Redfern brings up first ton of the season

05-Apr-2012
ScorecardDan Redfern celebrated a double first to lead an impressive Derbyshire fightback on the first day against Northamptonshire at Derby.Redfern, a 21-year-old left-hander, scored his maiden first-class century and also achieved the honour of becoming the first batsmen to make a hundred in the 2012 season.Ross Whiteley made 83 and shared a stand of 160 in 39 overs with Redfern, who made 110, following a fine spell from Jack Brooks which reduced the home side to 50 for 4 after Northants had won the toss.Whiteley finally fell to Brooks who finished with 5 for 61 as Derbyshire were bowled out for 286 but Northants slipped to 28 for 3 to trail by 258 at the close. The decision to put Derbyshire in looked a good one once Brooks switched to the Racecourse End with a stiff northerly at his back to take 3 for 17 in five overs, including New Zealand Test opener Martin Guptill.Guptil drove Chaminda Vaas for six and looked well set until he clipped Brooks firmly to square leg where Kyle Coetzer did well to cling on in the cold conditions. Wayne Madsen made only one in his first game as Derbyshire captain before he played on to Lee Daggett and Paul Borrington also fell for a single when he edged Brooks to first slip.Wes Durston looked in good touch until he played across the line at Brooks in the 19th over but Redfern played with authority to reach 50 from 55 balls before lunch. He had a let-off on 59 when David Willey dropped him diving at extra cover and Northants were to regret that as the fifth wicket pair took control. The century stand came up in 25 overs and Whiteley twice drove James Middlebrook for six, the second of which brought up his half-century which came off 85 balls and also included seven fours.Redfern was given another life on 88 when Niall O’Brien dropped him off Middlebrook but he got to his hundred in his 46th first-class game by clipping Daggett for three through midwicket.Despite those two dropped catches, it had been a fine display of batting but when he was bowled by Willey aiming for his 14th four, the last six wickets fell for 76. But Derbyshire ended the day on top as Tony Palladino, who broke his jaw less than three weeks ago, had Rob Newton caught at second slip before Tim Groenewald removed Stephen Peters and Coetzer in consecutive overs.

CLT20 set to have team from Pakistan

The Champions League Twenty20 is set to have a team from Pakistan for the first time. The BCCI has said it will recommend to the tournament’s governing council that it had no objection to Pakistani participation

The Champions League Twenty20 is set to have a team from Pakistan for the first time. The BCCI, the league’s largest stakeholder, has said it would inform the tournament’s governing council ahead of its May 28 meeting that it had no objection to the participation of a team from Pakistan. The decision was taken at the BCCI’s working committee meeting in Chennai today, where it was also decided to distribute approx $13m to ex-Indian players, set up a BCCI anti-corruption unit, and set up matches between IPL teams and Associate/Affiliate countries.BCCI president N Srinivasan said the CLT20 governing council had already decided to invite a Pakistani team for the next tournament, to be held in India in October; the BCCI was now concurring with that decision. “The CLT20 is owned by the BCCI, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa, so we will recommend to the governing council that the BCCI has no objection and is prepared to invite a Pakistan team,” he said. The news was welcomed by the PCB, which saw it as the first step towards restoring cricketing ties with India. The PCB had been pushing for the inclusion of sides from Pakistan, the only major Test-playing nation to not have teams in either the qualifiers or the main round of the tournament since it got off the ground in 2009. Pakistan were among the countries included in the first tournament, in 2008, but that event was cancelled after the Mumbai terrorist attacks and Pakistani teams had been kept out of subsequent tournaments. The current champions are Sialkot Stallions – who, coincidentally, were also the representatives in the 2008 tournament that was never held. The Sialkot Regional Cricket Association had requested the PCB last month to make efforts to enable the participation of Sialkot in the Champions League. The PCB, in turn, had said that Sialkot’s participation was dependent on the restoration of bilateral ties between India and Pakistan.Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI vice-president and a minister in the Indian federal government, said there was no interference or green signal from the government. “Though PCB were asking us from the last three years, we did not consider that,” Shukla said. “But now we felt it was good time to invite them and have acceded to the PCB request.”It is understood that it was Srinivasan who proposed the matter during the discussion in Chennai. Everyone felt that the political climate was conducive to a team from Pakistan to come and play and the working committee members accepted the proposal unanimously.Pakistan players are currently excluded from the Indian Premier League as well. Shukla, also the IPL chairman, had said last month that their participation was also dependent on the resumption of India-Pakistan cricket ties.

