£29.5m: Man Utd discuss move for the most valuable free agent on the market

INEOS are reportedly holding internal talks over Manchester United completing the signing of an "extraordinary" free agent – one who is more valuable than anyone else on the market currently.

Man Utd struggling despite new signings

It has been a testing start to the season at Old Trafford, with two defeats already coming their way in their opening three Premier League matches, including last weekend's humbling 3-0 loss at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool. Casemiro's performance was so poor that he was substituted at half-time – he essentially cost his side two goals – but Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Brazilian is still likely to stay put this month.

It was a good summer transfer window for United, despite their current struggles, with Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt strengthening the defence, Manuel Ugarte acting as an upgrade on Casemiro and Joshua Zirkzee joining from Bologna to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund. However, Ugarte is not expected to be fully fit for many weeks or even months, according to Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

In terms of other additions, free agent Yusuf Yazici has reportedly been offered to the Red Devils, with the 27-year-old leaving Lillie earlier in the year, being seen as a possible upgrade on the ageing Christian Eriksen. It remains to be seen if United will take up the offer, but a host of clubs are believed to be in the mix. There is still a chance for Ten Hag to bring in further players to bolster his squad – and his chances of staying in the job – but only free agents are available.

INEOS hold talks over signing "extraordinary" ace

According to a fresh claim from TEAMtalk, Manchester United owners INEOS are holding internal talks over the signing of Adrien Rabiot, who left Juventus at the end of last season, given the dire straits they find their midfield in after Casemiro's nightmare start and Ugarte's struggle to get fit.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Old Trafford plenty of times in recent months, being seen as an ideal figure to come in and add class to the midfield, and he is currently the most expensive free agent listed on Transfermarkt, being valued at £29.5m. He would however go against INEOS' strategy of targeting younger players on lower wages, perhaps what is currently keeping the internal discussions from progressing to a formal offer.

Rabiot could be a real signing of intent on top of Ugarte, easing the workload of the waning Casemiro and the need to play him, with so much quality in his armoury, both on and off the ball. Last season, he scored five goals and registered three assists in Serie A, as well as averaging 1.9 tackles per game. The 29-year-old has also been lauded by former France and Juve striker David Trezeguet, who waxed lyrical over him back in 2022.

"We are talking about a problem for Juventus because in Italy he may have been targeted for criticism, but in France it’s completely different. He is world class, an extraordinary player. Now he will evaluate his options and will go back to being the important player he always was."

Whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe manages to entice Rabiot to United remains to be seen, but if he can strike a deal for him, it could be an inspired piece of business. The fact that he would come in on a free transfer also takes out plenty of risk, should he struggle to set the world alight at Old Trafford.

Richard Gould, Surrey CEO, to take up post at Bristol City

Prominent advocate of county game leaves to return to roots in South West

George Dobell14-May-2021Richard Gould, the chief executive of Surrey, is to leave the game to take up a similar position at Bristol City football club.Gould, who was previously chief executive at Somerset, has spent 10 years at The Kia Oval. In that time the club has undergone an extensive redevelopment, consolidated its position as a financial powerhouse of the game and enjoyed years of record financial success. From a cricketing perspective, the club has also won the County Championship, almost doubled its membership and produced numerous England players. Surrey have also consistently set the standard in terms of ticket sales for both domestic and international games.”It has been an absolute honour to lead Surrey County Cricket Club for the past decade,” Gould said. “It will always be a part of my life and I would like to thank our staff, players and members for their hard work, wonderful support and good humour throughout.”As the world of sport continues to evolve, Surrey CCC and The Kia Oval represent something very special indeed and I very much look forward to watching the Club’s continued growth over years to come.”Richard Thompson, Surrey County Cricket Club Chair, added: “Richard has been an exceptional CEO of Surrey CCC over a ten-year period, always prepared to speak his mind, with great clarity, honesty and always integrity. Richard should be proud of his legacy and know that he will always be a valued friend to the club that he has contributed so much to in so many ways.”Perhaps Gould’s true legacy will be as a champion of the county game. Unafraid of questioning the policies of the ECB executive, he has been a vocal critic of the Hundred and was a key figure in the founding of the Professional Game Group (PGG) which has given the county game more power and independence. As a result, he has sometimes clashed with the hierarchy at the ECB.Indeed, his departure robs the county game of one of its most prominent defenders. While there are other administrators with similar views, none of them have the heft earned by Gould for his success at both a Test-hosting and a non-Test hosting county. Without the PGG, for example, it is highly likely there would have been no Bob Willis Trophy in 2020.He is expected to leave Surrey in a month. Charlie Hodgson, who is currently Managing Director of The Kia Oval, will take over from Gould on an interim basis.Related

