Aston Villa could be ready to plot a move for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Football Insider sources who claim that Steven Gerrard is stepping up to sign a new centre back in the summer transfer window. Gerrard watched Caleta-Car last week as Marseille beat Nantes 3-2 in Ligue 1.

With the Croatia international’s contract expiring at the end of next season and his market value set at £14.4m, then Villa may well grab themselves a bargain if they were to land the defender.

They may face a battle though, as fellow Premier League side West Ham have been linked with him in the past few months.

Better than Mings & Konsa?

Villa have conceded 27 goals in 21 matches under Gerrard since his arrival in November 2021 and these figures are simply not good enough if he aims to take the side into Europe.

The centre-back partnership of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa is clearly not working well enough, hence the interest in Caleta-Car.

Dubbed “excellent” by Alex Crook, it’s clear to see why. The 25-year-old has 22 caps for Croatia, featuring in the squad that was runners-up at the 2018 World Cup and also played in Euro 2020.

Caleta-Car has a 92% pass success rate in Ligue 1, higher than both Mings and Konsa. Showing that he can play out successfully from the heart of defence and build attacks.

He also wins 69% of his duels per game in Ligue 1, again higher than both Englishmen and these performance-related factors could be what Gerrard is looking for in a central defender; someone that is strong and can win both ground and aerial battles, as well as being able to play out well.

Villa may find themselves with a bargain on their hands come the summer.

The pair’s role will be crucial in trying to save the match on Saturday, as West Indies will fancy their chances of running through Pakistan’s lower-order after they took the visitors’ last seven wickets for 60 runs in the first innings.

The Latest: Conte maps out exciting plan…

According to reports out of Spain, Conte personally has a ‘plan drawn up’ to put together a ‘competitive starting eleven’ capable of challenging for silverware next year.

The plan, as per this update, includes the ‘important signings’ of Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid), Denzel Dumfries (Inter Milan) and Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan).

Indeed, it appears Conte is now eyeing a major triple signing for Spurs this summer.

The Verdict: Down to Levy…

While the 52-year-old apparently knows exactly what he wants, it’ll come down to chairman Daniel Levy to back him with sufficient funds and transfer chief Fabio Paratici to successfully navigate negotiations.

Conte’s ambition to transform Spurs back into an elite Premier League side is no secret, and as he’s hinted, the Italian could leave if his goal isn’t shared by club hierarchy.

While it is certainly a tough ask for the Lilywhites to seal all three of Gimenez, Dumfries and Skriniar, arguably too tough, the club could display their intent by making audacious attempts at the very least, perhaps locking up Dumfries just and one of the centre-backs.

وتابع: “يمتلك منتخب المغرب الكثير من اللاعبين الرائعين، الذين يمتلكون قوة بدنية كبيرة كذلك هناك أسلوب جماعي يميزهم على مستوى الخط الهجومي مما يجعلهم قادرين على تهديد مرمى الخصم في أي وقت”.

The BCCI has lost its appeal against the stay issued on its terimination of the King’s XI franchise with the Mumbai High Court terming the board’s action as “erroneous”

