Fire returns to Kagiso Rabada's eyes as he seeks to rediscover form

Pat Cummins was the only seamer to bowl more balls than Rabada in international cricket last year

Firdose Moonda in Cape Town01-Jan-2020While England wait on the fitness of their fastest bowler Jofra Archer, South Africa can relax knowing their own superstar, Kagiso Rabada, is rediscovering his form.Archer barely bowled in training on New Year’s Day due to a sore elbow while Rabada entered it on the back of his best performance of 2019, after taking seven wickets in South Africa’s win at SuperSport Park. There, Rabada played a solid supporting role in the first innings before sparking an England collapse of 6 for 46 against the second new ball in the second innings, where he attacked with intensity and found a hint of swing.ALSO READ: South Africa embrace the struggle to re-embark on road to success“There’s definitely a lot more fire in KG’s eyes at the moment,” said Quinton de Kock, who played franchise cricket with Rabada for several seasons.Rabada’s effort came at the end of his leanest full calendar year in wicket terms since his debut in 2019, with 33 wickets from eight Tests at 27.39. By way of comparison, in 2016, he played nine Tests and took 46 wickets at 23.24 and he claimed more than 50 wickets in both 2017 and 2018.A combination of being overbowled – Rabada played the full IPL in 2019 and returned with a back injury ahead of the Word Cup – and being out of ideas – South Africa did not have a dedicated bowling coach in the Ottis Gibson era – are the likeliest causes of Rabada’s slump, although Vernon Philander believes it was also inevitable, and valuable.”He was going to get a knock at some stage, a dip in form, whatever you want to call it, but the only way to get through it is to go through it yourself,” Philander said. “I am glad he has gone through it because there’s no greater learning than learning yourself. The most important part was for him to go through it and to really feel what it feels like and to now come out and identify what’s going to work for him moving forward.”As an earnest learner, Rabada has been trying to add to his arsenal from a young age. Given his athleticism and his height, pace and bounce come naturally to him and he has spoken about working on the cutter and the inswinging yorker and the IPL provided evidence that he had learnt a lot about bowling both. But at the World Cup and then in India, Rabada looked out of sorts, down on pace, and frustrated. Theories were hatched about how his overuse as an up-and-coming quick was impacting his longevity. Philander didn’t think that was the issue. “The longer you play the more you realise that the simpler you keep it, the more results you will get. He went through that phase where he wanted to try a few things and it didn’t quite worked, and now he has gone back to the old simple self and it seems to be working again.”At SuperSport Park, Rabada’s performance resembled much of what we saw of him from the early days of his career. For the most part, he pitched the ball up on off stump and let the movement he found do the rest. Occasionally, he held his length back but he didn’t overcomplicate his approach. For that, new (old) bowling coach Charl Langeveldt may deserve credit.Langeveldt worked with the South African attack under Russell Domingo between 2015 and 2017 but was dispensed with when Gibson came on board. He was re-recruited to join Mark Boucher’s coaching staff and at the team’s training camp before the series, Rabada said he was looking forward to Langeveldt’s guidance, especially his directness. “Tactically I think he’s really good,” he said. “Technically he doesn’t force things upon you. He’s really simple. He gets to the point. I just like how natural he is. He gets to the point really quickly.”It was also there that de Kock noticed the Rabada of old returning. “At the camp before the first Test, it seemed like he was really excited to get going and play. He was very motivated,” de Kock said.ESPNcricinfo LtdThat may not be the best news for England, especially with the way Archer has begun 2020. But they may be lessons from Rabada’s experience for Archer and they’ve come from a player whose bowling style is not quite the same as theirs but who has years of experience to lean on. Philander warned Archer, who was England’s most expensive bowler at Centurion, that being fast is not enough and being focused is just as important.”Extreme pace is not going to get you across the line. You need to be able to be consistent at what you do. And in international cricket guys will work you out. You can have extreme pace, rush batters and make life uncomfortable for them but at some stage, guys are going to get used to your pace and they are going to be able to play you,” Philander said.”It’s finding what works for you on different surfaces and saying, ‘I can actually hold the game as well, at whatever pace’. You don’t want to be the one guy going at five or six an over and putting the rest of the attack under pressure because you are going at five or six. It’s making sure that you have aggression but also that you can hold the game.”That’s the kind of bowler Rabada is being allowed to develop into because South Africa have found raw pace in other players, like Anrich Nortje, control from Dwaine Pretorius and space in the team for both of them, which allows them to play with four frontline quicks. “We’ve got a nice balance now,” de Kock said. “We’ve got Anna [Nortje], who bowls high 140s and is not really the most pleasant guy to face, then Vern with steady pace, Dwaine, who can hold one side and then KG who is always picking up wickets.”