Gould’s family links with football are extensive. His dad, Bobby Gould, led Wimbledon to the FA Cup and managed Wales, while his brother, Jonathan, played for Celtic (among others) and has also enjoyed a successful career as a coach. Richard Gould’s first job after leaving the army – he was a Tank Commander in the 1st Royal Tank Regiment – was as commercial director of Bristol City. He was also schooled in the city and has two children at university there at present. He has continued to live in Somerset while working at Surrey.Whether this spells the end of Gould’s involvement in cricket remains to be seen. He is only 51 and, with the ECB CEO’s job expected to become available again in the relatively near future – Tom Harrison is likely to be among the front-runners for the vacant role of ICC chief executive – it is not impossible he could be in the running. He narrowly missed out on the position in 2014 when he made it to the final two, but Harrison was appointed instead. A position as a non-executive director on the ECB board might also be a possibility at some stage. His preparedness to call out the ECB for their errors has rocked boats, however. And while there are many lovers of the county game who owe him much, he has probably accumulated a couple of enemies along the way. Appointing him to the ECB role now, given his antipathy for the Hundred, in particular, might be perceived as a significant U-turn.

Alastair Cook finds his old self at New Road as Essex take a grip

First hundred of the season for former England captain steers visitors

George Dobell29-Apr-2021

Alastair Cook unfurls his lesser-spotted cover drive•Getty Images

For a bowling attack which had just spent an entire day in the field without taking a wicket, the sight of Alastair Cook walking out to bat must have been dispiriting.Sure, Cook hasn’t been in the runs this season. His six previous innings had realised only one score above 15 and none of 50. But he was always going to come good. Even before this match, he averaged 111.25 in first-class games against Worcestershire on this ground. Putting him up against this team at present is like presenting an arachnophobic with a tarantula sandwich. So it was that, served a slow track offering bowlers little but toil and heartbreak, Cook gorged. He is, perhaps, just a little more expansive than when he last played for England – just a bit more willing to have a dart outside off stump – but the basics of his game have not changed for many years. Block, leave and if the bowlers stray, especially on to his legs, put them away. If you’ve seen him bat before, you can imagine this innings. This was the 68th first-class century of his career and his 25th for Essex. For much of the day you wondered who would go first: Cook or the cathedral.Related

Spare a thought for those Worcestershire’s bowlers. They came into this game having not taken a wicket in the Nottinghamshire second innings last week – Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater batted for four sessions to secure a draw – and then went through the first session of this match with the same result. They did not, by any means, bowl poorly. But not only is this surface offering them little, their fielders offer them even less. Four chances went down – none of them easy, to be fair – with Nick Browne put down by Daryl Mitchell in the slips on 8 and 13, off Dillon Pennington and Charlie Morris respectively, before Ben Cox dropped Tom Westley, on 45, off the admirable Ed Barnard. Then, from the final ball of the day, Dan Lawrence, on 29, was missed by Cox off Pennington. To make matters worse for the bowler – who cried out in anguish – the ball flew away for four. It was telling that, when a wicket did fall, it did not involve a fielder.By then, Worcestershire had been in the field for nine-and-a-half hours (or five sessions and 25-minutes, if you prefer) without success. They were also without their captain, Joe Leach, who was rested as part of the club’s rotation policy. Jake Libby therefore became Worcestershire’s latest captain, which gave a new opportunity for young pace bowler Pennington. But pace is a dubious asset on this surface. Particularly against a man as adept against it as Cook. And hard though Worcestershire’s bowlers tried, they just couldn’t coax enough out of this surface to beat one of the broadest bats in the business.”On wickets like this, you really hope those chances stick,” Worcestershire’s bowling coach, Alan Richardson, said afterwards. “I thought the boys stuck at it really well. It was slow again so you had to be really disciplined with bat and ball.”In truth, this wasn’t the most riveting day’s cricket. With Worcestershire making Essex work for the runs and Essex refusing to take chances, it was a day of steady accumulation. A pitch as slow as this simply doesn’t allow for much else. That is an observation not a criticism. The square here was under water only a few weeks ago (this ground floods regularly during the winter) and, since then, we’ve had a bitterly cold April which will have done nothing to promote grass growth. It’s all very well the England management calling for “better” pitches; we have to be reasonable with our expectations. It’s almost a miracle they are playing here at all.Cook’s innings was chanceless. Once, on 29, he scuffed the ball just short of mid-on off Barnard. And once he was fortunate to see the ball scurry to the third man boundary off the face of his bat as he attempted to leave one. But generally, there was a sense of inevitably about his century long before it was achieved.Still, it was revealing that, after all his success, Cook admitted to some feelings of insecurity after his modest start to the season.”I’ve been struggling for rhythm this year,” he said. “It’s a horrible feeling when you go home knowing you haven’t delivered. I can’t remember the last time I batted so long. You almost forget you can do it. You have to trust yourself and know that you can score runs and you will score runs.”It was a grind today. But it was a nice wicket to bat on. It’s very flat. So it was about getting in and making it count. I wanted to go big.”It probably tells you everything you need to know about Cook’s hunger for runs that, after his dismissal, playing on as he attempted to cut, he looked utterly aghast. All those runs, all those centuries, yet still he’s hungry. This was his third first-class century against Worcestershire at New Road in a run that dates back to 2005. He now averages 112 here for Essex. With Tom Westley he put on 139 in 48 overs. While Westley, too, had to earn his runs – his half-century took 144-balls – he did play some impossibly elegant shots. In particular, there were successive on-drives for four – one off the front foot, the other the back – which were things of real beauty. Not for the first time, the thought occurred that while you might want Cook for his reliability, it is Westley’s batting with which you could fall in love.Whether this pitch will remain flat for the rest of the match remains to be seen. That last delivery of the day seemed to have more life than anything that went before. It may well be that Essex are well on the way to establishing a match-defining position.