The BCCI has suffered its second legal setback in consecutive days with a division bench of the Bombay High Court dismissing its appeal against the court’s order staying the termination of Kings XI Punjab. The order, which comes a day after a similar High Court decision favouring Rajasthan Royals, allows Punjab to continue being part of the tournament and to participate in next month’s player auction.In its ruling, the bench – comprising Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Anoop Mohata – said the entire basis of the letter of termination issued by the BCCI to the Mohali franchise was “erroneous and flawed”.”It is abundantly clear that BCCI wanted to terminate the contract on the basis of what was factually incorrect,” it observed. “Termination was anything but fair and was wholly arbitrary.”The order was welcomed by Kings XI Punjab. “We have been on the right side since 2008,” co-owner Ness Wadia, said. “We have declared everything.” Another co-owner, the Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, called it a vindication of the franchise’s stand. “I feel happy. It’s good that things worked in our favour.”The BCCI had appealed against the interim stay issued by the High Court on December 8, which allowed the team back into the IPL subject to certain conditions, including retaining its shareholding pattern, fulfilling pending player payments and paying the BCCI guarantee money in case the final judgement goes against them.Justice S Vajifdar, who had issued the interim stay, said at the time that “prima facie” Punjab had a strong case against the expulsion and the “interim injunction” was only just. As part of his conditions for the stay, he also said that the four main owners – Wadia, Zinta, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul – needed to hold no less than 51% of the shares in KPH Dream Cricket Pvt. Ltd – the rights-holding company of the franchise – until the final judgement.Punjab will also have to clear its pending payments to its players, an amount running up to Rs.35 crore ($7.77 million), guarantee an amount of $18 million over the next two years (at the rate of $9 million per year) to protect player payments in case the franchise participates in the league, and $3.5 million to the BCCI as security towards any damage incurred by the board in case the final verdict goes against Punjab.The verdict comes a day after the High Court upheld the arbitrator’s stay on Rajasthan’s expulsion from the IPL, with the judge stating clearly that the facts were in the franchise’s favour. The decisions continue the trend of setbacks suffered by the BCCI in the courts as they attempt to block the two teams from being part of the 2011 tournament. The board still has the option of appealing the verdict to the Supreme Court.In October the BCCI had terminated Punjab and Rajasthan, holding the franchises guilty for violating the franchise agreement on three counts, including changes of ownership that went unreported to the board.

Davy Jacobs is looking forward to opening the batting for Mumbai Indians with Sachin Tendulkar, while Johan Botha admits being surprised at his high price

Just over three-quarters of a million dollars wound up separating Warriors team-mates Johan Botha and Davy Jacobs after the first day of the 2011 IPL player auction. Botha was snapped up for the massive amount of US$950,000 by the Rajasthan Royals, while Jacobs was a bargain for the Mumbai Indians at $190,000.The difference in money doesn’t bother Jacobs at all. “My base price was $20, 000 so I took a massive leap. To be honest, I would have gone for free,” he told ESPNCricinfo. Jacobs made a name for himself in the Champions League Twenty20 last year, where he scored 286 runs in six matches at an average of 47.66, and led the Warriors to the final. “I got the opportunity to play in the IPL because of my performance in the Champions League, I wouldn’t have got anywhere without it.”Jacobs hoped his CLT20 performances would help him earn a national call up, but he has so far been ignored. Now, he thinks if he performs well in the IPL, it might earn him a chance to wear the green and gold. “I want to play for South Africa, but I know I couldn’t have played better than I did in the CLT20. I am going to put the Warriors and the Mumbai Indians first and hope I can get there. There’s no point planning it anymore.”As an opening batsman, there is the real possibility that Jacobs will get to partner Sachin Tendulkar. “I’ve had people tweeting me saying I may be opening the batting with Sachin Tendulkar. I’ve never met him but it will be awesome. The whole world looks at this guy. When I was a boy, he was playing Test cricket and he is still going.” Jacobs did not keep in the CLT20 because Mark Boucher was in the side, but he is an able wicketkeeper and would do the job if called on.”I’ll bat anywhere or do anything. I just want to make the most of my chance.”He is known for his lively personality on the South African domestic circuit, and said he will try to bring some of that to Mumbai. “I just want to add what I can add. I will bring the same passion and desire that I have at the Warriors.”Botha received his news in a more measured fashion. He admitted to being surprised about his high price tag. “It’s a massive surprise and these types of things are life-changing but with that comes responsibility.” He has had a season in the IPL before, also at the Royals and he is pleased to be back at the same franchise. “I enjoyed my time with them before. I got along well with Warnie [Shane Warne] and the coaching staff. It’s a nice to go back to a team where you were before.”The South African T20 captain is concentrating on the current one-day international series against India and the World Cup before turning his attention to the IPL. “There is a lot of cricket before IPL4. I’m sure once we get there we will give 100% for our teams.”
