West Ham: Perkins could be the next Rice

Despite West Ham United’s desperate need for a second option up front, with Michail Antonio having been David Moyes’ only recognised centre-forward since the sale of Sebastien Haller 13 months ago, the Hammers once again failed to seal the signing of a new forward in the January transfer window.

On the face of it, this was not through the lack of trying, with the Irons reportedly submitting a club-record bid totalling £60m for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, as well as seeing an 11th-hour move for Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata fall through – although the 58-year-old’s decision to leave the vast majority of his business until the final day of the window quite rightly raised questions.

However, with the transfer market now well and truly closed, West Ham will have to continue their fight to secure a top-four finish in the league, in addition to competing in the Europa League and FA Cup, with Antonio being their only senior option to lead the line.

Having said that, perhaps Moyes already possesses something of an answer to his lack of attacking options in the form of the highly-rated West Ham U23 centre-forward, Sonny Perkins.

“The next Declan Rice”

Indeed, it would appear as if there are extremely high hopes for the 18-year-old hitman amongst those in the know at the club, with ExWHUemployee stating of the England U18 international: “One player to pay attention to is a West Ham youngster called Sonny Perkins.

“This is someone I’ve spoken about on the podcast before as a talent, and he’s really beginning to stand out now at academy level, really getting rave reviews. Obviously, he’s performing on the international stage as well for his age, and he is one to keep an eye on.

“From what I’ve heard in the academy circles, he could be the next Declan Rice. So just keep your eye out for his progression within the next few years.”

It is not difficult to see why expectations of the teenager are so high, as, over his 17 appearances in the U18 Premier League and Premier League 2 this season, the £720k-rated striker has bagged 10 goals and provided his teammates with one assist – directly contributing to a goal every 123 minutes of football played.

This form has already seen the 18-year-old be called up by David Moyes on three separate occasions this season, twice in the Europa League – forcing a brilliant save from Paul Gartler shortly after his introduction in the 2-0 win over Rapid Vienna – as well as once in the Premier League.

As such, with Moyes already appearing to be well aware of the potential Perkins possesses, it would appear highly advisable for the 58-year-old to fully unleash the youngster over the remainder of the current campaign, as, with a bit of patience, the striker could well go onto become the club’s next £75m-rated talent in the footsteps of Rice.

Leeds: Costa set for return to Elland Road

Leeds United loanee Helder Costa is set to return to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Marca (via Sport Witness), who claim that Valencia look extremely unlikely to activate the winger’s €20m (£16.5m) option to buy clause written into his temporary contract with the LaLiga side.

The report goes on to state that, despite the Leeds forward having started to impress after a slow start to life in Spain, Bryan Gil’s January arrival has pushed the 28-year-old down Jose Bordalas’ pecking order at the Mestalla – something which Marca claim means the Angola international’s return to the Premier League side is all but certain at the end of the current campaign.

Orta must axe Costa

Considering just how poor Costa was for Leeds last season, in addition to the winger failing to make any mark during his opportunity to impress away from Elland Road, it is abundantly clear that the £16m signing is a player who Victor Orta simply must move onto pastures new this summer.

Indeed, over his 22 Premier League appearances last term, the £7.2m-rated forward scored three goals, registered three assists and missed three big chances, as well as taking an average of just 0.7 shots and making a mere 0.4 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £70k-per-week attacker who Noel Whelan dubbed a “massive flop” and a “negative” player average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.46, ranking him as the Whites’ second-worst player in the top flight of English football.

Things have not exactly improved for Costa over his 20 LaLiga outings for Valencia this season, with the Angolan scoring no goals, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, with these metrics seeing the 28-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of just 6.50 – ranking him as Los Murcielagos’ joint fourth-worst player in the division.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the winger who Whelan also labelled a “real disappointment” is simply not cut out for top-flight football, something that is more than enough reason for Orta to axe Costa this summer.

Indian middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh will miss Monday’s tri-series ODI against Sri Lanka after being diagnosed with dengue fever in Dambulla. The development is a setback for Yuvraj, who has been battling poor form and fitness issues in recent months and was making a comeback to the limited-overs side after being dropped for the Asia Cup.”Yuvraj Singh is not available for this game,” MS Dhoni, India’s captain, said on the eve of the game. “He has dengue. But he is out of danger.” Yuvraj has had a disappointing tour of Sri Lanka, where he played only in the first Test. He caught the flu ahead of the second and was kept out of the third by Suresh Raina, who had scored a century on debut.India’s fitness concerns, however, did not end with Yuvraj and new-ball bowler Ashish Nehra is also a doubtful starter against Sri Lanka, while Ishant Sharma is also uncertain to play. “We are monitoring Ashish Nehra,” Dhoni said. “He has got a bit of problem with his gluteus. So we will take the exact decision before the game. Ishant is shaping well. As of now these are the two players who may be missing out. And hopefully by tomorrow there won’t be any addition to the list.”Dhoni said Dinesh Karthik, who had got struck on the hand while batting on an underprepared practice pitch, was fit and likely to play. The sidelining of Yuvraj and Nehra’s possible unavailability are major setbacks to the team, which is already missing first-choice players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Gautam Gambhir.India conceded a bonus point during their 200-run defeat in the opening game of the tri-series and are presently bottom of the table.