É a decisão dele nesse momento. Acho difícil a permanência.

Fee agreed: Wolves bid accepted to sign attacking gem; personal terms done

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a left-footed attacking gem for Gary O’Neil, following on from their £10m agreement for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Wolves signings so far

The Old Gold have made three permanent signings so far this summer, with Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima and Tommy Doyle signing from SC Braga, Sport Recife and Manchester City respectively. Jorgen Strand Larsen also arrived on loan from Celta Vigo and scored his first Premier League goal for Wolves in the club’s heavy 6-2 defeat to Chelsea.

In regards to exits, Wolves have once again cashed in on a number of stars, with centre-back Max Kilman joining West Ham in a £40m deal and winger Pedro Neto signing for Chelsea for around £54m.

Speaking after the loss at Molineux on Sunday, O’Neil addressed the club’s transfer plans, saying: "Everyone knows the financial restrictions we have and have been there since I arrived. We have raised good funds in this window and the squad will need help.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

"Once the window shuts it doesn't open for a good few months, when it shuts we need to be comfortable with where we are. There's a lot of work for myself, I need to get more out of the group we have. Then there's an understanding the Premier League is tough and if you sell good players it makes you weaker.

"We'll see if it's a breakeven window by the time it shuts next Friday. We have raised some good funds and hopefully we can use them well in the next few days."

He is rumoured to have a release clause in his contract

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 28, 2024

A transfer breakthrough has now been made for Wolves though, with an agreement reached on Wednesday for Johnstone, but they also look to be closing in on one who may not bolster O’Neil’s first-team squad straight away.

Wolves agree deal to sign Ethan Sutherland

According to Football Insider on Wednesday, Wolves have agreed a permanent deal to sign 18-year-old winger Ethan Sutherland from St Mirren. The report claims that the youngster is heading south for a medical, with personal terms also agreed over a transfer. Since then, Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has added that a fee will be in the region of £300,000.

Sutherland is a left-footed winger who has progressed through the St Mirren youth system since 2022 after leaving Rangers. He spent the second half of last season on loan with League One side Alloa Athletic, scoring two goals and registering six assists.

You'd expect Sutherland could start out in the Molineux academy after signing, but he’ll be looking to progress into Wolves’ first-team setup in years to come. Hopefully, Wolves will follow this deal up with a few more senior signings before the deadline to keep O'Neil happy over the coming months and heading into 2025, possibly looking to replace Neto and Kilman.

Dream for Dessers: Rangers could finally replace Sima with £5m gem

Glasgow Rangers could see a few members of the first team squad depart between now and the Friday evening transfer deadline.

Ben Davies was the first to depart, joining Birmingham City on a season-long loan deal, but there will be others.

