Southampton "monster" closing in on exit as "very concrete" talks emerge

A Southampton player dubbed a "monster" appears to be closing in on a move away from St Mary's Stadium this summer, according to an update from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Southampton transfer news

It is now less than a week until the Saints get their Premier League season up and running as they look to avoid a quickfire return to the Championship come next May. It has been a positive summer when it comes to new signings, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes arriving on permanent deals from Manchester City and West Ham respectively, along with the return of Adam Lallana, among other additions.

That doesn't mean that others aren't being linked with summer moves to Southampton, and they have reportedly made an effort to sign Feyenoord defender Ferdi Kadioglu. He impressed for Turkey at Euro 2024, shining from his preferred left-back role, and he could give Russell Martin quality at both ends of the pitch.

Tottenham midfielder Oliver Skipp has also been mentioned as a possible target for Saints, potentially coming in as an ideal partner for Downes in the middle of the park. The Englishman may not be viewed as a key player by Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, which could pave the way for him to seal a move to St Mary's.

Away from incomings, a summer exit now looks set to be sealed, following a key development at the south coast club.

Southampton "monster" closing in on exit

According to Plettenberg on X, Armel Bella-Kotchap is close to sealing a move from Southampton to Hoffenheim, with "very concrete" talks taking place and personal terms being no issue for the Bundesliga club:

Losing Bella-Kotchap is a blow for Southampton given the ability he has, with former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl once saying of him: "He’s a one-on-one monster. Very strong in one-on-one situations and he’s very fast. You can defend well with him. He plays good passes into the final third, even over longer distances. [But] his heading game can be improved [when attacking corners]."

In truth, it could be argued that Bella-Kotchap is destined to play at a higher level, with the 22-year-old spending last season on loan at Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven, albeit having only turned out four times for them after being struck down by injury early in the campaign.

In any case, a move back to Germany could appeal to the 2-cap international ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Instead, it is now a case of Southampton cashing in on Bella-Kotchap and using the funds on more signings ahead of the new season, giving Martin and his side the best possible chance of staying up.

Dream for Dessers: Rangers could finally replace Sima with £5m gem

Glasgow Rangers could see a few members of the first team squad depart between now and the Friday evening transfer deadline.

Ben Davies was the first to depart, joining Birmingham City on a season-long loan deal, but there will be others.

Todd Cantwell is reportedly in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a move to the Championship side before Friday, while Scott Wright is set to undergo a medical at Birmingham City as the Light Blues have accepted a bid for the winger.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

These outgoings are all fine and well as it will allow Philippe Clement to raise some funds for new signings, but he will have to act swiftly in order to replace those that are leaving.

Plenty of targets have been linked in recent months and weeks, but despite Clement’s desire to bring some high quality players to Ibrox, it hasn’t quite worked out as planned.

Phillipe Clement

Indeed, a move for former loanee Abdallah Sima was one of the sagas during the earlier weeks of the transfer window, but no permanent move ever materialised for the Senegal international.

Rangers missed out on Abdallah Sima

Despite the Gers showing interest in bringing Sima back to Ibrox this summer, this time on a permanent basis, it became clear that he wouldn’t be making a move back to Scotland.

Indeed, he ended up making a move to French side Stade Brest on yet another temporary move away from Brighton. The Ligue 1 side will be taking part in the Champions League this season, perhaps a key incentive in Sima’s decision.

The 22-year-old was one of the few bright sparks for the club last season, as he scored 16 goals in all competitions for the club, grabbing two assists in the process.

He was certainly one of the most successful loan signings the Gers have made in recent history, and it is a pity he won't be back in Scotland this year.

In the Premiership, Sima succeeded with 1.2 dribbles while averaging 2.9 shots per game, statistics which clearly showcased his ability at beating his man and displaying a keen eye for goal.

So far, Clement has yet to sign a winger who can offer what Sima did last term. Rabbi Matondo has shown flashes of brilliance, but lacks the consistency to be truly great, while Oscar Cortes has struggled with injury issues of late.

