Sunderland take on Preston North End on Wednesday night and manager Regis Le Bris has confirmed that a “strong” player will start the game at Deepdale.
Sunderland prepare for Preston clash
The Black Cats dropped rare points in the Championship last weekend, only managing a 0-0 draw away to Queens Park Rangers, missing the injured Chris Rigg in the process and struggling to hit the heights they have so far this season.
It was still no disaster, however, and by the end of the weekend, Sunderland were still three points clear at the top of the table, as Le Bris continues to enjoy a superb start to life as manager since arriving in the summer.
Next up for the Black Cats is a trip to Preston in the league on Wednesday evening, as they look to get back to winning ways against their 20th-place opponents. They will be favourites to prevail and three points will allay any fears that their form could be on the slide.
Sunderland will have to make do without Jobe Bellingham for the game, however, with the young midfielder suspended after his red card away to QPR, but Le Bris has been boosted by having Rigg and Dan Ballard as part of his squad for the midweek action.
"Unbelievable" Sunderland ace will start vs Preston
Speaking ahead of the game, Le Bris confirmed that Alan Browne will start for Sunderland against former club Preston on Wednesday, praising his player in the process.
“He will play, and he deserves to play obviously, because he’s a great professional with good experience, good leadership – quiet leadership, but strong leadership.
“Obviously our midfielders played very well since the beginning of the season and for Browney, he needed to wait. But, he knows that that league is so long, that he was sure he’ll have opportunities to play. It’s now and he did well, so I’m confident for him.”
Browne has been such an astute signing for Sunderland since arriving on a free transfer from Preston during the summer transfer window, bringing experience to the midfielder, in a squad littered with young players. The 29-year-old may have only started four Championship matches this season, but he has appeared 10 times in the competition in total, scoring once and completing 82.5% of his passes.
Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has hailed Browne since he became his teammate, lauding his qualities and making it clear he was always a strong opponent when the Black Cats faced Preston.
“Alan’s got an unbelievable engine, unbelievable legs. We knew that from when we played Preston previously. Every time we’ve come up against him, we’ve talked about the unbelievable engine he has. He’s a bit more of an experienced head in there as well, which helps us because me and Jobe are still young.”
Sunderland struck gold selling £8m ace who's now worth millions less

ByKelan Sarson Nov 4, 2024
With Bellingham out, the £15,000-a-week Browne’s influence is going to be vital on Wednesday, and if he plays a big role in a Sunderland win, he could retain his place at home to Coventry City on Saturday.