Todd Cantwell is reportedly in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a move to the Championship side before Friday, while Scott Wright is set to undergo a medical at Birmingham City as the Light Blues have accepted a bid for the winger.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

These outgoings are all fine and well as it will allow Philippe Clement to raise some funds for new signings, but he will have to act swiftly in order to replace those that are leaving.

Plenty of targets have been linked in recent months and weeks, but despite Clement’s desire to bring some high quality players to Ibrox, it hasn’t quite worked out as planned.

Phillipe Clement

Indeed, a move for former loanee Abdallah Sima was one of the sagas during the earlier weeks of the transfer window, but no permanent move ever materialised for the Senegal international.

Rangers missed out on Abdallah Sima

Despite the Gers showing interest in bringing Sima back to Ibrox this summer, this time on a permanent basis, it became clear that he wouldn’t be making a move back to Scotland.

Indeed, he ended up making a move to French side Stade Brest on yet another temporary move away from Brighton. The Ligue 1 side will be taking part in the Champions League this season, perhaps a key incentive in Sima’s decision.

The 22-year-old was one of the few bright sparks for the club last season, as he scored 16 goals in all competitions for the club, grabbing two assists in the process.

He was certainly one of the most successful loan signings the Gers have made in recent history, and it is a pity he won't be back in Scotland this year.

In the Premiership, Sima succeeded with 1.2 dribbles while averaging 2.9 shots per game, statistics which clearly showcased his ability at beating his man and displaying a keen eye for goal.

So far, Clement has yet to sign a winger who can offer what Sima did last term. Rabbi Matondo has shown flashes of brilliance, but lacks the consistency to be truly great, while Oscar Cortes has struggled with injury issues of late.

This could see the Belgian dive into the transfer market and bring in a winger before the deadline.

Rangers' dream Sima alternative

As reported earlier this week, the Light Blues are showing interest in winger Ibrahim Adel following his heroics for Egypt during the recent Olympic Games in Paris as the country reached the semifinals.

Premier League new boys Leicester City and Ipswich Town are also showing interest in the Pyramids FC gem, who could cost around £5m if he is to be lured away from North Africa.

No approach has been made as yet – and there is talk that Adel could be on his way to Spain – but hopefully this could change in the next day or two as things may get heated due to the transfer window closing on Friday evening at 11.30pm.

He certainly has plenty of ability and would be an ideal signing to replace the goals of Sima on the left wing. The question is, will a concrete move be made for the African starlet?

Ibrahim Adel’s season in numbers

The winger made 23 appearances during the 2023/24 season for his club, scoring seven times and providing two assists, with all of these goal contributions coming in the league.

Across 17 games in the Egyptian Premier League, Adel also created two big chances, averaged 1.3 key passes per game and succeeded with 1.2 dribbles per game, clearly demonstrating his attacking talents despite starting 12 league games.

These qualities would make him a solid fit in the current Gers starting XI, especially with the need for Clement to add more goals from out wide.

It was his exploits in France over the summer, however, which have certainly allowed Adel to capture the public eye.

In six matches, the winger scored three goals, created a big chance, averaged 1.7 key passes and registered an impressive 3 successful dribbles per game – a success rate of 67% – as he came so close to winning a medal, losing to Morocco in the playoff for the bronze medal.

His direct approach could also see him work wonders for Cyriel Dessers, who clearly needs someone out wide to supply him just as Sima did last term.

Why Ibrahim Adel could be a great signing for Cyriel Dessers

Dessers has certainly generated somewhat of a marmite impression on the Ibrox faithful, as half of the supporters love his work rate and attitude, while the other half think he isn’t good enough.

Five goals in six matches to open up the current campaign is just one way to silence his doubters and he could be key if this form continues.

The Nigerian international linked up well with Matondo during the 6-0 win over Ross County last weekend and if this sort of chemistry continues in the coming weeks, it could see the Light Blues carry on their momentum of late.

There is no doubt that another winger is required if Clement aims for success on all fronts this term, although it will depend on how many players leave.

Adel may cost £5m but judging by his displays for club and country over the previous 12 months, it could be a wise investment indeed.

It appears as though several players are going to be sold within the next day or two, signifying the need to bring more signings to the club.

The next 48 hours could be frantic, especially if the Belgian manages to conduct the business that he wishes to do in that time frame.

Dream for Diomande: Rangers chasing late move for £1.2m sensation

Philippe Clement has just a few days left to make some signings…

Rangers wanted to sign amazing star in 2023, now he’s a Ballon d’Or nominee

With just three wins in seven games, Glasgow Rangers have already been knocked out of the Champions League while trailing in the Premiership title race.

