Spurs hit gold on £26m star who’s now worth more than Romero & Eze

If you asked the Tottenham Hotspur faithful who their most important player is, one of the first names to come to mind would be Cristian Romero.

Last season, the Argentine developed into a crucial player under Ange Postecoglou, providing aggression and leadership to the backline.

ederson-cristian-romero-spurs

Throughout the campaign, the World Cup winner started 33 Premier League matches, scoring five goals and keeping seven clean sheets in the process.

However, there’s a current player in the Spurs squad who’s now become worth even more than the irreplaceable centre-back.

What Spurs signed Dejan Kulusevski for

With attacking reinforcements needed, Spurs entered the transfer market in January 2022 with the aim of securing a short-term deal.

This is when the opportunity to sign Dejan Kulusevski arrived, and he joined on an 18-month loan deal, taking him until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Tottenham's Dejan Kulusevski

The Sweden international instantly became a hit, operating on the right of the attack across 18 Premier League matches and boasting an incredible record of five goals and eight assists in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

After then serving as a creative outlet in the following season, producing seven assists in the league, Tottenham made the winger’s loan deal permanent, signing Kulusevski for £25.6m.

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski celebrates

Today, that looks like a bargain price, especially considering they were able to reduce his initial buy option, but what exactly is Kulusevski worth in 2024?

Kulusevski’s estimated value in 2024

Last term, Spurs’ number 21 featured heavily under the Australian boss, despite the signing of Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.

The "very special" Kulusevski, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, became a constant performer, starting 31 matches in the league and only failing to make an appearance in two games all season.

Tottenham player Dejan Kulusevski

This proves how important the 24-year-old was to Spurs’ attacking structure and output, as he scored eight goals and provided three assists.

Across the entire squad, this made the former Juventus ace the club’s third-highest top scorer, only behind Heung-min Son and Richarlison, but what is Kulusevski worth today?

1. Phil Foden

£169m

2. Bukayo Saka

£127m

3. Alejandro Garnacho

£85m

4. Gabriel Martinelli

£85m

5. Dejan Kulusevski

£68m

As you can see, according to CIES Football Observatory, the left-footed ace is now estimated to be worth an incredible £68m.

This means that if Spurs were to sell the attacker, then they could be in line to make a huge profit on Kulusevski, especially as he only cost £26m.

Dejan Kulusevski.

The April-born star is also the joint-highest-valued Spurs player in the squad, alongside Destiny Udogie, who starred during his debut campaign in England, registering five goal involvements from defence.

Obviously, this means that he’s worth even more than vital cogs in the system such as Romero and Son, who are worth £51m and £25m, respectively.

Furthermore, when compared to other Premier League wingers, Kulusevski is currently the joint-fifth highest-valued winger, only behind the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Phil Foden, and the two Arsenal widemen, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. It's also even more than another attacker in Eberechi Eze, one of Spurs' alleged targets this summer.

The Crystal Palace sensation, who scored 11 goals last term, is thought to be valued at around £60m by the Eagles.

Overall, it’s clear that Spurs truly hit the jackpot by signing Kulusevski for less than £30m, and the deal should be used as a model for future transfer activity.

Report: Aston Villa star wants out, Monchi keen to swap him for two players

Aston Villa have been rocked by a report claiming that they could lose one of their stars this summer, with two players from Serie A potentially moving in the other direction.

Villans hoping to build a dynasty

After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season and extending Unai Emery's contract at the club, Villa very much look like a side on the up. In the Champions League for the first time in its current guise, the Midlands outfit face a big summer transfer window to ensure that their squad is ready to compete on multiple fronts.

They are set to kick off their summer by signing Ross Barkley, but they are now potentially facing losing one of their stars in his position.

Luiz wants out as Monchi eyes swap deal – reports

Now, news has broken that Douglas Luiz is allegedly aiming to leave Aston Villa this summer. That is according to a report coming out of Italy [Via Sport Witness] anyway, which claims that the midfielder "has decided to leave Villa Park in the next window" and has been offered to Serie A giants Juventus.

For their part, Juve are already set to lose Adrien Rabiot this summer as his contract expires, and have been chasing a midfielder all season, with Atalanta's Teun Koopmieners among those that they have looked at. Somewhat optimistically, the report claims that Luiz is valued at 40m euros by Villa (£34m), which would seem an unlikely price point for the Brazilian.

Douglas-Luiz-Aston-Villa

Coming off the back of his best ever season and having previously been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester City, Luiz is under contract at Villa Park until 2026, leaving Villa with the upper hand in any negotiations.

An alternative could be a player swap, with Villa Sporting Director Monchi reportedly keen on two Juve stars this summer. The first comes in the shape of USA midfielder Weston McKennie, who would seemingly be a like-for-like swap with Douglas Luiz given that they play in the same position.

