Haseeb Hameed hits ton as Indian bowlers get solid workout

For a better part of the last ten years, the Indians have preferred to play friendly tour games in the run-up to Test series overseas. The rigours of a first-class game that they have grown to appreciate in recent times are for days like Tuesday when they were given a proper workout by a potential opponent when the Test series starts.Haseeb Hameed, now 24, may be unrecognisable from the boyish avatar in 2016, when he broke through as a sprightly 19-year old in India . But all the traits that made him a classical Test opener in the making were on display in Chester-Le-Street on the second day of India’s tour fixture against the County Select XI. He made 112, his third century of the season and eighth overall, further justifying the selectors’ decision to pick him in England’s squad for the first two India Tests. For the record, the Indians took a 91-run lead, with the hosts finishing 220 for 9, with Avesh Khan ruled out of the remainder of the game due to a fractured left thumb.Related

Each of the Indian bowlers got a proper workout. After reducing the hosts to 56 for 4, shortly after lunch, Hameed was an epitome of composure and concentration. He focused on crease occupation for a better part of the first two sessions, before giving the Indians a glimpse of his free-flowing strokeplay in the final session. He was particularly aggressive against Axar Patel’s left-arm spin, hitting him for three successive boundaries to dash out of the sixties. Then, he carried on with the same tempo, lofting Ravindra Jadeja. In the nineties, he was kept honest as Jasprit Bumrah came steaming in for one last hurrah at the end of a long day, but Hameed didn’t show signs of nerves or desperation of getting to the impending landmark, eventually getting there calmly off 228 deliveries. The Indians were made to rue a missed opportunity after KL Rahul put down a chance behind the stumps off Patel. Hameed was on 60 when he was deceived in flight while looking to drive through the covers. He accounted for just over 50% of the runs the home team made and his 75-run partnership with Lyndon James was the highest of the day.Hameed’s footwork was crisp and unhurried. His judgment over which deliveries to play or leave, especially off Bumrah and Umesh Yadav in the morning session, immaculate. This was a statement without trying to make one – he wasn’t going to be bullied by an experienced attack. As the day wore on, he showed nimble footwork against spin. Before the Hameed show, the Indian pacers ran amok, raising prospects of enjoying a second hit at some stage during the day. While that wasn’t to be, they wouldn’t really complain at having a good workout against a batting line-up determined to prove themselves. Among them was one of India’s own, Washington Sundar, who missed making a mark in this game. Coming in at No. 4, Sundar lasted all of seven deliveries, prised out by a Mohammed Siraj lifter that he fended awkwardly to second slip.Jake Libby and Robert Yates were dismissed before Sundar, allowing Yadav and Bumrah to get onto the scoreboard. Libby’s indecisiveness cost him as he chopped on, while Yates poked at Bumrah’s away-going delivery to Rahul. As wickets fell around him, a resolute Hameed continue to grind his way through, taking 134 deliveries to raise his half-century.Bumrah and Yadav bowled five sharp overs each before and after lunch. While Bumrah bent his back and hit the deck hard, Yadav got the ball to move away, and to his credit, he made the batters play more than they left. Shardul Thakur, who had Hameed nicking behind, ended with 14-6-31-1. He pounded in over after over, mixing up full deliveries with skiddy short ones, causing the batters to weave and duck occasionally.Thakur had come close to picking up another wicket when James gloved a short delivery down the leg side, only for the ball to fly wide of a leaping Rahul down the leg side.Jadeja and Patel didn’t have much of a workload, mostly playing a holding role. Jadeja had a wicket to show for when he had debutant James Rew caught by Rohit Sharma at slip. Liam Patterson-White brought some late excitement to the proceedings when he took on India’s premier left-arm spinner, nonchalantly lofting him over the infield, then reverse-sweeping his way to some runs and having fun at the end of a hot day before being the last man out.As much as they would’ve been satisfied with how things panned out in the game, the Indians would’ve also been encouraged by the sight of their captain Virat Kohli, enjoying a hit at the nets a day after the BCCI said he was being rested from this game for a stiff back. At lunch, Kohli took throwdowns from Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour and specialist Nuwan Seneviratne from 18 yards. He also faced Sussex offspinner Jack Carson, with head coach Ravi Shastri observing the session from a distance. The development was a welcome one for the Indians, who will also concerned by the fitness of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has a swollen hamstring. Also part of the nets was India’s most experienced fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who was back in action after picking up a hand injury on the final day of the World Test Championship final.

