Rangers were beaten 1-0 at home to Celtic on Sunday afternoon and it has led to an interesting claim emerging over the future of manager Michael Beale, courtesy of journalist Jonny McFarlane.
What went wrong for Rangers against Celtic?
The Gers faced a huge Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox on Sunday, as they hosted their bitter rivals, going into the match one point behind them after three matches. A win would be a much-needed boost for Beale, following their demoralising 5-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last Wednesday, but it was clear that a loss would also be a damaging early blow in the SPL title race.
Rangers felt aggrieved when Kemar Roofe's goal was eventually disallowed by VAR in the first half, due to a foul in the lead-up to him finding the net, and from that point on, things only got worse. Kyogo Furuhashi fired home impressively just before half-time to give Celtic the lead, silencing the home fans, and despite pushing hard for an equaliser, Beale's men couldn't find one in the end.
It means that the Gers are now four points adrift of their adversaries, and while it is still clearly early days in the new season, it is already a deficit that is not going to be easy to claw back.
The result has further heaped the pressure on Beale, who appears to be on thin ice currently, not least because of the grim way his side exited the Champions League last week.
Rangers manager Michael Beale.
Is Michael Beale's job under threat?
Taking to Twitter after the defeat to Celtic, McFarlane was critical of the job Beale is doing, claiming he now has "major problems" as he looks to keep his job:
"Michael Beale has major problems. Hard to see the identity. A performance littered with mistakes. Toothless in the top end of the pitch and prone to errors at the back isn’t a great combination."
There is no question that Beale now has to be under huge pressure to stay in the Ibrox hot seat, following a terrible few days for him, both in Europe and domestically.
For too much of the game against Celtic, there was a lack of quality and genuine guile on show, with good chances few and far between, having only three shots on target. Granted, the Hoops' defence was opened up on occasions, but it always felt as though the visitors had more cutting edge in the final third, and they could easily have scored a second goal as the minutes ticked by after the break.
Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…
With the international break now arriving, those high up at Rangers now have a key period in which to make a big decision over Beale's future, with some supporters certainly keen on the idea of him being relieved of his duties, despite only taking charge last November.
There isn't enough patience in the modern game, so sacking Beale could still feel knee-jerk, despite the losses to PSV and Celtic, but if he is retained, performances and results have to improve drastically as soon as Rangers return to action, starting away to St Johnstone on September 16th.
Sheffield United resume their Premier League return by hosting Champions League side Newcastle United at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon. And Football FanCast has everything you need to know about the fixture as the two teams prepare to meet in the Premier League.
Both sides now have five games under their belt in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign as the table begins to take some shape after a hectic opening month of the new season.
And both clubs will feel it has not been the easiest of starts to the league campaign with Sheffield United having only racked up a single point thus far and Newcastle tallying six points to their name.
This Sunday's meeting in South Yorkshire will provide both clubs an opportunity to truly get their season up and running, but how does the history book reflect on this fixture from years gone by?
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What's their head-to-head record?
Miguel Almiron – Newcastle united vs Sheffield United
Meetings between these two clubs go all the way back to the 1893/94 campaign when they met in the FA Cup. And it was the Toon who came out on top in the fixture with a 2-0 win to see them through to the second round.
Over the years, these two sides have met 127 times across all competitions with the large majority (96) of those games coming in the English top flight.
Across the 127 meetings, the points have been shared out fairly evenly over their history, but it is the Blades who have edged it with 50 wins to Newcastle's 48. For those counting, that leaves 29 draws between these two sides.

Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What's their record at Sheffield United?
Home advantage is a term which is passed about in football and in the case of Sheffield United, in this fixture, it certainly seems to be real.
Indeed, playing at Bramall Lane, the Blades have held a real advantage against the Tyneside club having won 37 of their 62 clashes.
The Blades have also been able to hold Newcastle to a draw on 15 occasions which means the Magpies have only been able to leave South Yorkshire with a victory in 10 of their 62 visits.

However, the same can also be said for the Magpies when they are playing against the Blades on home soil.
It is a very similar story on Tyneside with Newcastle holding the advantage having also won 37 times against the Blades.
The pair have faced it off 64 times at St. James' Park across all competitions, and the Blades have only been able to make the journey back down to South Yorkshire on 13 occasions – leaving 14 draws between them on Tyneside.

Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What's their Premier League record?
Sheffield-united-premier-league
The majority of the meetings between these two sides have come in the English top flight with 96 games in the history books.
Across those 96 games, there has not been a whole lot to separate these two sides with the Blades holding a narrow advantage with three more victories (38) than Newcastle over the years (35).