David Warner becomes seventh Australian in triple-ton club

Steven Smith is now the quickest to 7000 Test runs in terms of innings played

Bharath Seervi30-Nov-20197 – The number of Australians to score a triple-century in Test cricket has gone up to seven after David Warner got there against Pakistan at Adelaide Oval on Saturday. The last was Michael Clarke against India at SCG in 2012. Warner is the fourth batsman to score a triple ton versus Pakistan, the last being Virender Sehwag in Multan in 2004.10 – Warner’s 335* is the tenth-highest individual score in a Test innings.ESPNcricinfo Ltd2 – It is also the second-highest among Australia batsmen, behind Matthew Hayden’s 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth in 2003. When he got his 335th run, Warner also eclipsed Bradman and Mark Taylor’s scores of 334 (unbeaten in Taylor’s case). Australia declared at that point.80.14 – Warner’s strike rate in his innings, which is the fourth-highest in the 31 triple-centuries scored in Test cricket. Both of Virender Sehwag’s triples and Hayden’s 380 came at better strike rates than Warner’s 335*. He scored his first 100 off 156 balls, the next 100 came off 104 deliveries, and the last 135 runs came off 158 balls.2 – Number of triple centuries in day-night Tests. Before Warner, Azhar Ali had scored 302 not out against West Indies in Dubai in 2016. It is also the first triple at Adelaide Oval, eclipsing Don Bradman’s 299 not out against South Africa in 1932, and fourth in Australia. The last triple century anywhere in the world was Karun Nair’s unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai in 2016.3 – Number of Australia batsmen to make multiple 250-plus scores in Tests. David Warner joined Bradman (5) and Clarke (2) in doing so. Among openers, only one batsman has hit more 250-plus scores: Sehwag, with four. Sanath Jayasuriya, Graeme Smith, Chris Gayle and Alastair Cook are the other openers with two 250-plus scores.111 – Runs scored by Warner off Yasir Shah from 110 deliveries. Since 2001, where ball-by-ball information is available, there have been only three instances of a batsman scoring more runs than Warner’s 111 off a single bowler in a Test innings.

Fewer touches than Pickford: Moyes must axe Everton's 5/10 "Liverpool fan"

Everton fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday evening. The Toffees had their chances to win the game but failed to capitalise, and the hosts’ second-half strike was enough to earn them all three points.

There was an early scare for Everton. Their experienced centre-back and hero of the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, James Tarkowski, came very close to getting a red card for a dangerous tackle on Alexis Mac Allister. However, it was deemed a legal challenge by VAR.

The Toffees’ biggest chance of the night fell to Beto, who got on the end of pass upfield after a Liverpool corner. The Everton striker evaded the swinging challenge from Virgil van Dijk and was clean through on goal. However, his shot could only rattle the woodwork, in what was a huge opportunity to give his side the lead.

Liverpool took the lead eventually in the 57th minute. It was Portugal international Diogo Jota who broke the deadlock with some clever footwork, shifting the ball from his right foot to his left and back to his right. From there, he fired a low shot home past Jordan Pickford to break Everton hearts.

The Toffees never really created that golden opportunity to get themselves back in the game, and Liverpool held on for the win. Despite the result, there were some good performers in an Everton shirt.

Everton’s standout performers vs. Liverpool

Derby day defeats are never nice, but the Toffees showed spirit and fight despite the result. One of the players who performed well was left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko, who came up directly against Mohamed Salah.

However, he did an excellent job of keeping the Liverpool number 11 quiet, as the stats reflect. According to Sofascore, he won four out of five tackles, the same number of ground duels, and made eight clearances. It was a heroic effort.

Another of the Toffees’ standout players at Anfield was attacking midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure. The experienced Everton number 16 was always looking to be positive and drive his side forward. In fact, it was his pass that set Beto free, from which he struck the woodwork.

The 32-year-old’s hard-working performance was also noted by GiveMeSport journalist Callum Altimas. He gave Doucoure a 7/10 for his efforts and explained that ‘he looked the most likely to create something’ for Everton.

