Brendan Taylor, the Zimbabwe captain, was named the country’s cricketer and batsman of the year at the annual awards ceremony in Harare on Monday. Left-arm fast bowler Brian Vitori won two awards while medium-pacer Keegan Meth was the bowler of the year.Zimbabwe returned to Test cricket in 2011 after a six-year gap and hosted three teams – Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand – with encouraging results. The standout player in those series was Taylor, who took over the captaincy in June and led Zimbabwe to victory in their Test comeback against Bangladesh.Taylor scored two hundreds in three Tests this year and also became the first Zimbabwean to score back-to-back ODI centuries, against New Zealand in September. He averaged 49.53 in 17 ODIs so far in 2011. Taylor’s performances earned him a contract with Wellington to play in New Zealand’s HRV Cup and helped him beat Vusi Sibanda and Malcolm Waller to claim the Zimbabwe Cricket’s top prize. Sibanda was also nominated along with Tino Mawoyo in the batsman-of-the-year category.Meth, who suffered a severe mouth injury against Bangladesh in August, won the bowler-of-the-year award because of his swing bowling in domestic cricket. In last season’s Logan Cup, Meth took 54 wickets in nine matches an average of 13.31 to finish second on the bowling charts. With Zimbabwe’s fast-bowling options growing over the past year, Vitori won the rookie-of-the-year prize ahead of his new-ball partner Kyle Jarvis. Vitori took five wickets on Test debut against Bangladesh and claimed five-fors in his first two ODIs. A stress fracture of the shin kept him out of the series against New Zealand but Vitori made his comeback in the Stanbic Bank 20 Series. He was also named the most promising player of the year after being nominated alongside legspinner Natsai Mushangwe, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand. On the domestic front the Matabeleland Tuskers, who won the Logan Cup in 2010-11, was named franchise of the year, and their coach, Dave Houghton, was also rewarded for his efforts. Tuskers were also named the best-run franchise. They have secured the services of Chris Gayle for the ongoing Stanbic Bank 20 Series and are unbeaten in the event.

High-scoring win takes Auckland top

A round-up of the latest matches from New Zealand’s Ford Trophy as Auckland go top of the table

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2011Auckland went top of the table as they beat their nearest rivals Otago in a gripping, high-scoring encounter in Dunedin. Chasing a daunting 303 they reached their target with two wickets and one ball to spare after a late charge by Colin de Grandhomme who clubbed 43 off 18 balls with four sixes. He came to the crease after the in-form Bradley Cachopa fell for a career-best 114, his first one-day hundred, which followed the 91 he made in the previous round. That left Auckland needing 61 off 40 balls and de Grandhomme soon made a major dent in the requirement. However, when he departed in the penultimate over there was a chance Otago could sneak back in, but Nos 9 and 10, Ronnie Hira and Michael Bates, held their nerve. Whereas Auckland were anchored by a top-order hundred, Otago had relied on three strong half-centuries from their middle order to propel the innings. Craig Cumming (78) and Nathan McCullum (64) added 93 for the fifth wicket then some powerful striking took them over the 300 mark but it wasn’t quite enough.Grant Elliott turned on the power against Canterbury to set up a 33-run success for Wellington in Timaru. Elliott, the Wellington captain, struck 103 off 84 balls including seven sixes to lift his side to 307 for 5. He added 146 in 15 overs for the fourth wicket with Harry Boam who finished unbeaten on 65 from 48 deliveries. Canterbury never gave up in their run chase but lost wickets at regular intervals against an attack featuring five international bowlers. Boam followed his important innings with two wickets, including that of Andrew Ellis who had given his side a chance with a brisk 40. Andy McKay finished off the match with two wickets in the 47th over to complete a haul of 4 for 63.Mathew Sinclair’s unbeaten 63 guided Central Districts to a comfortable six-wicket victory against Northern Districts in Hamilton. He ensured a jittery top order didn’t waste the excellent work of the bowling attack in dismissing Northern Districts for 169 inside 44 overs. The chase was slightly unsteady at 66 for 3 but the required rate was never an issue and Sinclair found a solid partner in Kieran Noema-Barnett to get the job done. It was a win set up, however, by the bowlers as they never allowed Northern Districts the chance to build a platform. Jacob Oram removed his former New Zealand team-mate Scott Styris for a third-ball duck after Adam Milne had snaffled the Marshall brothers in his opening spell. Peter Borren, the Netherlands captain, also chipped in with a couple.