Journalist criticises Alex Mowatt display

Journalist Steve Madeley has laid into West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt’s ineffective performance in his side’s 4-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest.

The Lowdown: Baggies humbled at Forest

Steve Bruce’s side made the trip to the City Ground on Monday evening, looking to pick up a rare positive result in an increasingly disappointing season.

The Baggies were thumped by their promotion-chasing opponents, however, trailing 3-0 at half-time, not helped by Darnell Furlong’s red card.

Forest added a fourth goal after the break, with the defeat leaving Bruce’s languishing 12th in the Championship table and effectively ending their playoff chances.

The Latest: Madeley critical of Mowatt

Mowatt had a bad evening, with Sofascore noting that his total of 23 touches was comfortably fewer than goalkeeper David Button managed (43), and Madeley took to Twitter to criticise his efforts:

“Molumby on for Mowatt, who has had a poor night.”

The Verdict: Can this season end?

After such confidence at the start of the season, when Valerien Ismael arriving as manager and automatic promotion expected by many, this has turned into a dismal campaign.

Mowatt perhaps sums it all up, also coming in with big expectations but not matching the hype, providing just six direct goal involvements and often frustrating fans.

For West Brom to be 12th in the league with the squad they have is simply not good enough and there must be question marks over Bruce’s future moving forward.

The right decisions need to be made in the summer, in terms of the manager and playing personnel, ensuring the Baggies produce a far stronger campaign next time around.

In other news, West Brom have been backed to sign a Premier League midfielder. Read more here.

Fantastic Finch stars in Victoria victory

Aaron Finch played scored a nerveless 93 off 60 balls as pre-tournament favourites Victoria overcame a spirited effort by Central Districts, to chase 166 with two balls to spare

The Bulletin by Nitin Sundar15-Sep-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe pressure of a tight chase hardly showed on Aaron Finch•Associated Press

Aaron Finch scored a nerveless 93 off 60 balls as pre-tournament favourites Victoria overcame a spirited effort by Central Districts, to chase 166 with two balls to spare. Central Districts punched above their weight for a large part of the match, with their captain Jamie How scoring an equally memorable 77, but their bowlers wilted against Finch’s assault, which was aggressive and measured in equal parts.Central Districts had finished their innings on a high, How turning around a lacklustre beginning with a flurry of boundaries at the end. The pressure was on Victoria, desperate to live up to their pre-tournament billing. Their reply ran into rough weather early, Rob Quiney and Matthew Wade perishing before they could get off the blocks, raising visions of the failed chase against Warriors in their tournament opener. Finch, however, was reading from a different script. While David Hussey struggled to connect with the big hits, Finch kept Victoria ticking with some aggressive running and the odd four. Without taking risks, he stole four of the five boundaries that came in the six overs following Wade’s dismissal. A punch off George Worker through extra-cover in the 12th was followed by a mow off Kieran Noema-Barnett through midwicket to bring up his fifty in the 13th over, off 40 balls. Hussey’s fall in the next over once again gave Central Districts the upper hand, but Finch carried on as if nothing had happened.Fifty-seven were required off the last five, not your regular walk in the park, but Finch wore an air of calmness that belied the pressure of the situation. Worker was heaved over square-leg in the 16th over; Michael Mason was top-edged to fine-leg in the 17th. Andrew McDonald joined in the fun, cross-batting Mason over long off to reduce the equation to 36 off 18.Central Districts’ limitations were exposed towards the end, as Seth Rance struggled to land his yorkers. Finch tucked in with two boundaries towards fine-leg, before carting Mason inside-out for six more. Brad Patton dropped McDonald off the last ball of the 19th, more importantly conceding two runs and leaving Victoria needing 12 off the last over. The force was clearly with Victoria, and Finch sealed the deal, edging Doug Bracewell through third man before launching him out of the park to end the game.If Finch’s innings was an exercise in maintaining the momentum and staying in touch from start to finish, How’s knock showcased how to get used to the pace before exploding. Victoria had begun well, Peter Siddle striking twice in his opening over, coming back after seven-and-a-half months. Mathew Sinclair and Worker fell by the wayside after getting off to starts, leaving the innings rudderless at 83 for 4 in the 14th over.Luckily for them, How had managed to see off the attritional period and was primed for a late assault. He top-edged Siddle over third-man in the 15th over and followed it up next ball with a gorgeous pull into the midwicket stands. Bryce McGain was smashed down the ground for six more, and Dirk Nannes paddled to fine-leg as How warmed up for the final flourish.Brendon Diamanti set the tone, lofting the first ball of the 18th over over the long-off boundary before turning the strike to his captain. What followed was an exhibition of immaculate stroke-making as How picked his spots with precision. He drove the next two balls down the ground, and followed it up with a paddle-sweep and a tickle to third-man, all for fours. The last of those was above waist height and had to be rebowled. How cashed in, drilling the length offering over Hastings’ head as 28 came off the over.At that point it seemed Central Districts had done enough for their first win in the tournament. Finch, however did not flinch; even in the 17th over of the chase, when he was beaten outside the off stump, with the asking rate mounting out of control, he kept his cool. No wild, desperate swishes of the bat either – he simply popped a bubble in the gum he was chewing, and carried on. On this day, he could do no wrong. And he knew it.
