Shahbaz Nadeem’s four-for and a rapid 86 from Ishan Kishan helped Jharkhand cruise into the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy. Jharkhand’s previous appearance in the semi-final came in the 2004-05 plate league, and this is the first time they will play at this stage of the competition since the tournament was restructured.Haryana had ended the fourth day with an overall lead of 59 and eight wickets in hand with the top four making important contributions. Their innings, however, unraveled quickly against Jharkhand’s spinners, Nadeem and legspinner Samar Quadri, as Haryana went from 178 for 2 to 193 for 7 within 10 overs. Nadeem, who had taken seven wickets in the first innings, took his match haul to 11 wickets with 4 for 78 in the second innings and Quadri took 3 for 75. This was the second time Nadeem finished with more than 10 wickets in a match in this season.Haryana’s dismissal for 262 left Jharkhand with a target of 176. Kishan stepped up with a 61-ball 86 which included nine fours and six sixes. His partnerships with opener Anand Singh and Virat Singh both came at more than five runs an over and by the time he was dismissed in the 24th over, Jharkhand had raced to 139. They took only another seven overs to complete the chase.

Three wickets in the last half hour of the day from left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil took Mumbai close to a win against Hyderabad who were seven wickets down and 111 away from their target of 232. Even though Mohammed Siraj’s five-for kept Mumbai to 217 and Hyderabad got off to a decent start in the first 15 overs of the chase, Gohil’s second five-for in as many matches made Hyderabad slide in what could have been a memorable win in a quarter-final against the defending champions.Hyderabad opener Akshath Reddy fell early when he was caught behind off Abhishek Nayar for 1 in the fourth over. Tanmay Agarwal and No. 3 Balchander Anirudh could bat for just over 11 overs together when two quick wickets from Gohil dented the chase. Agarwal handed a return catch and captain S Badrinath fell for 1, leaving them at 45 for 3. Anirudh and Bavanaka Sandeep brought the innings back on track with a stand of 44, but Abhiesh Nayak bowled Sandeep for 25 to help Mumbai bounce back. Soon after Hyderabad crossed 100 with four wickets down, Gohil troubled the lower order with the wickets of K Sumanth (14), Mehdi Hassan (4) and Akash Bhandari (4) to slim Hyderabad’s chances of winning.Earlier, Mumbai resumed the day on 102 for 3 and extended their lead with the help of Aditya Tare’s 57 and Siddhesh Lad’s 46. That they could add only 115 for seven wickets was because of Siraj. Once Praful Waghela fell for 28, Siraj dismissed Tare, and Mumbai lost their last six wickets for 70 runs. Siraj finished with 5 for 52, his maiden five-for in first-class matches.

Overnight batsman Samit Gohel batted all day with a string of partners to take Gujarat to 514 for 8 against Odisha. Gohel, who started the day on 110, added another 151 runs on the fourth day to increase their lead to a massive 578 runs.Gohel, whose previous highest score in first-class cricket was 104, reached his double-century just before tea, after Manpreet Juneja fell for 24. Gohel added 78 runs for the fifth wicket with Parthiv Patel (40) and followed that up with small partnerships with Chirag Gandhi, Rush Kalaria and Mehul Patel to take Gujarat to 453 for 8, before an unbeaten 61-run partnership with No. 10 Hardik Patel saw him move past 250 and Gujarat past 500. Left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh, who removed Parthiv, Gandhi and Kalaria, finished the day on 5 for 139, his fourth five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.

Magnificent £120k-p/w Star Could Replace Fabinho At Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer and he could be the man to replace Fabinho in Jurgen Klopp's midfield.

Could Liverpool sign Bruno Guimaraes?

According to Goal, the Reds have already opened talks over a potential summer deal for the former Lyon man but could be forced to pay £87m to prise him away from St James' Park, with Barcelona also said to be keen.

Eddie Howe's side hold all the cards with Guimaraes as he is contracted at Newcastle until 2026 and the report suggests that a new contract could soon be on the table for the 25-year-old after his impressive performances helped the Toon qualify for Champions League football ahead of Liverpool this season.

The Brazilian midfielder currently earns £120k-per-week at St James' Park but the report from Goal suggests that Newcastle are willing to offer him a new deal to make him one of the best-paid players in the Premier League, so it could be difficult for Liverpool to prise him away.

