Clement can finally axe Tavernier by starting amazing Rangers ace

Glasgow Rangers endured a heavy defeat in the Europa League on Thursday evening at Ibrox as Lyon emerged 4-1 victors on matchday two of the revamped league phase.

The Light Blues are still in a position to qualify, but a marked improvement during their next European clash against FCSB will be needed.

Philippe Clement’s side take on St Johnstone this evening in the final Premiership match before the international break. The Gers could be trailing Celtic and Aberdeen by eight points come the start of the game, hence the importance of claiming all three points in Glasgow.

Several changes could be made to the starting XI, with one notable name potentially dropping to the bench after yet another subdued performance…

James Tavernier was poor against Lyon

The captain hasn’t quite been at his best this term, especially with regard to his attacking output. Across all competitions in 2023/24, he scored 24 goals and grabbed 12 assists. So far this season? A paltry three assists and a single goal for the club.

Once again, he was chosen in the starting XI for the Lyon tie, but his display was poor. He only completed 70% of his passes, lost possession 12 times and won just 50% of his total duels against the Ligue 1 side.

Clement even subbed him off after 61 minutes, as Neraysho Kasanwirjo came on in his place to see out the rest of the game.

Was this a sign of things to come? The Dutchman should come into the lineup against the Saints in place of Tavernier.

Clement must now unleash Neraysho Kasanwirjo

Kasanwirjo joined on loan from Feyenoord at the end of the summer transfer window, giving Clement another option in defence.

He made his first start against Malmö last week and was superb. He lost possession just six times and completed 88% of his passes against the Swedish side. Kasanwirjo could even have notched his first goal for the club, but his effort in the final minutes missed the target.

His performance was certainly one of a confident player, and while he remained on the bench against Lyon, Clement brought him on for Tavernier with half an hour remaining.

Despite his cameo, the defender made one tackle, interception and clearance during his time on the pitch while winning 100% of his aerial duels, looking far more assured at right-back than Tavernier.

Following the game, football writer Gavin Kelly hailed his display, saying: “Kasanwirjo has to start against the better teams now, for me.

“Instantly more aggressive with his defending and gave less space and time for wingers to get going.”

This display could give Clement the encouragement he needs to drop Tavernier for the clash against the Saints, unleashing the on-loan starlet instead.

If he does, could this be the beginning of the end for the captain? Only time will tell.

Celtic had a star who was "similar to Messi", then he left for nothing

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers made a host of changes to his first-team squad during the summer transfer window by making a number of signings.

The Hoops moved to sign Arne Engels, Adam Idah, Alex Valle, Paulo Bernardo, Kasper Schmeichel, Viljami Sinisalo, Luke McCowan, and Auston Trusty to bolster the group.

Academy players can sometimes make the breakthrough to alleviate the need for new additions but, for Celtic, they ended up losing two prospects in Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata, who joined Millwall and Watford respectively.

Rocco Vata and Daniel Kelly

They are hardly the first Hoops prospects to move on from Parkhead after showing initial promise at academy level, as the Scottish giants once had a starlet who was compared to Lionel Messi.

The Celtic starlet compared to Lionel Messi

Coach David Feeney worked with this particular young talent in his teenage days and claimed that the forward was “very similar to Lionel Messi” and that “the sky is the limit” for him.

As a slight, left-footed, midfielder who can play out wide on the right or centrally, the comparison to Messi made sense from a stylistic perspective.

The coach added that he was left “astounded” by the “fantastic” youngster and that he was convinced that the player would go all the way to the top in his career.

That player, you may have guessed it, was former Celtic academy starlet Karamoko Dembele, who had just made his U20 debut at the age of just 13.

The young whiz, who had joined the academy in 2013, eventually went on to make his debut for the club, as shown in the clip below, at the age of 16 against Ross County in the 2018/19 campaign.

He went on to score one goal in ten appearances in all competitions for Celtic, as the youngster failed to establish himself as a regular under Neil Lennon or Ange Postecoglou, before being released for nothing by the Hoops in the summer of 2022.

Where Karamoko Dembele is now

The winger was snapped up by Reims on a free transfer ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and he failed to provide a single goal or assist in 15 Ligue 1 games that season.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

He was then sent out on loan to Blackpool in League One in England and enjoyed a breakout season at senior level in the third tier down south, with a return of eight goals and 13 assists in 39 appearances.

Dembele was not given a second chance at performing in Ligue 1 by Reims, though, as he was sent out on another loan for the 2024/25 campaign, to Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the now-21-year-old forward has had a solid start to the season, with four direct goal contributions in nine appearances.

However, Dembele is some way away from nearing Messi’s return of 743 goals and 356 assists at club level in his career, so it is doubtful that he will ever live up to that comparison, just as the youngster – unfortunately – never lived up to his potential during his time at Parkhead.