Temos boas opções no elenco, o Marcelo (Benevenuto), Kanu, Helerson… Sinceramente eu não me preocupo. Vamos esperar a definição do DM – disse.

Pakistan's spinners pose threat – De Mel

Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel has said the Sri Lanka batsmen should be wary of the Pakistani spinners during the upcoming series

Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel has said the Sri Lanka batsmen should to be wary of the two Pakistan spinners, Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman, during the upcoming Twenty20, ODI and Test series.”It is the Pakistani spinners we need to be careful of. Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman are of a different class compared to our spinners. Only Rangana Herath comes anywhere close to them,” De Mel said.Offspinner Ajmal and left-arm spinner Rehman have been at the forefront of Pakistan’s recent successes. The pair took 43 wickets in Pakistan’s 3-0 win over No. 1 ranked England in their last Test series played in the UAE early this year. Ajmal was also the leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets during Sri Lanka’s three-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE last year.”The advantage the Pakistan team has is that it also has batsmen who can be useful bowlers, for instance opener Mohammad Hafeez, who can bowl offbreaks,” he said. “This adds a lot of variety to their attack and balances their team nicely.”Their fast bowlers are quite effective with the reverse swing. That’s another area our batsmen have got to be wary of. Pakistan have mastered the art of reverse swing from the era of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Umar Gul and left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan are very good at using the old ball.”A former fast bowler himself, De Mel said Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers need to develop their skills to master reverse swing, an art that needs a lot of practice to be perfected.Recollecting Sri Lanka’s last Test series against England at home which ended in a 1-1 draw, De Mel said the batsmen needed to put up 400-plus totals in the first innings if Sri Lanka are to have any chance of winning. Sri Lanka’s highest total in that series was 318 in the Galle Test and they failed to go past the 300-run mark in the Colombo Test.”At least three of the top five batsmen need to get a big score if we are to come up with competitive totals. Off the middle-order, two of the three most experienced batsmen must score runs,” De Mel said, referring to the trio of Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera who have a combined tally of 25,001 runs and 73 hundreds in Tests.De Mel admitted the middle order had been put under pressure due to the poor starts provided by the openers. Sri Lanka tried Tharanga Paranavitana and Lahiru Thirimanne as opening partners with Tillakaratne Dilshan in the series against South Africa and England, but none of them were able to settle into the role.”I don’t think Thirimanne is an opener. He is good in the middle order. We persisted with him because the previous selection committee had picked him as an opener and we wanted to give Thirimanne a fair chance to prove himself. We are thinking of bringing back Paranavitana to open with Dilshan.”Thirimanne, who has been named in Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 and ODI squads, bats in the middle order in the shorter versions, but is unlikely to be named in the Test squad. In seven Tests in which he has opened the batting, he has only gone past 50 once. When questioned why former Test opener Upul Tharanga is not being considered for the position, De Mel said, “Upul’s technique against the new ball is suspect. He is playing well away from his body and that is why we have decided to bring him down the order in the ODIs and play him in the middle where he has contributed.”There’s, at present, a paucity of quality opening batsmen in the country. We are looking at Dimuth Karunaratne as an opener for the Sri Lanka A tour to South Africa and also wicketkeeper Kushal Janith Perera, who bats at No. 3, as an opener in the limited-overs version.”The Sri Lanka A team is due to tour South Africa and Zimbabwe next month.Another youngster Dinesh Chandimal is likely to be named in the Test squad but will find it difficult to make it into a line-up that comprises Dilshan, Paranavitana, Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene. De Mel added Mathews would be picked purely as a batsman and may bowl occasionally.”Our bowlers are not penetrative enough. To win a Test you need to take 20 wickets. What I have observed about our quick bowlers is that they come at you initially around 135 [kph] but are about ten kilometers (per hour) slower when they return for their second spell. The four to five bowlers in the line-up should all contribute to take wickets.”Predicting a close contest during the Test series, De Mel said the pitches used would play a key role. “The side that performs on the day will hold the advantage. I hope we get some decent wickets with some bounce. We make slow and low wickets and end up losing. The P Sara Oval wicket (where Sri Lanka lost to England) was slow and low and lacked bounce.”Sri Lanka and Pakistan play two Twenty20 matches before the ODIs and Tests. De Mel said the selectors had picked the 14-member squad for the two Twenty20s in Hambantota with an eye on the forthcoming World Twenty20 (which will be hosted by Sri Lanka in September).”We have picked Isuru Udana who is a specialist Twenty20 bowler and legspinning all-rounder Kaushal Lokuarachchi whom we think can be useful in the shorter version.”De Mel said that apart from spinner Ajantha Mendis, who is still recuperating from a back injury and was not considered for selection, Farvez Maharoof and Suranga Lakmal were left out because Nuwan Pradeep and Dilhara Fernando were declared fit.