The news comes at a time when Liverpool are also thought to be closing in on the signing of Mac Allister.

Would Guimaraes be a good signing for Liverpool?

Guimaraes has been a revelation since signing for Newcastle in January 2022, helping transform the club from relegation candidates into a Champions League outfit.

This campaign saw him make 32 appearances in the top flight for the Toon, notching four goals and five assists with a superb 7.21 average rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Howe was full of praise for the young midfielder after he scored a brace in a win against Leicester City last season.

He said: "I thought he was magnificent in every aspect, especially out of possession because we struggled to get control of the ball today for any large periods of the game, so our defensive shape had to be very good and in part due to our three midfielders in there, it was very good.

"He's an incredibly passionate individual – I love that about him. He cares deeply whether we win or whether we lose and again, I love that about him because you need players that wear their heart on their sleeve and are prepared to give you everything on the pitch."

fabinho-liverpool-premier-league

No player in Liverpool's squad would achieve as high a rating as Guimaraes, while it was also a significantly better campaign than Fabinho's, as the former Monaco man endured a worrying decline which notably saw him described as an "old man" by journalist Graeme Bailey

While Fabinho proved himself to be one of the best in the business during Liverpool's dominant period under Klopp a few years ago, his performances this season suggest that a long-term heir is necessary at Anfield.

If we compare his stats with that of Guimaraes, then there is only one winner, as the Newcastle star averaged more tackles (2.4 vs 1.8), key passes (1.3 vs 0.5) and dribbles (1.4 vs 0.2) per game than Fabinho in the Premier League this term.

This suggests that he can do the job defensively while also contributing creatively, and he could be a great player for Klopp to have at Anfield should Liverpool complete a deal for Guimaraes this summer.

New Chelsea Boss Set To Make Major Transfer Decision

Incoming Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is set to target a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, with both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy failing to impress, according to journalist Miguel Delaney.

What's going on with Chelsea's goalkeepers?

Mendy started the season as the number-one pick under Thomas Tuchel but was dropped for Kepa under Graham Potter.

The Spaniard initially started well, but hasn't covered himself in glory in Chelsea's recent dismal run, and was dropped in favour of Mendy as Frank Lampard's side drew to Nottingham Forest.

Mendy made a glaring error for Forest's first goal in his return to action, and this has seemingly convinced Pochettino that he needs a new option between the posts.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Delaney claimed that a new goalkeeper is one of Pochettino's priorities as he aims to rebuild the Chelsea squad.

(4:57) "I think the squad will be drastically reduced, but from what I'm told, to further hone in on what Pochettino wants for the first XI, they're looking at another goalkeeper, which might seem surprising to people given they spent £100m in the last few years on goalkeepers, but I suppose it's all about what you need right now," he stated.

"A centre forward which is also where [Romelu] Lukaku's future is interesting, and a number six to kind of pin the team together, so it's three positions they're looking at."

Who could Pochettino target?

One obvious option for Chelsea could be David Raya from Brentford. The Spaniard is in the final year of his contract, and looks set to depart for what could be a bargain fee as he currently has no intention of extending his deal.

One of Kepa or Mendy will likely leave, and a reliable number one option would be ideal for Pochettino. Andre Onana of Inter has also been linked, and given his experience in the Champions League, the 27-year-old could be a desirable option as a proven goalkeeper.

Chelsea spent close to £100m combined on Kepa and Mendy, which included a then-record fee on Kepa to recruit him from Athletic Bilbao, and they would be keen to avoid another costly error when targeting players in such a crucial position.

They did sign young goalkeeping prospect Gabriel Slonina last summer, but it will likely be some time before the teenager is considered a serious contender for a first-team role.

