Fosun made January Wolves mistake

Now that the 2022 January transfer window has come to a close, Wolves and manager Bruno Lage will now have the rest of the season to try and end their Premier League campaign as strongly as possible with the players they currently have in their squad.

In terms of what business the Midlands club managed to do throughout the month, they secured deals for Chiquinho, Hayao Kawabe and Sang-bin Jeong, with the latter two then leaving on individual loan deals.

On the other side, Wolves also managed to loan out some of their current players such as Adama Traore to Barcelona, Bruno Jordao to Grasshoppers and Leonardo Campana to Inter Miami.

With the window now closed and time for reflection has presented itself, it could be argued that Fosun made a critical error during January that will have infuriated Lage – not bringing in a new centre-back.

The Wolves manager made it clear early on in the window that he wanted a new central defender in his squad with Romain Saiss away on international duty and the duo of Willy Boly and Yerson Mosquera out injured.

Despite being linked with moves for the likes of Benoit Badiashile and Duje Caleta-Car throughout the month, there were no reinforcements to their backline at Molineux.

Thankfully for Wolves, their reliable duo of club captain Conor Coady and Max Kilman managed to get through the month unscathed, with recalled loanee Toti Gomes playing in their game against Southampton and Brentford in the second half of the month.

Moving forward, with Boly and Mosquera eventually going to return from injury and Saiss from international duty, this should help with Wolves’ strength and depth at the back instead of having to constantly rely on Coady and Kilman.

Although, with Fosun not securing a deal for a centre-back when the 45-year-old made it clear he needed one, this could be seen as the Wolves owner not being willing to back the manager and strengthen the team when needed.

Either way, the January window is closed now and the former Benfica boss will have to make do with what he has in his squad until the summer transfer window opens, where it will be intriguing to see if Wolves try and secure a new centre-half this time around.

However, until then, if the Old Gold start to concede more goals in the league that could cost them points and potentially a European place; something that would lead to their failings in the January window being described as a big blunder from Fosun.

Surrey chase first win after Middlesex collapse

Andrew Strauss missed out on a first hundred of the season as Middlesex lost ten wickets for 161 runs to surrender control of the match to Surrey at The Oval. Surrey, who chose not to enforce the follow on when their visitors were all out for 324, reached 165 for 2 at the close on day three, a lead of 331, and will now aim to bowl Middlesex out again on the final day as they seek a first victory of their County Championship Division Two campaign. After Laurie Evans fell early today, Arun Harinath and Mark Ramprakash took the attack to Middlesex in a partnership of 130. Harinath was bowled just before stumps for 63 while Ramprakash, who survives on 86 not out, took his aggregate run tally against his former county to 1367 from 15 first-class innings.Strauss, who had earlier resumed on 54 with Middlesex 148 without loss, was dropped at slip by Rory Hamilton-Brown on 57 as offspinner Gareth Batty found some turn out of the bowlers’ rough at the start of a skilful spell from the Vauxhall Road End. But the England captain then moved comfortably enough to 92 – despite seeing the early losses of opening partner Scott Newman and Owais Shah – and a century looked likely.Fast bowler Jade Dernbach, however, denied him the feat at the start of a spell which could yet prove decisive. Strauss tried to drive him on the up but hit the ball straight at short extra cover after facing 167 balls and striking a six and 13 fours. The Middlesex innings declined alarmingly once both Strauss and Newman had departed.Surrey, however, deserve credit for their bowling and fielding. Hamilton-Brown, their young captain, set a fine example with a brilliant catch to dismiss John Simpson in the over before lunch, diving full length to his left to pluck a drive out of the air at short extra cover.Middlesex were 163 without loss when Newman, on 91, edged a lifting ball from Chris Tremlett to the keeper. Even at 220 for 3, when Strauss was out, it looked like Middlesex could get close to Surrey’s first-innings total of 490. But Dernbach, working up a decent head of steam from the pavilion end after initial bursts from Tremlett and Andre Nel, who sent back Shah cheaply with a ball which bounced and left the batsman, then also claimed the scalps of Neil Dexter and Simpson in a burst of 3 for 11 in 21 balls.Dawid Malan departed soon after lunch, gloving a sweep at Batty which sent the ball gently looping up to the slip fielder who trotted around behind the wicketkeeper to take the catch. Batty, who bowled unchanged for 22 overs either side of lunch at a cost of only 75 runs, and did a fine containing job while the quicker bowlers rotated at the other end, fully deserved that success and also the final wicket of Steven Finn following second new-ball successes for Dernbach and Nel.Gareth Berg and Shaun Udal held up Surrey for a while in a seventh-wicket stand of 44, but Dernbach won lbw shouts against Udal and Pedro Collins – trapping Udal with a near-yorker – while Murtagh was caught behind without scoring off Nel. Berg remained 45 not out, with a six and four fours from 66 balls, but Middlesex’s slide left them with a fight on their hands to rescue a draw on the final day.

