The Sindh High Court has stayed the PCB disciplinary committee’s proceedings against former captain Shahid Afridi, and asked the board and the Pakistan sports ministry to appear before it on June 9. The court’s decision comes after Afridi had filed a petition challenging the validity of the sanctions imposed on him by the PCB.”We filed a petition at the Sindh High Court against the PCB’s disciplinary committee and the punishments,” Syed Ali Zafar, Afridi’s lawyer, told ESPNcricinfo. “The court has suspended the committee [hearing] and PCB is bound to abide by the High Court. They have been asked to appear before the High Court the day after tomorrow and the punishments stand null and void as of now.”This does not mean, however, that Afridi can play yet for Hampshire, increasingly the main objective of his actions. The Pakistan board will appear at the hearing on Thursday. “We have been informed that an order has been passed and even if a certified copy of it isn’t received in time, we will not hold the disciplinary hearing and respect the order,” Taffazul Rizvi, the board’s legal advisor, told ESPNcricinfo. “I will be there on June 9 assisting the high court to reach a just a legal decision on the matter.”Afridi’s legal team had, until today, refused to be drawn on whether their client would appear at the PCB’s hearing tomorrow, or whether they would seek justice in the court of law. Yesterday, the PCB allowed Afridi to have legal representation inside the disciplinary hearing, one of his demands, but it has not stopped him from going to the courts.Legal observers say this step may work against Afridi himself, for there is a chance that proceedings drag on for some time. It is also expected that the court will concentrate on whether or not the PCB followed its own process correctly in issuing a showcause notice to Afridi and suspending his central contract and revoking his NOCs, rather than taking on the role of a disciplinary committee itself.This is now the second time in recent years that a high-profile player has taken the PCB to court to challenge a disciplinary punishment; in 2008 Shoaib Akhtar challenged a five-year ban handed out to him by the board under then chairman Nasim Ashraf. He eventually returned to the side, retiring earlier this year.This dispute has swiftly risen to overtake even that one, which also required political intervention ultimately. Afridi has been in touch with and gathered support from various political figures and was given a strong show of public support when he landed at Karachi airport this weekend. The board has stuck to its stance so far, insisting the issue remain an internal, disciplinary matter.The dispute between Afridi and the national board began when Afridi publicly revealed his disagreements with coach Waqar Younis after the tour of the West Indies. A three-member disciplinary committee had been set to hold hearings on the dispute at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on June 8 before the court passed it’s order.Afridi had announced his retirement from international cricket after being replaced by Misbah-ul-Haq as one-day captain, while simultaneously attacking unnamed members of the board. The PCB responded by suspending his central contract and withdrawing his no-objection certificate to play county cricket for Hampshire, as well as putting together a showcause notice detailing several breaches of the code of conduct.

Lancashire have won their Court of Appeal battle over the redevelopment of Old Trafford and can finally press ahead with the rebuilding work to secure their Test match future after what had been termed a ‘day of destiny’.The county have been involved in long-running legal battles with Derwent Holdings, a rival development company, over their plans for Old Trafford which involve working with the Tesco supermarket chain to build a superstore close to the ground.Derwent, who owned the White City retail park near Old Trafford, felt they had a suitable claim to build their own superstore but the case was repeatedly thrown out by various courts until it was taken to the Court of Appeal. The three judges hearing the case took evidence from both sides on Monday before quickly deciding in Lancashire’s favour, and Derwent haven’t been granted leave to appeal again.”This is one of the biggest days in the club’s history,” Lancashire chief Jim Cumbes said. “If we don’t redevelop then 150-odd years of history would have been in danger of disappearing.”With redevelopment, I am confident that Old Trafford can continue as an international cricket ground. Today’s decision means that the work can start and we can get the spades out.”The delays caused by the ongoing court cases meant that crucial funding couldn’t be released to pay for the development. However, the club had already started on significant building work in recent months because they couldn’t afford to wait any longer to hit deadlines set by the ECB if they were to be able to bid for a 2013 Ashes Test.Tesco are backing Lancashire’s plans and building a store in nearby White City while contributing £21million to the cost. Their joint planning application was approved in March last year, and at the same planning meeting Derwent had a scheme to build a Sainsbury’s at the site refused. Derwent argued that Trafford Council applied double standards in refusing its plans.The first part of the redevelopment was completed last year with the opening of The Point, a large red complex to the side of the pavilion, and continued over the winter with the turning of the square 90 degrees to prevent problems caused by the setting sun in autumn while new floodlights have also been installed.

