Durham win keeps title hopes alive

Durham’s County Championship title ambitions have been kept alive by a208-run victory against Sussex at Hove

Scorecard
Durham’s County Championship title ambitions have been kept alive by a208-run victory against Sussex at Hove. In their penultimate game of the campaign, Durham bowled Sussex out for 312 in their second innings by 2.16pm on the final day to go top of Division One with 211 points.Durham do not play in next week’s round of matches, in which close rivalsLancashire and Warwickshire – each with a game in hand – take on Hampshire andNottinghamshire respectively, but they then have a home game againstWorcestershire in the final week of the Championship.Matt Prior stroked a brilliant 77 for Sussex but Ian Blackwell struck a vitalblow for Durham by having him leg-before in a five-wicket haul, and GrahamOnions hurried Durham to their seventh win of the season with a burst down theHove slope immediately after lunch which brought him the wickets of WayneParnell and Amjad Khan in quick succession.Onions took three for 49 overall, and slow left-armer Blackwell added threemore victims to his two overnight wickets to finish with well-deserved figuresof 5 for 102.Defeat for Sussex drags them further into the relegation picture. Left-hander Parnell edged a fine ball angled across him by Onions to keeper Phil Mustard, who then also took the catch when Khan touched a legside delivery.Parnell had hit a bright and breezy 49-ball 44, in an eighth-wicket stand of 65with Ben Brown, holding Durham up after they had earlier worked hard to splitSussex’s sixth wicket pair of Prior and Mike Yardy.Sussex had resumed on 119 for four and nightwatchman Jimmy Anyon was dismissedin the sixth over of the morning, well held at short leg by Mark Stoneman offMitch Claydon. But Prior and Yardy, both looking to play their shots, saw off Claydon andOnions before also taking the attack to Durham’s spinners, Blackwell and ScottBorthwick.Leg spinner Borthwick received some particularly heavy punishment, Prior twicedriving him past mid on for fours and also hitting him beautifully through extracover, while Yardy swept him powerfully as they took their partnership to 71.Blackwell, however, finally got the breakthrough after being switched to theCromwell Road end and winning an lbw shout against Prior when the England Testwicketkeeper tried to flick a ball away to fine leg and missed. Prior’s 77 hadtaken him only 88 balls and included 15 fours.Yardy was the next to go for 34, superbly held at silly mid off by Will Smithfrom bat and pad as he pushed forward to Blackwell, but the Brown-Parnellalliance took Sussex through to lunch at 274 for 7. Parnell, who had edged Onions between keeper and first slip for his sixth four earlier in the over, then fell with the total at 287 and the end came soon after last man Monty Panesar, to the delight of a decent Hove crowd, had swept and clubbed Blackwell for three leg-side sixes.Blackwell had the last laugh, though, when Panesar aimed another violent blowand was bowled for 18. Durham took 23 points from the game, and Sussex four.

Kerala pip Hyderabad in last-ball finish

A round-up of the first match-day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Oct-2011Kerala pulled off a last-ball victory over Hyderabad with three wickets to spare at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on the opening day of the 2011-12 Syed Mushtaq Trophy. Hyderabad chose to bat and were in trouble straight away, losing their top three batsmen with only nine runs on the board. A 52-ball 50 from Syed Quadri provided stability before some lusty late hitting from Ashish Reddy, who made 27 from 12 balls, pushed them to 119 for 7. Raiphi Gomez was run out in the first over of Kerala’s chase but captain VA Jagadeesh (49) and Robert Fernandez (25) steadied any nerves by adding 66. Kerala wobbled towards the end though, losing four wickets for 25 runs, but P Prasanth did just enough to take them over the line at the end.Openers S Anirudha and M Vijay set-up Tamil Nadu’s 84-run thrashing of Andhra Pradesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The pair bludgeoned their way to 96 from 10.4 overs, with Anirudha making 50 from 34 balls, a knock that included four fours and three sixes, while Vijay made 60 from 38 balls, striking five fours and three sixes. Dinesh Karthik then provided the finishing kick to the innings, slamming 42 from 24 balls to take Tamil Nadu to 172 for 7. Andhra were never in the game, slipping to 24 for 4 in the sixth over. Chandrasekar Ganapathy took 3 for 16, as Andhra were restricted to 88 for 9.A dazzling allround display from Stuart Binny helped Karnataka overwhelm Goa by 40 runs at the TI Cycles Ground in Chennai. Binny smashed 49 from 25 balls to boost Karnataka to 170 for 8 and then picked up for 4 for 14, including three of Goa’s top four batsmen, to ensure his side got off to a winning start in the competition. Manish Pandey also made 49, and along with Ganesh Satish (38), rescued the side after both openers failed to score. Goa started brightly, with their opening pair adding 33 in 3.4 overs, but KP Apanna struck to remove Swapnil Asnodkar to slow the run-rate. After Sagun Kamat and Ganpathi Vignesh had added a further 21, Binny struck in each of his next three overs to hamstring Goa’s chase.

