Josh Philippe leaves the nerves behind in Big Bash final heroics

He showed a new level of maturity, typified by his innings in the final when, despite the pressure of the occasion, he did not throw his wicket away

Andrew McGlashan09-Feb-2020Josh Philippe recalled the feeling of being “terrified” on his Big Bash debut two years ago, as he was named Player of the Match after producing the dominant innings of the 2020 final to lead the Sydney Sixers to the title.Philippe hit 52 off 29 balls in a game that was reduced to 12 overs per side – few expected a match to even be possible – which ensured the Sixers overcame a mid-innings stutter to post a total that proved well out of reach for the Melbourne Stars after their top order folded. It capped a golden finish to the tournament for Philippe who made three half-centuries in his last four innings, lifting his overall tally to 487 runs, after a period mid-tournament where he hit a lean patch.Philippe started his BBL career with the Perth Scorchers – he plays state cricket for Western Australia – and his debut was against the Sydney Sixers in 2017 before he was lured east to join the club with Steven Smith playing a significant part in the move.He began in the middle order before shifting up midway through last season and this year has shown a new level of maturity to his game, typified by his innings in the final when, despite the pressure of the occasion, the reduced overs and not getting a huge amount of strike, he did not throw his wicket away.”When I played my first Big Bash game I was terrified, so I definitely think after getting a few games under your belt you get used to a lot of the external pressure and noise that you don’t really get playing state cricket,” he said. “When there’s twenty or thirty thousand people compared to a hundred it’s a different feel. It’s definitely something I’ve worked on and comes with playing a lot of games.”I’ve had a few games this year where I haven’t [seen it through], I’ve got out and it’s really cost us. A few of them stuck in the back of my mind. I just knew if I was out there towards the back end, it’s funny it somehow gets easier, you might nick a four, and you get away and it’s a different game so I just try to take it as deep as I can.”Philippe said that the thought the game could be abandoned without any play – which would have given the Sixers the title as hosts of the final – perhaps helped reduce any pre-match nerves but he still surprised himself by how calm he remained.”I guess looking at the forecast it continued to get worse, we almost thought we probably weren’t going to get on at all. That’s not how we wanted to do it, we really wanted to play in front of our home crowd. When you aren’t expecting to play you don’t get especially nervous, I was actually incredibly calm last night and all day today. When we started I still remained calm which surprised me a bit.”The Sydney Sixers players soak in the win•Getty ImagesPhilippe’s growth this season was lauded by his BBL captain Moises Henriques as he showed the range of gears he has as a batsman.”What he has done this year, we’ve seen him bat in many different modes throughout the season,” he said. “We all know he can whack it everywhere around the park but you can’t score as many runs as he did throughout the season without composure and making the right decisions at the right times. Not only just whacking it around the park but knowing how to build an innings and get through some tough times through the 20-over period.”A season like Philippe has had in the BBL will continue the push for what feels like an inevitable Australia call-up before too long, although whether he can force himself into the planning for the T20 World Cup in October remains to be seen. He has a deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL which, if he isn’t sat on the bench, could be another important learning experience particularly in his development against spin.”The destiny is there – it is in his hands,” Henriques said. “He has definitely got the talent to go on but it is up to him. As I’ve said about the weather, you can’t predict the future. You don’t want to put any more pressure on young men than what they already put on themselves. He is just a great kid with a great head on his shoulders. If he keeps doing the right things, who knows what will happen.”For the player himself, he was just thinking about more short-term practicalities. He was due to fly back to Perth on Sunday afternoon before jumping on another flight on Tuesday as part of Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield squad with the competition resuming on Friday.”My game’s developed so much over the last year and I think I’m really learning how to handle myself in pressure situations,” he said. “You never know until you get the opportunity. I’m just going to try and get as many runs as I can and see what happens.”

Farke provides likely return date of "lively" star who missed Watford game

After watching his Leeds United salvage a late draw against Watford to stay within touching distance of new Championship leaders Ipswich Town, Daniel Farke provided a crucial injury update on three players.

