Bracewell delighted despite time running out

It is to Gloucestershire’s credit that they pushed Hampshire so close. On a fourth day which started with a team still batting in their first innings, their approach at least allowed for specks of excitement. In the end, it was time that defeated them. In control for much of the game, they gave themselves every chance of converting their good work and could leave more than satisfied with the cricket they have played. In a week of back-slapping declarations, they very nearly contributed one of their own.For director of cricket John Bracewell, it was a fairly easy decision to make. “In the end, if we got it right, 80 overs [to bowl at Hampshire] was the number,” he said. “It was just a matter of how far we could get ahead.”It was a fine effort from Gloucestershire, who have an injury list that includes their talismanic captain Michael Klinger. Truth be told, they have arguably not been able to field a side that you could, without doubt, label their “best XI”. According to Bracewell, displays like today merely show the character of his squad.”We’ve been on the other end of these sorts of games where we’re the ones having to bat ourselves out of trouble in the second innings. It’s such a good feeling to have batted ourselves into a point of superiority in the first innings. There in lay the difference – it gives us a lot of confidence. We had a lot of character in store in drawing some big games over the last month or so. “Gloucestershire wasted no time in putting bat to ball, adding 58 runs in 14 overs, before declaring with a first innings lead of 207. Will Gidman was removed by James Tomlinson early on, before Adam Rouse and Benny Howell found the rope often enough to take the visitors score past 500.Going into lunch, things looked promising for them. David Payne had Michael Carberry caught behind before Will Gidman took the valuable wicket of Will Smith, who has been a rock at No. 3, with a ball that cramped him for room and then seemed to get big on him.Jimmy Adams followed soon after lunch when he was deemed to have given a catch to bat-pad off the bowling of Tom Smith. He was less than impressed, lingering and then walking off and taking his frustration out on his gloves when he stepped over the boundary. After tea James Vince, having looked assured and compact in defense, edged Smith through to Rouse. It was the wicket that alerted us to the presence of a crowd; the collective gasps having locals thinking the unthinkable – a first defeat of the season, by an innings, no less. The gasps were just as audible when, with 11.4 overs of play left, Howell bowled Adam Wheater through the gate for the sixth wicket. By then, Sean Ervine had steadied things at the other end with a strutting half-century. Calm and composed, with the air of a bouncer who knows you are just not getting in, his reverse-sweep for four to take him to 52 was a good a sign as any that Hampshire had little to worry about.Adams echoed those sentiments at stumps. This match was their game in hand of Worcestershire and a win would have seen them jump above them and back into first. They remain second but with Surrey hot on their heels after their impressive win at Colwyn Bay. He also admitted that, were it not for the rain that washed out almost an entire day’s play, Gloucestershire could have won.”We have had to battle hard,” said Adams. “Gloucestershire have outplayed us for three or so days and we’ve probably been helped by the weather. We were in a good position on day one but we threw that away really.”It was only two games ago that we beat Essex pretty comprehensively here. It would also be nice to win the toss at some point and made use of the best conditions but that’s probably a bit of an excuse, really. Every game from here on in is going to be tough.”With five games left, Adams has earmarked “two or three wins” to ensure Hampshire are in the promotion places comfortably by the end of the season. Next week’s encounter at Colchester will see them without Kyle Abbott who will report for international duty for South Africa in Sri Lanka. He is set to return at the end of August, but is likely to miss the final two games, against Kent and Glamorgan, should he represent his Ram Slam franchise Dolphins in the Champions League. In his place, Hampshire have announced the signing of Australian bowler Nathan Rimmington. Initially on a match-by-match limited overs contract, he may be enlisted for four-day duty with doubts over the fitness over a couple of bowlers, including David Balcombe who was suffering from a sore knee on the final day of this match.

Lesões pesam, time perde intensidade e falha nos pênaltis: a queda do Fla

O adversário é o Emelec, do Equador, no Estádio George Campwell.

Root, Anderson script England turnaround

England turned the Trent Bridge Test around on the fourth day thanks to a record tenth-wicket partnership from Joe Root and James Anderson