As well as the likes of Mykolenko and Doucoure played at Anfield, a couple of Toffees players struggled, including one man in the middle of midfield.

The Everton midfielder who struggled vs. Liverpool

It was not an easy night in the middle of the park for James Garner tonight. The Everton number 37, who revealed this week that he “was a Liverpool fan” during his childhood, did not really have much of an impact on the game, which passed him by in many ways.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That is a sentiment that was certainly shared by Altimas. The journalist gave Garner a 5/10 for his efforts at Anfield, explaining that he was ‘more of a passenger than an active participant’ for much of the game, brutal words indeed.

That is certainly something that the stats back up, however. The former Manchester United man had just 31 touches, fewer than Toffees goalkeeper Pickford (44), and completed just nine from 14 passes. Off the ball, he was disappointing too, winning just two from ten ground duels.

Everton are almost certainly safe from relegation this season, despite the loss to Anfield. However, David Moyes is surely looking to build a side capable of challenging for European spots in the Premier League, and will want to lay good foundations this season.

Perhaps he will decide to rotate Garner out of the side for the Toffees’ next game, a tough outing against second-place Arsenal. If he struggled to impact the game against Liverpool, it might well be a similar story against the Gunners.

There are options at Moyes’ disposal, too. Tim Iroegbunam, who replaced Garner at Anfield, could come into the starting lineup. Alternatively, the returning Iliman Ndiaye could start, with Doucoure playing a deeper role.

It will be interesting to see if Garner keeps his place in the Everton team for Saturday afternoon’s clash with Mikel Arteta’s side. If he does, the midfielder will certainly need to impact the game more in the middle of the park.

Crystal Palace battling to sign "amazing" 26-goal ace who may replace Eze

As interest continues to arrive over Eberechi Eze’s signature, Crystal Palace have reportedly turned their attention towards a talented attacking midfielder who could replace their star man.

Man Utd interested in Eze

Among the clubs interested in Eze are Manchester United. The Red Devils are desperate for reinforcements this summer, and as Ruben Amorim searches for the perfect attacking midfielder to slot straight into his 3-4-2-1 system, Eze could be an ideal choice.

The Crystal Palace star has once again been vital for Oliver Glasner’s side, who find themselves in an FA Cup semi-final and pushing for a top-half finish.

Glasner is certainly well aware of Eze’s importance too, albeit in a “strange season”, having told reporters after Crystal Palace thrashed Fulham 3-0 in their FA Cup quarter-final tie: “I think Ebere has had a strange season, he hasn’t had many goals in the Premier League and he has been unlucky, but he keeps going, he’s also struggled with strange injuries.

“The goal against Latvia and his first for England means a lot for him. He always has the confidence, we know he’s an amazing finisher to cut inside on his right foot with an amazing finish. We need this quality, he helped us today massively.”

It’s the type of quality that has attracted those at Old Trafford, who will reportedly have to splash out as much as £60m if they are to lure the England international away from Selhurst Park this summer.

Ebere Eze against Manchester United

Palace, of course, have eventually managed to cope without Michael Olise following his departure to Bayern Munich last summer. Now, they’ve reportedly set their sights on a player who could replace Eze in the event of his exit this time around.

Crystal Palace racing to sign Sem Steijn

Already preparing for the worst, the Eagles have reportedly set their sights on replacing their star man. According to The Boot Room, Crystal Palace are now battling to sign Sem Steijn from FC Twente this summer, having already sent their scouts to watch the talented attacking midfielder in action in recent months.

The 23-year-old has got better and better in recent seasons, culminating in an incredibly impressive campaign and his best yet in the Netherlands. Scoring 26 goals and assisting a further six goals in all competitions prior to this weekend, it should come as no surprise to see the likes of Jacek Kulig sending praise the Dutchman’s way.

The football talent scout rightfully described Steijn’s season as “amazing” following a campaign which has attracted the interest of Palace, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, among others.

If Eze does depart this summer, the impressive Dutchman should sit top of Crystal Palace’s list of potential replacements.

Arsenal prepare "bold" offer for Real Madrid player after Arteta green-light

Arsenal are ready to make a “bold” attempt to sign a “dominant” Real Madrid player following approval from Mikel Arteta, which interestingly comes amid the Gunners’ exceptional 3-0 win over Carlo Ancelotti’s men in the Champions League.

