectable 329.”The situation just happened and I couldn’t plan anything. I had to go out there and figure out how I could help the team. I went with the normal mindset of a No.7, but when wickets started falling I realised that if we had to win we had to up the run-rate, so I started to play my shots and it came out well.”It didn’t always come off. In the Ranji semi-finals against Uttar Pradesh he dropped catches at crucial junctures, which played a huge role in Tamil Nadu failing to make it to the final. Karthik accepts the blame squarely. “I was disappointed with my keeping in the semi-final but that can happen in a long season. But that is the thing with a wicketkeeper: I honestly had a good season till then and suddenly I dropped a few. After the dropped catches we were out of the Ranji Trophy, so people dependent on me were upset with me and I was upset with myself.”Raman has a word of caution. “There were will be a lot more deviation when he keeps to the likes of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma on the seaming pitches in New Zealand. So he needs to ensure he does not trust the ball to come straight as an arrow as it does on Indian tracks. He needs to stay focused till the ball comes into his hands.”But Karthik seems to have picked himself up already. “The one thing you learn by sitting out is the fire inside increases to get back into the Indian team. India are now competing with South Africa to be the number one and you want contribute. That is what I want to do.”