94% passing: 9/10 Leeds star was even better than Struijk vs Sheff Utd

Leeds United secured a huge win at Elland Road on Friday night as they returned from the international break to claim all three points against Sheffield United.

Their opponents had kept six successive clean sheets in the Championship heading into the match and the Whites were able to breach their Stoic defence twice, with both goals coming in the second half.

Captain Pascal Struijk brilliantly guided a corner into the top corner with a sweet half-volley, before substitute Mateo Joseph sealed the win with a composed finish under pressure inside the box.

The Leeds skipper, who opened the scoring, was one of the most impressive performers on the pitch with his work in and out of possession on Friday.

Pascal Struik's performance against Sheffield United

The Dutch titan, of course, made the breakthrough for the West Yorkshire outfit with a fantastic finish from the corner, but his all-round display was also superb.

Struijk completed 91% of his attempted passes throughout the game, with 75 completed in total, as he remained composed in possession to help build attacks up from the back.

The central defender also won four of his six duels and made three tackles and one interception, to keep the likes of Kieffer Moore, Gustavo Hamer, and Callum O’Hare relatively quiet.

Sheffield United ended the match with just 0.20 xG and zero shots on target against Illan Meslier, which illustrates how well the team defended on the night – Struijk being a huge part of that.

There was one player, however, who was even better than the Leeds captain against the Blades at Elland Road – central midfielder Joe Rothwell.

Joe Rothwell's performance against Sheffield United

The Bournemouth loanee, who has been given an opportunity after injuries to Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu, was incredible in the middle of the park to dictate the game alongside Ao Tanaka.

Rothwell was described as “influential” by Sky Sports commentator Don Hutchinson during the live coverage, whilst LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross dubbed him ‘immense’ and awarded the star a 9/10 player rating.

They were underselling his performances, if anything, as the central midfielder provided a metronomic presence in midfield to stop Sheffield United from getting anywhere near Leeds for large periods of the game.

As you can see in the table above, he completed a whopping 94% of his attempted passes – an even higher success rate than Struijk’s – and the Blades could not stop him from doing what he wanted to do on the ball.

Rothwell was not cautious with his use of possession, either, as he created three chances and one ‘big chance’ – assisting the defender’s goal with a clever corner routine as well.

The English dynamo also showcased his quality off the ball with three interceptions and one block to protect his goal and to win possession back for his side.

As Rothwell’s immense play in and off the ball was so crucial to Leeds’ dominance in the game, and he created the first goal for Struijk, he was the real hero and star of the show for Daniel Farke on Friday.

Rashid Khan expects spinners to play 'huge role' at T20 World Cup

“As we have seen in the IPL, spinners have brought back their team in the game; I feel that will be same in the World Cup as well.”

Afghanistan’s strike bowler Rashid Khan believes the 2021 T20 World Cup could belong to spinners. Rashid, who will be playing his second T20 World Cup, said that the spinners are always “effective” on the pitches at three venues in the UAE, where the Super 12s, as well as the semi-finals and final will be played.”Conditions here are always good for spinners and it should be a spinners’ World Cup,” Rashid told . “Doesn’t matter how wickets are prepared here, it is always helpful for the spinners. Spinners will play a huge role in this World Cup. As we have seen in the IPL, spinners have brought back their team in the game. I feel that will be same in the World Cup as well. The best spinners will bring their team back in the game and win it.”Related

While his IPL franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad, finished last on the points table, Rashid had another good season finishing with 18 wickets, the joint-highest for a spinner along with Yuzvendra Chahal and Varun Chakravarthy. Incidentally both Chahal and Rashid were among the top-10 wicket-takers even in the 2020 IPL which was fully played in the UAE as opposed to the just the second leg of the tournament this season.Overall in both IPLs in the UAE, the spinners have played a dominant hand at each of the three venues: in Dubai they have taken 30.8% of the total wickets taken, 30.1% in Sharjah, and 32.1% in Abu Dhabi. All these three venues will host the Super 12 matches as well, starting from October 23, along with the knockouts rounds. If the surfaces are to be on the slower side, Rashid felt a good spinner would always turn it to his team’s advantage. As an example, Rashid cited the low-scoring thriller in Dubai during the league phase of this IPL where Kolkata Knight Riders stuttered before eventually chasing down the Sunrisers’ 115-run target with two balls to spare. All the four spinners – Rashid, Chakravarthy, Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine – played a key role for their teams making scoring difficult on a gripping surface.”On October 3, we played against KKR, they had around four spinners, all of whom bowled at an economy of 4-5 runs per over. Doesn’t matter whatever the kind of wicket is spinners are always effective in UAE conditions. At the same time we need to bowl well as well, it is not just enough to say everything will be done by the wicket. No, no, no.”According to Rashid, Afghanistan, who are in Group 2 along with India, Pakistan and New Zealand, would need to do “lots of hard work” considering all their opponents in the Super 12s are “good players of spin”. Afghanistan have played 14 T20Is at the three venues in the UAE and have won all of them.In the 2016 edition, Afghanistan progressed to the Super 10s’ stage, but could manage just a solitary win when they defended a 123-run target against the eventual champions West Indies.Rashid, who stepped down as captain on the eve of the World Cup, pointed out that for Afghanistan to do well this edition, the batters will have a big responsibility.”As long as you have a good total, if it is a slow track, skiddy, as a spinner it is very, very helpful because you can show your skills there and you can get the wickets. In this World Cup if you bat well, we [Afghanistan] can beat any side.”Read the interview with Rashid Khan

