What’s the latest?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has provided an update on the Brazilian after he was taken off in the first half against Leeds in the Premier League on Saturday.

The update came courtesy of Lee Ryer who relayed the following quotes in The Chronicle: “Joelinton has been suffering with a groin problem since I arrived.

“We’ve been managing him through the games. It’s a problem where he’s been going down in games related to that groin and today it’s come to that so that was a big disappointment with the form that he’s been in.”

Frustration

This update will frustrate Newcastle supporters for several reasons. Firstly, it confirms that this is a long-running issue that has not been solved.

Howe’s comments indicate that he was dealing with the problem under Steve Bruce and the former Magpies boss did not manage to fix it.

However, they also mean that Howe has been playing him in spite of his pain instead of attempting to resolve his injury, although it remains to be seen how difficult that will be.

If he is able to see out the remainder of the campaign before seeking a long-term fix in the summer then playing him in recent weeks would make sense, but fans will surely be left irritated by the decision to play him if he is now ruled out for a number of matches in the here and now.

The supporters will also be frustrated by this as Joelinton could be a major loss for the Magpies on the pitch. He has recorded SofaScore ratings of 7.0 or higher in each of his last three games, playing in central midfield, which shows that his performances have been impressive since switching his position.

Before coming off with his injury against Leeds, he won five duels, three tackles, one interception and completed 100% of his attempted dribbles whilst creating one chance – as per SofaScore.

This highlights the impact he can make at both ends of the pitch as a box-to-box midfielder and why fans won’t be pleased with his injury situation heading into a crucial period of matches.

Hopefully, for this reason, this is not a serious problem for the 6 foot 1 colossus and he will be able to manage through the pain to continue putting in excellent displays for the club in the Premier League.

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has revealed that Aston Villa are “confident” of making two more new signings in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Steven Gerrard’s side have already enjoyed a successful first few weeks of the transfer window thus far, signing the likes of Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho and watching both of them deliver the goods in recent games in the Premier League.

Now, Evans has indicated that Villa’s work in the transfer market is not done just yet.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Gerrard has identified defensive midfield as the priority and had Rodrigo Bentancur watched in person on Sunday night. #AVFC know the fee required to get him. Villa are confident of getting a DM in before the deadline + a back-up centre-half.”

Gerrard has come in and lifted spirits since the disappointing end to Dean Smith’s tenure at the club, and the two marquee additions of Coutinho and Digne have just galvanised things.

The controversy over the sale of the IPL Kochi franchise has claimed its first victim, with India’s junior foreign minister Shashi Tharoor resigning over allegations of a conflict of interest in his mentoring the consortium through the successful bid. Earlier in the day Sunanda Pushkar, Tharoor’s close friend whose 4.7% “free equity” stake in the franchise had become the source of the controversy, said she had offered to give up her holding.”It’s a voluntary resignation. I don’t want to embarrass the party. I want parliament proceedings to go on, hence I have decided to resign,” Tharoor said in his letter. A statement from the Prime Minister’s office said the resignation had been forwarded to the President “with a recommendation that it be accepted”.Pushkar’s offer to give up her share in the franchise – seen as an attempt to save Tharoor – was revealed in the evening, a few hours before Tharoor’s resignation. “Given the deeply unpleasant publicity surrounding my involvement, I can no longer find the enthusiasm required to associate myself with any IPL activity in the future,” Pushkar said in a statement. “I therefore voluntarily offer to return to Rendezous the sweat equity they offered me. I do not wish to ask for compensation for my services rendered to them.”The decision, Pushkar’s lawyer said, was made on Saturday. On Sunday, Tharoor, a member of the ruling Congress party, met with the Indian prime minister amid speculation over whether he would resign from his post as junior minister for foreign affairs because of the controversy about whether Pushkar was acting as a proxy for him, a charge Tharoor had denied. That equity is held by Kisan, Shailender and Pushpa Gaikwad, Sunanda Pushkar, Puja Gulathi, Jayant Kotalwar, Vishnu Prasad, Sundip Agarwal.

The Verdict: Encouraging…

Signing only Kulusevski and Bentancur would be a slight disappointment from Tottenham given the plethora of links to come out over the last week of the transfer window.

Antonio Conte had earmarked the signing of a new striker, left-sided centre-half and a right-wing-back to boost Spurs’ chances of a top four finish, but it remains to be seen whether he can get any of these positions filled after all.

Mark Cosgrove insists he is over the surprise and frustration at being sacked by South Australia and is ready for the next phase of his career in Tasmania. Cosgrove was shocked to be axed by the Redbacks after a season in which he was second only to Michael Klinger in their Sheffield Shield averages, with 511 runs at 42.58.While he searched for a new state, he had a UK passport to fall back on if the need arose to switch allegiances. The lifeline from Tasmania came in the second round of state contract offers and Cosgrove said he was hoping to emulate his former South Australia team-mate Ryan Harris in lifting after changing states and going on to play for Australia.”It was a surprise when I got told and it was frustrating to have to go through the process of finding a new home,” Cosgrove told Cricinfo this week. “Now I’m pretty excited. It will be a really good move for me and my girlfriend. I look at someone like Ryan Harris, I played a lot of cricket with Ryan, and the change has done him good. I’m only 25, so I have time.”Cosgrove has already played for Australia – three one-day internationals in Bangladesh and Malaysia in 2006 – but has struggled over the years to keep his weight down. South Australia’s officials often became frustrated with his fitness levels, and he was suspended at the start of 2005-06 for turning up unfit after a season in England and in February 2008 he was also dropped for being out of shape.He said Jamie Cox, the SACA high performance manager, had not elaborated on the reasons for him losing his contract last month. وأضاف ناجسلمان:”لا أعتقد أن كأس العالم في خطر، نحن نحاول القيام بذلك بعناية الآن، يعرف مانو جسده جيدًا ويعرف الألم الذي يمكنه اللعب به ومتى لا”.

وينطلق كأس العالم 2022 في 20 نوفمبر المقبل وحتى 18 ديسمبر، ويغيب نوير عن الملاعب منذ مباراة بوروسيا دورتموند في 8 أكتوبر الجاري والتي انتهت بالتعادل 2-2.
