James Vince’s third LV= County Championship century of the season saw Hampshire put themselves in a promising position on a rain-shortened first day New Road.Vince and Liam Dawson were both dropped at first slip by Moeen Ali as their partnership of 158 took Hampshire to 197 for 3 when play ended with 43 overs lost because of bad light and rain.Vince had made only four when he was given a crucial let-off and the cost mounted as he played with increasing conviction for an unbeaten 106 packed with 18 fours and a six from 148 balls. On a gloomy morning, Worcestershire were clearly expecting helpful bowling conditions when Daryl Mitchell won the toss and they were rewarded straightaway when Jimmy Adams was caught behind off Alan Richardson’s third ball. Adams was dismissed for his seventh duck in 21 championship innings in an all-or-nothing season in which he scored 219 not out when Worcestershire were beaten at the Ageas Rose Bowl in April.Adams came into the return fixture on the back of another double century against Northamptonshire last week but it was a different story as Hampshire struggled in a sustained opening spell of 2 for 33 by Richardson, who kept the batsmen under pressure for 14 overs and claimed his 61st championship wicket of the season when Moeen held his first chance of the day from Michael Roberts.Hampshire would have become for 38 for 3 if Moeen had taken a fairly straightforward edge from Vince. Graeme Cessford was the unlucky bowler and, to stoke up his frustration, he conceded four consecutive boundaries to Vince in his next over. With momentum quickly shifting in Hampshire’s favour, Vince moved to 50 from 77 balls but Moeen also dropped Dawson off Richardson shortly before he reached a half-century, containing only three fours.Play was held up for 50 minutes after lunch and on the resumption runs flowed at an alarming rate for Worcestershire. Even when they managed to break the partnership it was only in the middle of an onslaught on Cessford. In an action-paced over, Dawson pulled a six and was then run out by Ross Whiteley from cover. This brought Vince back on strike with 92 to his name and he swept past his hundred with a pull for six and two fours from the next four balls.

Whatmore confident of better show in UAE

Dav Whatmore, the Pakistan coach, has said the recent Test loss against Zimbabwe has been “embarrassing, upsetting and disappointing”, but on the positive side, has provided the team with preparation ahead of the upcoming series in the UAE

Pakistan are yet to win a series under Whatmore, who has six months remaining in his two-year contract•AFP

Dav Whatmore, the Pakistan coach, has said the recent Test loss against Zimbabwe has been “embarrassing, upsetting and disappointing”, but on the positive side, has provided the team with preparation ahead of the upcoming series in the UAE.”All three adjectives (upsetting, disappointed and embarrassing) can be used to describe the way I feel after the defeat against Zimbabwe,” Whatmore told ESPNcricinfo. “I understand you cannot win with these sort of performances but I don’t want to blame. I rather look for reasons and try to see things in a perspective than being judgmental.”I know things were not good as we were a bit naughty with both bat and ball. But in the end, we only lost one Test match. I know it’s Zimbabwe and I am also not happy with the result at all. I would like to think and public should understand that Zimbabwe team gave us a better fight than what the whole public thought. It wasn’t easy breaking them down as they were not a bad team in their home conditions.”Pakistan are yet to win a series under Whatmore, who has six months remaining in his two-year contract, and the team’s next assignment – the two-Test series against South Africa in the UAE – is a tough one. But it was in the UAE that Pakistan earned a remarkable win against the then No. 1 side, England, and Whatmore understood that there would be expectations this time too.”I have confidence in the Pakistan team,” he said. “You can’t just say (that we don’t have a chance). The conditions will be entirely different.”I feel we are in a better position than before. At least Zimbabwe gave us better preparation and they were bit stronger than what a lot of us thought.”The selectors are likely to consider Taufeeq Umar for the opening role, with Mohammad Hafeez’s selection for the series in jeopardy. Whatmore said there was a need for a reshuffle in the XI as the series would be played in entirely different conditions from what were encountered in Zimbabwe.”There is good ground for discussion on the change ahead of (South Africa series),” he said. “You are going from one competition to another in totally different conditions and against an opposition that has a different formation. So there are number of variations and I don’t think we can fit the same set of eleven players to play the number one team. But yes, we need to be consistently looking towards strengthening the team combination.”Whatmore’s coaching and Misbah-ul-Haq’s captaincy came under severe criticism after the series in Zimbabwe, but ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB has no immediate plan to remove the head coach, although they are not intent on renewing his contract that expires in April 2014.”Misbah has some wonderful leadership qualities and has been successful since he took over recently,” Whatmore said. “My observations are that by nature he is a methodical person who thinks deeply before making decisions. This is reflected in his batting as well. He takes a little time at the beginning but at the end his contribution is effective. His consistency in contributions during 2013 has been second to none. It’s easy for people to be critical.”Whatmore, 59, might not have had the positive results with the squad, but he insisted that he has been doing his job whole-heartedly. “I can not control what people think,” he said. “I know what I am doing being a professional coach with 15 years of international experience and nobody has such experience. When you are about to conclude your contract, these questions do emerge. But the renewal depends on mutual willingness. I know what I do is done with the best of intention and at the end of the day I can sleep straight, comfortably. When asked if the results haunted him, Whatmore replied, “I don’t worry. Everyday I need to know what we are doing is correct. Like everybody, I also make mistakes and I admit them. I am doing the best possible job what I can do.”