Richard Gould, Surrey CEO, to take up post at Bristol City

Prominent advocate of county game leaves to return to roots in South West

George Dobell14-May-2021Richard Gould, the chief executive of Surrey, is to leave the game to take up a similar position at Bristol City football club.Gould, who was previously chief executive at Somerset, has spent 10 years at The Kia Oval. In that time the club has undergone an extensive redevelopment, consolidated its position as a financial powerhouse of the game and enjoyed years of record financial success. From a cricketing perspective, the club has also won the County Championship, almost doubled its membership and produced numerous England players. Surrey have also consistently set the standard in terms of ticket sales for both domestic and international games.”It has been an absolute honour to lead Surrey County Cricket Club for the past decade,” Gould said. “It will always be a part of my life and I would like to thank our staff, players and members for their hard work, wonderful support and good humour throughout.”As the world of sport continues to evolve, Surrey CCC and The Kia Oval represent something very special indeed and I very much look forward to watching the Club’s continued growth over years to come.”Richard Thompson, Surrey County Cricket Club Chair, added: “Richard has been an exceptional CEO of Surrey CCC over a ten-year period, always prepared to speak his mind, with great clarity, honesty and always integrity. Richard should be proud of his legacy and know that he will always be a valued friend to the club that he has contributed so much to in so many ways.”Perhaps Gould’s true legacy will be as a champion of the county game. Unafraid of questioning the policies of the ECB executive, he has been a vocal critic of the Hundred and was a key figure in the founding of the Professional Game Group (PGG) which has given the county game more power and independence. As a result, he has sometimes clashed with the hierarchy at the ECB.Indeed, his departure robs the county game of one of its most prominent defenders. While there are other administrators with similar views, none of them have the heft earned by Gould for his success at both a Test-hosting and a non-Test hosting county. Without the PGG, for example, it is highly likely there would have been no Bob Willis Trophy in 2020.He is expected to leave Surrey in a month. Charlie Hodgson, who is currently Managing Director of The Kia Oval, will take over from Gould on an interim basis.Related

Gould’s family links with football are extensive. His dad, Bobby Gould, led Wimbledon to the FA Cup and managed Wales, while his brother, Jonathan, played for Celtic (among others) and has also enjoyed a successful career as a coach. Richard Gould’s first job after leaving the army – he was a Tank Commander in the 1st Royal Tank Regiment – was as commercial director of Bristol City. He was also schooled in the city and has two children at university there at present. He has continued to live in Somerset while working at Surrey.Whether this spells the end of Gould’s involvement in cricket remains to be seen. He is only 51 and, with the ECB CEO’s job expected to become available again in the relatively near future – Tom Harrison is likely to be among the front-runners for the vacant role of ICC chief executive – it is not impossible he could be in the running. He narrowly missed out on the position in 2014 when he made it to the final two, but Harrison was appointed instead. A position as a non-executive director on the ECB board might also be a possibility at some stage. His preparedness to call out the ECB for their errors has rocked boats, however. And while there are many lovers of the county game who owe him much, he has probably accumulated a couple of enemies along the way. Appointing him to the ECB role now, given his antipathy for the Hundred, in particular, might be perceived as a significant U-turn.

Southampton now targeting "great" £40,000-a-week in-demand midfielder

Hoping to add to the Premier League experience that they've already brought to Russell Martin's side this summer, Southampton are now reportedly eyeing a midfielder who's expected to leave his current club.

Southampton transfer news

The Saints have already, of course, added a Premier League veteran in the form of Adam Lallana, who returned to his boyhood club in quite the full circle moment. Since then, Flynn Downes, Ben Brereton Diaz and others have followed through the St Mary's door to hand Martin a major boost ahead of his maiden campaign in England's top flight.

Journalist: Southampton in talks to sign 19 y/o they are "in love with"

Contact has been been made over a summer switch.

