Belligerent McCullum century flattens Pakistan

A typically belligerent century from Brendon McCullum broke the monotony of a sombre day and helped wipe off 164 runs after Mark Craig’s seven wickets had pulled back Pakistan

Video report: McCullum hammers blistering 153*

The morning in Sharjah had been sombre. Pakistan and New Zealand observed a minute’s silence before the start of the day’s play and put their bats out as a tribute to Phillip Hughes. With no chirping from the fielders, no celebrations on the fall of wickets, and muted reactions from batsmen on being dismissed, the eerie quiet had also descended to the middle. There wasn’t much difference in the air after lunch; Pakistani fielders were similarly quiet when New Zealand came into bat and the celebrations restrained. But a typically belligerent century from Brendon McCullum, the fastest by a New Zealand batsman, broke the monotony of a flat day and helped wipe off 249 runs from Pakistan’s lead in 45 overs after Mark Craig’s career-best 7 for 94 had restricted the home team to 351.Nothing was unnatural about his couple of boundaries in the first six overs; one a flick through square leg, the other a lightning slap in front of point. Or the ones that followed in the seventh over, bowled by Zulfiqar Babar. First ball, a long-hop, was pulled powerfully over the boundary at midwicket, the second cut through point, and the fourth, and the most outrageous, a cover drive for six.As Mohammad Talha and Rahat Ali started pounding the ball halfway, something that had been missing in the morning, McCullum became even more adventurous. A short one from Talha ended in the stands at deep square leg, then one from Rahat was cut over point for six more. He reached his half-century of just 30 deliveries – the second-fastest by a New Zealand batsman – with consecutive boundaries in the 13th over.Kane Williamson found his higher gear too. He opened with a stylish drive through cover off Babar, then collected a six two overs later off the same bowler. Although McCullum’s strokeplay was at times freakish, it was Williamson who played the shot of the day – a back-foot on-drive to a legspinning delivery from Yasir Shah.Brendon McCullum’s 78-ball century was the fastest by a New Zealand batsman•Getty Images

He carried on scoring at almost run-a-ball, but McCullum’s blistering pace at the other end meant he went completely unnoticed during the partnership. The New Zealand captain was on 82 at the start of the penultimate over before tea, but smashed four boundaries off the Talha over to move to 98 before reaching his 10th Test century – in 78 deliveries – off the last ball of the session. There was no overt expression of joy, just an embrace from Williamson and off the two went back to the dressing room. There was no immediate let-off for Pakistan. McCullum smashed a six each in three of the four overs after tea, taking his tally of sixes to eight in the innings, the most by any batsman in an innings against Pakistan. New Zealand crossed 200 in the 30th over. As the shadows engulfed the stadium, McCullum slowed down a little realising New Zealand had a strong chance to extend the advantage come day three. The run rate dropped below six in the 38th over, after a gap of 20 overs. The intensity in the second session had been in contrast to the morning session. Pakistan had resumed on 281 for 3 after a day’s break, but lost their last seven wickets for 66 runs to relinquish their position of strength. Mohammad Hafeez, who was unbeaten on 178 overnight, fell three short of what would have been his maiden double-century and was the chief contributor to the total as the rest crumbled.Misbah-ul-Haq failed to add to his score from the first day, edging Tim Southee to the wicketkeeper in the fourth over of the day. The reactions summed up the mood; BJ Watling dived to his right to take a good low catch, but didn’t react. Southee showed no emotion and neither did anyone else on the field. Later, the fielders quietly converged towards Hafeez and patted his back after the batsman had pulled a long-hop from Ish Sodhi to deep square leg; it was Hafeez’s best Test score.Asad Shafiq attempted to inject some energy by skipping down the track to Vettori for a boundary early in the day, but he too fell to a soft dismissal soon after Hafeez. That wicket opened up the gates as one by one, Craig sent the batsmen back. There was only a half-hearted appeal as Sarfraz edged one to the wicketkeeper. The last four wickets could just add 15 runs as Pakistan were bowled out for much less than what they would have wanted. Then Pakistan’s bowlers failed to curtail McCullum. Babar and Yasir leaked 130 runs in 20 overs between them while Talha was taken for 62 off seven. At the end of the day and after taking the bowlers apart during an unbeaten 198-run stand with Williamson, McCullum did find a moment to smile.