There have also been 23 draws between these two sides with the first meeting in the top flight coming all the way back in the 1898/99 campaign which saw the two share the points in a 2-2 draw.
However, it is worth mentioning there have only been eight meetings between the two in the Premier League – as we know it today. Indeed, since 1992, these sides have met eight times in which the Toon have edged with five wins to Sheffield United's three – with no draws being held.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: Which team has the most goals?
Newcastle-united-premier-league-Sheffield-united
There has not been much between these two sides over their history and that can be seen through the number of goals scored by each side in their meetings.
Sheffield United have edged the results with slightly more wins than the Toon in this fixture, however, it is the Magpies who have scored the most goals over the years.
Indeed, the Blades have been able to find the back of the net 177 times over the course of the 127 games played out between the two sides. But, it is Newcastle who have scored the most with a slightly higher return with 188 goals.
This means, in total, there have been 365 goals scored by these sides in their 127 meetings which is a return of just under three goals per game.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What happened in last season's fixtures?Given the Blades earned promotion back to the Premier League last season, there was no meeting between the two sides.
However, you do not have to go too far back to find their last clashes with the pair meeting back in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign. The last time these two sides battled it out, Newcastle were able to seal the points in a narrow 1-0 victory at St. James' Park.
Indeed, it was Joe Willock's goal which proved the difference between the two sides. But in their earlier meeting at Bramall Lane, it was the Blades who were able to secure the points – also in a 1-0 victory – through a Billy Sharp penalty in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What is Callum Wilson's record?
Callum-Wilson-Bournemouth-premier-league
Callum Wilson has played against the Blades five times over his career; in which the 31-year-old has only been on the winning side on one occasion.
However, it is worth mentioning only one of those five games has come whilst wearing the black and white shirt of Newcastle. Indeed, he missed one of their meetings in the 2020/21 campaign through injury and played his other four games during his time at Bournemouth and Coventry City.
During those games for Coventry and for the Cherries, Wilson has been able to find the back of the net, but his only appearance for the Magpies ended in defeat.
The Englishman has made an impressive start to the campaign with three goals in his first five games, however, he will be hoping to find himself on the winning side for what would be just the second time against the Blades.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What is Sheffield United's biggest win?
Sheffield-united-Newcastle-premier-league
The Blades hold the most victories out of the two sides in this fixture and over the course of their history, they have also notched up some impressive wins.
Indeed, the Blades have won on multiple occasions by a four-goal margin with a 5-1 victory back in the 1935/36 campaign one of their most notable results. Alongside that is a 6-2 victory over the Toon coming in the 1954/55 campaign.
However, their 5-0 win over Newcastle in the 1913/14 FA Cup was the Blades' biggest win with a five-goal margin as they advanced through to the second round of the game's oldest cup competition.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What is Newcastle's biggest win?
Similarly to the Blades, the Magpies have also enjoyed some considerable victories in this fixture. It was only three years ago since the Magpies enjoyed an emphatic 3-0 win over Shefffield United in the Premier League with goals from Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Ritchie and Joelinton sealing the points.
But this was not their biggest win. In fact, the Magpies have won by significant margins on multiple occasions, however, their biggest win against the Blades came all the way back in the 1937/38 campaign when both sides were playing the Second Division. The Toon ran out 6-0 victors in front of their own fans.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: What are the recent results?
Allan-saint-maximin-Newcastle-Sheffield-united
As a result of the Blades playing a lot of their recent football in the Championship, the last five league meetings between these sides is spread out over the last 16 years.
Indeed, four of the last five meetings have come in the last four years with the Blades playing in the Premier League over the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns.
In that time, the Toon were able to seal the points in three of the four meetings in which the Blades were not even able to find the back of the net. However, there has been one victory for Sheffield United in their recent meetings and you only have to go back to 2020 for that when they were able to take the points in a narrow 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United vs Newcastle: When is it?
The Magpies will make the journey to South Yorkshire on Sunday for the late kick-off (16:30 BST) of the weekend. Newcastle come into the game having played on Tuesday evening in their return to the Champions League away to AC Milan.
Paul Heckingbottom's men may have a bitter taste still left in their mouths after three points were snatched away from them in the dying minutes of injury time on the weekend following two late goals from Tottenham Hotspur.
It is a game which both sides will surely be eyeing up as a huge opportunity to get three points on the board and truly kickstart their campaign after turbulent starts.