The England international scored two sensational free-kicks from long-range, curling it beyond the Los Blancos wall on both occasions and past a helpless Thibaut Courtois, who could feel hard done by considering the former Chelsea goalkeeper made save after save in what was a commendable display from him.

Arsenal could’ve won by even more if it wasn’t for the Real shot-stopper’s heroics, but Courtois couldn’t do anything about Rice’s exceptional strikes into the top corner, or Mikel Merino’s finish to round off a superb 3-0 win for the home side.

“I was very convinced because I could sense in the preparation that we were really at it, that we had that belief and that trust that we could create Madrid a lot of problems,” said Arteta after Arsenal’s historic Champions League victory over Real.

“But then it was the theme of the game, make it happen, then you have to make it happen. But you have that mindset and that belief that things can happen and we delivered today. It was a hard time, but we are very happy.

“My feeling was that the team was super convinced, and we had the trust that we could do it because we’ve done it for big periods against the best opposition that you can face in football for two years. And if you can do that, you can do it on the day, and especially with our crowds. At that level, I think it elevates the level of the team, and we have managed to beat them.”

Off the field, it is believed new sporting director Andrea Berta could rival Real for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, and a new report has now claimed that Arteta’s side may even look to raid the Bernabeu this summer.

Arsenal preparing offer for Real Madrid forward Arda Güler

According to a Spanish media source, Berta and co apparently have their eyes on Turkey international starlet Arda Güler.

The attacking midfielder, who can also slot in on the right wing, has been used sparingly by Ancelotti this season. Guler’s chipped in with three goals and seven assists over 33 appearances in all competitions, but he’s predominantly utilised as an impact player off the bench.

Now, it is believed that Arsenal are preparing a “bold” move to sign Guler, and plan to offer around £26 million to tempt Real into selling him. Arteta personally “doesn’t want to pass up” any opportunity to sign the 20-year-old, as Arsenal’s manager believes that Guler is an ideal fit.

Arteta also thinks that Guler could play a similar role to club captain Martin Odegaard, so this could be an intriguing story to keep tabs on amid the Turk’s struggle for game time in La Liga.

“His IQ is at a high level,” said Montenegro manager Robert Prosinecki.

“He is a very dominant player with the ball. He always thinks about attacking.”

Man City could now make £51m summer bid for "insane" goalscoring midfielder

Manchester City could make a £51m bid for an “insane” midfielder this summer, with Pep Guardiola personally identifying him as a target, according to a report.

City stepping up midfielder pursuit

Given the drop-off in performance levels this season, Guardiola was already due to oversee a major rebuild this summer, and the need to bring in a new midfielder has now been exacerbated by the fact Kevin De Bruyne has announced his decision to leave at the end of the campaign.

Following the news, Man City have stepped up their pursuit of a replacement for the 33-year-old, with Lyon’s Rayan Cherki recently emerging as a potential target, alongside FC Barcelona’s Dani Olmo, who Guardiola is believed to be a big fan of.

Not only does Guardiola need to bring in an attacking midfielder, but the manager may also be tasked with bringing in a new option in a slightly deeper role, given that Ilkay Gundogan is arguably in the twilight years of his career at 34-years-old.

Man City will need to find a replacement for their outgoing legend

ByJoe Nuttall Apr 8, 2025

According to a report from Calcio Mercato, the Manchester City boss has now set his sights on AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders, as he sets out to revamp his midfield this summer.

The Sky Blues could make a huge offer of around €50m – €60m (£43m – £51m) for Reijnders, despite the fact he has recently renewed his contract with the Italian side until the summer of 2030.

Real Madrid have also expressed an interest in the midfielder, having been impressed by his performances this season, but Guardiola’s side remain the most interested party, although they are yet to make a formal approach.

"Insane" Reijnders could be fantastic signing for City

The Dutchman has been one of AC Milan’s most consistent performers in the Serie A this season, averaging a 7.04 WhoScoered match rating, the second-highest figure in the squad, having particularly impressed from an attacking point of view.

The Milan star has nine goals and four assists to his name in 30 Serie A outings, and he places in the top 3% for non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, while also ranking highly across some other key metrics, when compared to other midfielders in the major 5 leagues.

Football scout Ben Mattinson is also particularly fond of the Netherlands international, having lauded him for his “insane” performances earlier in the campaign, and at 26-years-old, the central midfielder could be entering his prime years.

Gundogan has been a fantastic servant to City, while Mateo Kovacic was an important player during last season’s Premier League title triumph, but Guardiola clearly feels he needs to refresh his options in midfield, and Reijnders could be a fantastic signing.