1 ByHenry Jackson Aug 6, 2024

With their opening day clash against Newcastle United just nine days away now, the Saints are seemingly yet to conclude their summer business, having been linked to the likes of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from KAA Gent and Brighton & Hove Albion's Facundo Buonanotte in recent days.

A deal that may be more likely is one for a midfield reinforcement. According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Southampton are eyeing a move to sign Oliver Skipp, who is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The 23-year-old has been the subject of interest from all three newly-promoted clubs, giving those at St Mary's an early chance to get one over on their rivals.

Earning a reported £40,000-a-week, Skipp would instantly become one of the highest-earners at Southampton, below just Joe Aribo, Adam Armstrong, Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens, whilst sitting alongside Carlos Alcaraz. So, it's a deal that the Saints will have to be convinced about making, that's for sure.

Tottenham's Oliver Skipp

Skipp arguably represents the ideal signing, however. He still has plenty of potential to unlock at 23 years old, but already has more than enough Premier League experience to play an important role under Russell Martin.

"Great" Skipp can partner Downes

Hoping to find the formula for Premier League survival, Martin could welcome Skipp to work alongside Downes at the heart of his Southampton side, allowing the latter to pull the strings more going forward. The defensive work of the Spurs midfielder would provide a crucial platform for the likes of Lallana and Armstrong to thrive in the final third.

With just 707 minutes played in the Premier League last season, there's no doubt that Skipp needs a move away from Spurs this summer. He simply cannot afford another campaign watching on from the sidelines.

He will hope that a move away results in the realisation of the potential that Antonio Conte once spotted, telling the Evening Standard during his time in North London: "This player is a very young. He has really a lot of space for improvement. He played with great intensity, great passion, with heart, with soul. I think it was important because, for me, he doesn’t care if he’s only 21-years-old, who deserves to play,”

Dress rehearsal for T20 World Cup favourites as India, England look to clinch series

The groundwork for the marquee event in October will have been laid by both teams irrespective of the result

Andrew Miller19-Mar-20216:31

Will England field same XI? Kishan instead of Rahul for India?

Big PictureHere we go then, this is the contest that makes all the agonies and frustrations of recent months worthwhile. In the midst of a pandemic, we’ve got a treat in store. The world’s top-two ranked teams going head to head in a contest that, to judge by the ding-dong battle we’ve enjoyed so far this series, could yet be a full dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup final in just over six months’ time. The only pity is that there will be no crowd present to create the full bear-pit atmosphere that this contest deserves. There were 66,000 spectators present to watch India’s series-leveller in game two, before the gates were slammed shut once again due to Gujarat’s surge in Covid cases – and all the signs point to a similar arrangement when the ODIs begin in Pune next week. But in keeping with the impressive intensity that cricket at all levels has managed in this lock-down era, there will be no let-up on either side when the teams stride out to the middle on Saturday.Eoin Morgan was granted his full-strength squad for this series, to the chagrin of those who believe that England’s prospects in last month’s Test series were compromised as a consequence. But he has consistently stressed the need for his team to learn their lessons fast before the mad schedule of the English summer pulls his star players in every direction. And so, while he would no doubt have been delighted to wrap up the series with a better showing in match four, it’s not simply a case of putting on a brave face when he says he is relishing this chance to road-test his troops in their highest-stakes contest since 2019.Related

Morgan: Series decider is 'closest thing to a WC final'