India captain Virat Kohli has welcomed the short break from cricket that he is on currently, saying it has helped him recover from a “few niggles”. Kohli opted out of the ongoing Nidahas Trophy, the T20 triangular series also featuring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, with Rohit Sharma captaining the Indian team instead.”Physically, I had a few niggles, I am just getting over those,” Kohli said at a promotional event in Mumbai. “The workload has started to disagree with me a little bit. I have to be very careful about how I go forward with my body, my mind, my cricket. Times like these are very, very important. I am totally enjoying it; I do not even have an inch of me missing out on anything because my body really needed this.”Kohli was rested for the tri-series on the back of an almost two-month-long South African tour, where he played every match barring one T20I. The Indian contingent for the Nidahas Trophy excluded several notable limited-overs regulars, including Kohli, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav, with MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, explaining that the selection committee was mindful of their workload and upcoming schedule. This is not the first time that Kohli has raised concerns about workload management. He had been pretty vociferous about it during the home Test series against Sri Lanka last year. “Definitely, I do need a rest. Why not? When I think of the time when my body needs to be rested, I’ll ask for it. I am not a robot, you can slice my skin and check, I bleed,” he had said then. He was subsequently rested for the limited-overs leg of the tour.India’s players have a long season ahead of them. After the tri-series in Sri Lanka, they will be engaged in the IPL through April and May, then host Afghanistan for a one-off Test in June, before heading England for three T20Is, three ODIs and five Tests starting in July and running through to September.
The opener’s 14-ball half-century led Kings XI Punjab to a six-wicket win in Mohali
The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan08-Apr-20182:27
Agarkar: Rahul has the game to adapt to all formats
KL Rahul blasted the IPL’s fastest half-century to give Kings XI Punjab a rousing start to their 2018 IPL campaign. Rahul razed the Daredevils attack in a brutal performance, getting to the landmark inside three overs and off just 14 balls.Incongruously, though, Kings XI ended up huffing and puffing to their target of 167. After Rahul’s dismissal, Kings XI only managed 103 runs in 84 balls. But such had been the damage inflicted by Rahul that they still ended up winning with seven balls to spare. All that after Gautam Gambhir, the Daredevils captain, celebrated his return to his hometown franchise with a fighting half-century. But Kings XI’s spin duo of R Ashwin and the 17-year old debutant Mujeeb Ur Rahman led a strong bowling performance to restrict Daredevils to a total that was just about par.Mujeeb’s instant rewardAt 17 years and 11 days, Mujeeb became the IPL’s youngest-ever player. Mujeeb has all the qualities that underline an effective limited-overs spinner: his variations keep the batsmen guessing, he can be deceptive with his trajectory, and his unusual action makes it difficult to pick him out of the hand.Colin Munro tends to struggle against spin in the Powerplay: he has fallen to them four times in 17 innings during this phase in T20s. After opening with himself, Ashwin introduced Mujeeb in the third over. Munro took zero time to try and suss out the newcomer, getting down for a switch hit to the first ball he faced from him. Mujeeb’s drift from around the stumps got Munro into a tangle, and trapped him plumb in front. Daredevils were 12 for 1 in the third over.1:47
Coach’s Diary: Kings XI need not worry about Yuvraj
Gambhir’s counter-offensiveUntil Sunday, Gambhir had faced 42 balls from Axar Patel in all T20s. His numbers against him: 36 runs at 5.14 an over. And that included just two fours. On Sunday, he doubled the tally off the first two balls he faced from the left-arm spinner, first with a flowing inside-out drive through cover, and then with a crunching sweep. He followed that up with a superbly timed chip over long-off.A typically fluent Gambhir against spin was on display. He made brilliant use of his feet and especially favoured the inside-out shot to counter the drift. In his first match back with his hometown franchise, Gambhir notched up a half-century – the 36th of his IPL career – and kept Daredevils on course for a strong total.Walking the talkAshwin followed up on his pre-season declaration of trying to be as unpredictable as possible, both with his own bowling and the manner in which he rotated his other bowlers. He began by using five different bowlers inside the Powerplay.Kings XI stacked their attack with three spinners, and each of them contributed to pulling the team back. Axar removed Shreyas Iyer to end a 42-run second-wicket stand – the best of Daredevils’ innings. Rishabh Pant’s cameo briefly swung the momentum back, before Mujeeb had him with a googly, thanks to a brilliant catch by Andrew Tye, running backwards from extra cover. Mujeeb then nailed a direct hit to account for Gambhir, run out for the 16th time – an IPL record.Ashwin tantalised with offbreaks, legbreaks, carrom balls and flippers: all of them delivered with superb control. He had Rahul Tewatia lbw on an attempted switch hit, and it looked as though Daredevils would have to settle for a below-par total. But Daredevils still had Chris Morris, a man with a smart strike rate of 241 at the death. Since the 2015 IPL, he has also been striking at 157 in the first 10 balls he faces. His unbeaten 16-ball 27, after coming in at the start of the 16th over, was just what Daredevils needed at the finish.Rampaging Rahul seals the dealThe skiddy nature of this Mohali surface meant the odd ball could keep low, and lbw was always a looming threat. The key was to stick to a fullish length and a stump-to-stump line, and you were in with a chance to pick up quick wickets.Rahul, however, came out swinging, and a wayward Daredevils attack fed him by bowling all over the place. One bowler after the other was left stunned by the ease with which Rahul played off either foot. Bowl it full, and he’d meet them with a solid stride and drive imperiously; drop it short, and he’d shift back with ease and hack them through the leg side. Each delivery was a gift that came tied with a ribbon. After Rahul fell, hometown hero Yuvraj Singh scratched and struggled, Karun Nair struck a fifty that largely went unnoticed despite coming at a strike rate of 151.51, and David Miller and Marcus Stoinis coasted to the target with an unbroken stand of 29.