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy12-Jul-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFor three days England were a speck in India’s mirrors. Achieving a result would take some doing on this pitch, but if anyone was in position to think of winning it was India. By the time day four came to an end, the equation had turned on its head.England started the day trailing by 105 with just one wicket remaining. When they lost that wicket in the fifth over after lunch, they were leading by 39, after Joe Root and James Anderson extended their partnership to 198, a Test record for the tenth wicket. By stumps, they had sent back India’s top three, and all three wickets owed more to the batsman’s choice of shot than to the bowling.Batting in much the same way they had done during their first-innings partnership, M Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara put on 91 serene runs for the second wicket before Vijay jumped down the pitch and looked to show Moeen Ali who was boss, with half an hour to go for stumps. It wasn’t the greatest idea, considering Shikhar Dhawan had been out doing the exact same thing just before tea, punching a full-toss straight back to Moeen. Vijay aimed at the stands behind long-on, but only managed a thin outside edge to Matt Prior, who also took off the bails to give the umpire a choice of dismissal. This was the last ball of the 41st over. First ball of the 42nd was short and wide. The cut had been a profitable shot till this point in Pujara’s innings; now it went uppishly and straight to Ben Stokes at point. Stokes juggled the ball, and it hit his face and popped out to his left, but he put in a dive and managed to grab it one-handed.Till then it had seemed as if India would end the day having recovered the poise that Anderson and Root’s partnership had punched out of them. England’s seamers had bent their backs and asked a few questions of both Vijay and Pujara, and there was a slight increase in the frequency of uncertain bounce, but the second-wicket pair answered most of them with equanimity.Vijay offered a chance to Matt Prior before he had gotten off the mark, edging an Anderson outswinger after he pushed at the ball without moving his feet. Prior, though, was a touch late in diving to his right; the ball carried, but sped away narrowly wide of his gloves. The compactness of the first innings returned after that, and Vijay’s bat remained scrupulously close to his body even on the odd occasion when he was beaten.Pujara, meanwhile, had looked in fluent touch right from the moment he walked in and drilled the first two balls he faced, from Moeen, to the cover and long-off boundaries. He carried on punishing anything remotely loose after tea, and England must have wondered when their next wicket would come when he took two fours off one Plunkett over to join Vijay in the 50s. As it happened, they didn’t have to wait too much longer, or work particularly hard, for that moment.India, in the morning, had been made to wait much, much longer for their breakthrough. Anderson, who made his maiden Test fifty, was on course to join Root on a three-figure score when he went after a full, wide ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and edged it to the wicketkeeper. It was Bhuvneshwar’s fifth wicket. Root, who had hardly put a foot wrong since walking in early in yesterday’s middle session, was unbeaten on 154.In recent months, India have let a number of promising positions slip from their grasp in overseas Tests. Trent Bridge now joined Durban and Wellington. England had been on the mat yesterday afternoon, seven down and 255 behind. Their last three pairs had more than doubled their score. The morning began with Root steering Bhuvneshwar to deep point and chastising himself for taking the single and exposing Anderson to the strike so early. He needn’t have worried. England’s No. 11 played out the rest of the over comfortably, and even whipped Bhuvneshwar from off stump past midwicket for four. That first-ball single set the tone for India’s tactics throughout the session. In their second Test against Sri Lanka, England had paid for their approach of giving Angelo Mathews the single and focusing all their attacking efforts on his lower-order partners. Now Root was on the receiving end of similar largesse from India. He generally declined the singles early in the over, but the defensive fields did little to stop him from finding the boundary. He top-edged a slash off Ishant Sharma through where second slip might have been to move into the 90s. In the next over, against Mohammed Shami, he played two gorgeous cover drives, the first one through extra cover to go from 93 to 97, the second through cover point to go to 101.There was nothing in the surface to trouble either batsman, but India missed a few half-chances to end the partnership. England were on 378, and Root on 92, when he pushed the ball to mid-on and took off for a single. He had given up any hope of making the non-striker’s end safely but Mohammed Shami’s throw was wide of the stumps.Later, soon after England had passed 400, Anderson prodded the ball to point and set off, only for Root to send him back. A direct hit would have meant the end for Anderson, but Bhuvneshwar’s throw was inaccurate. In between, India’s mostly ineffectual short-ball barrage to Anderson nearly earned a reward when he popped one low towards gully, where M Vijay dropped a difficult chance, diving to his right. India kept adding men to the cordon, and at one point they had a semicircle of fielders surrounding Anderson, waiting for him to fend one in the air. That almost never happened, and he usually managed to keep the ball down. But when the chances came, he didn’t hold himself back. An uppercut off Ishant took him past his previous highest Test score of 34. Three overs later, Anderson jumped down the pitch and clubbed the ball past the midwicket boundary to go from 47 to 51. It was the first time he had reached fifty in any form of cricket – his previous best was an unbeaten 49 made while opening the batting for Burnley against Todmorden 13 years ago.Soon India’s attack began to resemble something out of the Lancashire League, as India went through the motions in the extra half-hour of the morning session, when they rested their fast bowlers and threw on first M Vijay, hoping he could winkle something out with his offbreaks, and then Stuart Binny, who sent down four overs to finally nudge his output for the innings into double figures. This surely wasn’t what India would have wanted from their seam-bowling allrounder when they decided to give him a Test debut.