£60m Tottenham player could leave along with Cristian Romero in "big news"

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is being repeatedly linked with an exit this summer, but he could be joined by an “underrated” Spurs teammate.

Cristian Romero attracting Atlético Madrid interest

The Lilywhites face a very real prospect of losing Romero once the transfer window reopens, as reports are suggesting that the Argentine wants to move on for a fresh challenge amid interest from Atlético Madrid.

As per some media sources, Romero is “pushing” to leave Tottenham, with chairman Daniel Levy postponing talks over a new contract for the 26-year-old as a result (The Boot Room). Meanwhile, others claim that Atlético boss Diego Simeone has reached out to the £165,000-per-week defender in an attempt to entice him with a move to La Liga (Uriel Lugt).

Sky Sports have also backed these reports that interest in Romero from Atlético is there, so the prospect of him departing N17 is seemingly looking more and more possible by the day.

Tottenham are out of both domestic cups and sitting 14th in the Premier League table after 15 top-flight defeats, with a good run in the Europa League coming as their only chance to win silverware and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Atlético undoubtedly provides the pull of regular European football and the chance to compete for major honours, and the same can certainly be said of their cross-city rivals, with Real Madrid also considering a summer move for Romero.

The former Atalanta star’s exit would be a blow for manager Ange Postecoglou, if he is even in the job by next season, but Romero isn’t the only Spurs player attracting real interest heading into an important summer window.

Tottenham open to selling Richarlison as three clubs plan bid

Injury-ridden striker Richarlison is among the players who could quit Tottenham with Romero, according to journalist Jorge Nicola.

As per the reporter, speaking on his YouTube channel, rumours are surrounding Brazilian Serie A trio Palmeiras, Fluminense and Flamengo are all plotting a bid for Richarlison, who cost Levy £60 million to sign from Everton in 2022.

Richarlison injured for Tottenham

However, the cost of an operation could prohibit these sides from moving, even if Nicola states that Tottenham are considering the permanent sale of Richarlison from July.

“In the last few hours, speculation has been that Palmeiras, Fluminense and Flamengo are preparing a proposal to buy the player in the middle of the year,” said Nicola.

“The big news on this subject is that Tottenham, very bothered by the center forward’s series of injuries, is considering negotiating him permanently starting in July.

“I can rule out Palmeiras being interested in Richarlison. When Verdão spends 155 million reais to buy Vitor Roque, they stop looking for the player,” he added.

“Even if Tottenham admits a loss and loses, for example €18m, Richardson would still cost €40m. This number is completely out of line with the reality of any football club in Brazil, not to mention Pombo’s salary. Richarlison earns around R$3,900,000 at Tottenham, much higher than the salary of any active player in the country.”

The 27-year-old, called “underrated” by pundit Micah Richards, enjoyed a terrific purple patch of goalscoring form under Postecoglou midway through last season. However, fitness issues have caused him to miss the vast majority of 2024/2025.

After a frustrating campaign, don’t be surprised to see Richarlison follow Romero out the door.

Not just Mainoo: Man Utd's "generational" talent now must start every game

What did we witness last night at Old Trafford? Manchester United reached the Europa League quarter-final in the most incredible circumstances, beating French side Olympique Lyon 5-4 on the night, and 7-6 on aggregate, in what will go down as an all-time classic at Old Trafford.

It’s hard to know where to begin describing the action, but United were 2-0 up at half-time, thanks to goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot. However, they let that lead slip in the second half, with Lyon clawing it back to 2-2 on the night, taking the game to extra time.

The French side, who were down to 10 men after Corentin Tolisso was sent off for a second bookable offence, went 4-2 up on the night in extra time. The impressive Rayan Cherki scored their third, and Alexandre Lacazette the fourth, from the penalty spot.

However, this is Man United; they are never down and out. With 114 minutes on the clock, Bruno Fernandes pulled one back for the Red Devils, also with a penalty, before Kobbie Mainoo equalised in the 120th minute of the game. Enter Harry Maguire, who gave United a 5-4 lead in the 121st minute. His fantastic header met Casemiro’s cross and rifled into the back of the net, winning the game for the Red Devils.

It was an extraordinary night, with Mainoo making a huge impact off the bench.