Leeds injury news

Now into the final stage of the Championship season, every moment counts as Leeds will likely find out after their 2-2 draw against Watford. The Whites had the chance to take advantage of Leicester City's earlier loss against Bristol City, but were left kicking themselves after a frustrating game against the Hornets. Now, with seven games to go, the West Yorkshire club sit second, one point behind Ipswich and one ahead of Leicester City, who have a game in hand.

The Yorkshire club could try to hijack the move…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 28, 2024

What won't help Leeds' pursuit of promotion is their growing injury concerns. Farke was forced to cope without Ilia Gruev, Pascal Struijk, Stuart Dallas and Wilfried Gnonto against Watford, which showed at times. Gnonto has been in particularly good form in the second half of the campaign, finally finding his best form in a Leeds shirt again.

The news doesn't get any better for Leeds fans either following Farke's post-game update that Gnonto is set to miss the next three weeks of action. The German said (via the Yorkshire Evening Post): "Willy Gnonto, the first diagnosis was at least three weeks out. A muscle injury, hamstring strain.

"I have trust in him because he is always professional in his rehab and also I have big belief and hope in our physios and our doctors, they are doing an excellent job.

Wilfried Gnonto

"Perhaps there is a chance to bring him in slightly earlier but if I have to give you a realistic timeframe, realistically from the scan it says about three weeks, perhaps even a few days more, and more or less the same for Connor Roberts, also three weeks. We hope to bring them perhaps back even a bit earlier because we have a crazy schedule also in the upcoming weeks, but we have to wait."

Games that Gnonto will miss

At the most crucial stage of the season, Gnonto is on course to miss at least four of Leeds' final seven games in a major blow for Farke and potentially his side's title hopes. The Leeds boss will simply hope to see the Italian make a far quicker recovery to fight back to full fitness before the end of the campaign arrives.

Those at the club will be well aware of the quality that they'll now be without until at least mid-April, with Joe Gelhardt saying via BBC Radio Leeds when asked to describe the Italian when he first joined: "Very sharp, very fast. He’s lively. He’ll play anywhere across the front four. He’s a lovely lad and I’m sure he’ll do very well for us.”

Update from "internal" source on rumoured Arsenal bid for Santiago Gimenez

A fresh update has emerged from the camp of Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez after reports that Arsenal had bid for his services over the weekend.

Arsenal back on track against Wolves

After a pair of damaging results saw Arsenal lose control of the Premier League title race and drop out of Europe at the quarter-final stages, Mikel Arteta's side got back to winning ways courtesy of a 2-0 win over Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

It is a result that lifts them back to the top of the Premier League as things stand, with Liverpool behind them on goal difference and Manchester City trailing by a point but with a game in hand on both clubs.

Arsenal could fetch a £173m fee by selling their "monster" talent

The Gunners face Chelsea next at the Emirates Stadium before a trip across north London to take on Tottenham over the weekend, with the Gunners likely needing to take three points from both London derbies to still be in consideration for the title come the end of the weekend.

There are still areas of improvement needed though, with Arteta's side clearly still lacking a spark in central midfield and also a reliable goalscoring striker. As it stands, only Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard have reached double figures this season for goals, with no one breaching the 20 goal mark yet.

Despite being the highest scorers in the competition, there is a feeling that Arsenal need more, and they have been credited with an interest in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The Mexican has enjoyed a fine campaign to date, scoring 24 times and grabbing 7 assists in 40 outings for his side in all competitions. On Friday, it was reported that Arsenal were one of many sides pushing to sign the 23-year-old, and there were even rumours that Arsenal had made a bid for his services.

Gimenez to Arsenal update

Now, a fresh update has emerged on the status of Arsenal's interest in the £29k-a-week Gimenez, and it appears to be just that for now. As per Mexican outlet Azteca Deportes [Via Sport Witness], an "internal Feyenoord source" has relayed to them that no bid has been forthcoming from any party, with the Gunners part of a trio of sides keen on signing Gimenez.

Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also keeping a close eye, but again have not made an offer and there has been "no formal approach" for the striker from any of the three clubs in question.

It remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal's interest firms up into something more serious in the coming weeks and months, but he would certainly solve a problem the Gunners seem to have in central areas, and is reportedly available at a bargain price of just £40m this summer, which would allow plenty of scope to rebuild the squad elsewhere too.

Potential twist as Barisic’s Rangers exit now far from certain

A potential twist has emerged regarding the future of an "outstanding" Rangers player at the end of the season, following a fresh update from abroad.

Key Rangers players could leave

Philippe Clement will understandably be eyeing up a number of signings in the summer transfer window, but on the flip-side, plenty of current Ibrox heroes have been linked with moves away from the club.

One individual who looks likely to depart in the summer is left-back Borna Barisic, with the veteran defender out of contract once the campaign ends and an extension not expected to come his way.

Meanwhile, James Tavernier, one of Rangers' most important and influential players for many years, is another who has been backed to enjoy a new challenge, with a move to Saudi Arabia mooted. He could link up with former Gers manager Steven Gerrard there, although the Scottish Premiership giants are understandably desperate to retain his services.

Elsewhere, there is no guarantee that loan pairing Abdallah Sima and Fabio Silva will sign permanent deals, with much depending on potential Champions League qualification and whether the club can afford both players. Their respective clubs, Brighton and Wolves, do seem to be open to the idea of selling them, though.

Twist over "outstanding" Rangers hero's future

According to Turkish outlet Sporx [via Rangers News], Barisic is far from certain to join Trabzonspor this summer, with a deal a long way from being a foregone conclusion.

The Turkish giants are targeting various signings all over the pitch, with Sporx's update saying they want to recruit two more centre-backs, 2-3 midfielders, as well as in winger and forward positions. However, the number of foreign players allowed in their squad will drop to 12 next season, meaning they have to be more careful about the signings they bring in.

Borna Barisic

It does still feel highly likely that Barisic's future lies beyond Rangers, even though the idea of him staying put for another year or two certainly wouldn't be a bad thing given his vast experience and quality. He has been hailed by Gerrard in the past, with the Englishman saying: "Borna was outstanding last night, he is the Croatian left-back and he is used to these high-pressure games. He is very highly respected by the staff and in the dressing room."

Given Barisic's age, though, it makes more sense to simply allow him to move on, with the focus then turning to bringing in a younger replacement, such as Fluminense left-back Jefte. He was strongly linked with a switch to the Gers during the January transfer window, and although a transfer didn't materialise, a report has claimed that a verbal agreement could be in place ahead of the summer.

Should Barisic leave Rangers, as is still expected despite the possible Trabzonspor twist, he should be remembered as a consistent and effective servant, winning one Scottish Premiership title, a Scottish Cup and a Scottish League Cup, as well as registering a total of 54 assists in 230 appearances, prior to this weekend's clash with Hibernian.

St Lucia Zouks sold to Kings XI Punjab owners

KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited, the consortium that owns Kings XI Punjab, has purchased the Caribbean Premier League team St Lucia Zouks. They become the second set of IPL owners to currently run a CPL team, alongside Red Chillies Entertainment, who own both Kolkata Knight Riders and Trinbago Knight Riders. Previously, Vijay Mallya owned both Royal Challengers Bangalore and Barbados Tridents.Mohit Burman, one of the Zouks’ new co-owners, said: “We are excited at the opportunity to invest in one of the most exciting sporting tournaments in the world, and we have been impressed by the vibrancy of CPL over the last seven years.”We visualise taking the franchise to the next level and showcasing St Lucia in the best possible light over the coming years.”St Lucia Zouks, under their current guise, were a late replacement in last year’s CPL, after the axing of St Lucia Stars shortly before the tournament. CPL Limited terminated the Stars’ participation agreement on August 7, 2019 – just under a month before the team’s first scheduled game – and replaced them with the Zouks, as the team had initially been known before their purchase by Royal Sports Club, LLC in 2016.Last season, the Zouks finished fifth out of six under Darren Sammy’s captaincy, with three wins and six defeats. This year’s competition will begin on August 19, with the final scheduled for September 26.