After all, England have made it their business in recent years to embrace the expectation that comes with their front-running style of white-ball cricket. And while the circumstances are somewhat different, this contest carries with it the same sort of manufactured gravitas that England conferred on their fifth ODI against Australia at Old Trafford in 2018, when the chance was there to serve their greatest rivals a 5-0 series drubbing, and Jos Buttler dragged them over the line with a thrilling century in a one-wicket win. It’s not putting too fine a point on it to suggest that that chase, and the lessons learnt within it, were instrumental in England holding their nerve in the following years’ World Cup final. As for Virat Kohli, the lessons and pointers that he too has gleaned in the past four games have been invaluable. England have won three out of the four tosses in the series to date – a significant advantage given the onset of dew under the floodlights. But Kohli’s consistent message, that he was unconcerned about his team having to do it the hard way, bore fruit on Thursday evening, when they put enough runs on the board to squeeze England until they squeaked in their mounting run-chase.The manner in which India have won their two matches has been particularly instructive. On both occasions, it has been the devil-may-care exuberance of their rookies that has sparked the team into life, with Ishan Kishan’s debut fifty in game two giving way to Suryakumar Yadav’s scintillating 57 from 31 on Thursday. But neither has had a chance to come good in the same contest yet – and nor has Rishabh Pant, although with four scores between 21 and 30, and 102 runs from 79 balls all told, he doesn’t seem far away from cutting loose in his habitual fashion. The concern once again for India has been elsewhere in their batting order. KL Rahul’s struggles just will not go away, and while he does have an IPL looming in which he can re-find his range, the manner in which England have gone for the jugular in the powerplay, with Jofra Archer and Mark Wood dovetailing with such violent intent, will be hard to replicate outside of contests against Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada at Delhi Capitals in the IPL.Rohit Sharma, likewise, has not yet found his range, in spite of a first-ball six on Thursday – Archer has now bagged him three times in 15 balls in T20s, at a cost of ten runs. Shreyas Iyer has been an important source of mid-innings momentum, most notably in the two games when Kohli has been undone by Adil Rashid, but for a side that is actively targetting a fearless new approach to their batting, the feeling persists that they have at least one too many anchors in their current first-choice line-up.In the bowling stakes, the two teams have subtly different problems. India remain wedded to their five-man attack, which offers no wriggle-room on a day when one of them gets taken for a journey – as it nearly happened on Thursday to Washington Sundar. But equally, that pressure to perform on a ball-by-ball basis can create some seriously hardened competitors. Hardik Pandya was the under-sung hero in match four, as he skidded through his four overs for 16 runs, while Shardul Thakur held his nerve at the death, just as Archer was threatening to reprise his IPL range-hitting. Sometimes, when you are walking a tight-rope, that imperative not to look down can be emboldening.England have broader options, but rather less defined roles. Archer, Wood and Rashid are the clear backbones of their World Cup line-up, but with no second spinner – not even a part-time option such as Joe Root provided in 2016 – the less express seam of Sam Curran, Ben Stokes and Chris Jordan has proved a touch too hittable at key moments in this campaign. Curran’s indefinable status in the side epitomises England’s uncertainty. He bowled four overs for 22, including a wicket-maiden in the powerplay in game two, but just five for 45 as England’s sixth option in the rest of the series combined. These are, however, fairly good problems to have in the final approach to a major tournament. Win or lose in the series decider, both England and India will emerge from these five games with their plans a touch more clear, and their hunches explored in an environment that they couldn’t have ascertained against less potent opponents. The groundwork for October will have been laid by both teams, come what may.Form guide

In the spotlightThis could be Dawid Malan’s moment of reckoning. England’s No.1-ranked T20I batsman has endured a series of untimely fallowness in India – 80 runs from 77 balls all told, with four scores between 14 and 24, and no real sense that he was about to cut loose before he was cut short. It doesn’t feel like an over-extrapolation to suggest that Morgan hasn’t ever rated Malan quite as highly as his remarkable record might deserve, but this is the sort of dress rehearsal that can make or break perceptions. More than anything, the skipper values big-game players, so a matchwinning hand on Saturday’s stage may yet ink his name among the must-haves for October. That said, the manner of Malan’s demises in this series have been revealing – his attempts to force the pace against the spinners have come unstuck in each of his last three outings, and if that’s a sign that he’s liable to get bogged down in the middle overs in India where previously he has skipped through the gears, then his card may already be marked.Suryakumar Yadav slog-sweeps one fine•Getty Images