Bairstow's keeping role will be debated – Bayliss

The England coach Trevor Bayliss has admitted England’s wicketkeeping position remains a debating point for the selectors ahead of the Test series against Pakistan

George Dobell14-Jun-2016The England coach Trevor Bayliss has admitted England’s wicketkeeping position remains a debating point for the selectors ahead of the Test series against Pakistan.Bayliss was as impressed as anyone with Jonny Bairstow’s batting during the series against Sri Lanka – “nobody is hitting the ball better than Jonny,” he said – but confirmed that Jos Buttler would keep wicket for the limited-overs games and revealed that other names were being considered for the Test team.Bairstow claimed 19 dismissals against Sri Lanka – a record for an England keeper in a three-match series – but also missed four chances, including a straightforward effort off Chris Woakes at Lord’s. He also missed, by conservative judgements, six chances in the four-match series against South Africa. While his position in the team as a batsman is beyond question after he contributed two centuries and was named Man of the Series, his future as keeper is less clear.CricViz, the analytics company, gave Bairstow’s keeping a rating of -111 for the Sri Lanka series. For comparison, they rated Dinesh Chandimal -22 for the same games, gave Sarfraz Ahmed a rating of +20 for the Pakistan series and AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Dane Vilas ratings of -62, -21 and +41 respectively for the series against England in South Africa. Bairstow finished that series with a -28 rating.Bayliss on…

Tymal Mills
“I’ve only seen him at one practice in South Africa and the reaction of our batters at the time said enough: there was plenty of them lining up in the spinners’ net to have a bat to stay away from him. It will be exciting to see what he’s got.”
Resting players
“If there was a World Cup just round the corner I’d be playing our strongest team. But it’s just a one-off match. It is a chance to give them a little bit of a break and get about 12 days off. And it’s a chance to look at a few new, younger players.”
Broad’s limited-overs future
“The limited-overs team has been picked on merit but that does not mean that it’s the end of his career. There’s bowlers in the team that still haven’t cemented their spot. He’s there or thereabouts. He’s keen to play at home in the 2019 World Cup and we are aware of that. There is no reason why he couldn’t be playing in the Champions Trophy next year.”

Describing himself as an “old school” judge who would always prefer to pick the “best wicketkeeper” rather than a batsman who can do a job with the gloves, Bayliss mentioned Ben Foakes, the young Surrey wicketkeeper, as one man under consideration.”I am a little bit old school,” Bayliss said. “I think the best wicketkeeper should be the wicketkeeper.”Our wicketkeepers – and there are three of them if you include Sam Billings – are young and inexperienced, I suppose. They are probably batters who are wicketkeepers.”I’ve said to all three of them that I believe the wicketkeeper in the team should be the best we have. Basically just to make sure they continue to work hard. Jonny, Jos and Sam certainly have stepped it up with the practice.”Personally I believe it is a wicketkeeping position. Ben Foakes is one name that has been mentioned, along with two or three others. From the selectors’ point of view, it is something we are going to have to work through and think pretty carefully about.”Foakes is only 23 and enjoying his first season as first-choice wicketkeeper at Surrey. While he developed at Essex, he was obliged to leave for more opportunity as his progress was blocked by the brilliant James Foster. But Foakes was identified as a player of great potential long ago: he was selected for the Lions side for the 2012-13 tour of Australia before he had played a List A game and has been invited to train with the full England team several times since. He is a good enough batsman to have played for much of last year as a specialist and, while Bayliss has yet to see him play, Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, rates him as “the most talented keeper in the country” and Andy Flower has long recognised him as one for the future.Whether that future is now remains uncertain. In an ideal world, Foakes would be allowed to continue to develop in the county game before being exposed to the pressure of international cricket. But the England management are concerned about the prospect of a winter where England will play seven Tests in Asia, with the keeper expected to spend a large amount of time standing up to the stumps against the spinners. In the short term, Bayliss has reassured Buttler that he remains first-choice keeper in the limited-overs sides and suggested he could go some way to convincing the selectors to recall him to the Test team with a strong performance in the white-ball matches. Realistically, though, he will need to prove himself in the County Championship with Lancashire; he has not played a first-class game since he was dropped from the Test team in October and he is not scheduled to play one ahead of the Pakistan series.”Jos will be the wicketkeeper for the limited-overs games,” Bayliss said. “He has been in the last few white-ball series.”Runs could put him back in the frame for the Test side, but the selectors would like to see him score runs in the four-day game to show us he’s back in form. We know the devastating player he can be. It’s a bit unfortunate we don’t have any games for another couple of weeks, but he will get his opportunity I’m sure.”Bayliss also hinted that Scott Borthwick was in pole position to replace Nick Compton as England’s No. 3 against Pakistan. While he is another player Bayliss has yet to see play in the flesh, his record on Durham’s tricky surfaces is exceptional. He has passed 1,000 first-class runs in each of the most recent three seasons and also offers legspin bowling – he won a Test cap as a spinner in early 2014 – and strong fielding.”I haven’t actually seen him bat,” Bayliss said. “But the feedback I’ve got is that he is a player who is in form. He is a tough sort of a cricketer playing at Durham where sometimes the wickets have got a little bit more in them. He is very enthusiastic; a great guy to have in the team. But he’s not the only one. There’s a few others around that could get a game.”