The focus shifted to the Tier-2 matches in the National Cricket League this week after Barisal Division beat Dhaka Metropolis by seven wickets to get within less than two points of table-toppers Chattogram Division. Barisal were also helped in their hope for promotion as Rajshahi Division were victorious against Chattogram by 166 runs. With both Tier-1 matches ending in draws after rain ruined the first day’s play at the two BKSP grounds, Rangpur Division held their lead in the points table following the game against Dhaka Division, which keeps them unbeaten in the league, while Khulna Division and Sylhet Division stood at No. 3 and 4, respectively, following their own draw.Best batters Barisal’s Salman Hossain celebrated his 50th first-class match by hitting his second century in the format, an innings worth 152 off 344 balls that included 15 fours and a six. That ton helped Barisal take a 261-run first-innings lead after Dhaka Metropolis were bowled out for just 87.Rajshahi’s young wicketkeeper Pritom Kumar struck his maiden first-class hundred as he made 117 against Chattogram. He struck 11 fours and a six in a 163-ball knock that helped revive Rajshahi in the second innings. He added 198 for the sixth wicket with the veteran Farhad Reza, who blasted five sixes and seven fours in his innings of 111 from 113 balls. For Chattogram, left-hand opener Pinak Ghosh made 102 with eight fours and two sixes to reach his fourth first-class hundred.Best bowlers Left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam was adjudged Player of the Match for his ten-wicket haul in Rajshahi’s big win over Chattogram. Sunzamul finished with figures of 10 for 132 on his way to a sixth ten-for, which got him to joint-second position for most ten-fors in first-class cricket in Bangladesh. Abdur Razzak remains on top with ten such hauls. In the same match, offspinner Nayeem Hasan also took a five-for, and finished with nine in the match, while left-arm spinner Hasan Murad grabbed 5 for 96 in the second innings. For Khulna, pacer Al-Amin Hossain finished with figures of 9 for 116 against Sylhet.Best match Rajshahi were bowled out for 194 in the first innings but retrieved the advantage quickly when they bowled Chattogram out for 119. However, Rajshahi slipped to trouble again in the second innings when they were 133 for 5 at one stage, before Pritom and Farhad combined to add 198 runs. They declared shortly after the pair was separated, but it was enough to bat Chattogram out of the game. Sunzamul took four wickets in the second innings as Chattogram were bowled out for 247.Points to ponder Rangpur (28.89) and Dhaka Division (25.40), who are separated by 3.49 points, will be battling for the Tier-1 title in the final round starting Wednesday. The promotion battle should also be close, with Barisal (26.64) less than two points behind Chattogram, who are leading the Tier-2 table with 28.10 points.Players to watch Pritom’s century bodes well for Rajshahi’s future as the once-mighty first-class team now languishes in the second tier. Meanwhile, Soumya Sarkar, who was recently dropped from the Bangladesh T20I team, made 57 for Khulna against Sylhet. Liton Das, however, managed only 24 for Rangpur against Dhaka Division.
Real Madrid have made somewhat of a habit of buying Tottenham’s star players over the years, having previously splashed out on both Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.
Now, they’ve got their eyes on more Spurs stars. One of those is defender Cristian Romero, according to reports last month. A Spanish outlet reported that Madrid had sent their chief scout Juni Calafat to watch both Romero and Arsenal defender William Saliba play in the North London Derby.
The Frenchman came out on top, with Mikel Arteta’s side winning 1-0 on the day thanks to a second-half goal from Gabriel. The Spanish giants consider both Romero and Saliba to have “enormous potential” and believe they “could fit into the Real Madrid project.”
Real Madrid interested in Porro as well as Romero
Romero isn’t the only Spurs player Madrid currently have their eyes on. According to The Mirror, the 15-times European Champions are also interested in signing full-back Pedro Porro. The Spanish defender joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth around £40 million in January 2023 and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s top full-backs and a key player in Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The Mirror add that Porro “remains a focal part of Postecoglou’s plans and Daniel Levy is expected to drive a hard bargain, should Los Blancos come calling”.
The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana previously stated that while Madrid admire Porro, Spurs chairman Levy could be a roadblock in luring the former Manchester City defender to the Spanish capital in the near future.
“The most significant obstacles to any potential move are that he has a contract until summer 2028 and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator — something executives at the Bernabeu are well aware of, with Madrid having previously signed Luka Modric and Gareth Bale from the north London club,” he explained.
Porro open to Real Madrid move
While Spurs fans will no doubt be hoping they can keep hold of Porro, comments from the player himself suggest that they might not be able to if Madrid came knocking. Speaking with Relevo last week, Porro was asked how it feels to be linked with Madrid.
He replied: “It fills you with excitement, doesn’t it? You have to focus on your work, but the fact that Real Madrid is interested in you is because you are doing things well. That’s how I think about it on a day-to-day basis.”