Suryakumar Yadav’s maiden international innings was an utter joy to behold. As carefree as his Mumbai Indians’ team-mate Kishan in match two – and all the more valuable to his team in that it came in the first innings of the match, and effectively landed a blow against the head in this toss-and-dew dominated series. The raucousness of his opening blow, a Roy Fredericks-esque pull for six over fine leg off a fired-up Archer, was so timely for his team, for it showed he would not be cowed by the express pace of England’s quicks, and signalled a charge towards, first, their best powerplay total of the series, and ultimately the top innings score too. He admitted afterwards that he had been encouraged by Kohli to keep things simple and play as he has been doing so consistently at the IPL. If he can follow that showing up with a similarly unfettered display on Saturday, it’ll take something special from England to match it.Team newsRahul’s struggles got no better on Thursday – in fact, his 14 from 17 balls was arguably a worse contribution than another short sharp duck would have been. But having been backed to battle through his form slump by Kohli, it would be intriguing to see him get the heave-ho now, even though Kishan’s potential recovery from a groin niggle sends a challenge to India’s brains trust. If there is to be a change, then T Natarajan, and his line in pinpoint yorkers, could get a chance to bolster India’s bowling now that he has emerged from his quarantine period. Sundar had his moment in the second game, but his offspin landed squarely in the hitting arc of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow on Thursday.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ishan Kishan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Shreyas Iyer, 6 Suryakumar Yadav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Washington Sundar/T Natarajan, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Rahul ChaharIt’s hard to see England changing their formula right now (thanks for coming, Moeen Ali) although their surfeit of left-handers in the middle order did encounter a bit of a pile-up when Thakur got his wide cutters going towards the back-end of the innings. Could there be a temptation to mix up the batting order a touch? Stokes snuck in ahead of Morgan in match four and reaped the benefits of a longer lead-in with his best innings of the series, 46 from 23, but as suggested by Dinesh Karthik on , his natural fit in these conditions could be as high as No.3. Certainly, if he did grind along to a run-a-ball 20 in the early stages of his stay, he’s proven beyond any doubt that he would have the gears to go big.England (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Eoin Morgan (capt), 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark Wood.Pitch and conditionsIt’s back to the scene of India’s victory in match two on Saturday, as the teams line up once again on the pitch where Kishan and Kohli made short work of England’s target of 166 for 3. According to Paul Collingwood, England’s assistant coach, there’s been water added to the surface since that game and the cracks have sealed back up, and he doesn’t expect it to prove as slow and low as was the case when batting first in that match. And there’s a precedent for recycling in this series already: the black-soiled surface for the last game, used in the opening match too, proved to be the best batting pitch of the series so far, with enough carry off the deck to reward shots in both innings. Although, as Kohli acknowledged afterwards, the dew factor was a bigger consideration than ever in the closing overs of the game.Stats and trivia One way or another, a lengthy unbeaten series record will come to an end tomorrow. England have won seven and drawn one of their last eight T20I series, dating back to their last tour of India in 2018. India, meanwhile, have won six and drawn one of their last seven T20I series, dating back to Australia’s victory in February 2019. Malan is still on course to break Babar Azam’s record for the fastest batsman to 1000 T20I runs – 26 innings. He needs another 65 in his next two knocks, having reached 935 from 23 to date. England have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for a slow over-rate in the fourth T20I, a penalty that took into account the lengthy delays for two third-umpire reviews for catches by Malan and Rashid on the fine leg / third-man boundary. Both Archer and Wood have gone at less than a run a ball in the powerplay in this series so far. Archer has claimed two wickets in 48 balls, at a cost of 45 runs; Wood has picked up three in 30, while conceding 18 runs.Quotes “I’m enjoying it a lot. Even when I’m playing in the IPL or domestic cricket, I bowl a lot of overs in the death or fourth, fifth or sixth over in the powerplay. So, I bowl a lot of overs where batsmen come hard at bowlers. Kind of getting used to it now.”
Shardul Thakur says he relishes the pressure of bowling the tough overs in a T20 contest“We go into the next game with a huge amount of pressure on our shoulders as a team, because whoever wins that game wins the series. That’s great for us as a team, especially with a T20 World Cup coming up because the more pressure situations we get put into as a team the more I think we’ll benefit from it.”