Shafali Verma's half-century backs up Sixers' bowling effort to make it two from two

It went down to the final over but Hurricanes’ top-order problems against cost them

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2021Sydney Sixers made rather heavy weather of closing things out, but Shafali Verma’s battling half-century ensured they were able to make it two wins from two at the start of their WBBL campaign.Shafali’s innings was rarely convincing – she survived a marginal lbw shout early on, regularly just managed to evade the fielders and was striking under 100 at 16 overs – but she took on Tayla Vlaeminck in the 18th over which began with Sixers needing 24 off 18 deliveries. She scooped Vlaeminck for a boundary to reach fifty off 45 deliveries then clubbed her through the leg side with one of the most authoritative shots of the innings. With Nicole Bolton also finding the rope, the over cost 15 and all-but decided the contest. However, Shafali couldn’t quite see Sixers home when she was caught at long-on to give Molly Strano her third wicket and it was briefly nervy when Angela Reakes fell to the first ball of the last over, but Maitlan Brown kept her cool.Sixers had restricted Hobart Hurricanes to 125 but stumbled at the start of the chase. Alyssa Healy was beaten for pace by Vlaeminck as she played across the line and Ashleigh Gardner charged at Strano to leave them 2 for 14.Shafali and Ellyse Perry steadied the innings with a stand of 63 in 10 overs then, after Perry was stumped, Shafali continued to ride her luck.Hurricanes’ batting again struggled – they have a bowling attack to make an impact this season but desperately need top-order runs – and were 3 for 26 after the Powerplay. Perry claimed two wickets and Brown one, the latter courtesy of a terrific catch at point by Radha Yadav to remove Mignon du Preez.Gardner’s four overs, which included 12 dot balls, continued to keep a lid on the scoring and it was largely in the hands of Richa Ghosh to hold things together. Ghosh hit three sixes before falling to her India team-mate Yadav as Hurricanes limped to the 20-over mark.

Shades of Modric: Spurs could sign dream Bentancur upgrade in England star

The recent defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion may say otherwise, but Tottenham Hotspur do appear to now be fashioning a solid, settled side under Ange Postecoglou, with arguably only a few positions up for grabs.

Despite the collapse at the Amex, the back five – including goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario – seemingly picks itself, while the 3-0 triumph over Manchester United showcased the benefits of deploying Dejan Kulusevski alongside James Maddison in the centre of the park.

With six goals in six, Brennan Johnson is now a nailed-on starter on the right flank, while on the opposite side, long-serving star, Heung-min Son, will no doubt secure that role amid his return to injury, with club-recording signing Dominic Solanke deployed through the middle.

It could then be said that the main area of concern at present is at the base of the midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur – who was awarded a measly 4/10 match rating by football.london’s Alasdair Gold following his weekend display – arguably not a natural fit in that deep-lying berth, while teammate Yves Bissouma has flattered to deceive amid his off-field issues.

With new arrival Lucas Bergvall still only 18 – and fellow youngster Archie Gray having been typically deployed in the backline – the Lilywhites may need to dip into the transfer market in January to acquire a suitable addition or upgrade.

Spurs' search for a midfielder

As reported by Football Insider last month, the north London side are among the clubs – alongside Liverpool and Newcastle United – who are in the race to sign Lille midfielder, Angel Gomes, with the former Man United academy asset an attractive prospect with just under a year left on his existing deal.

The 24-year-old – who has again been called up by interim England boss Lee Carsley for the upcoming international break – would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with Premier League suitors in January, ahead of joining next summer.

That report has been followed up by recent claims from ex-Spurs ‘keeper Paul Robinson, who stated that “what I hear from people at the club, Gomes could definitely be an option.”

Why Angel Gomes would be a good signing

While Robinson had suggested that Gomes would be an asset as an “attack-minded midfielder”, the Englishman has looked better suited in a deep-lying role of late, ensuring he could be the man to oust Bentancur and Bissouma as Postecoglou’s number six.