Happy to see youngsters perform – Dilshan

For the third time on this tour, a Sri Lanka youngster played a vital role in a victory, as Lahiru Thirimanne put in a performance worthy of the Man of the Match award

For the third time on this tour, a Sri Lanka youngster played a vital role in a victory. Bear in mind that Sri Lanka have only won three matches on this tour and it will tell you the importance that the up and coming cricketers have had on the six-week tour of South Africa.Lahiru Thirimanne’s composed 69 off 63 balls was a performance worthy of the Man of the Match award. Even though he didn’t get it, he was the man considered important enough to discuss the match with the media, the task usually given to the person who wins the award, after the day’s events. He said he took his innings in his stride even though the task facing him was an enormous one. “When I went in to bat, the asking-rate was 6.80 and it was a difficult situation to adjust to,” Thirimanne said. “Kumar [Sangakkara] guided me and we narrowed the gap and got into a situation that was manageable.”Thirimanne was brought on the tour as a reserve opener in the Tests and got his opportunity when Tharanga Paranavitana was dropped. He had to wait for a similar situation in the ODIs and was picked in the starting XI when Mahela Jayawardene got injured. He said that the lessons he learnt on his visit to South Africa will serve him well as his career grows.”In the Test match, I had to handle a very sharp pace attack as an opener and that was an experience which will help me in the future. The main adjustment one has to make when playing in South Africa is to adapt to the bounce of the wicket,” he said. “In the one-dayers, my role was to rotate the strike and try to prolong the innings but I was unable to. In this game I played that role quite well, rotated the strike and hit boundaries that helped us win the game.”While Thirimanne recalled his series with careful thoroughness, Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan sat with a small smile on his face. He would return home empty handed but he had achieved something that may prove more important in Sri Lanka’s future.”In the last few series I gave the opportunity to youngsters, especially in this series, and we saw them doing it [well] for Sri Lanka,” Dilshan said. “I am really happy to do that and to see that they grabbed the opportunities and performed under pressure. I believe in my youngsters, that’s the future for Sri Lanka. I want to give them more chances in the middle, so they can get experience. Maybe after the next three to four months, there will be more experienced players in the side. They are showing that they are ready for an international challenge.”Although Dilshan did not lead with the bat, he showed signs of real leadership with his decisions in the field and the faith he showed in the youngsters. Whether he will continue in the position for long enough to see them establish themselves in the national team remains to be seen. Rumours are rising that Dilshan will be replaced as captain before the tri-series in Australia but he said if he asked to carry on, he will do so. “If they offer it to me I will take it, because I am really enjoying my captaincy.”Sri Lankan cricket is set for a mini overhaul in the next few weeks, with Graham Ford confirmed as the new coach in the wake of the Geoff Marsh sacking. It leaves this series little room for context besides acting as the catalyst for major action from the Sri Lanka board. For Dilshan, there is more to it than just that. A Test win, two victories in the ODIs and to come close in Bloemfontein, which could have changed the complexion of the limited-overs series altogether, was cause to celebrate. “Before we came here everyone thought we were the underdog but we proved we are one of the best sides in the world, especially in one-dayers,” he said. “Hopefully, we can carry this performance into the next few tours.”

Mohammad Amir released from jail

Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan fast bowler, has been released from Portland Young Offenders Institution in Dorset after serving half of a six-month sentence for his part in a spot-fixing scam.Amir is expected to spend the next few weeks in London before returning to his native Pakistan. He will meet his lawyers to draw up an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the five-year ban imposed on him by the International Cricket Council. He has a visa to stay in England until the end of March and there is no suggestion that he risks the threat of deportation. An ICC tribunal banned Amir for five years in February last year, his team-mate Mohammad Asif was given a seven-year ban, with two years suspended, and the captain, Salman Butt, was banned for ten years, five suspended. Shortly after the decision Amir announced his intent to appeal the decision to the CAS, an arbitration body set up to settle disputes relating to sport.Amir and his two team-mates were sentenced in November 2011 at Southwark Crown Court of conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat at gambling after a plot was uncovered in a sting operation to bowl deliberate no-balls in a Test against England in 2010. Amir and Butt lost an appeal against the sentence in November in the Court of Appeal in London. The judge, Mr Justice Cooke, ruled at Southwark Crown Court that the affair was “so serious that only imprisonment will suffice”. Butt was sentenced to two and a half years, Asif was jailed for one year, and Amir for six months. Mazhar Majeed, the players’ agent, received a sentence of two years eight months. Under the terms of UK law, all were eligible for release after serving half their sentences.Majeed had boasted to undercover reporters that he could arrange for Pakistan cricketers to rig elements of games for money. He was surreptitiously filmed accepting £150,000 in cash from a journalist.Mr Justice Cooke said: “‘It’s not cricket’ was an adage. It is the insidious effect of your actions on professional cricket and the followers of it which make the offences so serious.”Amir apologised through his lawyer for his involvement in spot-fixing, stating: “I want to apologise to all in Pakistan and all others to whom cricket is important. I did the wrong thing. I was trapped, because of my stupidity. I panicked.”The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, said in the Court of Appeal that the corruption had been “carefully prepared” and the cricketers had betrayed their team, their country, their sport and the “followers of the game throughout the world”. Lord Judge accepted that Amir’s guilty plea should be counted in his favour.Amir seemed to contravene his playing ban last summer by appearing for Addington 1743 Cricket Club in the Surrey League. He insisted that he had been told it was only a friendly and that he had made an innocent mistake. It was later reported that the ICC had decided to let Amir off with a warning.