“Well, if that moment has to come, it will come. And if it doesn’t, well, I’ll just keep working as I have been doing,” he added.
Asked if he sees himself playing for Los Blancos one day, Porro, on £85,000-a-week with Spurs, said: “Yes. Obviously, because as I told you, I try to work and give my best every day. If I get the chance to make that leap tomorrow, I’ll be prepared.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers endured a busy summer transfer window at Parkhead for the second year in succession, since his return to Glasgow.
After replacing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout in 2023, the Northern Irish head coach had to deal with Jota and Carl Starfelt moving on, to Al Ittihad and Celta Vigo respectively, as well as Aaron Mooy deciding to retire.
The board did back him with a host of new signings, though, including the likes of Luis Palma, Paulo Bernardo, Maik Nawrocki, and Hyun-jun Yang, among others.
Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah were also brought in during the January transfer window to bolster the attack, and the former has registered 12 goals and 13 assists in 34 games for Celtic to date.
This summer, Rodgers was dealt another blow as attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley was sold to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, where he scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Manchester City down south on Saturday.
It was a big blow to lose the Denmark international from the squad during the summer transfer window, because of his form for the club in the 2023/24 campaign.
Matt O'Riley's form for Celtic last season
After Postecoglou moved on from Parkhead, Rodgers came in and helped O’Riley to find his best form at the top end of the pitch from a central midfield position.
In the 2022/23 campaign under the Australian boss, the Danish wizard only found the back of the net three times in 38 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, which shows that he was not a reliable scorer for the Hoops.
Rodgers found a way, with his 4-3-3 system, to get the left-footed ace more involved in the game in the final third, with O’Riley going from 1.8 shots per game to 2.9 shots per game in the Premiership.
The 23-year-old magician ended the 2023/24 campaign with a staggering return of 18 goals in 37 appearances in the division, 15 more than he managed in the previous season.
This shows that the Northern Irish boss unearthed a superstar by unlocking the midfielder’s goalscoring potential, whilst O’Riley also provided the team with 13 assists in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, the Denmark international was the star of the show for the Scottish giants in the top-flight last season under Rodgers, with his ability to score goals, assist his teammates, and create high-quality opportunities.
Celtic got incredible value for money out of the central midfielder, who was sold to Brighton for more than £25m this summer, when you consider that he reportedly was only on £14k-per-week, the 14th-highest in the squad.
However, his performances whilst earning £14k-per-week also shined a light on how much of a blunder the signing of Gustaf Lagerbielke was for the Hoops.
How much Celtic paid for Gustaf Lagerbielke
In the summer of 2023, during Rodgers’ first transfer window back at the club, the Celtic head coach dipped into the market to bolster his options at the heart of the defence, following the departure of Starfelt to LaLiga.
Maik Nawrocki was brought in from Legia Warsaw and the club also swooped to sign Lagerbielke from Swedish side Elfsborg for a reported fee of £3m, as well as signing him to a wage of £14k-per-week – as much as O’Riley last season.
Celtic defenderGustaf Lagerbielke.
The young, right-footed, centre-back was brought in to compete for a starting position alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers at the back for the Hoops, after Starfelt’s exit left a hole on the left side of the defence.
In the 2022/23 campaign under Postecoglou, the now-Celta Vigo star made 28 appearances in the Premiership and won 67% of his duels and completed 92% of his passes for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, Lagerbielke had made 16 appearances in the Swedish top-flight in 2023 before his move to Celtic but had matched Starfelt’s showings for Celtic.
The Swedish titan won a lower percentage of his duels in comparison to the former Hoops colossus and completed a much lower percentage of his attempted passes.
Celtic's Gustaf Lagerbielke blunder
The 24-year-old flop failed to convince Rodgers that he had the quality or consistency to play week-in-week-out for Celtic in the Premiership last season.
He ended the 2023/24 campaign with seven appearances and four starts in the Premiership, as Stephen Welsh, Nawrocki, Liam Scales, and Carter-Vickers all played more games in the division at centre-back.
Celtic defenderGustaf Lagerbielke.
This shows that Lagerbielke was the fifth-choice option out of the manager’s central defenders, which may not be what the aim for him was when the club decided to spend £3m and £14k-per-week in wages on him.
Celtic’s best player, certainly from an attacking perspective, earned £14k-per-week but the Hoops did not get anywhere near the same value from the central defender for the same price.
In the 2023/24 season, Lagerbielke, who was sent off against Feyenoord in the Champions League, made ten appearances and started six times in all competitions for the club, having cost £3.7m in transfer fees and wages – over £600k per start, which is why he has been a flop.
Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke.
He was then sent out on loan to FC Twente in the Eredivise by Rodgers, who brought in Auston Trusty from Sheffield United on a permanent deal this summer, ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
This showed that the manager did not trust him to be an option for him in the first-team this term, whilst the addition of Trusty is potentially an admission that the Swedish flop does not have a future at Parkhead – as he has already been replaced.
Lagerbielke is yet to start a league game for Twente, coming off the bench three times so far, and it currently looks unlikely that Celtic will make much of the £3.7m they have spent on him so far back, which means that the club have messed up and had a howler with the defender.
Celtic have a star with "world-class" potential and he's their next Kuhn
The Celtic attacker has yet to showcase the best of his abilities in Scotland.
Despite the constraints of FFP and PSR, Newcastle spent a sizeable £124m in the 2023/24 season, signing four players on permanent deals, and one player on a season-long loan.
The Magpies also let go of Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood to recoup some of their money, bringing in around £23m for Saint-Maximin and around £15m for Wood, who is now smashing it at Nottingham Forest with eight goals in 11 games this season.

Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, and Yankuba Minteh were three of the permanent signings, but the biggest signing of the summer was Sandro Tonali, who signed from AC Milan for around £55m.
Sandro Tonali's time at Newcastle
Before joining Newcastle, Tonali racked up 130 appearances for AC Milan in Italy, scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists in 9,158 minutes played.
Sandro Tonali
Tonali is a highly-rated midfielder, who specialises in ball carrying in central areas, has a long passing range, and can win his duels going box to box in the middle of the park.
The Italian was out for the majority of last season through a betting suspension but has returned to the Newcastle starting XI as of late, making 11 appearances and, providing two assists in 562 minutes.
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Tonali scored this week for Italy in their 1-0 victory over Belgium in the Nations League, keeping them top of Group 2 in League A.
But, Newcastle may have a midfielder even better than Tonali coming through their own ranks, and he also made his Newcastle debut in 2023, like the Italian.
Newcastle's £100m man in the making
Lewis Miley came through Newcastle’s academy system, making his Premier League debut in May 2023. The 18-year-old has gone on to make 28 appearances in his short career thus far, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 1,744 minutes.
The young English midfielder is already valued at around £18m at just 18-years-old, and that has risen from a value of just £2m in the past 12 months, according to Transfermarkt. If Miley continues on this meteoric rise, there is no reason he cannot reach the same value as some of the finest English midfielders around.