Newcastle United could make more signings in the January transfer window, and they are believed to be eyeing a move for a talented Premier League player, according to a new report.
Will Newcastle make signings in January?
The Magpies made a welcome return to winning ways in the league on Saturday evening, battling their way to a 1-0 win at home to Brentford. The match was settled by a Callum Willson penalty, and the hope is that they now continue to climb their way up the table after a poor start to the campaign.
It was an impressive summer in the transfer market for Newcastle, with a number of top players making the move to St James' Park, including Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes from AC Milan and Leicester City respectively.
With the Magpies now a financial powerhouse, however, the funds will be available to again spend money once the January transfer window rolls around, should Eddie Howe want to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the season, enhancing their hopes of securing back-to-back top four finishes.
Now, a new update has emerged regarding Newcastle's pursuit of one player, in what has the potential to be an exciting piece of business if it goes through.
Will Newcastle sign Lucas Paqueta?
According to a report from Spain [via The Daily Mail], the Magpies have identified West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta as a January target, seeing him as someone who could make a further difference in the middle of the park.
The fact that the Brazilian is currently being investigated over betting on football matches doesn't appear to have put Newcastle off – he denies any wrongdoing over the allegations – and they see him as an individual who is ideal for Howe's team.
Paqueta could be a fantastic signing if a move materialises in the coming months, having started this season in superb form for West Ham, catching the eye with his quality on the ball and work ethic out of possession.
The 26-year-old has averaged 4.2 tackles per game in the Premier League in 2023/24 to date, which is comfortably more than any other Hammers player, but he has also chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece.
Paqueta is now a 42-time capped Brazil international, which further highlights his pedigree, and has scored nine times for his country, including finding the net at the 2022 World Cup. He has been described as "absolutely incredible" by former West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, which says a lot about his ability, and he really could be exactly what Newcastle are after.
The aforementioned betting allegations are clearly a potential drawback, should he be found guilty – Manchester City have also been linked with a move – but assuming that issue blows over, the Magpies should do all they can to make the Brazilian part of their squad moving forward.
Few players are both a joy to watch and endlessly hard-working for the good of the team, but Paqueta ticks both of those boxes and is a wonderful footballer heading into the peak years of his career.

South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel will retire from international cricket at the end of the Australia Test series
ESPNcricinfo staff26-Feb-20181:55
‘I leave with a very happy heart’
South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel has announced he will retire from international cricket at the end of the Australia Test series. South Africa will host Australia for four Tests starting March 1 in Durban.”It was an extremely tough decision but I feel the time is right to start a new chapter,” Morkel said. “I have a young family and a foreign wife, and the current demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain us. I have to put them first and this decision will only benefit us going forward.”I have loved every minute that I have played in the Proteas jersey, and I am incredibly grateful to my team mates, Cricket South Africa, and my family and friends for the support over the years. I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in me and I am excited for what lies ahead. For now, all of my energy and focus is on helping the Proteas win the upcoming series against Australia.”When South Africa were in England last year, Morkel was pursued by at least three counties as a Kolpak signing for the 2018 season. The 33-year-old was linked to a Kolpak deal most recently during the India Test series. Indian media reported that Morkel’s father said his son needed to “secure his future” and was considering the Kolpak option but Morkel strongly denied that he was nearing retirement. “There’s still plenty of goals I want to achieve. There’s no truth to that,” he said on January 15, during the Test at SuperSport Park.He will now end his international career when the fourth Test ends on April 3 in Johannesburg. Provided he plays all four matches, Morkel will finish with 87 Tests and will add to his current tally of 294 Test wickets – fifth overall for South Africa.Since making his Test debut in 2006, Morkel has been a vital part of South Africa’s most potent pace attack along with Dale Steyn, especially after Makhaya Ntini’s last Test in 2009. More recently, he led their pace attack in late 2015 in India when South Africa were without Steyn and Vernon Philander.BCCI