He is down to the last 12 months of his contract in Turin, and Juve are "hoping" to receive around 15m euros (£12m) from his sale this summer should a buyer come forward.

Another player that Villa have their eye on is young maestro Matias Soule, who is returning from a successful loan spell Frosinone. Despite his side being relegated from the top flight, the midfielder put up an impressive 11 goals and three assists in his first full senior season of football.

Juve are also open to selling the Argentine, but are holding out for around 30m euros to part ways with the Aston Villa target this summer, with the 21-year-old contracted to the Old Lady until 2026.

While the valuation of Luiz does appear to be paper talk, Villa's interest in Soule is widely known, while McKennie could prove a savvy budget addition alongside Ross Barkley were they to act on their interest.

Far more concerning for Villa fans is the idea that Luiz has decided to move on, and a swap deal would likely do more harm than good for all parties.

Newcastle can land a Bruno & Joelinton hybrid in £50m gem

Newcastle United's heavy spending under the Saudi PIF could be set to continue in the summer, with the Magpies needing to dramatically improve their squad depth.

The club have looked depleted in multiple areas this campaign and undoubtedly will be looking to strengthen the defensive department after the long-term injuries suffered by Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, with the two centre-backs ruled out for up to nine months after respective ACL surgeries.

However, the Magpies will target another midfielder this window, with Eddie Howe’s side suffering with numerous issues in that department.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Joelinton has struggled with a thigh problem in recent months but has formed an excellent partnership with compatriot Bruno Guimaraes when fit.

Fellow midfielder Sandro Tonali has missed the majority of the season after his summer move, following his ban for betting in Italy. He’s set to return to action in October, but it’s unknown what fitness levels the former AC Milan man will possess after his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

After his suspension and the recent injuries, the club are targeting another midfielder this summer, with Howe needing to target one player in particular who’s caught the eye this season.

Newcastle must revive interest in Premier League talent

In recent months, Newcastle have been linked with a move for 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, following his excellent campaign under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

The Chelsea academy graduate has featured 37 times in the Premier League this season under the Argentinian, scoring five times and assisting seven – in a campaign where he's been utilised in a more advanced role.

Despite his good form in London, he could be set to depart the club, with the likes of Aston Villa also interested in signing the talent who is valued at £50m.

Gallagher has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer window, with Howe's side facing tough competition to sign the ace.

The battle is undoubtedly going to be a tough one to win for any of the sides, but the Magpies must sign the England international, with Gallagher producing stats making him the perfect Guimaraes and Joelinton hybrid.

Why Gallagher could be the perfect Guimaraes & Joelinton hybrid

When looking at the statistical record of Gallagher over the last 365 days on FBref, he’s noted as a similar player to the Brazilian pair – indicating how he could fit in smoothly at St James' Park.

The "phenomenal" midfielder, as dubbed by one Chelsea scout, has won 47% of his aerial duels and made 34 clearances – with both stats marginally higher than both of the Magpies' current midfielders.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

The Englishman has also dominated in possession, with the Chelsea talent averaging a 59% take-on success and an 89% pass completion rate – demonstrating his qualities with and without the ball.

There's no denying that Guimaraes is a crucial cog in Howe's side, but Gallagher has been very underrated in an underperforming side, with his ability in and out of possession potentially completing Newcastle's midfield puzzle.

With Guimaraes at the base and Gallagher alongside him, the central trio would seemingly then be completed by the aforementioned Joelinton, with the Brazilian committing his future to the club, signing a new long-term deal on Tyneside.

As such, Howe and the Saudi PIF should hijack any attempts from other Premier League clubs and bring the Chelsea midfielder to St James' Park this summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Twenty-one-year-old Quansah made his senior debut for Liverpool in 2021 after graduating from their academy. While the youngster still has three years left in his existing contract, the club are already planning to extend it as they consider it to be a reward for his consistency on the pitch. Konate, on the other hand, has two years left in his contract. After a disappointing outing in the 2023-24 campaign, the French defender has significantly improved under Slot's tutelage having scored twice. The Premier League giants have initiated preliminary talks to tie him down to a new long-term deal.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Alexander-Arnold's future at Anfield has also come under scrutiny as the right-back has attracted interest from Real Madrid. The England international will be free to negotiate with clubs abroad if he fails to agree to a new deal before January.

Top target: Newcastle want to sign "unbelievable" PL star who’s like Gordon

Coming off the back of an injury-ridden campaign, it seems Newcastle United are going to be busy this summer in preparation for the next Premier League season.

The extra games coming from playing European football, mixed with a lack of squad depth, left Newcastle very thin at times in the 2023/24 season, costing them to drop off in the second half of the campaign and finish seventh on 60 points.

However, one standout performer was Anthony Gordon, and if Newcastle could add another player of this calibre to produce those numbers from the opposite side, it would give them a great chance of bouncing back next season.