Joe Root breaks through 10,000 Test runs barrier

Less than ten years on from his debut, former England captain becomes member of select club

Taking Root
Picked as a spare batsman on the tour of India in late 2012, Root made his debut in the fourth Test at Nagpur as England prioritised his batting over Samit Patel’s all-round abilities. Root’s County Championship average of 38.95, largely as an opener, did not necessarily suggest he was a natural fit at No. 6 but he had impressed Andy Flower and Graham Thorpe with his ability against spin and dug in to score 93 runs for once out as England drew the Test and won the four-match series 2-1.Homecoming hundred
After an underwhelming return batting in the middle order in New Zealand, Root was significantly more productive in the return series in May 2013. After 111 runs in the Lord’s Test across two innings, he hit a maiden hundred in his first appearance at his home ground, Headingley, with close friend Jonny Bairstow at the non-striker’s end to congratulate him.Joe Root is congratulated on his Headingley ton by Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow•PA Photos

Ashes to Ashes
The selectors lost patience with Nick Compton ahead of the 2013 Ashes and had seen enough from Root to suggest he would be well-equipped to slot in as an opener in the first of back-to-back series. His altercation with David Warner in a Birmingham bar during the Champions Trophy had added needle to the build-up, and he made a sublime 180 in the win at Lord’s in a 3-0 series win. His first England tour Down Under was less successful: he started the series at No. 6, was promoted to No. 3 after Jonathan Trott headed home – where he made 87 at Adelaide but no other scores of note – and was eventually dropped for the Sydney Test.Kevin who?
As the dust settled on Kevin Pietersen’s axing after the 5-0 humbling, Root ended the first day of Peter Moores’ second stint as England coach unbeaten on 102, and had soon compiled his first Test double at Lord’s against Sri Lanka. In the series that followed against India, he starred with unbeaten hundreds at Trent Bridge and The Oval to finish as leading run-scorer and suggest that Pietersen’s absence from the middle order would not be felt too keenly.Joe Root became the fourth-youngest double-centurion for England•AFP

Urn returns
Root’s impressive form continued in the Caribbean, despite England’s winter being dominated by their group-stage exit at the World Cup: he hit a fluent, unbeaten 182 to set up a nine-wicket win in Grenada as the series against West Indies was drawn. With Paul Farbrace in temporary charge following Moores’ sacking and ahead of Trevor Bayliss’ arrival, there was a sense of giddy optimism during his 98 against New Zealand at Lord’s, which included a stand of 161 in 31.5 overs with Ben Stokes to lead a counter-attacking recovery from 30 for 4.He was particularly dominant in the Ashes which followed. He made a tone-setting 134 in Cardiff on the first day of the series – having been dropped second ball by Brad Haddin – and compiled 130 in the first innings at Trent Bridge after Australia had been bowled out for 60 in the first session of the Test. As England re-gained the urn, Root’s stock was at an all-time high, evidenced by a short stint at No. 1 in the ICC’s Test batting rankings.Cook’s heir
Root had been awarded the vice-captaincy ahead of the Ashes win, though with Alastair Cook still churning out runs it did not necessarily seem as though a change of leadership would be imminent. Now becoming a senior player, Root finished second to Cook in the run charts during the Pakistan series in the UAE, and passed 50 in all four Tests in South Africa as England won 2-1. After an uncharacteristically quiet start to the 2016 summer following an exceptional individual effort in the World T20, he plundered 254 in Manchester against Pakistan – his highest Test innings, and arguably his best.Joe Root punches the air after bringing up his double-century against Pakistan•Getty Images

Transition
While England were roundly hammered 4-0 in India in late 2016, Root enjoyed an excellent series personally, showcasing his superb record against spin as he finished second to Virat Kohli in the run-scoring charts thanks to 124 at Rajkot and a half-century in each of the defeats that followed. Cook decided two months later that it was time to pass on the mantle, and Root was the natural successor. He described his appointment as a “huge honour” and became England’s 80th Test captain.False dawn
Root did his best to dispel any concerns about the effect the captaincy would have on his batting in his first innings in the job, with a pace-setting 190 at Lord’s in a crushing win against South Africa. He led from the front throughout the summer, hitting 136 against West Indies in a day/night Test, and while England’s focus was firmly on their one-day revolution after their semi-final exit in the Champions Trophy, they went into the 2017-18 Ashes with cautious optimism that Australia were beatable.Form frustrations
As preparations for the 2019 World Cup geared up, Root’s Test side took a back seat and his own form tailed off somewhat, as he averaged below 40 for seven series in a row between the tour of New Zealand in early 2018 and the end of the 2019 Ashes. England remained strong at home, beating India and Ireland and drawing with Pakistan and Australia, but overseas results were a mixed bag with a whitewash in Sri Lanka offset by defeats in New Zealand and Pakistan. Despite a handful of impressive innings, particularly his 124 in Pallekele, Root’s batting average slid well below 50 as he alternated between No. 3 and 4, and he dropped out of the top 10 in the ICC’s batting rankings for the first time.Root’s average dipped below 40 for seven series in a row•Getty Images