This could see the Belgian dive into the transfer market and bring in a winger before the deadline.

Rangers' dream Sima alternative

As reported earlier this week, the Light Blues are showing interest in winger Ibrahim Adel following his heroics for Egypt during the recent Olympic Games in Paris as the country reached the semifinals.

Premier League new boys Leicester City and Ipswich Town are also showing interest in the Pyramids FC gem, who could cost around £5m if he is to be lured away from North Africa.

No approach has been made as yet – and there is talk that Adel could be on his way to Spain – but hopefully this could change in the next day or two as things may get heated due to the transfer window closing on Friday evening at 11.30pm.

He certainly has plenty of ability and would be an ideal signing to replace the goals of Sima on the left wing. The question is, will a concrete move be made for the African starlet?

Ibrahim Adel’s season in numbers

The winger made 23 appearances during the 2023/24 season for his club, scoring seven times and providing two assists, with all of these goal contributions coming in the league.

Across 17 games in the Egyptian Premier League, Adel also created two big chances, averaged 1.3 key passes per game and succeeded with 1.2 dribbles per game, clearly demonstrating his attacking talents despite starting 12 league games.

These qualities would make him a solid fit in the current Gers starting XI, especially with the need for Clement to add more goals from out wide.

It was his exploits in France over the summer, however, which have certainly allowed Adel to capture the public eye.

In six matches, the winger scored three goals, created a big chance, averaged 1.7 key passes and registered an impressive 3 successful dribbles per game – a success rate of 67% – as he came so close to winning a medal, losing to Morocco in the playoff for the bronze medal.

His direct approach could also see him work wonders for Cyriel Dessers, who clearly needs someone out wide to supply him just as Sima did last term.

Why Ibrahim Adel could be a great signing for Cyriel Dessers

Dessers has certainly generated somewhat of a marmite impression on the Ibrox faithful, as half of the supporters love his work rate and attitude, while the other half think he isn’t good enough.

Five goals in six matches to open up the current campaign is just one way to silence his doubters and he could be key if this form continues.

The Nigerian international linked up well with Matondo during the 6-0 win over Ross County last weekend and if this sort of chemistry continues in the coming weeks, it could see the Light Blues carry on their momentum of late.

There is no doubt that another winger is required if Clement aims for success on all fronts this term, although it will depend on how many players leave.

Adel may cost £5m but judging by his displays for club and country over the previous 12 months, it could be a wise investment indeed.

It appears as though several players are going to be sold within the next day or two, signifying the need to bring more signings to the club.

The next 48 hours could be frantic, especially if the Belgian manages to conduct the business that he wishes to do in that time frame.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Rooney's Plymouth Argyle took the lead three times at Home Park against Middlesborough as Lewis Gibson, Darko Gyabi and Mustapha Bundu scored goals for the Pilgrims. However, Michael Carrick's side hauled themselves level on all three occasions with efforts from Jonny Howson, Hayden Hackney and Emmanuel Latte Lath, the last of whom scored in injury time. Rooney has now ripped into his players' inability to hold the lead on multiple occasions.

Speaking to , Rooney said: "It's frustrating. Reflecting on the game I thought first half we were excellent, both in possession and out of possession.

"I'm a little bit disappointed we didn't do better for two of the three goals, I think we were a bit naive."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Plymouth Argyle are stuck to the bottom of the Championship standings this season and Rooney's future at Home Park is in question. Reacting to the battle to avoid Championship relegation, Rooney added: "It's very tight down there and there's quite a few teams in what is a mini-league.

"We're bottom of the league but if we keep performing like we have been doing over the last three games I'm certain we will win games soon.

"I've no problem with that because it's a strange league but it's not where we want to be. My focus is going to be on making sure we're not in that bottom three come he end of he season and we know one game can change that."

He’d revive Sterling: Man Utd target late move for £20m-rated "weapon"

The transfer window is set to come to a dramatic close in just a matter of days, and plenty of teams are looking to conduct some last-minute business, including Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been incredibly busy this summer, bringing in many talented additions, including Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and even Manuel Ugarte, who should be announced any minute now.