It is clear Philippe Clement had a lot to ponder during the recent international break. How can the Ibrox side improve, however? That is the key question that the majority of supporters will be asking as the domestic season makes a return this week.

After just a few weeks of the new season, only a couple of the summer signings had made much of an impact, showcasing how poor the transfer window was for the Light Blues.

Clement is short in several departments, which could have been solved by moving on those seeking an exit faster and trying to add key targets earlier in the window.

Of course, a few players looked as though they were on the way to signing for the Gers, until changing their minds and moving elsewhere, which was obviously disappointing.

The players Rangers missed out on this summer

Not long after the campaign ended, Rangers were showing plenty of interest in centre-back Jose Córdoba as Clement aimed to bolster his defence ahead of the new season.

Reportedly, the defender signed a preliminary contract with the Light Blues as it looked as though the first signing of what could be an important summer was going ahead.

A few days later, however, it emerged that the club had pulled out of a move for the Panama international before he moved to the English Championship, joining Norwich City.

The chance to potentially play in the Premier League while earning a bigger wage was an obvious incentive for the player, things which Rangers couldn’t offer.

Albion Rrahmani was another target that the Ibrox side missed out on this summer. The striker had a price tag of £5m set by his club side in order for any team to sign their prized asset, but this clearly became a stumbling block for the Gers.

Soccer Football – Serie A – Napoli v Salernitana – Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Naples, Italy – January 23, 2022 Napoli's Amir Rrahmani celebrates scoring their third goal REUTERS/Ciro De Luca

No bid was made by Clement, and Rrahmani soon moved to Sparta Prague for a fee in the region of £4.25m, suggesting that the club should have sent in a tempting offer to see what might have happened.

These two players could well have slotted into the starting XI with ease and perhaps ensured the club started the season in a livelier fashion.

Clement isn’t the only manager of the club to miss out on players who were either key targets or those who went on to bigger and better things after Rangers were linked.

Indeed, someone who was linked last year has now been nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year – Cole Palmer.

When Rangers missed out on Cole Palmer

Michael Beale took charge of the Light Blues following the sacking of Giovanni Van Bronckhorst in November 2023 and enjoyed a decent start to his time in charge.

The Englishman won nine of his first ten matches in charge as he eyed silverware in order to salvage something from the season.

With the January transfer window open, Beale eyed reinforcements, eventually ending the month having brought Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin to Scotland.

Prior to the window closing, the Gers were also eyeing up a loan move for Cole Palmer, as the Manchester City youngster was looking for regular game time.

According to the Sun, the club had a loan bid rejected by Man City in order to bring Palmer north of the border for the second half of the campaign, as Pep Guardiola claimed the attacker had a part to play as City were chasing a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

There is no doubt he would have improved the starting XI and Palmer is now one of the finest players on the planet.

Cole Palmer’s statistics at Chelsea

Despite Palmer playing a part in winning all three trophies for City, he surprisingly joined Chelsea last summer for £40m, which has since turned into one of the biggest bargains.

Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, the Englishman scored 25 goals and registered 15 assists in all competitions for the Blues, a record that saw him nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

When compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, Palmer ranked in the top 1% for assists per 90 (0.48), the top 6% for shot-creating actions (5.70) and total shots (3.45) per 90 and in the top 8% for non-penalty goals (0.44) per 90, clearly flourishing at Chelsea after being given a starring role in the team.

These displays led to Gareth Southgate calling him up to the England squad for the 2024 European Championship, where he scored a stunning equaliser in the final against Spain.

Although England would lose the game, Palmer returned to Chelsea full of confidence, already scoring once and grabbing four assists in just three Premier League matches.

The “elegant” starlet – as so dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – has since seen his market value increase exponentially due to his productive start to life as a Chelsea player.

According to Transfermarkt, Palmer is now currently valued at £67m, which represents a massive leap considering they only paid £40m for him just over a year ago, the same summer Rangers wanted him on loan.

Enzo Maresca would be able to land a substantial profit should the youngster seek a move away in the near future, although it is clear Chelsea will be determined to keep him for as long as possible.

Beale certainly chanced his luck in trying to get the sensation on a loan deal at the start of last year, and he would have thrived in Scotland, no doubt about it.

Even though it would only have been a loan deal, the club must rue not getting a move over the line, especially with how the Gers performed between January and May that season.