Prior looks ahead as surgery date set

Matt Prior will have surgery early next month to try and overcome the Achilles problem which forced him to take a break from the game and admitted he has “a long road back.”

George Dobell15-Aug-2014Matt Prior will have surgery early next month to try and overcome the Achilles problem which forced him to take a break from the game but admitted he has “a long road back.”Prior, a veteran of 79 Tests, announced his decision to stand down for the rest of the season following the second Investec Test against India at Lord’s as he bids to regain his fitness. He will undergo surgery on his Achilles tendon on September 4 and hopes to return to the game at the start of the 2015 English season.”It was pretty bad, to be honest,” Prior told ESPNcricinfo. “I went as long and as hard as I could, but I couldn’t go any further. I still hurt. I’ve seen the specialist and surgeons and I’m having an operation on September 4.””It’s not the end, but there is a long road back and it starts from September 4 with four months of rehab to get as fit as I possibly can.”It was a massive decision, but I went as long as I could. It’s been shown by specialists that I couldn’t physically have gone on any longer. So it’s not time to get it right, get fit again and come back stronger.”Despite his personal disappointment, Prior welcomed the bright start made by his successor as England’s Test keeper, Jos Buttler.”I think he’s done brilliantly,” Prior said. “The one thing he has done that is massive for keepers is scoring runs. When you’re scoring runs it takes pressure off your wicketkeeping. It allows you to just play and feel relaxed. And when you’re relaxed you keep a lot better. Jos has done brilliantly and good luck to him.”It’s a bit strange being at the Test and [just] watching. It’s the first time in many years. But I gave it everything. I was very proud of everything I’ve done for England as Test wicketkeeper for however many years. But Jos has come in and done very well. “

Robson fails on Middlesex return

There is time enough to discuss Sam Robson’s future as a Test batsman with England not playing red ball cricket again until the spring. But for an increasingly nervous-looking Middlesex, the moment for some serious action arrived today – and they found a slightly unlikely yet perfect man for the job in Neil Dexter.Robson did nothing to silence the debate about his technique by being bowled off stump, playing no shot against Oliver Hannon-Dalby after making only a dozen. And when Nick Gubbins and Dawid Malan fell for similarly low scores, those Middlesex supporters fearing relegation for a team that topped the table in mid-season were sitting anything but comfortable in the September sunshine. There was the reassuring sight of Chris Rogers to ease concern a little. But Middlesex’s captain needed some reliable company – and Dexter, perhaps somewhat surprisingly given most of his Championship scores this season, proved ideally suited to the role.Warwickshire, currently third, are unlikely to win the title. And Middlesex, who may be third from bottom by tomorrow night, should not go down. But stranger things have happened, on both counts, and had Jeetan Patel enjoyed one of his best days with the ball then this contest might be in the grip of the Bears despite the loss of 89 overs yesterday. As it was, Dexter – having carefully negotiated 14 deliveries before lunch – deposited Patel’s third ball of the afternoon beyond the rope at wide midwicket to get off the mark and then proceeded to nullify any threat the former New Zealand spinner tried to pose.Dexter could hardly have been brimming with confidence. True, he made an unbeaten 163 against Northants in mid-May but the next seven innings yielded just 76 runs. And even before that century there had been five single figure failures in seven knocks. No matter. Despite Middlesex’s worsening league position, director of cricket Angus Fraser has urged the team not to play with fear in their hearts, and Dexter followed that advice to the letter. Using his feet to get down the pitch whenever possible and driving with both power and precision, he was primarily responsible for Patel’s first eight overs costing 47 runs. The home team had been a worrying 65 for 3 with the follow-on mark of 213 looking somewhat distant. But Rogers – never at his most commanding best but as determined as ever – and Dexter banished any worries about falling short of that figure with a stand of 127.Both should have gone on to make centuries, of course, yet neither did. Rogers went first, to a leg-side strangle, and then – having become somewhat becalmed either side of tea – Dexter gifted Recordo Gordon a second wicket by pulling a long hop straight to midwicket.Still, Robson would probably have taken either of those dismissals in place of the one that ended his first innings back with Middlesex since early June. The opener has played seven Tests for England this summer and has a century, against Sri Lanka, to his name. But he averaged under 24 against India with many a pundit suggesting he has a problem over what to play and what to leave on and around off stump.Today, as against India at Old Trafford, Robson lost his off stump after choosing not to offer a stroke – Hannon-Dalby’s delivery holding its line rather than moving away down the Lord’s slope. It did not look great, and neither did Middlesex’s position when two more wickets fell, but help was soon at hand.

Tenho a minha.

M:Não me sinto pilar da equipe.