Approaching his peak
After compiling his first double-century as captain in the 1-0 defeat in New Zealand in late 2019, Root’s series with the bat in South Africa summed up his form over the past three years as he made between 27 and 61 in each of his seven innings. But England were beginning to look like they were his team after Chris Silverwood had taken over from Bayliss as coach, and he marshalled a young side to a 3-1 series win. He missed the first Test of the 2020 home summer on paternity leave, but returned to lead series wins against Pakistan and West Indies, by which point he had won eight Tests in a row as captain.Glorious in Galle
Root turned 30 at the end of last year, and headed into 2021 with the prospect of 17 Tests to play including home and away series against India and the start of an away Ashes series. Everything pointed at a legacy-defining year. He started emphatically, playing two of his best innings as he put up scores of 228 and 186 in the back-to-back Galle Tests and dominating Sri Lanka’s spinners with his trademark sweep.Root enjoyed a record-breaking 2021•SLC

Records tumble
His 100th Test, against India in Chennai, could scarcely have gone better as Root scored a double-hundred in a crushing win. But despite the captain’s heroic run-scoring – there were three more for hundreds for the year, at home to India at Trent Bridge, Lord’s (an unbeaten 180 in defeat) and Headingley – England were only to win one of their next 17 Tests, as discontent grew.More Ashes anguish
Root’s stellar 2021 saw him record the third-highest Test run-aggregate for a calendar year, but he could only average 32.20 in Australia during another 4-0 defeat, as his wait for an away Ashes hundred went on. He became the first captain to lead England in two series losses down under in over a century, but despite many losing their jobs in the fallout – Chris Silverwood, Graeme Thorpe, Ashley Giles included – Root stayed on at the helm for the subsequent tour of the Caribbean. He scored hundreds at No. 3 in Antigua and Barbados, but England were beaten 1-0 and he gave up the captaincy a few weeks later.Root reacts after hitting the winning runs at Lord’s•Getty Images

With Stokes elevated to the captaincy, as part of a new management team that included director of cricket Rob Key and freshly appointed Test coach Brendon McCullum, Root was back in the ranks for the first home Test of the 2022 summer, against New Zealand at Lord’s. Although his cheap dismissal in the first innings triggered another dismal collapse, he produced one of his finest knocks second time around, finishing on 115 not out as England sealed a five-wicket chase of 277 – in the processing joining Cook as a member of the 10,000 Test runs club.*June 5, 2022 – This story was updated from an earlier version produced for Root’s 100th Test

It was important for Bayern to start strong in 2024-25 and lay down a marker to Bayer Leverkusen as they look to wrestle back their crown. The two meet on December 3 and Kompany would like to have as much of a buffer as possible to Xabi Alonso's side when they welcome them to the Allianz Arena.

Since returning from injury, Musiala has bagged seven goal contributions in six games, including the winner in each of Bayern's last two games. He is stepping up during difficult times for the German giants.

Arsenal struck gold on Arteta signing who’s now worth more than Gyokeres

Arsenal may have fallen just short of ending their Premier League title drought last season, but it was another year in which they took a step forward under Mikel Arteta.

When he took over in 2019, the Gunners were a listless midtable side, but they now look destined to win some major silverware in the coming years.

The Spaniard has cleared out most of the dead wood from the squad and brought in a plethora of talented stars, such as Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard, and with the transfer window open, he looks ready to add more.

One of the latest players touted for a move to the Emirates is Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, and while he'd be an exciting addition, the Gunners already have a talented forward who is worth even more than him in the squad.

Kai Havertz's Arsenal career

The man in question is none other than German forward Kai Havertz, who was a shock £65m purchase from cross-city rivals Chelsea last summer.

It would be fair to describe the transfer as somewhat unpopular at the time, with pundits such as Gabby Agbonlahor describing the former Bayer Leverkusen man as a "joke" just a month into the season – don't hold back, Gabby.