Mainoo’s stats vs. Lyon

United fans will always get behind their academy graduates, so for Mainoo to score the equaliser in an instant classic, it must have been special for the United midfielder, who actually played at centre-forward, and the fans. What a goal it was, too.

Getting on the end of a smart touch by Casemiro, the England international showed exceptional composure to bring the ball down with the outside of his right foot.

He then created space and took a couple more touches, shifting the ball into a favourable position to shoot, before he let fly. Mainoo’s strike nestled in the far right corner, a sublime goal in extraordinary circumstances.

Tyler Fell, a journalist for GiveMeSport, was incredibly complimentary of Mainoo, giving him a 7.5/10 for his efforts against Lyon. The journalist praised the United number 37 for his ‘phenomenal’ effort.

After a performance like that, the 19-year-old surely has to become a more prominent starter under Ruben Amorim, especially now that he’s over his recent injury issue. The same can certainly be said for another of United’s top performers in the historic clash with Lyon.

The player who should be a key starter under Amorim

You might struggle to find a performance with as much character this season as the one Leny Yoro put in against Lyon. After scoring a crucial first goal in the first leg last week, he was sensational at Old Trafford on Thursday, putting his body on the line and showing excellent ability with the ball at his feet.

Fell clearly thought that Yoro was excellent against the French side. Just as he did for Mainoo, the GiveMeSport writer gave him a 7.5/10, exclaiming that he ‘defended heroically’ and ‘used his pace to bail his side out’ if Lyon found a way past United’s defensive line.

Indeed, the 19-year-old’s stats from the game show just how well he played. As per Sofascore, Yoro had 66 touches of the ball, made nine clearances and won four out of his five attempted tackles.

Described as a “generational” player by writer Liam Canning, it felt like a statement performance from the United number 15 against Lyon. In high-pressure moments, he was there, throwing his body on the line to stop the opponents from finding a way through.

It was a colossal showing from the teen sensation, who showed once again why he should, and has, become such a key player under Amorim. United have made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they face a tough tie against Athletic Club.

It certainly feels like Yoro will be a pivotal part of this Red Devils side if they are to go all the way and lift the trophy in Bilbao at the end of the season.

10 duels won, 6 tackles: Arteta has just unlocked Arsenal's new Xhaka

On Wednesday evening, it was the bright lights of the colossal arena that is the Bernabeu for Arsenal. On Sunday afternoon, it was a more intimate stage. This time it was Portman Road.

The scene was less glamorous, less dramatic, but it was another impressive win for Mikel Arteta’s side nonetheless.

Although Liverpool are the runaway leaders in the Premier League, the Gunners do still have something to play for.

Lose on Sunday, and the Reds would have wrapped up the title. Lose on Sunday, and the chasing pack in the race for the Champions League would have caught up.

Well, they did not suffer defeat. Instead, Arsenal were in a rampant mood, seeing off Ipswich 4-0 to cement their place as the division’s second-best team.

Arsenal's biggest statement makers on Sunday

Arteta’s men may well be in the semi-finals of the Champions League and second in the league but it’s safe to say this hasn’t been the rosiest of seasons for those at the Emirates Stadium.

Ever since Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury in December, their league form has deteriorated and hasn’t been consistent whatsoever.

Well, Saka is back and he’s already making inroads into the most difficult campaign of his senior career.

A goal in Madrid on Wednesday was followed up by another dazzling display in Suffolk this weekend, registering the pre-assist for the opening two goals, scored by Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli.

Saka was also on the end of a horrible tackle from Ipswich left-back Leif Davis, one that saw him receive a red card.

While Arsenal’s no.7 was able to carry on, he was substituted in the second half and was seen on the bench with strapping and ice wrapped around his ankle. Let’s hope that’s not a nasty injury.

Saka was certainly at his best, as too were the aforementioned Trossard and Martinelli.

The former was the scorer of two well-taken goals while the latter made it two in two, darting onto the end of Mikel Merino’s clever flick to find the net.

There was even time for a late Ethan Nwaneri deflected goal, putting the icing on top of the cake.

In truth, it was a perfect all-round display from the team but one key performer in red and white rather went under the radar.

Arsenal may have finally replaced Granit Xhaka

Back in 2023, Arsenal decided to cash in on their enigmatic midfielder Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss came off the back of a career-best haul of nine goals and seven assists in all competitions so losing him was a bitter blow.

Unsurprisingly, his departure turned out to be key, even if Edu and Co did decide to sign Declan Rice that summer.