Dest shares target return date from ACL tearDefender "excited" for reported Pochettino hire23-year-old out for calendar yearWHAT HAPPENED?

On April 20, Sergino Dest suffered an ACL tear while partaking in a training session with PSV. The injury ruled him out of Copa America 2024, and sidelined him for the remainder of the calendar year.

The U.S. international is in recovery, and has now set a target date for a return to the Dutch club, while also delivering a unique and insightful perspective on the reported hire of ex-Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino as manager of the USMNT.

Speaking to ESPN, the 23-year-old fullback shared that he's targeting a return to competition in January 2025.

"I set in my mind end of January, but I have to see how it goes, step by step," Dest said. "So if it goes worse or whatever, for any reason, I have to wait. The thing that I have to make sure is that my knee is perfect and then I can play. So if I need a little bit longer, I will take it because this is a really big injury."

He last featured on the international stage with the U.S. in their March camp, as the USMNT defeated Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League final under then-manager Gregg Berhalter. After missing out on Copa America over the summer, Dest is hoping to still be present in camps come this fall as the new regime gets into motion.

"I haven't been with the team in the last camp because obviously I'm injured so I have nothing to do there, but I will go probably in the near future, in October camp or November," he said. "I try to be with the team and will ask them to stay there with the chemistry and everything, to support them."

Like fellow internationals Antonee Robinson and Yunus Musah, Dest is excited by the expected appointment of Pochettino.

WHAT DEST SAID ABOUT POCHETTINO

"Yeah, it is [exciting]," Dest said of the possibility of playing under Pochettino. "Obviously, he's been a coach for big clubs and he's a well-known coach. That will be a nice experience to train under him.

"That's exciting. We'll see and hopefully it can help all of us … to have a really great result at the 2026 World Cup, you know? Because we are the home country. We need to take it step by step because he is not there yet."

Afif Hossain and Mohammad Naim break into Bangladesh ODI squad

Afif Hossain and Mohammad Naim have been included in the Bangladesh ODI side for the first time as they take on Zimbabwe in a three-match series next week.

OUT: Soumya Sarkar, Mosaddek Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Anamul Haque, Farhad Reza, Taskin Ahmed

Afif and Naim are two of several changes that Bangladesh are looking into as they prepare to play 50-over cricket for the first time since July last year. Mashrafe Mortaza, who according to the BCB chief Nazmul Hassan will be playing his last series as captain, is back and so are Najmul Hossain Shanto, Liton Das, Al-Amin Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin and Shafiul Islam. This squad has been picked only for the first two matches of the series. It had no place for Mosaddek Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Anamul Haque, Farhad Reza and Taskin Ahmed, while Soumya Sarkar is said to be taking a break for personal reasons.Mosaddek is injured but the others haven’t been in Bangladesh’s plans for some time now. Taskin is in the Test squad currently playing against Zimbabwe, but he didn’t make the XI. Rubel is an interesting exclusion though. He is usually considered a shoe-in for one-day games.”It is great to have Mortaza back as his experience and leadership is vital to our one day cricket,” chief selector Minhajul Abedin said. “Mohammad Saifuddin is also key to the team’s balance. We had to make certain adjustments in the last ODI series we had played in as a number of cricketers were unavailable due to various reasons but I am happy that we now have a fit pool of players to select from. Shanto’s current form in international and domestic cricket gets him into the team while Naim and Afif are also part of our long term plan for the shorter version.”Bangladesh will play the ODI series against Zimbabwe in Sylhet on March 1, 3 and 6.