It was in that role that the diminutive playmaker starred on his first senior start for his country against Finland last month, notably racking up 130 touches and enjoying a 94% pass accuracy, while also winning four of his eight ground duels, as per Sofascore.

A “special” talent – as described by his one-time Lille boss, Jocelyn Gourvennec – who is adept at controlling a game and retaining possession, Gomes has been touted as perhaps the missing piece for the Three Lions, with the nation arguably crying out for a Luka Modric-esque talent who can dictate the tempo.

Like the former Spurs hero, the in-demand star stands at just 5 foot 6, but is a truly effective performer at the base of the midfield, with former United coach Paul McGuiness likening him to Frenkie de Jong, in the way that he “can receive the ball off the back four and then move away, use disguises and so on”.

Also like Modric – who chalked up 41 goals and assists in 160 games for the Lilywhites prior to departing for Real Madrid in 2012 – Gomes can also provide a cutting edge in the final third when required, having registered eight assists and created 15 ‘big chances’ in Ligue 1 last season.

Modric, meanwhile, provided a similar record of six assists and 12 ‘big chances’ in La Liga in 2023/24.

Not just akin to the Ballon d’Or winning Croatian, the Lille maestro can also offer the upgrade on Bentancur that is needed, as evidenced below when looking at their respective stats last term.

Seemingly more astute at retaining possession, creating chances and proving stronger in the duel, Gomes would no doubt tick a lot of boxes for a progressive, attack-minded coach like Postecoglou.

As stated above, there will be notable competition for his signature due to that expiring contract, yet if Spurs can steal a march on their rivals, it could prove a worthy venture.

Hasaranga and Chameera likely to play warm-up match against Bangladesh

Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga are likely to feature for Sri Lanka in tonight’s T20 World Cup warm-up match against Bangladesh, Dinesh Chandimal has revealed, while confirming that Avishka Fernando is also likely to remain at No. 4 – a position he was utilised in to great effect in the recent T20s against Oman.Related

  • Hasaranga, Chameera released from Royal Challengers Bangalore bio-bubble

Chameera and Hasaranga were part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team whose IPL season ended on Monday with a loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator in Sharjah. The franchise, however, released the pair from their bio-bubble before that match so they could join their Sri Lanka team-mates ahead of the World Cup warm-ups.”Wanindu and Dushmantha joined up with the team yesterday and will take part in training later today, so I think both will play in the game against Bangladesh,” Chandimal said, speaking on the eve of the game during a media conference unveiling the team’s new sponsor. The game against Bangladesh, even if it is a warm-up, is likely to be a far sterner test than the one presented by Oman. That said, in both those T20 games, Sri Lanka found themselves in a spot of bother early on when batting, before being rescued by their middle and lower order. In the first game, having slipped to 51 for 4 in the 11th over, Sri Lanka got to a match-winning total of 162 thanks to an unbeaten 83 from Fernando, while in the second, chasing a target of 160, Sri Lanka had fallen to 89 for 5 in the 11th over before Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne steered them home. Fernando’s middle-order role proved crucial in that game too, his 33 off 18 the only other highlight in the innings.Avishka Fernando is set to continue at No. 4 for Sri Lanka•Ishara S.Kodikara/AFP/Getty Images

So it seems that Sri Lanka now see Fernando as a consistent middle-order option despite his having burst on the scene as an attacking opening batter during the 2019 World Cup.”Definitely having Avishka play at number four is something we have been working [on], not just in the Oman games, but in the intra-squad matches we played as well before that,” Chandimal said. “And he’s played well in that role. The main thing is that we have good plans, and if on the day we can execute those plans I think we can go far in this tournament.”On his own role in the side, Chandimal, who just a few months ago had looked a long way off Sri Lanka’s white-ball squads – let alone being selected for the T20 World Cup – says he is happy to play wherever the team needs him. However, in the games against Oman both he and Pathum Nissanka opened the innings, and Chandimal says that’s where he sees his role going forward.”It’s up to the selectors and the coaches. My plan is to bat as an opener, and keep wickets as well. But if the team needs I can bat anywhere else in the order, and field in the outfield as well.”Looking ahead to the start of the T20 World Cup’s first round, Chandimal says Sri Lanka will not be taking their Group A opponents – Ireland, Namibia and Netherlands – lightly, with all due diligence being given to their preparations.”As a team we have done a lot of analysis on the teams that we’re going to face in the qualifiers. Where their batsman like to play, what their bowlers are like, what their strengths are. The one thing is that, on the day, we need to execute the plans on the day. But as for our team, we’re in a good place mentally, and are hopeful of doing well in the tournament.”Sri Lanka face Bangladesh tonight in a warm-up game, before taking on Papua New Guinea in their second warm-up match on October 14. Sri Lanka will begin their T20 World Cup campaign in the first round against Namibia on October 18.