'Uncanny' similarities between Cummins and Steyn

Australia’s new coach Mickey Arthur has drawn a comparison between the 18-year-old debutant Pat Cummins and a young Dale Steyn

Daniel Brettig22-Nov-2011

‘I see a similarity with him and Dale Steyn, when he came into the South African team. The similarities are uncanny, except that Pat Cummins is a lot younger, which makes it all the more exciting’•AFP

Australia’s new coach Mickey Arthur has drawn a comparison between the 18-year-old debutant Pat Cummins and a young Dale Steyn.Arthur became South Africa’s coach in 2005 at the start of Steyn’s international career, and said Cummins can grow into a similarly formidable spearhead for the Australian attack, provided he is managed adroitly.Upon taking the expanded coaching position of Australia, Arthur spoke warmly of the future of the team, and of how he planned to help build a team for sustained success this summer and beyond.Cummins’ redoubtable debut in Johannesburg won him the Man-of-the-Match award, and Arthur said he saw in the 18-year-old the future leader of the attack. Arthur was careful to balance this promise with a word of caution about not overburdening Cummins with too much expectation at such a callow age.”I’m pretty sure he could be [a pillar of the team] down the line. I think we’ve just got to be a little bit careful just to temper the heightened expectation on him,” Arthur said in Melbourne. “You always have expectations of an international cricketer, but expectations might have just gone through the roof.”I see a similarity with him and Dale Steyn, when he came into the South African team. The similarities are uncanny except that Pat Cummins is a lot younger, which makes it all the more exciting.”I do think he needs to be managed, he definitely needs to be managed down the line. What excites me about him is he can bowl quick. Genuine pace at any level of the game ruffles the feathers of batsmen and generally knocks the tail over. He’s immensely exciting.”Equally exciting for Arthur is the chance to take on an Australian team that is showing signs of regeneration after last summer’s Ashes defeat. He said the narrow victory over South Africa to square the series would help build the confidence and the culture of the team, even as it wrestled with various personnel changes.”It is definitely going to help,” Arthur said. “I saw a lot of excitement last night, you come back home and the players are upbeat, Australia’s upbeat, the support staff are upbeat. It is better coming in and leading an environment like that than one that is completely down and downtrodden.”I see the strength [of Australian cricket] in an immensely good structure. Also immensely talented cricketers. There’s some experienced players that are icons of the game and there are also players coming through that are certainly very exciting. It is going to be up to us as coaching staff to mould that potential and make that potential and promise into good, sustainable Test cricketers.”Arthur coached South Africa from 2005 until 2010, taking the team from fifth in the ICC Test rankings to No. 1 for a brief period. A similar task confronts him in Australia, though this time he will be seeking more sustained success.”The key right now is to get some sustainable success and achieving that pinnacle, with South Africa we always tried to knock off little components along the way,” he said. “It was so important to get those components right to get to the ultimate goal. South Africa did that and hopefully we can now replicate that in some way.”The key to ultimate success is strong leadership and clear role definition, but also consistency in selection, so players know exactly where they fit at any given time. I’m sure we’ll cultivate that with Australia.”I do [see similarities] in so many ways. I think the style of play that we want to try to play ultimately is going to be the same, with a few little tweaks because I think our cultures and conditions are similar. You build a team around pillars, and we need to identify who those pillars are and we’ll do that as a selection panel down the line and be consistent.”Consistency was the watchword of the team performance manager Pat Howard, who presided over the appointments of Arthur and also John Inverarity as the national selector. Though the Argus review projected the rotation of coaching duties in some ODI and Twenty20 series to ease the burden on Arthur, Howard said the change wrought in 2011 had to be given the chance to settle before further adjustments occurred.”That is something that is contemplated in the Argus report, but in the short-term we’re definitely focused on getting consistency in selection and culture as we alluded to earlier across all three forms of the game,” Howard said. “So for the time being Mickey will be involved in all three forms of the game in his role, absolutely. But are we counting out that option, no, we’re just building some consistency first.”To that end, Australia’s bowling and fielding coaches, Craig McDermott and Steve Rixon, will be retained until at least the end of the home summer, after making strong starts in their respective roles in Sri Lanka and South Africa.