Chelsea’s "impressive" ace was excellent vs Forest

Chelsea and Nottingham Forest shared the points in an entertaining draw at Stamford Bridge.

Raheem Sterling was back to his imperious best, netting his first Premier League goals since New Year's Day against the same opponents via a brilliant brace in a rare showing of attacking quality for the Blues.

The winger will deservedly receive the plaudits for his fabulous performance, but Trevoh Chalobah, who is currently deputising out of position for the sidelined Reece James – with the defender ruled out for the rest of the campaign due to injury – was also fantastic.

How did Trevoh Chalobah play against Nottingham Forest?

The 23-year-old has endured an extremely difficult campaign, only starting 15 Premier League games, whilst registering just the 22nd-best average rating in the West London outfit’s squad (6.51).

However, the centre-back excelled against the Reds and justified Frank Lampard’s decision to field him in the starting lineup in an unfamiliar area of the pitch.

The former Ipswich Town loanee was fantastic defensively as he registered four clearances, two tackles, wasn't dribbled past, as well as winning all his ground and aerial duels.

The youngster has always shown this promise and when he was loaned to Lorient for the 2020/21 season, he averaged the most interceptions per game (2.4) in the squad.

The defender was also magnificent in attacking areas, managing 125 touches, two key passes, one accurate cross, and three successful dribbles.

Trevoh-Chalobah

Interestingly, he ranks in the top 16% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers over the past 365 days for progressive carries, as well as the highest 19% for touches in the attacking penalty area, as per FBref. These statistics indicate that he is comfortable when in possession and has an underrated ability for popping up in dangerous attacking areas.

Due to Todd Boehly’s extraordinary lavish spending, the reportedly incoming Mauricio Pochettino is to inherit a hideously bloated squad, but the academy starlet, who has been at Chelsea since 2007, should be kept in the squad for his versatility and reliability.

Furthermore, fellow centre-backs Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly are both over 30 years old, and with two seasons of senior first-team football experience at Stamford Bridge under his belt, Chalobah could be a useful asset next season.

As someone who is accustomed to the surroundings in a period of extreme change, he is a fountain of stability that will be much appreciated next term.

Celtic Could Find Abada Heir in £790-p/w Teen

A major talking point at Celtic in recent times has been the uncertainty surrounding Liel Abada's future at Parkhead, with the Israel international seemingly in line for an exit from the club at the end of the season.

According to Football Insider, there has reportedly been a falling out between the 21-year-old and manager Ange Postecoglou amid significant Premier League interest in the winger, with a summer departure said to be a real possibility.

As per the same source, the Scottish champions are said to be ready to accept around £7m-£10m if they are to cash in on the youngster in the upcoming transfer window, with the former Maccabi Petah Tikva ace having been signed for around £3.5m back in 2021.

Losing the £15k-per-week man – who has been sidelined with injury in recent games – would no doubt be something of a blow, with Abada having scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions this season.

As such, any potential exit may require Postecoglou to find a replacement or successor to the 5 foot 6 ace ahead of next season, with the Greek-Aussie seemingly already having a dream candidate for the role in the form of 18-year-old, Ben Quinn.

Who is Ben Quinn?

While the teenager is yet to feature for the Old Firm outfit at first-team level, he is clearly a player who the club have high hopes for, having only just been handed a new contract extension at the club until 2025.

As the club's official website stated, that new deal was a just reward for the Irishman's 'breakout season' for the club's 'B' team, with Quinn having had a 'big role' under Stephen McManus and Darren O'Dea of late.

Much like Abada, the Republic of Ireland youth international appears to be at his brilliant best when operating on the right flank, notably being hailed as "very impressive" by journalist Sean Markus Clifford after scoring twice in the win over Bo'ness United back in November.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou

That deadly double from the exciting youngster came amid a campaign that has seen the youth starlet score 12 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions – an identical record to that of Abada in the first-team.