However, after a rough first half of the campaign in which he was mainly played as a left-eight, the 25-year-old was given a chance to start up top, and from that point on, he became one of the Gunners' best players.

In just 18 starts as a centre-forward, the "magnificent" ace, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, scored 18 goals and provided seven assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.20 games.

In contrast, when he started in midfield, he only scored six goals in 32 appearances, which equates to a much poorer average of one goal involvement every 5.33 games.

He wasn't just scoring consolation goals or the sixth in a 6-0 thumping, either. For example, he scored in the club's 3-2 North London Derby win, grabbed the late winner against Brentford and ensured the team ended the campaign with a win thanks to a late goal against Everton.

In all, while he might not be the most aesthetically pleasing player around and have a gaff or two in him, the "versatile" Havertz, as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, more than repaid Arteta's faith in him last season and while the club are linked to a new number nine, the German's value is higher.

Kai Havertz's valuation in 2024

Gyokeres is the name most heavily linked with a move to Arsenal at the moment, and the latest is that he might be joining for a fee of around £76m, and while that's a lot of money, it is less than the Gunners' current star forward is valued at.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Havertz is now worth €100m, which converts to around £85m, or about £9m more than the club look set to pay for the Swedish international.

A couple of key factors contribute to Havertz's high valuation. The first, and perhaps most significant, is his outstanding form.

In his final 14 league appearances last season, the Aachen-born marksman scored nine goals and provided six assists, averaging a goal involvement every 0.93 games, which is undeniably impressive under the pressure of a title race.

The second reason for his increased valuation is his contract. As things stand, the former Blues forward has four years remaining on his £180k-per-week deal, which puts the North Londoners in a great position to demand what they like for him should other sides come calling.

Ultimately, while he has his detractors, it would be hard to argue that Havertz didn't have a good campaign overall last season, and while Arsenal look ready to splash £76m on a new out-and-out striker this summer, they can rest assured that they already have a versatile attacker worth even more in the squad.

Man Utd now "open" to selling £120k-p/w player and signing two replacements

Manchester United are now ready to part ways with a member of their first team squad and replace him with two new faces, it has been reported.

Red Devils readying changes

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's influence at Manchester United has been slower than initially anticipated at Old Trafford since the INEOS chief took charge of proceedings at the beginning of the year.

Erik ten Hag, who many expected to leave the club following his eighth placed finish in the Premier League, is now staying and in talks to sign a new contract with the Red Devils, while the only departures so far this summer have been Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane, both of whom are out of contract this month, and Sofyan Amrabat, whose loan from Fiorentina expires at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, reports continue to suggest that almost everyone is up for sale as they target a refresh, though the club are on the verge of agreeing an extension to Jonny Evans one year deal at Old Trafford in a bizzare turn of events.

No bids have yet come in for players, which has slowed down potential changes to the squad, though a centre-back and a left-back are on the club's wishlist alongside a central midfielder and a backup striker to provide cover and competition for Dane Rasmus Hojlund. Now, their transfer window could finally spark into life with one player potentially on his way out.

United give green light to departure and plan replacements

That comes courtesy of Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, who claims that the Red Devils "would be open" to selling Victor Lindelof this summer amid interest from Fenerbahce. The Swede is down to the final 12 months of his £120,000 a week deal at Old Trafford and was a clear second choice option for Ten Hag on the rare occasion when everyone was fit.

He appeared 19 times in the Premier League last season, and was asked to cover at left-back as well as in central defence when fit, but has never really looked likely to nail down a starting berth following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez.

Now, he is wanted by former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, who took charge of the Turkish giants at the beginning of the month. No fee is mentioned in the potential deal, but the defender is valued at £13m by transfermarkt and such a fee would not be an unreasonable expectation.

And the club have a succession plan. Should Lindelof leave, Plettenberg reports United would look to sign two defenders instead of one this summer, having seen an opening bid for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected last week.

They are also keen on Leny Yoro, who is a target for Real Madrid and Liverpool, while Matthijs de Ligt "remains a transfer target" after falling down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena.

It is unlikely that two of those three would arrive at Old Trafford though, with Lindelof's secondary role likely to be filled by a lower-cost option should he ultimately leave for pastures new this summer.