However, it would appear that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co want to bring in even more new faces to help speed along their revolution, and one of the most surprising players to be touted for a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks has been Raheem Sterling.

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling.

The Chelsea ace has been frozen out of things at Stamford Bridge and could get back to his best at Old Trafford, which could happen if United also pick up the latest young star touted for a move to the club.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, United are one of several teams interested in Girona ace Miguel Gutierrez.

Girona defenderMiguel Gutierrez.

Alongside the Red Devils, the report claims that Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are all keen on the talented left-back, while Real Madrid, who own 50% of his rights, have the option to come back in for him.

A price is not mentioned in the report, but the 23-year-old is valued at €24.5m – £20m – by Football Transfers, and while the La Liga side would undoubtedly want more than that, it does suggest that a move might not completely break the bank for a big club like United.

Miguel Gutierrez for Girona against Barcelona.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Gutierrez's incredible form last season, it is one worth pursuing, especially if Sterling makes his way to United, as the young full-back could help revive the Englishman's fortunes.

Why Gutierrez could revive Sterling

Okay, so let's get straight to the point with this one. There is one reason, above all others, why Gutierrez might be able to help Sterling get back to his best at United: his attacking quality.

Yes, the five-capped Spaniard is a more than capable defender, and his ability to do so on the left would, in turn, give the Englishman more license to roam forwards, but it is his impressive level of output that would see him strike up a brilliant partnership with the former Manchester City ace.

For example, in his 40 appearances for Girona last season, the 23-year-old "weapon", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored two goals and provided nine assists, meaning that he averaged a goal involvement every 3.63 games, which is unreal for a defender.

Moreover, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the former Real ace sits in the top 6% of full-backs for expected assists, non-penalty expected goals plus assists and pass completion, the top 16% for total shots and the top 18% for actual assists, all per 90.

This helps to show that he wasn't just running hot last season, and if anything, playing in a team with more talent around him could help his numbers improve further.

Just imagine a left-hand side with the 82-capped Englishman flying down the wings to get on the end of a brilliant pass from the Girona ace; it could provide another option to Ten Hag during hard-fought encounters.

Ultimately, it could be a challenging transfer to get over the line, but if United really are going to bring Sterling in on some kind of swap deal this summer, then signing the incredibly exciting Gutierrez to help get the most out of him on the left seems like a brilliant idea.

Guardiola is navigating a challenging phase at City as his team has managed just one win in their last 13 matches across all competitions – a statistic that stands out as the worst run in Guardiola's managerial career. For a club that has lifted four consecutive Premier League trophies, this dip in form has sent shockwaves through fans.

Postdcoglou’s future at Tottenham has come under a lot of scrutiny as his gung-ho style of play has not panned out so far and the Lilywhites have suffered a number of humiliating losses. However, the Australian believes that he can turn around the north London side’s fortunes this season and go from being a ‘joke’ to ‘a genius’.

  • Getty Images Sport

    WHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Speaking to the media, Postecoglou said: "There’s always people in life [who are] looked at a bit curiously because they do things a bit differently and they’re a bit of a joke until they get it right, then all of a sudden they’re a genius. That’s probably relevant to us right now.

"The first thing you look at as a manager is, are the players still responding to this, are they looking to an alternative out there? I haven’t sensed that at al. It’s very easy to, because it’s human nature to think we need to do something different or we’re obviously undermanned, let’s change something.

"The players still want to tackle this the way that we are tackling it. But it’s up to me to guide them through that and show them all these things are temporary. If we do get through in a positive way, the bonus and the benefit for us is that it makes you stronger. Because you know whatever you face in the future, you’ve been through worse and overcome it."

Slot must unleash Liverpool’s £37m "livewire" instead of Chiesa

So far so good for Arne Slot. Liverpool have won both of their opening Premier League fixtures and have yet to concede, but a trip to Old Trafford marks one of the most significant occasions of the campaign.