The company behind Hot Spot will undertake tests to see whether the cameras can be tricked by the use of artificial substances on the edge of the bat. There is a belief among players that Vaseline can reduce the chances of a thin nick showing up, although it has only ever been rumoured that such tactics are used.Concerns about the effectiveness of Hot Spot came to the fore when VVS Laxman survived a caught-behind appeal on the second day at Trent Bridge. England were convinced there was an edge but Laxman was equally convinced he hadn’t hit it. The third umpire said there was a noise but it wasn’t clear from where. Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, sparked controversy by tweeting the suggestion of Vaseline and Stuart Broad was later asked and admitted checking the edge of Laxman’s bat but finding nothing.Warren Brennan, the owner of Hot Spot, has previously said the device’s accuracy is around 90-95% and can be impacted by such things as bright sunshine and the speed of the bat in the shot. He now says that it is possible that a substance like Vaseline could reduce the technology’s effectiveness and tests will be conducted to try to find conclusive results.”I would imagine that Vaseline would restrict the friction of the ball hitting the bat so if you reduce the friction you are going to reduce the Hot Spot,” Brennan told ESPNcricinfo. “That is pure and simple physics. From what I can remember, quite often the outside of the bat has a layer of some sort of coating.”Now if you put extra layers on the bat that might do the same thing. As long as it is a harder type of surface then you will get the Hot Spot. But if it is a soft, absorbant type of material then that will probably reduce the friction. It might take us a week or even longer to test all possibilities.”The other theory is that bat stickers on the edge of a blade can also help reduce the chances of a Hot Spot showing up – by showing one, long heat signature down the side of the bat – but Brennan said it is likely to work the opposite way and actually increase the visibility of individual marks.”What I noticed last week when I was at Lord’s was these stickers down the side of certain players’ bats,” he said. “When I looked at it through the cameras it actually looked like a Hot Spot, four or five little white spots. That was quite unusual so it must have be some sort of logo or the sticker. Through the infra-red I could see those spots.”I just don’t know why a manufacturer would put it on the side of the bat that would make it look like a Hot Spot. I had this conversation with the ICC less than a month ago and told them that we are noticing some of these stickers tend to reflect heat a bit like a mirror. The ICC said if that is the case they might have to look changing the regulations so that the side of the bat does not have any advertising, no stickers and no logos. But that is still a work in progress.”There have been a number of occasions when Hot Spot has proved inconclusive in caught-behind decisions. During the Ashes Kevin Pietersen survived at Melbourne, which incensed Ricky Ponting, while at Sydney Ian Bell survived an appeal which Snicko – which isn’t used with the DRS – later suggested was out.Hot Spot has been made a mandatory piece of technology for the DRS system following the ICC’s meetings in Hong Kong last month, where it was also decided to make Hawk-Eye optional. The infra-red cameras have shown themselves to be especially effective at proving bat-pad catches and whether a batsman has been hit pad first in an lbw appeal, although in this series DRS is not being used for any leg-before decisions.

It came down to nine needed off the final two balls, but Glamorgan were assured a draw when Graham Wagg bowled Hall with the penultimate delivery and the visitors finished on 140 for 6.It was a setback to Northamptonshire’s promotion push, but it ended Glamorgan’s run of three straight defeats. Northamptonshire took 10 points from the game to Glamorgan’s six. Glamorgan fought back well on the final day after resuming on 181 for 3, still needing 119 to avoid an innings defeat.Leading the home side’s rearguard action was Stewart Walters, who followed up his 81 not out in the first innings with a maiden century for his new club. Walters set the tone, sharing in a fourth wicket partnership with Mike Powell (55) worth 105 in 36 overs.But Walters lost Powell, who reached his 50 from 150 balls before being bowled by David Lucas via an inside edge, and then Jim Allenby, who was bowled by Hall offering no shot.