O momento instável do Grêmio acendeu a esperança do São Luiz.

Pakistan's chance to solve batting problems

The preview of the fifth ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in Sharjah

The Preview by Firdose Moonda10-Nov-2013Match factsMonday, November 11, 2013
Start time 1500 local (1100GMT)Dav Whatmore will have an eye on fixing Pakistan’s fragile batting before his coaching stint ends in February•AFP

Big PictureWith the result of the series already determined, the fifth ODI could fade into obscurity. However, it serves as the precursor to the return series in South Africa, which will begin later this month. If South Africa manage to win, they will take bragging rights into the three-match affair at home, but if Pakistan can pull one back, it could give them some much-needed buoyancy. The conditions, of course, will be completely different to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth or Centurion, but it could still act as some sort of prologue. The Sharjah strip was the most spinner friendly and will be more testing for the batsmen than Abu Dhabi’s pitch was. It should favour Pakistan, but with the slew of problems facing them, they will go into the fixture needing motivation. On the eve of the game, news broke that Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore’s contract will not be renewed. While that may not be unexpected, it has left him with something to prove in the time he has left in charge. If he can fix Pakistan’s weak batting line-up, it will be the best parting gift he can give them.South Africa have made incremental improvements, which is promising for their coach Russell Domingo. He still has work to do with the top order and will want to use this game to start fine tuning as South Africa look to find a settled combination as they build towards the World Cup.Form guide (last five completed games, most recent first)
Pakistan LLWLW
South Africa WWLWL
In the spotlightAB de Villiers said South Africa always felt they were in with a chance against Pakistan’s middle-order batsmen, who will feel obliged to end the series on a positive note. Umar Amin, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq and Shahid Afridi have scored a combined total of 168 runs in 12 innings against South Africa, and not a single half-century between them.He could end up being the overall leading wicket-taker in the series, so Imran Tahir will want to put in a strong final effort to cap a period during which he has impressed beyond expectation. He has proved wily with variations, and has done a good job of cleaning up the tail, but he has threatened to go for more runs in every game. He’s still brimming with confidence, but will need to add more control to his bowling to end on a high.Team newsChanges to the XI haven’t helped Pakistan much and they will hope their current crop make quick improvements. They could change the wicketkeeper or bring in Umar Amin in place of the misfiring Asad Shafiq. The bowling unit is likely to stay the same, unless they choose to give Abdur Rehman a game.Pakistan: (likely) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Sohaib Maqsood, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Asad Shafiq/Umar Amin, 6 Umar Akmal/Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Junaid Khan, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad IrfanWith the series wrapped up, South Africa may experiment, although they will limit it to the bowling department. Vernon Philander, who was included after much public pressure, is yet to get a game and may come in along with either Wayne Parnell or even Robin Peterson, who has also carried drinks since being dropped after the Abu Dhabi Test. Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe may get a rest.South Africa: (likely)1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 JP Duminy, 5 AB de Villiers (capt), 6 David Miller, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8, 9 and 10 Wayne Parnell/Vernon Philander/Morne Morkel/Dale Steyn/Lonwabo Tsotsobe/Dale Steyn, 11 Imran TahirStats and triviaPakistan have been bowled out in all four matches in this series, while South Africa have been dismissed just twice. South Africa also have the only centurion of the series – Quinton de Kock. The top three wicket-takers in this series so far have been spinners, with Imran Tahir leading the charts. He has nine scalps, while Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi have eight each. Quotes”At the moment we have tried different players in our order but the problem is that the guys who are good batsmen can’t bowl as a fully-fledged bowling option, and if we pick the bowlers who are really good in bowling then we lack batting. We are really missing a quality allrounder who can deliver in bowling and batting in pressure situations.
“I really felt like we were 11 guys out there, which sometimes you don’t feel, especially when a team is not doing well. It’s very difficult when the guys drift off to the boundary to keep the attention and the focus of the guys directed to the middle. I felt that right throughout the 50 overs tonight and that made a big difference.”