Manchester United have not started the season in the finest of form but that all goes out of the window in Europe's pre-eminent derby, with the arch-rivals pitted against each other and hoping to give their season the early boost that comes from a momentous result in this particular fixture.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

With Arsenal dropping points at home against Brighton & Hove Albion, Liverpool will hope to claim an advantage and silence the Theatre of Dreams.

Liverpool team news

Liverpool were pretty quiet throughout the summer, with Federico Chiesa joining for an initial £10m fee this week in what was the only senior incoming at Anfield.

It's an exciting signing but Slot has revealed that the dynamic winger is not expected to take part, instead honing his skills throughout the looming international break.

Curtis Jones is the sole injury absence, and though Liverpool are not likely to throw Chiesa into the thick of things on the right flank, there's a certain winger who might fancy his chances…

Mohamed Salah's record vs Manchester United

Salah is a fine scorer of goals – one of the very best in Premier League history. Since signing for Liverpool from Roma in a £34m deal, he has bagged 213 across 351 appearances, winning the whole gamut and adding 90 assists.

He might now be 32 years old but the esteemed Egyptian has started life under Slot with a resounding bang, scoring and assisting against Ipswich Town on the opening game of the campaign before netting once again last weekend, at home against Brentford.

You wouldn't bet against him scoring against the Red Devils, indeed boasting the most remarkable record against today's opposition.

Chiesa might not quite be ready to be unleashed on English shores, but Salah will hold down the fort and will do so with the incredible style that has established him as one of the greatest forwards of his generation.

However, he might not actually prove to be the most important winger against Erik ten Hag's men. Indeed, Luis Diaz might just find himself proving the star performer.

Why Luis Diaz could be the difference-maker

Diaz, who signed in a £37m move from Porto, ebbed and flowed throughout the 2023/24 campaign but he was nearly always fit and raring to go. Still, 13 goals and five assists across 51 matches in all competitions left something to be desired.

His fleet-footedness and 110% work ethic make him a pillar of Liverpool's team, but if he can keep on playing like he did last weekend, against Brentford, then he could be set for his best season yet as a Redman.

The Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle handed the Colombian an 8/10 match rating for his efforts, writing: 'Hounded the Brentford defence during the opening quarter with direct running and took his goal well. Remained a danger and played ball in for the second.'

It's early days, of course, but Diaz, hailed as a "livewire" by journalist Peter Hall, is performing at a superior level to that of last season, with his combativeness and ball-carrying ability evident through his duel success and dribbling metrics.

Man United's backline was exposed last week, during their defeat against Brighton, and Diaz could inflict significant damage through such qualities.

Liverpool have stepped into a new era, but with forwards like Diaz and Salah, the club might just prevail against their biggest rivals.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Messi spent two years in French football between 2021 and 2023, after bidding farewell to Barcelona. He did not enjoy the best of times at Paris Saint-Germain, but did claim two leagues titles at Parc des Princes and scored 32 goals before heading to the United States to join Inter Miami.

Man Utd flop sold by Van Gaal is now outscoring both Rashford & Garnacho

After a bleak campaign last season that ended with a surprise triumph in the FA Cup, Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have a massive ten months ahead of them in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, while the Dutchman's side were able to win their opening game against Fulham last month, they have since lost away to Brighton & Hove Albion and, even worse than that, at home to Liverpool.

The three-time European Champions will need their attacking players like Alejandro Garnacho, who enjoyed a brilliant campaign last year, and Marcus Rashford, who wasn't quite as effective, firing on all cylinders from here on out if they are going to break back into the Champions League places come May.

Interestingly, though, a former United flop who was sold almost a decade ago actually managed to outscore both wingers last season.

Garnacho and Rashford's 23/24

Okay, so while United were rather dismal in the league overall last season, Garnacho actually enjoyed a relatively successful year for someone his age.

Man United's Alejandro Garnacho

For example, in 50 appearances, the 20-year-old winger racked up a haul of ten goals and five assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 3.33 games, which for a side with the 15th worst underlying numbers in the league, per Understat, isn't bad going.

Moreover, while he has been in the side for some time now and has therefore become a recognisable face to the fans, he is well ahead of where most attackers are at his age, as according to research by The Athletic, wide players hit their peak at around 26 years old.