Unbeaten ton from debutant Devon Conway sets platform for New Zealand

With the tourists 113 for 3 midway through the opening day, England would have aspired for a firmer foothold

An unbeaten hundred from New Zealand’s debutant opener, Devon Conway, set the platform for the visiting side as the return of Test cricket to Lord’s was marked by a day of hard yakka in the field for England. Ollie Robinson, another man on Test debut, claimed two of the three wickets to fall before a century stand for the fourth wicket between Conway and Henry Nicholls put New Zealand in control of proceedings. With the scoreboard on 113 for 3 midway through the afternoon session, and with New Zealand’s three most-experienced batters back in the dressing room, England would have aspired for a firmer foothold in the match – despite a placid surface of the variety that Chris Silverwood and Joe Root have called for as they seek to develop a side capable of winning attritional cricket away from the green fields of home. But Conway, the 29-year-old South African-born batter who spent three years qualifying for New Zealand on residency, produced a near-faultless performance after being brought into the side as Tom Latham’s newest opening partner, as he and Nicholls ground down England’s four-man seam attack. Not for nothing are New Zealand, who have perfected the blueprint of capitalising on favourable batting conditions and then transferring pressure on to the opposition, over here to contest the World Test Championship final.Conway was fluent throughout, capably adjusting his tempo according to the situation – he scored just four runs in a 50-minute period after lunch during which Kane Williamson was dismissed, before driving Stuart Broad for the boundary that brought up his fifty. And there were no nerves as he moved through the 90s in the space of 10 balls, a flamingo-flicked boundary through backward square leg off Robinson taking him to three figures and a place on the Lord’s honours board. In the process, he became the 12th man to score a hundred on Test debut for New Zealand, and the sixth man to do so at Lord’s; no overseas opener had ever achieved the feat previously in England.Related

Conway’s day began with a wait of three full overs before he faced a ball. But then he has long learned the value of patience. Conway came to England for his maiden Test tour in possession of one of the most-formidable first-class records in the world, having churned out runs in New Zealand’s domestic circuit while serving his qualification period. For Wellington, he has scored more than 2000 runs at 66.25, and his Test debut had become a matter of when rather than if.He barely gave a chance during a full day in the middle, although he was briefly discomforted by a short-ball barrage during Mark Wood’s opening spell, in which the England quick was clocked at 96mph/154kph. When he had made 77, a flick off Robinson flew past the diving Zak Crawley at leg slip, and a top-edged swipe at Wood just cleared the leap of wicketkeeper James Bracey after he had brought up his century.Nicholls was the man out in the middle to congratulate Conway when he reached his landmark, warmly applauded by the New Zealand balcony as well as the 6,700 spectators allowed into Lord’s. New Zealand’s No. 5 was happy to play the foil as he batted unobtrusively through the evening session to finish within sight of a fifty of his own; England found his pads on a few occasions, but the one time they did review, Wood’s delivery was found to have pitched outside leg stump. The morning began with Lord’s relaxing into a Test match routine for the first time since the 2019 Ashes – albeit on a smaller scale, with crowd capacity capped at 25% due to Covid-19 restrictions. After England’s 2020 international summer was played entirely behind closed doors, the atmosphere was lively and expectant, though some way removed from the fevered scenes that accompanied New Zealand’s last trip to Lord’s for the World Cup final two years ago.As he did on that day, Williamson won the toss and chose to bat – the traditional approach in Tests and never an easier decision than on a bright, sunny morning in St John’s Wood. New Zealand were trying out their fourth opening partnership since England toured there in late 2019, but Conway and Latham immediately slipped into a groove together, adding a 58-run stand in even time as England’s venerable new-ball pair of James Anderson and Broad searched – largely in vain – for signs of seam and swing.Unusually, Anderson opted to open the bowling from the Nursery End, with Broad running in from in front of the Pavilion. The experiment did not last long, however, with Joe Root bringing on Robinson in the 10th over and switching Broad’s end. Robinson started with a front-foot no-ball but soon found his rhythm, nibbling the ball both ways in the channel outside off – and he made the breakthrough for England in his fourth over, a hint of seam movement taking the ball into Latham’s timbers via an inside edge. With Lord’s beginning to look like one of the shirtfronts that were familiar here during the 2000s, New Zealand reached lunch on 85 for 1. Their equilibrium was briefly disturbed when Williamson made a rare misjudgement to his first ball after the interval, steering a delivery from Anderson down into his off stump, and Robinson then continued his encouraging first appearance in Test whites by trapping Ross Taylor lbw to end a skittish innings. But New Zealand were just getting started, and Conway remains far from finished.