Take Declan Rice, for instance. Like Miley, he made his first-team bow at West Ham at a young age before being purchased for over £100m by Arsenal. The reason? Well, he’s a damn fine player but being English certainly helped his cause too.
Miley, whose tall 6 foot 2 frame makes him a strong duel winner, which is shown by his defensive metrics. Last term, he actually made 2.35 tackles per 90, and 1.63 blocks per 90, which was more than both Rice and Tonali managed.

The youngster has a good engine, allowing him to go box-to-box efficiently in a similar manner to Rice, impacting all phases for his side, a key trait for midfielders in the modern era.
Lewis Miley scores for Newcastle
Whilst the 18-year-old’s progression metrics are slightly worse than Rice and Tonali, he still shows an air of calm on the ball, looking to play through the lines, take the ball in tight spaces, and help in the attacking zones, as shown by his 2.16 shot-creating actions per 90.
With Arsenal’s club-record man eventually commanding a £105m fee by the time he was 24, Miley could well reach that same level, as we have already seen exponential growth from the teenager in the past 12 months.
If those progression numbers begin to improve, and the Toon teenager snatches the spot of Tonali, his value could be set to soar once again. Newcastle are already hoping for £100m for Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon has also been touted at a similar price tag. Next could well be Miley.

Aston Villa have continued the good form that got them Champions League football last season into the 2024/25 campaign. Unai Emery’s side have been impressive once again, and find themselves in third in the Premier League on 18 points.
Impressively, the Midlands outfit are top of the new-look Champions League format. They are one of only two sides, along with Liverpool, to have won all three of their games so far, which included a famous 1-0 home win over Bayern Munich.
There have been several standout players for Emery’s team this term, although none more so than Jhon Duran.
Duran’s 2024/25 season so far
It has been a simply phenomenal rise to the top for Villa’s number nine. 20-year-old Colombia international Duran simply cannot stop scoring and boasts a stupendous record in a villa shirt, especially this season.
Jhon Duran and Leon Bailey
He has played 13 matches in all competitions but has played a remarkably low amount of minutes given his importance to Emery’s side, just 437 altogether. That equates to just 4.4 full 90-minute games on average. Incredibly, he has seven goals already, a remarkable record in such a short amount of time.
The youngster is not far off catching his tally from last term. He scored five Premier League games in 2023/24 and is already on four in just 232 minutes this season. In total, his Villa record stands at 15 goals in 62 games, and just 1666 minutes.
The former Chicago Fire striker joined the Villans in January 2023, costing them £18m including add-ons. Unsurprisingly, he has risen in value since his big move to the Premier League. News outlet AS Columbia says Villa reportedly value him at £75m, should other clubs wish to buy him.
Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran
If the Colombian star leaves Villa Park for pastures anew, he could become their first major sale since Jack Grealish departed the club in 2021, a sale which proved to be brilliant given his value today.
Jack Grealish’s market value in 2024
Boyhood Villan Grealish ended his love affair with the Midlands side in 2021 when he made the move from Villa Park to the Etihad Stadium and Manchester City. NSWE fetched a hefty sum for the attacker, with City breaking the British transfer record to sign him, paying Dean Smith’s side £100m.
jack-grealish-villa
The boyhood Villa fan, described as a “menace” by football statistician Statman Dave, left Villa Park with an exceptional record.
He has been on the receiving end of a hostile reception or two when he returned there wearing the Sky Blue of the Citizens despite helping the club win promotion back to the Premier League in 2018/19, and survive relegation the following two seasons. If not for that, they may not be playing Champions League football.

Stats from Transfermarkt
There are certainly arguments to be made that the England international simply has not lived up to the price tag at the Etihad Stadium.
He has played 135 times for the Sky Blues, scoring 14 goals and grabbing 20 assists in all competitions. Grealish did play a big part in the club’s historic treble in 2022/23, but beyond that his personal success has been few and far between.
Market Movers
Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?
With that in mind, it might not come as much of a surprise that he has decreased in value considerably since joining the Citizens. Once a £100m player, Transfermarkt believe the City number 10 is now worth just £45m, £30m less than what Duran is worth now.
The considerable drop in value could be considered harsh, given he has contributed to a treble win and several other trophies outside of that. However, he has certainly not lived up to expectations from a goals and assists point of view.
Given the drop in Grealish’s value, it certainly seems as though Villa made the correct choice in selling him back in 2021. Whatever the case, Emery’s side have invested the money perfectly and are now one of the deadliest sides in England and the whole of Europe.