Now, while the Madrid-born dynamo can look back on last season as a year of progression, unfortunately, Rashford cannot. In fact, it was undeniably a campaign in which he regressed.

In 22/23, the Manchester-born star was practically unplayable and ended the season with a ludicrous tally of 30 goals and 11 assists in 56 matches, while last year, he could only manage eight goals and six assists in 43 appearances.

This means he went from averaging a goal involvement once every 1.36 games to once every 3.07 games in the space of a year, so it's not hard to see why some fans are starting to lose their patience with him, especially as he has yet to open his account this season.

So, it would be fair to say that between Rashford and Garnacho, it was a season of mixed fortunes last year, although both were outperformed by a former United flop who left almost a decade ago.

Ángel Di María's 23/24

Yes, the player in question is none other than World Cup winner Ángel Di María, who joined Louis Van Gaal's United side for about £60m in August 2014, scored four goals and provided 11 assists in 32 games, and then left the following summer to join Paris Saint-Germain for about £44m.

Now, while the Argentine icon did put up some pretty impressive numbers for the Red Devils, he didn't quite set the world alight as many hoped.

Moreover, he later revealed that several factors, including a break-in and disagreements with Van Gaal, meant he had to leave, and considering he recently labelled the Dutchman as the "worst manager" he's ever played for, we imagine that was the main factor.

The Rosario-born dynamo spent the next seven seasons playing in Paris, where he picked up five league titles, before moving to Juventus for the 22/23 campaign, in which he managed a return of eight goals and seven assists – oh, and he also won the World Cup that December.

In the summer of 2023, he made what is likely to be his final transfer and rejoined his first club, Benfica, where he has since been tearing it up.

Last season, the "outstanding" winger, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, scored 17 goals and provided 15 assists in 48 matches, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.5 games for the Portuguese giants, thus outscoring the two United wingers.

However, the caveat here is that while Liga Nos is stronger than most people give it credit for, the level of competition is still lower than that of the Premier League, and while he's had a brilliant career since leaving Old Trafford, selling him was the right thing to do for all parties involved.

Aston Villa reporter shares new injury concern for Emery to £100k-p/w star

Aston Villa are now sweating over the fitness concern of another first-team player, according to reliable reporter Matt Maher.

Unai Emery was backed by NSWE and Monchi during the most recent transfer window after guiding Villa to a top-four Premier League finish in what was his first full season last year.

A number of signings were made, and in hindsight, it was a good job Villa were proactive in the market due to a number of injury issues they’ve had to deal with already this season.

On the pitch, Villa have won four of their opening five top-flight fixtures and got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start with a victory away to Young Boys.

They are also still in the Carabao Cup following a 2-1 win away at Wycombe Wanderers in the week, one which saw Emery hit 50 victories from 93 games.

However, despite a positive result at Adams Park, Villa seemingly have a new injury concern.

Aston Villa sweating over Diego Carlos injury

According to chief football writer for The Express & Star, Villa reporter Maher said on Thursday that the club are sweating over the fitness of key defender Diego Carlos. The Brazilian, who picks up £100,000-a-week in the Midlands, was due to be on the bench against Wycombe but pulled up in the warm-up.

Carlos complained of discomfort and Villa’s medical team are now monitoring his condition, although they are hopeful the problem isn’t too serious.

Villa are preparing to take on newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon, so Carlos could therefore be a doubt for the trip to Portman Road, with Emery’s side then facing off against Bayern Munich in the Champions League days later.

Once described as “amazing” by Emery, Carlos played the entirety of Villa’s 3-1 win over rivals Wolves on the weekend and prior to that, the second half of the Champions League victory in Switzerland.

The 31-year-old is no stranger to injuries during his career, especially at Villa after a serious Achilles issue kept him out for months during his first campaign at Villa Park.

Hopefully, this latest concern won’t keep him out for a long period of time, but the club may feel it is best to keep him out of this weekend’s fixture as Villa look to make it five wins from six.