Newcastle transfer news

According to reports from Football Insider, Newcastle are eyeing a new right wing signing, with West Ham star Jarrod Bowen among their top targets after missing out on Michael Olise.

Newcastle want to bolster their squad in several areas according to these reports, with right wing, centre-back, goalkeeper, and centre-forward all areas of interest.

Bowen is coming off the back of an excellent campaign, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, his best tally since joining West Ham back in 2020.

West Ham star Jarrod Bowen

How Bowen compares to Gordon

To start to compare the two, we first have to look at their respective seasons. As previously mentioned, Bowen netted 20 goals in all competitions for West Ham in the 2023/24 campaign, also providing ten assists, and making 44 appearances for the Hammers.

Meanwhile, Gordon scored 12 goals for Newcastle in all competitions, providing 11 assists and making 48 appearances overall. 37 of Gordon's appearances came from the left wing, whilst seven came from down the middle, and three came from the right-hand side.

From their G/A numbers, you can instantly assume Bowen is a more prolific goalscorer, and the stats line up with this assumption. Bowen scores 0.43 non-penalty goals per 90, whilst taking 2.6 shots per 90, and having 1.08 shots on target per 90.

Gordon has only scored 0.27 non-penalty goals per 90, took 2.33 shots per 90, and got 0.84 shots on target per 90. This shows the West Ham man is a higher-volume shooter and gets himself into areas to score goals slightly more often than Gordon.

Jarrod Bowen celebrates for West Ham

However, where the 23-year-old Newcastle winger falls behind in goal scoring and shooting metrics, he eclipses Bowen's creative numbers. Gordon makes 4.17 shot creating actions per 90, gets 0.27 assists per 90, and has an xAG (expected assisted goals) of 0.23.

Bowen, in comparison, only creates 2.77 shot-creating actions per 90, gets 0.25 assists per 90, and has an xAG of 0.16. The 27-year-olds passing numbers aren't the best, but this could be subject to playing a more direct style of football under David Moyes at West Ham, and having to play several games as a striker due to Michail Antonio's absence this season.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen.

It makes a lot of sense as to why Newcastle would want to add the firepower of the "unbelievable" Bowen on their right side, giving them a goal-scoring threat on both wings, players who can create chances, but also two widemen who work extremely hard for their side, a big feature of Eddie Howe's at Newcastle.

Man Utd now "open" to selling £120k-p/w player and signing two replacements

Manchester United are now ready to part ways with a member of their first team squad and replace him with two new faces, it has been reported.

Red Devils readying changes

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's influence at Manchester United has been slower than initially anticipated at Old Trafford since the INEOS chief took charge of proceedings at the beginning of the year.

Erik ten Hag, who many expected to leave the club following his eighth placed finish in the Premier League, is now staying and in talks to sign a new contract with the Red Devils, while the only departures so far this summer have been Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane, both of whom are out of contract this month, and Sofyan Amrabat, whose loan from Fiorentina expires at the end of the month.

Major interest: Man Utd keen on "superstar" who's a Wirtz & Musiala hybrid

The Man Utd target got 19 G/A last season.

ByTom Lever Jun 18, 2024

Meanwhile, reports continue to suggest that almost everyone is up for sale as they target a refresh, though the club are on the verge of agreeing an extension to Jonny Evans one year deal at Old Trafford in a bizzare turn of events.

No bids have yet come in for players, which has slowed down potential changes to the squad, though a centre-back and a left-back are on the club's wishlist alongside a central midfielder and a backup striker to provide cover and competition for Dane Rasmus Hojlund. Now, their transfer window could finally spark into life with one player potentially on his way out.

United give green light to departure and plan replacements

That comes courtesy of Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, who claims that the Red Devils "would be open" to selling Victor Lindelof this summer amid interest from Fenerbahce. The Swede is down to the final 12 months of his £120,000 a week deal at Old Trafford and was a clear second choice option for Ten Hag on the rare occasion when everyone was fit.

He appeared 19 times in the Premier League last season, and was asked to cover at left-back as well as in central defence when fit, but has never really looked likely to nail down a starting berth following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez.

Now, he is wanted by former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, who took charge of the Turkish giants at the beginning of the month. No fee is mentioned in the potential deal, but the defender is valued at £13m by transfermarkt and such a fee would not be an unreasonable expectation.

And the club have a succession plan. Should Lindelof leave, Plettenberg reports United would look to sign two defenders instead of one this summer, having seen an opening bid for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected last week.

They are also keen on Leny Yoro, who is a target for Real Madrid and Liverpool, while Matthijs de Ligt "remains a transfer target" after falling down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena.

It is unlikely that two of those three would arrive at Old Trafford though, with Lindelof's secondary role likely to be filled by a lower-cost option should he ultimately leave for pastures new this summer.