Aston Villa: Martinez struggles v Newcastle

Aston Villa suffered their first Premier League defeat in over a month as Steven Gerrard’s side lost 1-0 at Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Kieran Trippier’s 35th-minute free-kick was the difference between the two teams as Villa striker Ollie Watkins saw a goal ruled out for offside in the second half.

It was a below-par display from the visitors, with Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece tweeting that the visitors were “the worst they’ve been under Steven Gerrard”.

Despite the whole team struggling, Emi Martinez – who is usually excellent for the Villans – had a forgettable match.

According to SofaScore, the goalkeeper was the joint-lowest rated player on the pitch as the Argentine and team-mate Douglas Luiz were handed 6.4/10 ratings. The goalkeeper made just one save whilst also failing to record a single punch, runout or claim. Martinez could also only manage a 68% passing accuracy, whilst having just 28 touches – the second-fewest of any Villa starter.

Granted, Newcastle didn’t offer much either, with Eddie Howe’s side recording just two shots on target, one being the goal from Trippier. Also, in fairness to the Villa ‘keeper, there wasn’t much he could’ve done with the free-kick, which took a big deflection off Emi Buendia on its way into the net.

The performance was particularly below-par due to how high expectations now are for the 29-year-old. Since joining Aston Villa from Arsenal in September 2020, the goalkeeper has made 61 appearances, keeping 21 clean sheets in the process, an average of a clean sheet every 2.9 games.

He has missed just one league game for Gerrard’s side this term and is a crucial presence at the back, with his distribution a key factor in the way in how the 41-year-old wants his team to play.

However, one legitimate criticism of Villa’s squad is that there is very little pressure on the 29-year-old to maintain his place in between the sticks, with Jed Steer and Robin Olsen, who signed on loan from Roma in January, the only alternatives.

Olsen struggled to make a positive impact on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship earlier this season before switching to Villa Park, conceding 17 goals in 11 league appearances whilst keeping just one clean sheet.

As for Steer, the 29-year-old came into the team for the 3-0 defeat at Chelsea in September when Martinez was absent, whilst also appearing twice in the Carabao Cup and once in the FA Cup this term. It indicates his status as a reserve player that the bulk of his appearances have come in much-changed domestic cup XIs.

There probably won’t be any serious consequences as a result of Martinez’s below-par performance on Tyneside, but Gerrard will certainly be looking for a bit more consistency from his goalkeeper with his side targeting a top-half finish. That could be harder to achieve after this weak display from the Argentine, and indeed the team as a whole today.