IPL governing council meet on February 3

The IPL governing council will meet in Mumbai on February 3 to finalise the auction date, ahead of the 2015 edition of the league

It is understood that N Srinivasan and BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel have discussed the ramifications of the court order with the BCCI and Srinivasan’s legal team•AFP

The IPL governing council will meet in Mumbai on February 3 to finalise the auction date, ahead of the 2015 edition of the league. The meeting, which will be held after the marketing committee meet at the BCCI headquarters, will be the first official BCCI sub-committee conclave after the Supreme Court’s order pulling up the BCCI on various fronts. It is understood that the auction will have to postponed to the second half of February. Till last week, the franchises were informally told that the auction will be held between February 6 and 9, in Bangalore. However, with the court order set to have severe ramifications on the IPL and the BCCI, the auction cannot be held as per the initial plan.It is highly possible now that the auction will be held during the World Cup, something that the IPL authorities were trying their best to avoid.Meanwhile, a day after N Srinivasan – whose tenure as BCCI president seems to be all but over with the court ruling – returned to Chennai after a pilgrimage, he met with the BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel in Chennai. A Patel aide tried to play down the visit, which was always planned ahead of Patel’s departure to Dubai for Sunday’s ICC chief executives’ meeting. The two, it is understood, discussed the ramifications of the court order with the BCCI and Srinivasan’s legal team. It is also believed that they had a teleconference with select Srinivasan loyalists, to discuss the way forward.

Rahul, Karun tons flatten Tamil Nadu

Karnataka had Tamil Nadu on the mat on the second day after unbeaten centuries from KL Rahul and Karun Nair took their score to 323 for 5, the lead now 189

The Report by Amol Karhadkar in Mumbai09-Mar-2015
ScorecardKL Rahul batted through pain for 338 minutes during the course of his unbeaten hundred•PTI

With less than a month to go for the start of the IPL, technicians were testing spidercam at Wankhede Stadium on the sidelines of the second day’s play. The drone flew high, so did Karnataka’s chances of retaining the Ranji title.Centuries from Karun Nair and a hobbling KL Rahul – they added an unbroken 239-run partnership for the sixth wicket – had Tamil Nadu on the mat. With a lead of 189 runs and three days remaining, Karnataka appear well poised to defend their title. The day started on even terms, with Karnataka resuming on 45 for 4. The balance tilted in favour of Karnataka once Tamil Nadu’s pacers failed to break through nightwatchman Abhimanyu Mithun early. By the time Mithun perished in the 11th over of the day – adjudged lbw to offspinner M Rangarajan by umpire Anil Chaudhary when the ball may have gone over the bails – Tamil Nadu were playing catch up. It was also their only success of the day.Rahul came to the crease – he had retired hurt the previous evening due to hamstring strain – and appeared to have difficulty running between the wickets. He batted through the pain, Karun displayed abundant patience and the pair made a lacklustre bowling attack look worse.

KL Rahul became the seventh Karnataka player to score two centuries in Ranji Trophy finals after Brijesh Patel (3), GR Viswanath, Roger Binny, J Arunkumar, R Vijay Bharadwaj and Rahul Dravid (two each)

KL Rahul and Karun Nair’s 239-run unbroken partnership is a new record for the sixth wicket in Ranji Trophy finals. The duo bettered Ramakant Desai and GS Ramchand’s 203-run association for Mumbai against Rajasthan at Jaipur in 1962-63

Rahul and Nair will now be eyeing to raise the best sixth wicket partnership for Karnataka. The record is held by Manish Pandey and CM Gautam, who added 328 runs against Orissa at Bangalore in 2010-11

Though the pitch offered decent bounce, none of L Balaji, Prasanth Parameswaran and Aswin Crist bent their backs. Instead, they preferred to put the ball on a length and hoped for it to move in the air. Moreover, with Rahul struggling to run, the fielders barely attempted to hurry him by going for the stumps at his end.The first time a Tamil Nadu fielder tried a direct hit was 15 minutes before stumps. By then, Rahul had crossed his second hundred in as many Ranji finals and helped Karun raise his first century of the season and take the game away from Tamil Nadu. The only time Rahul ran three was to help his partner reach three-figures. Karun flicked Parameswaran through midwicket in the seventh over with the second new ball. Karun celebrated the hundred with a hat-trick of boundaries off Crist in the next over, a flick sandwiched between two cracking drives.Surprisingly, Tamil Nadu didn’t take that new ball immediately. Rahul was on 98 at the time, pulled Vijay Shankar for two he needed for his ton and then Tamil Nadu took the new ball. Though the bowling didn’t really challenge him, Rahul deserves praise for not losing concentration. He played though the pain for 338 minutes and took it up a notch by with drives, flicks, pulls and even a reverse sweep off Rangarajan to underline his thirst for runs. But the bowlers could not pose a threat to the well-set pair. Tamil Nadu’s batsmen will have to match Rahul and Karun’s efforts, if they are to avoid an outright loss, let alone coming back into the game.