Morkel suffered a career-threatening back injury in 2016, which kept him out of action for most of the year. He missed series against New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka and only returned to the team in March 2017, in New Zealand but appeared a much improved bowler. While Morkel always had the skill of extracting bounce, on his comeback he had also developed the ability to pitch the ball up more. His consistency and menace only grew and he was South Africa’s leading wicket-taker on their tour to England in 2017.Limited-overs formats took a backseat as Morkel’s career went on. He faded into and out of the South Africa limited-overs side after finishing as their top wicket-taker in the 2015 World Cup. He was not named in the 2016 World T20 squad, did not play in the 2017 IPL as he sought to find form ahead of a demanding international season, and was unsold in this year’s auction. His involvement in the 2019 World Cup was also unclear. At the start of the summer, Morkel said he needed to discuss with new coach Ottis Gibson about whether he would feature in the white-ball set-up before deciding on his future. In the weeks that followed, Gibson said he had spoken to Morkel and explained that, like every other player, he would be considered if he performed well. Morkel played in five of the six ODIs against India and appeared to be among South Africa’s candidates for the 2019 World Cup until his retirement announcement on Monday. He will end his ODI career with 188 wickets from 117 matches at an average of 25.32 with two five-fors. In T20 internationals – which he last played in Lahore for the World XI side – he collected 47 wickets from 44 matches at an economy rate of 7.50.He ranked in the ICC’s top 10 bowlers in all formats at some stage of his career and was No. 1 in ODIs for a period in 2011.Should Morkel decide to go Kolpak – Yorkshire and Surrey are believed to be interested in signing him – he would become the latest in a line of South Africans to quit international cricket and take up a county contract. A year ago, Kyle Abbott’s departure for Hampshire sent shockwaves through the game in South Africa, with internationals such as Rilee Rossouw, Simon Harmer and Stiaan van Zyl also among those moving to the UK.
Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed their first three points of the season in match week three of the Premier League, after what was a treacherous summer for the Old Gold.
From being restricted of funds due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) pressures, to being left without a manager just five days before the 2023/24 campaign commenced, the outlook for Wolves’ season ahead looked bleak before the off.
Gary O’Neil was hired as a quick resolution in the coaching department, as well as the sale of Matheus Nunes aiding the club in bringing in much-needed reinforcements after months of tight finances, turning the direction from the doom and gloom of the past to the positives of the future.
One issue that remains is the squad’s difficulty in scoring goals, which was speculated to have been an area eyed to bolster on deadline day, however, the window closed without a striker identified.
Who did Wolves want to sign this summer?
The narrative of Che Adams’ future was of interest to Molineux on the final day of the transfer window, as the Southampton striker was speculated to make the move to the Midlands.
It was later revealed that any potential deal was off, according to Express and Star, leaving O’Neil short in the strike department as expected this season.
Earlier in the summer, fans were left dreaming as links to former Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres circled, however, the Sweden international made the move to Sporting Lisbon in a deal rumoured to be worth around £18.5m.
There’s no doubt that Wolves would have been attracted to the services of Gyokeres, who netted 22 goals and registered 12 assists in all competitions for the Sky Blues last term.
After ending the 2022/23 season as the Premier League’s lowest-scorers, it was imperative that a reliable forward was recruited to break the chain, however, things never looked likely as the details of the club’s financial turmoil unravelled.
One positive from the lows of the FFP worries was that Fabio Silva remained at the club, after returning from a season of two loan experiences at both Anderlecht and PSV.
Wolves striker Fabio Silva.
The 21-year-old made a strong impact away from Molineux, scoring seven goals in the Belgian Pro League in his first loan spell, followed by netting four Eredivisie goals for PSV before his return.
While his talent is unquestionable, the youngster's development is a process with his skills still raw and maturing to the demands of the Premier League, leaving question marks over whether he could be the man to solve such woes in the final third.
Indeed, when it comes to his action for the Old Gold, Silva has only found the net on five occasions in 67 outings.
Gyokeres, therefore, could have been the perfect inclusion for the Old Gold, as highlighted by his fast start in Portugal, where he scored a brace on his debut in Liga Portugal for Sporting.
Previously lauded as “one of a kind” by former manager Mark Robins, the 25-year-old has the feel of a prolific forward and one that could have been a reliable figure at Molineux to bolster their outlook in front of goal.