Xhaka was a vital component of the team that came so close to winning the league and his departure harmed the left-hand side of Arsenal’s attack.

No longer was Martinelli – a man who registered his own career best figures of 15 goals – being fed by his partner in crime. It left him to look rather average out on that left wing.

Granit Xhaka

Well, in 2025, it looks as though Arteta has finally found the club’s new Xhaka in Merino.

The Spaniard had a pretty mediocre and troubled start to his career in the capital. Within days of his arrival, he sustained a shoulder injury, ruining his integration period at Colney.

While he did find the net in games against Liverpool and Brentford, we were not seeing the best of the former Real Sociedad man.

It’s remarkable, therefore, that it took a change in position for Merino to be unlocked fully. The game was that one against Leicester. Kai Havertz was out for the season and Arsenal needed a hero. On came Arsenal’s summer signing, having never played as a centre forward, to score twice.

Since then, he’s been exceptional in that striker berth, notably scoring against Chelsea and finding the net in that incredible 3-0 win over Real Madrid at the Emirates a few weeks ago.

Not just content with scoring goals, Merino has been a creative force too, demonstrating the type of traits Arteta has been crying out for since Xhaka left London behind.

While much of the Spain international’s good work has come as a striker, he’s also making an impact in midfield now, registering a cracking assist for Martinelli’s goal at Portman Road and supplying both of Arsenal’s goals in Spain a few days ago.

It’s that ability to ghost into the box that made Xhaka such a hit in his final campaign at Arsenal and is consequently the same attribute now making Merino a firm fan favourite.

In the words of Arsenal writer Charles Watts, the first half was a “45 minute clinic from Merino” who was “outstanding”.

Well, over the course of his 57 minutes on the field, he had 33 touches, won a whopping ten duels and completed six tackles, more than living up to a rather specific tag he was given upon arriving last summer.

Indeed, he was hailed as a “duel monster” by Gunners content creator Adam Keys, having been the only player in Europe’s top seven leagues to win over 300 duels last season.

So, it may have taken Merino several months to get up to speed after his £31.6m move but he’s now showing exactly why Arteta was so keen to sign him. At long, long last, it would appear Arsenal have someone capable of filling the Xhaka-shaped hole in the team.

Man Utd: INEOS now agree personal terms to sign "world-class" £64m striker

Manchester United have now agreed personal terms with a striker following talks with his entourage, but they must shell out €75m (£64m) to get a deal done, according to a report.

Man Utd's striker pursuit heating up

Following the late heroics against Lyon to progress to the Europa League semi-finals, Ruben Amorim would’ve been hoping to ride the momentum into the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, but his side came up short in a 1-0 defeat.

It was a drab affair at Old Trafford, with Rasmus Hojlund once again failing to find the back of the net in the Premier League, having scored just one goal in his last 18 games, which highlights the need for a replacement to be brought in this summer.

The Red Devils and INEOS are now stepping up their pursuit of a new striker, and they are believed to be on the verge of signing Wolves star Matheus Cunha, having held positive talks over a deal for the Brazilian.

Better than Cunha: Man Utd to step up move for 'one of PL's best players'

Man Utd appear to be closing in on a move for Matheus Cunha – but is he the best target?

Cunha is not the only option, however, with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap also on the list of targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to a report from Italy (via Sport Witness), there has now been a promising update in Manchester United’s pursuit of Victor Osimhen, as they are believed to have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms.

United have held talks with Osimhen’s entourage, and negotiations appear to be going well, with the striker seemingly keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer, and Amorim’s side are now becoming more determined to get a deal done.

A deal will not be cheap, however, as the Red Devils will have to fork out the forward’s €75m (£64m) release clause, which only applies to clubs outside of Italy.

"World-class" Osimhen could be huge upgrade on Hojlund

Lauded as “world-class” by members of the media, the Nigerian is enjoying a fantastic season on loan at Galatasaray, amassing an incredible 30 goals in 35 matches across all competitions, while also providing seven assists.

Albeit playing in a much weaker league, the 26-year-old is vastly outscoring Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, and he has proven himself in one of Europe’s top leagues in the past, scoring 26 Serie A goals en-route to Napoli’s title triumph in the 2022-23 season.

Osimhen could be a fantastic signing for Man United this summer, at which point signing a new striker should be one of their main priorities, given that Hojlund and Zirkzee cannot be relied upon as a regular source of goals.