Plays of the day from the 1st ODI between England and Australia at the Rose Bowl

Bowling change of the day
Luke Wright made a memorably succinct contribution to England’s World Twenty20 victory over Australia – his solitary over of the tournament produced the wicket of Cameron White and stifled the run-rate with five singles. Today, however, he didn’t have to wait nearly so long to get involved, as Andrew Strauss called him into action in the 14th over, midway through the bowling Powerplay. With visible self-belief, he bounded to the crease with the vigour of a Labrador puppy, removed Tim Paine with his second delivery, then had Ricky Ponting caught at fine leg for initial figures of 3-1-7-2.Anchor of the day
For all his indubitable class, Michael Clarke has never quite convinced as a limited-overs batsman, and as captain in the Caribbean recently, he singled himself out as a scapegoat after coming in at No. 3 in the final and plodding his way to a run-a-ball 27. So, what is there to say about his latest effort – 87 not out from 97 balls? On the one hand, it met the needs of his team entirely, as he stabilised the innings from a dicey 98 for 4, and enabled Australia to bat out the remaining 28 overs of their innings. On the other hand, it lacked a critical final measure of oomph, as 12 singles and a two from his final 13 balls would testify. With better support, it might not have mattered, but in a new-look side, the onus was on Clarke to be anchor and impetus.Innings of the day
It was left to England’s Irishman to demonstrate how to recover a one-day innings, from a near-identical scoreline of 97 for 4. Eoin Morgan waited 19 balls today for his first boundary, a bout of circumspection that compared to his 27-ball wait during his Test debut against Bangladesh last month. But whereas on that occasion, he gave his start away with a loose dab on 44, this time he ground urgently through the gears to leave the Aussies needing (and lacking) inspiration to dislodge him. He broke the run-chase with 10 fours in the space of his next 34 balls, the most audacious of which was a flippant uppercut for a one-bounce four over third man. The remainder of the innings was a cruise, but he still sealed it in style with an 85-ball hundred.Let-off of the day
Kevin Pietersen is playing his last “home” international at the Rose Bowl, after the announcement that he will be leaving Hampshire at the end of the summer. In five-and-a-half seasons, he has managed seven Championship matches, 17 List-As and two Twenty20 appearances, so this hardly amounted to a teary-eyed farewell, but it ought to have been more anticlimactic than his eventual 29 from 36. While still on 0, and facing up to Ryan Harris, he played loosely away from his body for Paine to claim what sounded like a faint snick. The umpire was unmoved, but later Snickometer replays suggested KP was a bit lucky.Debut of the day
Last month, the 21-year-old Steven Finn announced himself as the next big thing in England’s bowling ranks, as his 6’7″ frame routed Bangladesh in consecutive Tests at Lord’s and Old Trafford. Though he’s now being hidden during this five-match Ashes appetizer, the Aussies have had no such qualms about blooding their own lanky rookie, with the 19-year-old Josh Hazlewood becoming the youngest ODI debutant in their history. At 6’5″, he is a fraction shorter than Finn, but on initial inspection, he’s no less a prospect. He started nervously as Pietersen crunched his first ball for four, and eventually conceded 41 in seven overs. But his cross-seam cutter to bowl Craig Kieswetter was a peach, and it was notable that Ponting trusted him with a slip in a hunt for mid-innings wickets. On this occasion, the ploy failed, but many fine careers have been launched in defeat.Superfluous expenditure of the day
On the day that George Osborne announced stringent cuts in the government’s emergency budget, the Rose Bowl authorities were on hand to demonstrate that not everyone’s purse-strings require the same amount of tightening. The summer solstice has only just passed, and with the sun eventually setting at 9.23pm this was in fact the third-longest day of the year, not to mention one of the hottest. There wasn’t a whole lot of need for the floodlights that blazed away from the end of Australia’s innings, and didn’t really play any significant role until the final 15 overs of England’s run-chase. Still, they looked impressive, as indeed did the rest of the ground. Nine years after its inauguration, Hampshire’s international venue is finally coming into its own.

Sehwag's wicket is the key – Herath

Rangana Herath, who hit a career best 80 not out in Sri Lanka’s first-innings score of 520-8 declared, was confident of proving effective on a fourth day pitch

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who hit a career-best 80 not out in Sri Lanka’s first-innings score of 520-8 declared, was confident of proving effective on a fourth day pitch and said Virender Sehwag’s wicket was the key for the hosts to consolidate their strong position. The Sri Lankan bowlers had nipped out three Indian wickets, including Sachin Tendulkar, before stumps on the third day. “We are on top now and if we can get two or three early wickets and bowl them out for under 300 we are in the game. That’s our target,” Herath said.”There is turn and bounce on the pitch and I am confident I can do something on it. Sehwag is the danger man and we need to get him out early.”Sehwag raced to 85 off 98 balls and looked, by far, the most comfortable among the Indian batsmen. In his previous Test appearance in Galle, in 2008, he struck a match-winning double-century to help India level the series.Muttiah Muralitharan, who is playing his final Test, needs seven more wickets to reach 800. Herath, however, said the most important objective for the team was to win the Test. “I am trying my best to get wickets to help my team win the Test,” he said. “I am fortunate that in my career I had the honour of bowling in tandem with Murali. It is easy to bowl with him at the other end. It will be difficult to fill the void left by Murali but Ajantha Mendis, Suraj Randiv and I are trying our best to win matches for our team and country,” he said.Herath said he had been working on his batting with his coaches and the experience he gained playing county cricket for Hampshire had also helped him make his highest first-class and Test score.