In an unexpected result, Afghanistan Under-19s made the semi-finals, knocking Bangladesh under-19s out of the tournament in a group B encounter. Afghanistan successfully chased a revised target of 220 from 42 overs following rain after Bangladesh had made 240 for 9.Afghanistan captain Javed Ahmadi made 71 and Shabir Noori cracked an aggressive 57 to guide the chase that became a little tense towards the end due to a climbing run-rate and two wickets falling for three runs. However, Najibullah Zadran smashed three sixes and two fours in 18 balls to take his side into the semi-finals with nine deliveries to spare.Bangladesh, led by opener Soumya Sarkar and No. 3 Salman Hossain, were going well at 159 for 4 but then collapsed to 185 for 8. A ninth-wicket stand of 49 runs in 4.3 overs provided them a competitive total to defend. Afghanistan achieved it eventually but not without glimpses of hope for Bangladesh. In the other group B match, Qatar Under-19s lost by 87 runs to Sri Lanka Under-19s in a match reduced to 26 overs due to rain. Pabasara Waduge scored 71 to guide Sri Lanka to 124 for 2 in 26 overs before rain intervened. Facing a revised target of 188, Qatar were kept on a tight leash by the Sri Lanka bowlers, led by offspinner Tharindu Kaushal who took three wickets. A 45-run partnership for the eighth wicket was the only resistance Qatar could muster as they ended on 100 for 8.Pakistan Under-19s followed up a thrilling one-run win over India by bowling Malaysia Under-19s out for 53 after amassing 302 in a group A game. Only Malaysia No. 7 Pavithren Nadaesan got into double figures as a combined effort by Mohammad Nawaz, Mir Hamza and Azizullah reduced the hosts to 36 for 9 before a last-wicket partnership of 17, the highest in the innings, took them past 50.Malaysia’s middle order crumbled as they slipped from 21 for 2 in the ninth over to 25 for 7 in the 19th. Nawaz, who scored a quick half-century and claimed three wickets, was adjudged the Man of the Match.Pakistan’s commanding batting performance was led by an 85-run opening stand between Sami Aslam, who had scored a century against India, and captain Babar Azam. A 69-run partnership for the second wicket and a 116-run partnership in 63 balls for the fourth wicket seemed to put the game beyond Malaysia’s reach. Umar Waheed was the highest scorer of the match with 76 off 52.India Under-19s had to struggle to reach 176 against Nepal Under-19s, before bowling them out for 91 in another group A match. The bowling performance was led by Delhi left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra, who took four wickets. Nepal were reduced to 20 for 5 at one stage after the target was reduced to 173 from 47 overs due to rain. A bit of a recovery ensued but proved insufficient. The bowling covered up India’s faults in batting, as besides Baba Aparajith (55) and captain Unmukt Chand (47), no one contributed anything of note. Left-arm spinner Rahul Vishwakarma, after a match-winning performance in Nepal’s previous game against Malaysia, proved effective again with three wickets. Bhuvan Karki also struck thrice as India lost their last five wickets for 23 runs after having been 83 for 1 earlier. In the semi-finals, Afghanistan will meet Pakistan on June 28 while India will take on Sri Lanka the next day.