Of course, it would take a big step up for the £790-per-week sensation to go on to flourish in Postecoglou's side, although his standout form this season should certainly have the 57-year-old keeping a close eye on his progress.

The hope will be that Quinn – who only recently bagged a brace against bitter rivals Rangers in the Lowland League – can go on to prove something of an heir to Abada if the latter man is to move on any time soon, having proven himself a devastating threat from the flanks in the youth set-up.

Liverpool Plot Swoop For ‘Class’ £70m Premier League Midfielder

Liverpool have long been linked with a move for Ruben Neves and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of the player.

What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Ruben Neves?

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke (via Football Insider), Liverpool lead the race alongside Manchester United to sign the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder.

As per the report, it is claimed that the bitter Premier League rivals are ahead of Barcelona in their efforts to secure the signature of Neves this summer as the La Liga giants are still struggling to get on top of their financial issues.

Will Liverpool sign Ruben Neves?

There is no doubt that Liverpool are in desperate need of a midfield rebuild this summer which is not only prompted by the poor form the team has displayed this season, but also due to the number of outgoings in the centre of the pitch.

Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all set to leave this summer upon the expiry of their contracts and as it stands, all three midfielders will not be offered an extension to remain at Anfield beyond the current campaign.

Not only that, both club captain Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are well into the latter stages of their career, past the age of 30, so not only will the Liverpool hierarchy be looking to replace the departing personnel but should also be focusing on bringing in more youthful prospects for the future of the midfield.

As a result, the signing of the 26-year-old Wolves maestro – hailed "absolutely class" by reporter Alex Dicken – could be a worthwhile investment, one that would ultimately give the club a player who could become Thiago's replacement in the midfield three.

The Portuguese talent – who once had a reported price tag of £70m in January – ranks in the top 20% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for shots on goal, passes attempted, interceptions, blocks and clearances.

Premier League, Liverpool, Liverpool news, Liverpool transfers, Liverpool transfer news, Liverpool update, Liverpool latest news, LFC news, LFC transfers, LFC transfer news, Ruben Neves, Jurgen Klopp, Anfield, FSG

When comparing Neves' output to Thiago this season, the Wolves midfielder has actually outperformed the Liverpool sensation in many attributes including goals scored (5 v 0), progressive passes (175 v 107), shot-creating actions (58 v 39), tackles and interceptions combined (105 v 59) and ball recoveries (190 v 104).

Indeed, the highly-rated pair are similar in some ways, particularly with their passing range and the way they can dictate matches.

That said, they are extremely different in other facets of the game with Neves more of an explosive risk-taker than Thiago, but moving forward this could be hugely valuable to Klopp.

Indeed, he would have a player equally capable of providing defensive cover and an attacking threat, especially with Fabinho's rapid decline this season, having run 'out of gas' in the words of Sachin Nakrani.

If Liverpool could strike a good deal for Neves it could give them a midfielder who not only possesses a wealth of Premier League experience, but a more versatile presence in the centre of the pitch for the future. As such, he must be signed.

Aston Villa make transfer offer to experienced player

Aston Villa have reportedly made an offer to Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez.

The Lowdown: Martinez profiled

Martinez is 31 years of age and has been with Bilbao since 2018. The centre-back was previously a Real Sociedad player and has made over 350 La Liga appearances for the two clubs.

The 19-cap Spain international is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, though, with Villa Park thought to be a potential destination.

The Latest: Villa make offer

Sports Witness relayed an update from Spain regarding Martinez on Thursday, where Villa were named alongside two sides in his homeland.

They claimed that the player has ‘offers’ to join Villa and Atletico Madrid for free in the summer, with Barcelona also keen.

The Verdict: One to watch?

A new striker and defender appear to be Unai Emery’s priority in the summer window, so Martinez fits the bill in that regard.

He has plenty of experience at the top level for club and country and has actually outperformed all of Villa’s centre-backs this season, as per WhoScored, so could be a shrewd addition on a cut-price deal.

Emery currently has four options at centre-back, although Ashley Preece thinks Calum Chambers could depart, making Martinez a potential replacement for the former and a transfer to keep an eye on over the coming months.