Lord's humiliation fired turnaround

Australia’s dramatic turnaround from Test match lightweights to the brink of regaining the Ashes is the flowering of a regeneration that began in the aftermath of shattering defeat in the second match of the previous series at Lord’s, the coach, Darren Lehmann, believes. After completing a second consecutive battering of England at Adelaide Oval, this time despite a pitch that appeared to favour the visitors, Lehmann and the captain, Michael Clarke, said the team’s change in fortunes had been a long time in the making.Lehmann pinpointed the 347-run defeat at Lord’s as the moment at which the team resolved to improve, drawing the next match at Old Trafford and beginning to shape the plans and attitudes that have been writ large across the two matches in Brisbane and Adelaide, won by the combined margin of 599 runs as the fearsome Mitchell Johnson harvested 17 wickets.”I think we started to turn around after Lord’s, after the way we played, the brand of cricket we’re trying to play,” Lehmann said. “We’re starting to bat a lot better, bowl a lot better. If you look at the last five matches, we’ve certainly bowled a lot better, containing England with our plans.”They’re pretty driven this lot. I’m really pleased at what they bring to the table and how they’ve gone about things over the last few Test matches. We changed a few things in England and they’ve been a really good, driven bunch of players and support staff who want the right goal for Australian cricket and that’s not just short term, that’s long term.”It helps when you win. It would have been nice in England not to have weather but we can’t look back. We probably should have won one or two Test matches there. Once you start to win it makes it easier for guys to understand where they’re going.”Clarke, who has contributed two centuries in as many Tests but been far from the only standout performer for his side, said victory in Brisbane had helped build confidence among players who had been striving for vindication of their efforts since England.”I think the boys took a lot of confidence out of Brisbane, but I think we took a lot of confidence out of the back half of England to be honest,” Clarke said. “It’s nice to see everybody contributing, that’s the most pleasing thing about these first two Tests. Although Mitch sits here as Man of the Match once again I think everyone in the team has contributed”These two wins are satisfying because of the work we’ve put in over a long period of time. In our opinion it’s not a fluke that we’ve won the first two Test matches. It’s the hard work that we’ve put in. The reality is we’ve won two Test matches in the past 12 months and that’s not acceptable as an Australian Test team. So our feet are well and truly cemented on the ground.”Australia’s selectors have named an unchanged squad for the Perth Test, due to begin on Friday, but have kept Doug Bollinger and Nathan Coulter-Nile on standby as reserve fast bowlers, pending the recoveries of Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle and Johnson.”When we get to Perth, as we do for every Test match, every players will be assessed by our medical staff and if they’re fully fit and able to perform at 100 per cent, they’ll be available for selection,” Clarke said. “From the information I have now, everybody’s pulled up fine.”
